Youtuber Life Chapter 2
Ships: familial sleepxiety and eventual Prinxiety
Words:???
first next
Summary: Remy Sanders is a famous beauty vlogger and just moved to LA with his teenage son Virgil after their location was leaked by fans. Remy AKA CoffeeAddiction has several million subscribers. Virgil also has a secret Drama channel, where he doesn’t show his face and uses a voice modifier. He just hit a million subs and grows more everyday because of the level of production his videos have, the mystery around who he is and the fact that he ALWAYS has the latest information regarding youtube drama.
They’d been in LA for three months now, and it was going well, Virgil was best friends with Patton, Logan and Roman. And he called Janus and Remus all the time.
Virgil had to help his dad with a video, it of course involved getting some very expensive and almost impossible to get pallet which he’d compare the stuff from a drug store. He had to get it.
Janus called him after he saw the video “hook me up bitch,” he said.
Virgil laughed “no,” he said monotone.
“Come on! You have the connections! You can get two!”
“I know, but I’m not for hire.”
“I am your best friend, hook me up.”
“Still no, get it yourself or don’t get it. I’ll mail you the leftovers if you want.”
“You better not destroy it you bitch!”
“I buy it, I don’t decide how it’s used, later loser,” Virgil hung up, with Janus screaming bloody murder.
“Hey Virgil, how did you get an A on the English essay? I’ve been trying all year to get a good grade and I’ve only ever gotten a B,” Roman said looking at his latest grades.
“Pick a point that sort of makes sense and defend it like your life depends on it,” Virgil said not looking up from his phone, Janus was spamming him about the pallet.
“And she just assigned a partner project! Partners?” Roman said in disbelief.
“Sure, I don’t want to be partners with a straight girl again, that was a disaster.”
Roman gave Virgil a questioning look.
“Wanted me to be her ‘gay best friend’”
“Want to go over to one of our houses to work on it after school?”
Virgil nodded “we can do my place, my dad won’t care.”
They of course stopped by Starbucks to get coffee. Remy called.
“Get me coffee.”
“I’m not even at Starbucks.”
“SnapMaps says otherwise, get me Starbies I’m doing a charity livestream,”
“No, I’m here with a friend.”
“Are you-? Oh my god! You are!”
“OH MY GOD NEVER IMPLY THAT AGAIN! I will get you coffee just never ask me that again!” Virgil hung up.
“Hi, I’ll get five venti iced coffees, black, and make two of them decaf.” Virgil said to the barista.
The newest video on CoffeeAddiction’s channel was about said decaf coffees and how he had been betrayed by his intern.
Dukey: Your dad is so dramatic Raccoon: I know, I’m grounded for “all of eternity” hiss hiss motherfucker: so no Office this weekend? Raccoon: I’ll be watching with you guys Raccoon: If he actually grounded me I wouldn't be able to get him the pallet Dukey: you’re dad’s really cool Raccoon: are you kidding me? I’M A FUCKING MEME Raccoon: LITERALLY, on multiple occasions people have made me a meme hiss hiss motherfucker: what are you doing for Halloween? Raccoon: Something really fucking scary, as scary as I can get without a detention anyway Dukey: My brother likes make up, I COULD tell him that YOU said that he probably couldn’t do good make up, and then his pride would take over and you’d have a challenge Raccoon: DO IT! That’ll be SO fun Dukey: already did
Roman looked up from his phone “my brother just said that you said I can’t do make up?”
“Yeah, Like sure you can make yourself have a pretty face but can you scare the shit out of people? Halloween’s in a few days.”
Roman rolled his eyes “Make up is an art! I doubt you know much emo nightmare, all you have on is that horrendous eyeshadow.”
Virgil smirked “Then it should be no worry of who will win.”
“A challenge then, to whomever can do the best make up.” Roman said with a flourish.
“I accept, after school? That gives more creative freedom.”
Roman agreed and they shook on it.
Dukey: O F F E N D E D P R I N C E Y N O I S E S hiss hiss motherfucker: what the fuck Remus Dukey: It’s true
Virgil went into the make up closest (yes they had an actual make up closet) to get his supplies. “Dad! I need to use your make up!” Virgil shouted.
“Don’t break anything!”
“Why the fuck would I do that?”
So Virgil got to work. It took several tries to get it just right but by the end it looked perfect. Prefect enough to scare the shit out of Roman that is.
They met up at the Halloween party, or Virgil did, he got their early and waited for Roman to arrive.
And he did.
Virgil saw him walk in so he jumped up and into Roman’s face.
Roman screamed and so did several other people.
“Sup Princey,” he said.
Roman put his hand on his heart “that was the most terrifying thing ever!”
“Then I won, clearly. I mean that...….. mummy costume isn’t that impressive or scary.”
Roman once again looked offended.
“Well, I’ll take my leave, see ya later Princey.” And Virgil left the party.
He walked inside the house in triumph.
“Where did you go Virgil? You’re all decked out in Halloween stuff. OH. MY GOD. You went to a party! You’re first party!!!” Remy said. He was filming, presumably for a vlog or something.
“I just went because I challenged a friend to see who could do better scare make up,” Virgil explained.
“Gurl, if you lost I’m disowning you. We are the queens of make up in this house and I will not see my son lose at a makeup competition,” Remy said.
“I scared him shitless of course I won.”
“THAT’S MY SON!” Remy cheered.
Virgil left to go change while Remy resumed his vlog.
He texted Remus and Janus.
Raccoon: I scared your brother shitless Raccoon: ngl it was pretty funny Dukey: I WISH I could have seen it hiss hiss motherfucker: Why do you like tormenting him? Dukey: well he’s MY twin, it’s my job Raccoon: His “o f f e n d e d p r i n c e y n o i s e s” are funny hiss hiss motherfucker: get a video and I’ll make my verdict Raccoon: Alright judge Janus hiss hiss motherfucker: YOU ARE NOT MAKING THAT MY CONTACT Dukey: You don’t like Jay-nus? Raccoon: Mine for him is hiss hiss motherfucker hiss hiss motherfucker: I fucking dare you, raccoon eyes Raccoon: now you’re definitely not getting that pallet
At school Roman practically begged to show Virgil how he looked so creepy.
