Thursday, November 30.
That's a wrap.
It comes around so聽fast. Another year of speakers, headphones, EarPods, and the sounds that stir you like none other. These are the artists who soundtrack the days of your weeks, the weeks of your months, and all four seasons. Some melodies and lyrics will come to move you in ways that nothing else can, and distill a very specific moment in time. Such is the potency of music; such is the potency of the little slideshow on your phone that runs through the music that defined your year. It even tells you聽exactly聽who you are, and about time, too.
Spotify Wrapped is, above all, a time for sharing. And so we share with you our Sound of 2023: the deep, distant, and mystical sounds of the Conch Shell. Yas queen!

music student tips
when you get a new piece, always listen to recordings of it. find your favourites. make a playlist. it will inspire you, and prevent you from accidentally misreading your sheet music.
if your instrument is not in good shape, your music will not be in good shape (hey, fellow strings players, when did you last change the strings?).
always have a pencil. always. have lots of them and people will love you.
annonate and highlight your sheet music. these things are not reserved for notes and textbooks, you know? mark down sections, highlight the key change you keep forgetting about. hell, you can even colour-code it! mark down everything you can.
the back of your sheet music is a good place to write miscellaneous instructions such as "memorise by monday".
keep a semblance of order in your sheet music.
think while you're practicing. music practice is an endless cycle of problem solving, and while mechanical repetition is an integral part of it, you need to re-evaluate constantly if you're repeating the right thing.
metronome! enough said.
if you keep on attacking the problem, it will eventually give. or, at least, significantly improve. there is no improvement in giving up on something because it was too difficult.
it will never be perfect, and that's okay.
no decently challenging piece can be learned in a day, no matter how long you spend on it that day鈥攊f it can, it's too easy for you, or you're on a professional level. you have to whittle it down day by day, little by little. when it comes to music practice, consistency beats intensity.
track you practice time. i use the forest app for it, and it has worked marvelously so far. if you can, keep a practice journal as well (i'm awfully inconsistent with that).
you are still allowed to have fun and play silly stuff, even if you're a "serious" musician. you can play both a wienavski concerto and the good omens theme, you know?
even if you are less than stellar at your instrument, just put in decent effort, show up to rehearsals, and be polite and honest with your co-musicians (that way, you are much more likely to be liked鈥攁nd invited to a post-concert bar crawl). you're still learning. most classmates are fine with bit of incompetence, but nobody likes a person who's full of shit.
being a music student is hard. take care of yourself, physically and mentally, and do not listen to assholes who do not understand how difficult your workload is.

How it started vs. How it ended.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I always start as an organised person but, by the end of any study session, my desk looks like a mess 馃槼
Anyway, today was so much better than yesterday. I still suffer from insomnia so I'm starting to get a headache but my mood was slightly better and I accomplished more things than yesterday so that is something 馃檭
This I did today:
I went to pilates and it felt amazing.
I keep reading.
I catch up with my korean homework.
I studied a couple of hours of clarinet.
My friend brought food and we watched Good Omens. It felt amazing to just laugh and have a nice time.

People will whine all day about tik tok making music shorter, but like 1) the primary driver is spotify, not tik tok because spotify pays per stream and counts a stream as 30 seconds of music regardless of how long the song is, incentivizing release several shorter songs.
and 2) music is kinda getting shorter, but it's a bit less of that and a bit more of "it had this period where it got a bit longer in the 1990s-early 2000s and then it's been trending back towards where it was".
Music has been shaped by how it's been sold for a very long time now. The entire general concept of songs being about 3 minutes comes from the limits of vinyl records and radio stations wanting time for ads. Radio edits have been around for longer than most people reading this have been alive. This isn't particularly unique or new, and also it really isn't tik tok's fault. And I am saying this as someone who hates tik tok.

Help me, Tumblerinas, you're my only hope
The collapsing bird app has failed me, and while I have no great reason to believe it will be better here, the Goncherov score, that absolutely fucking slaps, materializing out of Tumblr's userbase goddamn overnight gives me some amount of hope.
I animate as a hobby. Right now, I'm animating a "trailer" for my book that's already out, because I love my queer disaster goobers and stay motivated to draw them. After that, my dream is to animate something in the spirit of an anime opener for one of the later books in the series.
I need music for that. I have money! Not enough to commission someone, but enough to pay for rights to an indie musician who doesn't have a record company chowing down on most of the cashflow.
So, if you make music, with English lyrics, that has any kind of vibe similarity with an anime opener, please show it to me, so I can see if there's anything in your oeuvre that's got the theme and the tone I'm looking for.
A bit of my animation, for the curious:

Propaganda
Space vampire. Lesbian. Created the Mechanisms through some dark and twisted form of magic and science and granted them immortality.
Allow the man to speak in his own words,
"This report is maybe twelve years old. Parliament buried it, and it stayed buried till River dug it up. This is what they feared she knew. And they were right to fear, because there's a whole universe of folk who are gonna know it, too. They're gonna see it. Somebody has to speak for these people. You all got on this boat for different reasons, but you all come to the same place. So now I'm asking more of you than I have before. Maybe all. Sure as I know anything I know this, they will try again. Maybe on another world, maybe on this very ground swept clean. A year from now, ten, they'll swing back to the belief that they can make people鈥etter. And I do not hold to that. So no more running. I aim to misbehave."

Spotify playlists.
There is nothing quite as satisfying as being delighted by a song聽you聽love, playing on shuffle from a playlist that聽you聽yourself curated. Yet it is inexplicable that it comes as such a surprise, because it shouldn't be. It was you that selected this song and added it to said playlist. And yet, there is something doubly feel good in the first few bars hitting your eardrums, followed by the satisfaction that聽you聽chose it. It's like catching yourself off guard with a little present for you, from you. Gift-wrapped. This is not just a song you enjoy, endlessly, but more proof of your exceptional taste (as if it were needed.)聽Oh聽yeah, I love this song.聽Oh聽yeah, it was me. Perfect.
With that in mind, we are taking today to celebrate the creation and curation of聽#spotify playlists,聽or, indeed, your streaming service of choice. They serve any mood, any moment, any purpose. Feeling melancholy at midnight? In need of soothing sounds to accompany cooking? Big, bold, and colorful songs for a blue sky sunny day? Mellow music for a bath? A NSFW saucy soundtrack to after-hours, post-watershed shenanigans? Something exciting and upbeat for Saturday night, and something else indulgent and sad for Sunday?
Whether a personal collection for your own private listening, or a collaborative compilation shared amongst friends, the simple act of creating these patchworks of sound鈥攁 musical moodboard, if you will鈥攊s simply the gift that keeps on giving.聽