“Oh my god! Fine princey, this weekend I’ll fucking show you how I did it,” Virgil said after two days of nonstop begging.
Roman looked triumphant ta getting what he wanted.
When Virgil texted his dad. Virgil: In the closet this weekend Remy: awww is it that boy at the Starbucks? Virgil: You mean the one I scared the shit out of and now wants to know who I did it? yes Remy: ok, tell me what time so we can go into the closet Virgil: I will
That Saturday Roman would come over. So on Friday that ad to “go into the closet” their code meaning they had to clean up all the stuff that where indicators of them being YouTubers and hide it in a literal closet. The makeup closet was locked and so was the basement so no one could stray down there.
Roman arrived a few minutes early.
“Dad! He’s here!”
“I know that Virgil, I’ll be “working” if y’all need me, but I know you won’t,” Remy said going into the basement and locking the door, he said he would edit but it was more likely he’d watch the Office for the sixteenth time.
Roman knocked on the door “hey emo nightmare! So this is your humble abode I see,” Roman said looking around.
“Yeah, my dad’s working in the basement, he said he’s doing something important, but he’s probably watching the Office again, either way he said not to disturb him,” Virgil said.
“I can hear you Virgil!” Remy shouted.
“Anyway, let’s go to my room so I can show you how I did the whole vampire look,” Virgil said.
When Roman saw his room he looked around “I pictured your room having a lot more black then this.”
Virgil’s room had only one wall where his bed was that was black, the rest was white, he had to admit it made the room look a lot more open then if it had been all black. Over the past two months Virgil had been painting purple patches on the black like in his old room in Atlanta.
“My dad refused to let me paint the whole room black because it would look terrible and I’d ruin the vibes,” Virgil said.
“He was right, but alas I’m not here to admire the décor of your room, I’m here to see how you did that makeup,” Roman said.
Virgil already had the stuff out “I know that Princey, come on, I’ll show you how to do it,” Virgil said.
They where halfway through when Roman said “you sound like a beauty channel,” he said.
Virgil stopped for a second before saying “well I’m doing it on your face, it would be a waste of good make up if you didn’t understand how I did it.”
“True, but you totally sound like James Charles,” Roman said.
Virgil winced “don’t let my dad hear you say that, he hates that guy.”
“Is he homophobic or something?”
Virgil smirked “no, we’re both gay. He just hates him and if you say his name around him, he might deck you. Or ban you from the espresso machine.”
Roman gave Virgil a weird look. “State of the art espresso machine, trust me, after you’ve had some you’ll regret ever getting banned.”
He laughed “so you’re both coffee addicts.”
“You should have seen his reaction when he realized that some of the coffee I got him was decaf.” Virgil smirked.
Roman laughed “like the Coffee Addiction video, I didn’t watch it but I saw it at number 1 on trending.”
Virgil almost lost his cool, for a minute “I guess, I wouldn’t know, I don’t watch CoffeeAddiction, what’s so great about it?”
Roman looked shocked “I’m surprised, I mean he’s one of the biggest youtubers in the beauty community,”
Virgil snorted “that explains it, I don’t watch beauty vlogs. Anyway, do you want to wash all of that off or go freak out some random people on the drive home?”
Roman chose to wash it off and left unknowing leaving Virgil and Remy to once again “youtubeify” their house.

Practice Challenge one: Part One
Beginnings:
“Fuck!” I yelled and slammed my hands against the steering wheel. This wasn’t the first time I’d had a total mental breakdown in the dim lighting of the courthouse parking lot, and it sure wasn’t gonna be the last. This case was rigged from the get-go, Mr. Dean esquire was always there against me, swaying the jury with his charismatic personality and his masculine gender. Not to mention it was a jury which he decided to leave fully as white men, his fellow groupies against my defendant, a woman of color who defended herself against her abuser who came at her with a gun.
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. Opening them I saw Dean sashaying to his car. I considered putting my own in reverse and waiting until he just walked by, then bye bye Dean. Deciding that it wouldn’t be worth the cost of defending myself I waited until after he’d passed to pull out and start to drive to Illean Private University. I was an attorney coach for a Mock Trial team and of course, had to encourage these kiddos that law was the best career and it would really be fulfilling to help people. Driving past the Greek life houses I couldn’t help but smile thinking of happier times. Chugging shitty beer, dressed like a total slut and not giving one single fuck.
After an hour or two of bullshitting some kids and reminding them to object when someone playing a witness says “well I heard the defendant say he was mad at the victim so he must have killed her.” I drove on my way home.
“Incoming call from Uncle Dipshit'' said my car, continuing the never ending day that is my life.
“What?”
“Hey little Savy-Hannah, I’m in a bit of a bind and need some help.”
“What was it? Cocaine? Meth? Or did you finally snap and get caught with heroin.”
“Come on, Savannah, why would you just assume that, can’t I call my one and only niece because I wanna talk to her?”
“At 11pm? Friday night? Bullshit.”
“.......fine Sav-”
“Fuck you, I’m not doing probono work for you anymore. Get your shit together or get the fuck out of our lives.”
Taking a turn away from my apartment I started to head for Lux, my old usual club. I hadn’t gone in awhile but right now I needed to get absolutely shitfaced. 8 shots and 2 waters later I was grinding up against some strangers to Kesha’s “Die Young”, a classic. Suddenly I heard an all too familiar voice, “Savannah!”
My brother. Specifically, my oldest brother, Dan. He danced his way over to me of course being in this scene and grabbed my wrist. “Wha-u wan dan?” I slurred and kept jumping to the song.
“I was worried about you, Ricky called and said you were acting weird.”
“Weird!" I laughed throwing my head back "Because I wouldn’t clean up his shit for once!” I screamed over the music before he pulled me out of the club by the wrist. As soon as the cool air hit my cheeks I leaned my head back and looked up at the sky.
“I wish I was a star." I mumbled seeing the shimmering lights above us before suddenly leaning forward and hurling all over the cement. Probably a usual occurrence for Lux but I still felt bad. Dan rolled down the windows of my car as he drove me home, I stuck my head out of it for the breeze to feel the air in my lungs.
“How’d you find me?” I mumbled, still not fully back to myself.
“We all have eachothers phone locations, remember? You insisted on it like a year ago after you interned on that kidnapping case.” He sighed as we drove up the familiar road home.
“You’re really a mess you know that?” He asked. It's not like he was much better….well, he was but it's not like I'm our brother Danny. At least I made something of myself. Didn't get handed my career and a wife on a silver platter. Or like Daniel who was still so far back into the closet that we really aren't sure if he'll ever come out, even though our family would be more than accepting of him.
I was tempted to defend myself but stopped, “I know, I just need a win."
The next morning Dan was sleeping on my couch and I was on the living room floor. “You couldn’t have carried me to bed?” I mumbled through a yawn.
“You’re the dumbass who got white girl wasted and said you were too tired to walk to your room.”
“What time is it?” I mumbled and went to find my phone despite the world swaying as I crawled to my purse.
He lifted his arm up to look at his watch, “Like 8:00am chill out.” He groaned.
“HOLY FUCK 8?” I flinched at the loudness of my own voice. I was normally up at six, two hours slept in, what’s today it’s a wednesday. ‘What was I supposed to do today? No clients in court today, so that’s good. Okay so I suppose I have to? Paperwork?’
I sighed, “You’re fucking lucky I didn’t have court today.” Stumbling up I ran to my room to change out of yesterday's clothes, splash some water on my face and get on the move.
"Lucky? I'm the one who got your ass home at all!" He yelled back from the living room as I slipped into a different skirt. Shirt could stay the same, just a plain white shell no one would notice. But skirt absolutely not. I grabbed a pair of earrings and a bag of makeup wipes and rushed past Dan.
"Fine sorry love ya. Family dinner on saturday right?" I hurried as I slung a purse over my shoulder.
"You got it." He replied.
"Uh, stay awhile have breakfast if you want. I've got bagels and eggs. Just lock up when you leave." I remembered finally to be polite as he stretched getting up from the sofa.
The office was busy and loud as usual. I tried to smile and act like I wasn't hungover as holy hell while I walked to my desk.
There was someone new taking a desk near me too. Lanky guy probably straight out of law school too. I sized him up for a moment before nearly catching his eye but going back to my work.
It wasn't till lunch that I had to actually deal with another human when I ran into Mr. Asshole-dean.
"Ms. Mars?" He said as he tapped my shoulder in line at the starbucks near the courthouse.
I turned but knew his voice right away, "Mr. Dean?" I replied wondering why he was bothering me. He seemed to catch my cold tone.
"What, rough night? Does suck the night you lose the case but don't worry. You'll get better at losing, can't win em all."
I would like to get an extra extra hot- you know what make it just a cup of fucking lava to poor on this jackass. I smiled, "Thanks! I'm sure it didn't take you long to get used to it." I gave a passive aggressive smile and looked down to my watch.
"Listen, Mars, I know we're opposing counsel but I don't mean any harm by it. I think we could be great friends if you'd give it a shot. I mean I'm sure we both hate our jo-"
"Hi I'd like a venti mocha!" I ordered cutting him off the scurried back to my car.
I had a few hours before I actually had a meeting. It was just to speak with a judge over a custody case between a homophobic mother and two "really good friends" one of who was the father of the child in question. There was a chance it could turn into a serious case, the mom was wealthy and if she got too displeased she could probably turn it into a civil suit on the grounds of the father being gay. But it wasn't likely she'd take the time. She was only really fighting for custody to use their kid as a weapon in the divorce.
I drove home with my coffee deciding I wanted to Pad Thai leftovers I had as comfort/hangover/please-god-dont-make-me-live-another-day food.
Daniel was sitting on my couch when I walked in. "Can you not just walk into my house? Dan may have forgotten to lock it but that's no reason for you to just waltz in here!" I yelled as I dropped my purse and walked up to him.
"Is that my mail?" I huffed and snatched my letters from him. It was just junk mail but he still had no right to be so intrusive.
He looked up at me with a slight glare, "I know what you did and I'm gonna get you back for it." And as quickly as he came he scurried out.
Ringing up Dan I tapped my foot on the ground, "You forgot to lock the door!" I yelled into the phone.
"Oh shit my bad. You okay?" He asked.
"Yes, but Daniel was just here. All pissed over something." I grumbled and walked to the fridge to get out my leftovers.
"Any idea of what?" He asked.
"No clue." I answered.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“No, don’t call anyone. Listen, they record everything but our conversations for confidentiality, if you call someone it’s possible that they might somehow be involved and we don’t want prosecution to get that- understand?” I hated explaining the basics to my clients, but those dumbassses would sign their own sentences if they didn’t know any better.
I walked up to the courthouse, in one hand I had my phone, the other a black coffee from the starbucks across the street, my work back slung over my shoulder and threatened to slide lower onto my arm. As I turned the corner I was suddenly burning with hot coffee against my chest and a stranger staring down at me as I had run right into him,
“FUCK!” I yelled as I stepped back. My heel slipped in a crack on the sidewalk, the top of it snapping it too causing me to fall back, my head hitting the hard concrete.
When I opened my eyes again he was standing over me. It was the new guy who sat across from me. "Don't worry I called an ambulance." He assured. I was going to sit up but as I pieced the situation together I realized I was no longer wearing a shirt. Instead I had his blazer placed over my top. I assume because of the burning coffee which would have been sitting on my torso had he not.
He rode in the ambulance to the hospital. We sat in awkward silence as I tried to figure out his angle. Was he afraid I'd sue. I was the one who bumped into him. Did he wanna ask me questions about our workplace. It'd been a month or so since he'd arrived though so that wouldn't make sense.
He sat next to me at the hospital and was still there when the doctor told me it was a light concussion and a small burn. He sighed, finally not seeming like a stiff board for a moment. Maybe he was scared I'd sue. I turned to him in the hospital bed when we had a moment alone.
"Why are you here?" I asked.
He blushed and looked down mumbling a bit as he said "I just wanted to make sure you were okay. I wouldn't be able to work anyways till I knew." My eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"Why? I'm the one that bumped into you?" I asked.
He was about to respond when the brigade of brothers came in. He seemed startled at all the sudden male energy in the room. "Ah, these are my brothers Dan, Danny, and Daniel. Daniel is a family name." I added the common addition when introducing them to anyone.
He stood up and shook Dan's hand firmly "Nicholas Lamia." He said. I realized then that I also didn't know his name. Danny started to get suspicious as he looked at him with antagonizing eyes.
"How do you know our sister?" He asked. Nicholas flushed again and tried to find words for a moment.
"We work together. He's the one who called the ambulance." Daniel set a balloon down next to me that he'd gotten at the gift shop.
We hadn't really spoken since his home break in. I still don't know what that was about. But he's been suspicious since. Once they released me Nicholas went on his way and the Mars siblings stood on the sidewalk and considered where to go.
"Should we get sushi? It's been a moment since we hung out without mom and dad." Dan suggested leading the conversation.
"Hmm, works for me. Samantha's out of town for work." Danny chimed in.
I sighed thinking about all the work I still had to do. But it had been a minute since we hung out for fun, and cucumber rolls wouldn't be too bad right about now. "Sure I'm in." I replied.
"You?" Danny asked Daniel.
He mumbled for a moment with the same guilty look, "no, I don't th-"
Suddenly Danny got him in a headlock, "come on even Savy agreed and she'd rather eat shit than waste time." He joked. I rolled my eyes and we all piled into Dan's car.
The waitress led us up to a small booth towards the back. At first I was going to sit next to Daniel but the blaring TV would send me down a spiral. There was a government program on and as soon as that shit for an heir came on I'd be fuming about how we're leaving the lives of multiple disadvantaged people to a boy who did body shots off a Delta Nu on a thursday night. I wasn’t exactly sure if that story was true, but it wouldn’t surprise me based off of what I’d seen from more credible sources than Lucy in the room down that hall at the sorority house who was gushing about how she wished it could be her. Prince Eaton went to the University of Labrador with us and she was hopeful that he would do it but sadly, no.
Dan saw my eyes lingering on the TV and switched sides of the booth with me. We were just about finished and considering desert when I began to notice the glances and smirks. I wiped with a napkin thinking maybe I had some rice on my face, but they continued nonetheless. It wasn’t like creepy guys smirking either, it was everyone. The air felt different and Daniel looked like he was going to be sick. “What?” I asked as he opened his mouth.
It looked like he was about to say something but couldn’t find the words. Dan opened to speak too, “Savannah, we didn’t think you’d ge-”
“Oh my gosh congratulations on being selected! Would you like a desert? Everything is on the house of course!” The waitress smiled.
I looked up at her as if she were speaking German. “Congratulations on what?” I asked.
“On being selected! They were just announced, are you so excited? Could I also get a photo by any chance! The next queen of Illea could be sitting at my booth!” She cheered.
The world slowed as my mind raced selected? Like The selection selected? I didn’t apply? I didn’t want to apply? How did I even get entered? What did Daniel want to tell me? Did Daniel do this? Was this his revenge for what?
I snapped out of it as Dan called my name. “I’m sorry. I have to step out for a moment.” I said and grabbed my purse running out of the restaurant, feeling everyone watching me. I walked to the side of the building and pressed my back against the cold brick panting. I crumbled inwards as my brothers ran over to me. I took a deep breath in,
“I don’t”
another breath
“understand.”
Suddenly a man with a long lens camera appeared. How did that happen so fast? How did he know what she looked like? Stupid your Savannah Mars it’s not like you’re a nobody your grandpa runs the largest candy company in the world.
“Can you back off?” I heard Dan ask him.
He kept ignoring Dan entirely, that is till Dan pushed his camera out of focus. “What the fuck man? Chill.” The creep said and went to shove Dan. Level headed Dan of course responded by punching him in the face.
We all piled into his car and drove to my house. I sat in the car ride silent and waited for someone to speak. No one did but Daniel still looked like he was going to throw up. We all sat on the sofa in continued silence. Only Dan spoke to offer everyone water.
No one said yes to it but a cup appeared in front of each of us anyways, always the responsible older brother.
I inhaled then finally said, “I’m not mad. I just want to know why?” and looked at Daniel. It was clear by now that he was the culprit.
He sat there in silence, his lip whimpering like he wanted to cry. Like he wanted to cry? If anyone’s going to cry it should be me. Suddenly I lunged at him to get in a hit. Only Danny’s arm stopped mine from smashing into his face.
“Why?” I yelled.
“I thought you made a gay dating profile for me.” He whimpered.
“What?” I asked, even more confused than before.
Dan spoke up, “Danny made a gay dating profile for him to try and give him a little push. When he got mad he said it was you who did it.”
“I just saw the letter sitting there and it seemed like the perfect way to get back at you for meddling in my love life. I was just gonna taunt you with submitting it, then Dan told me it was Danny but he said you wouldn’t get in and you’d just never know.” Daniel explained.
“Well, statistically speaking you shouldn’t have.” He defended. My anger shifted to the brother holding me back. If Danny had teased Daniel about his sexuality none of this would have happened. But I couldn’t do anything with him still holding my wrist.
I stood from the sofa and the brothers stood as well. “I’m going to go get changed.” The second they relaxed I turned and charged at Danny. “You fucking bitch!” I yelled and started to pull at his hair. He didn’t fight back but Daniel panicked and Dan rushed over. I was yanked off of him before I could make any real damage but he did look hurt enough.
“How could you! Just minding your own fucking business could have avoided this whole thing! And Daniel!” I yelled and turned. “Don’t fucking get vengeance especially not without communicating!”
The phone started to ring. It was probably about the selection. I huffed over ready to say, “Hi, yes this is Savannah Mars. No, I would not like to participate, please pull someone else.” But as I picked up the phone I realized something. Daniel would have had to forge my signature. In order to apply for me he had to sign a contract. If I say I want out I would have to prove I didn’t agree to begin with. That would mean proving the false signature. Which is by the way, illegal.
I sighed, held the phone to my ear. “Yes this is she. I’m so excited to be selected and am more than happy to discuss a time for you to send your people over.”
If Jude's parents still lived pt 3
Days had passed since that night. When I awoke, I was in my own bed, Taryn sprawled on the floor. I had deduced that we had come through my bedroom window on the second floor. Vivi answered my question by throwing it open herself and crawling through gracefully. She had given me a triumphant expression that I couldn't help but complement with a tired but relieved smile.
I didn't bother running that morning or any other after that. Dad noticed right away and asked if something was wrong. I merely replied that I was exhausted. But it wasn't true. None of it was. As I sat at my desk taking notes for history, my mind starts to wonder if I should join a gym or run around the track something falls out of my book. My eyes widen and I slowly reach to pick it up off the floor.
A black feather, the plumage so dark its iridescence shines between a purple and blue twirls between my fingers. I look up to see if anyone notices but they don't. I quickly place it beneath my notebook and turn the page to continue with lecture. There are scribbles there, too elegant to be my own, written anecdotes that don't make any sense. At least not to others like me. At end of the page there's a familiar one, Tayrn and I used to wonder aloud what it meant growing up and Vivi would tease us with a possible answer.
Why is a raven like a writing desk?
I remember Cardan tangling his arms through my own as we danced. The honeyed wine I was warned against drinking, the hungry eyes that gathered around and reveled in my humaness. How tired I became and the way we sat and talked for what seemed forever.
I glance at the page until class is over, I try to push the thought of it out of my head for the rest of day. After school, practice is a welcome distraction from the constant buzz of senior nonsense. During this time I don't have to worry about college admission, scholarships or be invested in Taryn's clique drama. She eats up the attention and admiration from everyone, particularly when she gets casted for a lead in a play. When we went back to public school, there was this expectation that it was going to be weird. After watching hours of television, with plotlines revolving around outsiders being rebuked by the general pop--it was natural to be wary. But no, not many people cared if we were homeschooled for a bit. They found us interesting and entertaining. I remember Taryn glowing with pride when our classmates would invite us over to their table for lunch or to hang out after pickup. I was bored and preferred Dad showing me his creations or mom her medicines. It amazes me how right the weapons always felt in my hand, especially the weight of the sword. Dad beamed and said I looked like a knight, I think that's why I took to sports so easily, I played other sports in the off season to stay in shape and ready. Mom would lecture us when we'd play with wooden swords about strategy and cunning. Vivi would leave the room, she didn't want to hear stories of battles that didn't happen or the undercut ways to win wars. But the way mom would describe would sound so real, she'd stop talking about when dad came in the room. Mom would wipe us with poultice and make us strands of hawthorn and rowan berries when we'd play in the woods. After we started hanging out with other children she'd stop doing it as much.
A teammate of mine had tackled the lights out of me, I felt the wind get wicked out of my lungs. This wasn't like me, to be here but not totally here. To be absentminded.
In the locker room, after a very long cold shower and scaring some of my teammates with my scowl, I slowly get dressed.
"Pick your poison." Katie, dark haired with deep bronze skin holds up a kinesthetic tape and baby aspirin. I pick the aspirin, taking two with a swig from my water bottle. Katie hands me the tape anyway and I reluctantly start to wrap up my ribs, hissing during the process. The phrase sticks in my head, like a rhyme.
Pick your poison.Pick your Poison.Pick your--
"Do you want to go to Laken's party tonight?" Mara asks us. She's the one that tackled me out on the field, she gives me an apologetic expression. I throw a pair of dirty socks at her and call it even. Mara accepts this with a wrinkled nose and sits next to me, waiting for our answer. Katie nods, we were going to go hang out at a coffee shop and do homework. But after today, I can blow some steam.
"Let me just drop off my bag at home at first." They both give me an unimpressed eye roll. They suspect that I'll bail, I'm not a huge fan of Laken's parties. They tend to get out of hand, not in a fun way either. "I gotta run it by parents first, you guys know how my mom hates texts."
They nod. It's only half true that , mom hates when we text her, she'd prefer seeing our faces with face time or in person. She's been wary about us being on our own as we get older. Dad usually covers for us, like he did for that night in woods. He thinks mom worries too much.
"Hey Jude, there's someone here for you." One of the junior girls notifies me. My brow furrows in frustration. Taryn can be a real priss sometimes, she detests coming into the locker room. Taryn complains of the smell, but I swear the boys locker room's stench wafts all the way to the tennis courts.
Katie gives annoyed snort, " That sister of yours is a piece of work."
Before I can defend Taryn, Mara interrupts and says she'll walk me out and makes us confirm that we'll meet up later. Katie and I give a half hearted okay. When I try to hand Katie back her wrap she tells me to keep it. I give her a thanks, which is rare. We call it a truce.
As we're walking out Mara starts to ask me what's the deal between Katie and Taryn. I explain that those two have always been at odds since middle school. Taryn accuses her of being a nag and a bore, Katie says that she's pushy and manipulative. Mara sighs, but before she can say anything, a slight girl with thick cloud of white hair greets me. Except she's not a girl.
Mara waves goodbye, telling me she'll hopefully see me later at Laken's party. My visitor greets me but I can see through disguise. A boy in passing gives her a hooded look, she responds by winking. As she retrieves a beanie from her back pocket, he looks back repeatedly hoping to catch her eye. She's oblivious, or probably doesn't care, as she asks me to follow her. Without hesitation, she grabs my hand to lead me anyway.
Not sure why, but I follow her. I could easily take her, magical being or not. We walk the past tennis courts cutting through the now empty fields to some abandoned benches. There's a slumped figure sipping what seems like a slurpee, the closer I get i can see that he isn't human either. His crooked nose hangs at a strange angle while his skin has unhealthy green gleam beneath it. I ask if he's alright and she grins like it's a joke. She whistles and he looks up but I see another figure shoots up like a bullet.
I stop, unable to help my jaw from dropping. Its Cardan dressed in casual clothes like his companions.
"Are you all actually dressed in regular clothes or is that glamour?" The three of them stiffen. "Is everyone really that surprised that I figured that out? I mean my sister is one of you. Half of you?" I wave off that math problem and face the one at hand.
"Ah. Yes and no." Cardan admits, the other two don't know how to process his open honesty. He makes introductions, "These are my acquaintances, I trust them with most things and I hope you do the same. This is the Bomb and the Roach." The male does a little curtsey while the female does a flourish with her hat as she bows.
"Fancy," I admonish," I am Jude as you all know." I bend my knees a little and awkwardly wave. Cardan beams and I start to notice all the little details. He's wearing an outfit that seems oddly familiar with a few tags sticking out. The Bomb and the Roach's attire look worn and inconspicuous.
"Funny, I would have thought you referred to as the Queen." The Roach points one of my many embellished sweaters I have on. An oversized maroon pullover with my nickname scrawled in gold on the sleeves and crown on my chest. Dad gave it to me for Christmas. There's a knitted cal that's meant to look like a crown at the back of my closet. I wear that after a game to show good sportsmanship.
"Yeah. Hey, I've seen that before. Did you get that off a mannequin at Target?" I squint and start to pull off the tags. Yep, definitely from Target. I notice the venti spiked black matte Starbucks cup in Cardan's hand. "DUDE! I've been saving up to get that. Where did you get this?"
"I just happened to come upon this today." Cardan casually shrugs but the way he phrases it sounds strange.
" You took this from someone didn't you." I can imagine him on his way out of the store with bags in hand, spotting this cup and taking someone's order.
"It was there in the open, nobody had claimed it. I assure you." Cardan rises and beckons me forward. "Did you get any of my messages?"
Before I could answer, the Bomb steps in. "Your highness, perhaps it be a better idea to have this conversation in closed quarters."
Cardan assess her but agrees with a tilt of his chin. "Jude, would you join me?" He extends his hand towards me as the other two turn to leave into the woods.
"Where? Wait where are they going?"
Cardan sighs and extends his hand again, "Do you trust me?"
Without hesitation I hand him my bag and say, "No. But I've got questions. Perhaps you can fill me in." I take his hand instead and start leading him away from the forest and start dialing my mom's number. I press a finger to my lips, gesturing for him to stay quiet. Mom picks up on the third ring, opting for face time.
"Hey mom. My friends and I are going out to eat and I might spend the night at Katie's. Laken's having a party." I roll my eyes at the last bit.
Mom tucks her hair behind her ears, revealing the seashell drop earrings Taryn gave her for mother's day. With a grimace, she calls Laken an awful child which prompts her to ask questions. Where's Taryn? Have I heard from Vivi? Why am I going to said awful child's thing if I detest it so much? What's the point of having so many children if they dont keep an eye for each other?
While I answer her questions with mostly shrugs and half hatched answers, Cardan observes the contents of my backpack. I throw my shoe at him, quickly hanging up before my mom can hear his disapproval.
"You should be so lucky." Cardan sighs and pulls on a beanie with my name emblazoned on it. Taryn made that so people don't confuse us, I'm not that narcissistic. "Ah, there it is. So you did get my messages." He flips through my notebooks and pulls out what looks like the feather I found in class today.
Cardan zips up my backpack while I decide what's the best course of action.
"Is it safer if we go to a human place to eat or your potential hide hole?" He cocks an eyebrow in my direction. "I only assume it's not where you actually live. I doubt I'm welcomed there."
Cardan fixes upon me, measuring my pause and I'm afraid he can hear how fast my heart is beating. I put my hand on my hips, relieved that I left my sports bag in my locker. All that weight might slow us down again.
"Let's go somewhere safe for the both of us." Cardan gestures and I take his hand to lead us to the diner.
We walk at a leisurely pace as Cardan takes in the sights and observing my kind in their natural habitats. We make it to the Moonlight diner to find it mostly empty. I lead Cardan to a booth and wait for the waitress to greet us.
Watching Cardan bounce on the seats and dump the sugar out of the canister prompts me to apologize and order water and napkins. The waitress is not amused by my companion's peculiar behavior. I mouth that he's an exchange student before she walks away. Cardan flips through the menu, catching the reflection off the laminated surface, he starts to flip it back and forth.
Repeatedly.
When the waitress returns I ask for more time. With an annoyed look she leaves us and I slam my hand to stop Cardan from playing with the menu.
"What do you recommend?" Cardan sits forward with his hands under his chin, upset that I ruined his fun.
"The cat tendencies with you." I point out and then quickly add,"If you have a sweet tooth then I suggest the pie a la mode or a milkshake." He holds a hand up and asks for both.
When she comes back I ask for two order of the pie, a vanilla milkshake, and coffee. I'm going to need the caffeine.
"So...where to begin?" I muse bringing the cup of black coffee to lips. My eyes flicker to his as he's sipping his water. Cardan makes a face but keeps sipping it anyway.
"Let's start with my unanswered messages." Right then the waitress, Cindee, as it says on her name tag brings Cardan his milkshake. An expression flies across her face as she catches the last bit of our conversation. She walks away thinned lipped, intrigued by our table.
With a clearing of my throat I explain that I haven't a clue about what he's referring to. I raise my legs to put my feet on his seat. Cardan's eyes fall on them and he asks about my knee. I tell him that it's better, I hardly notice it at all. What I don't tell him is that I saved the scrap of cloak that he wrapped it in. It's locked away in my jewelry box.
"Those riddles and rambling in my notebook...the feather, were those what you're referring to?"
Once again, Cindee chimes in with our food. When I thank her, she slowly retreats away to tend to somebody else.
"That and other things. What about the others? I had them delivered on your walk home and at your window." When he sees my confusion he reaches for my backpack and retrieves an acorn. Before I can ask how that got in there, he pops the top off and reveals a thin scroll of parchment with familiar scrawling.
"Is that why I keep finding acorns everywhere?!" I take it and hold it up to the light. Sure enough it's a message from Cardan about how he missed me for my morning run. Asking if he could join me. I try to imagine Cardan running and instantly laugh. He does not find this amusing.
"I sent them in pinecones and on ribbons. Imagine my surprise when I heard you finally came upon the ones I wrote upon your notebook. That's why I sent the Bomb to meet you. The Roach helped me blend in, you pointed out that my usual attire can be distracting."
"Sorry, I still can't wrap my head around the pinecone thing." There's a few that I found on the other side of my windowsill, one just this morning. Cardan makes crude noise. He tells me not to apologize ever to a faerie, especially himself. I reach for the extra milkshake cylinder and take a spoonful. Make sure to keep that in mind.
"What did you want to tell me that you couldn't tell me in person?"
One of Cardan's ears peek out of the beanie as he sips on his milkshake. I glance at it quickly before looking out the window. When we were little, Vivi let us touch her ears. The childish urge to trace them surfaces and I silently repress it. Sitting on my hands, I wait for his answer.
"I wanted to make sure that I was keeping up with my promise. You asked me to refrain from stalking you and I didn't want to offend you."
I turn to face him with a softened gaze, "Me too. I mean, I was half expecting you to show up at my window. I'm pretty sure Locke has been visiting my sister. Taryn doesn't want to admit that he can't tell us apart. " I recall how he called taped on my window one night and I threaten to push him off the roof.
Cardan bursts out laughing, the beanie falling off his head. Without missing a beat, he reaches to put it back on. His cheeks are rosy and I can't help the corners of my mouth from tilting up.
"I must admit, I was...wary of Locke being around. He tends to fancy himself a charmer."
I think back to the party, as Cardan and I conversed in the dark, from the corner of my eye I saw Locke talking with the blue haired girl.
"He doesn't sound like a good friend to me. I couldn't help but noticing the way the blue haired girl glared at us. They seemed to be talking half the night." I take a spoon and being to dig into my melting pie a la mode. "Was she an ex of yours?" I ask point blank.
Cardan frowns, "An ex?"
Taking a bite of the pie and melted cream, I supply the phrases 'ex-lover' and ''ex-girlfriend'. He nods and I can deduce that Locke had everything to do with it.
"Makes sense. I thought only girls on the field wanted to melt me with their eyes. Now I got a mermaid out to murder me."
Another chuckle leaves his lips, "It truly surprises me how quick you are." He uses his spoon to taste from my plate and I slap it away with my own. The metal clanging hirts my teeth but this is my life's honor I'm defending. He reaches for it anyway and I smack that back of his hand with my spoon this time. "Young lady, may I remind you that this is a prince you are dealing with. Most would find you bold--"
"Most do find me bold, dear prince." And I rapidly take a spoonful of his cherry pie and smile triumphantly at slight of hand.
Cardan does not find that amusing, "I've punished others for less you know." His voice is laden thick with warning and I serve him an equally cool tone.
"As have I. Though you are a prince, as funny as you may find, many consider me queen. This is my domain sort to speak and you are my guest. I expect you abide by our customs as most would yours."
His eyes darken at my words and he rapts his long fingers on the table. "If our roles were reversed and you were amongst my people instead of yours, would you pay me the expected respect of my title?"
"If you behaved as a faerie of your title should, with just and fairness?" I ask and he gives a little nod," If you didn't provoke or threaten my livelihood I might abide by those natural laws of your world. But that is neither here nor there. Besides, I can't imagine a situation were I would even get that close to you, much less be accepted under your court."
" Jude, even you with your lightly heeded title are respected amongst your peers. Though my kind are by your definition unpredictable but we still abide by rules and Mark's of respect. There are exceptions at my court, under my father's rule nothing quite surprises me. A human to be accepted as part of the gentry, it's not unheard of."
I'm not convinced, "Okay. Give me an example. A real example not something that you heard some inkling of from centuries before." I play with the last bits of my food the conversation turning my stomach as our light attitudes are dampened by what goes unsaid.
What a ridiculous notion, to fall in love with a person from a different world.
Cardan chooses his words carefully and he begins to trace the lines of my open palm. I've realized that he does this as a distraction and come to find all these excuses he makes to touch me. As if I might disappear like a whiff if smoke. He observes a garnet ring that I have on my ring finger. It belongs to my mom, theres an insignia on it. Honestly it could be anything for that matter.
"Actually, there was a general. A Red Cap that married a mortal." Cardan picks apart my fingers, memorizing their shape and intricate grooves. "I've been told that my mother was great friends with this woman, which is rare for such a mortal to not only be accepted but recognized as his legitimate wife. Those two would be at the center of it all causing mirth and chaos. One day the general comes back from battle to find his residence burned to the ground. His wife and child burned to ash."
I pull my hand away from the story. Something about it sounding so familiar. My voice is quiet and I manage to keep the quake out of it when I ask him to continue.
"Nobody knows. There are rumors that his enemies took advantage of his absence to take their revenge. Others say perhaps she had a spurned lover who committed a crime of passion." Cardan's eyes become engrossed with the outside world for a moment," But I believe otherwise. I'm convinced that our world, like for most humans, threatened to consume her and she ran away to start anew. Our ways are not for everyone you see. We fae are naturally violent and bloodthirsty. Our hedonistic lifestyles have lead many of then to abandoned their offspring to other faeries or creatures a like to look after them. Even at times switching us with human babies so that their parents can supply us with love and affection."
We stay silent, even as Cindee brings us our check and I hand her the money to pay. She returns with my change and I leave her a tip beneath the now empty sugar canister.
Cardan doesn't turn away instead he waits patiently for me to react or say anything. I don't do either but just sit there. My phone rings and Cardan's face finally breaks to retrieve my buzzing device. Its Taryn.
I quickly text back a response. Mom had told her that I left with some friends to go eat out before a party. She's making sure I meet up with her and that I wear something appropriate. I send her a snarky response and an illusive idk. Taryn quickly texts me back to no be lame and the time she expects me to be there. She's at a friend house getting ready it seems.
"I gotta go. Everyone's expecting me attend a kickback or whatever." I reach for my stuff and get up to leave. It takes a minute for me to go outside and process what he said. I'm not sure if the story sounds familiar or if it's a warning of what's to come if I choose to continue down this path.
Path? What am I going on a soul quest? No! I'm 17 and a senior in high school, waiting to go to college and figure out my life here. Nothing's changed. Except I met this weird boy whose definitely been stalking me for several months now. Sending me messages via pinecones and holding mybhand carrying my bag. The first part is off but the rest of it isn't anything new. I mean I've had boyfriends before that would do that stuff. Like Collin, he did that all the time before we broke up over the summer before college. Why I am worried about boy or whatever he is? This is dumb, my feminist foremothers did not--
"Jude are you okay?" Mara asks and I practically jump out of my skin.
While I was silently tail spinning, Mara and Katie happen to be going by. I'm not sure what I looked like, standing outside the Moonlight diner, staring at the void as all this new stuff came crashing down on me. But nonetheless, I'm glad they showed up when they did.
Katie and Mara share a moment before asking me where I'm headed. Katie's eyes narrow down at my backpack and she questions me about it. Just then, the last person that I wanted to be there decided to catch up with me. My friends do not hide their ogling as he butts in.
"Whose this?" Mara asks, wiggling her eyebrows.
"Oh this? This is Car-rigan. He's my new next door neighbor." Katie's sniper eyes move from my backpack back to me and then Cardan. Mara repeats the name that she was just given and Cardan promptly nods.
"That's what I'm called. It's a family name." Katie doesn't seem to buy it and asks where does he live because its obvious my family lives in every secluded area. "Its a hard to find but I can assure you it's back there."
They offer to give us a lift, that way we can all wait and leave for the party at the same time. I'm about to refuse until Cardan accepts their offer. As we get into the car, I worry if the amount of iron will kill him. But he seems unbothered by it for the most part. He reaches for my hand. I reflexively pull it way, still shaken by our conversation.
When we get to my door, they're surprised to see him follow me out. They offer to take him home but I decline. I'm surprised when they pull away, they text me that they were heading to moonlight diner for some grub anyway and just to text them when we were ready. Mara sent me a wink in our group chat and I had a hard time understanding what she meant.
Surprise surprise, my dad was out back. It was already dark but there was an half empty pizza box on the table. Typical. Cardan looked around, mystified by it all. There were drawings and portraits scattered throughout the house with pictures of all of us even Vivi. Recently there was a one of her and her girlfriend Heather on the fridge. Dad had wondered aloud if she should be included in our family Christmas card. Mom pointed out that we never had a family Christmas card.
"Yeah, it's an eclectic mix of bohemian meets OCD. It's like mom likes the idea of chaos but lives for rigid order. Don't get mud on the carpet, she'll skin you alive and show all her friends her rare pearl prince throw rug in the spring. "
I tell Cardan to wait there as I go upstairs. But I hear my dad call my name from the back porch and I grab Cardan's hand and race with him up the stairs. I shove him in my room and lean over the banister with a 'yeah dad?'. Dad pokes his head through the door way but doesn't move to join me. He thought it was me when he saw me through the window and he offers me pizza. From here I can just make out the graying temples of his hair, most men in his family gray early. He pushes his glasses that he seems to use more of now in older age, his olive skin with a smattering of freckles that make him seem younger than he is. Dad smiles and asks about my day. I give him mostly sincere answers and he tell me a bit about his. I'm trying not dance in panic because theres a boy/magical prince in my room. Dad doesn't catch on and waves me off to get ready. He informs me that mom is out with her friends so she's more than likely to come home buzzed and forgetful about curfew. Dad shrugs playfully and I giggle at his cleverness. The old man has it figured out.
When I hear the door close, watching dad's retreating figure return to his converted barn through the back porch window, I race back to my room. Cardan is casually sifting through my things, bauble earrings are threaded in his lobes and my knitted crown sits right above his head.
"You know it's really unfair how attractive you still manage to be when quite clearly look silly." I finally drop my bag and jump to lay on the bed. Cardan removes the earrings but not the crown before sitting beside me. In a flash I rip it off and replace it the hat from before. This time without tucking his ears. I nod at my handy work and lay down. Cardan doesn't move. At first. Eventually he moves to lay beside me, put feet dangling off the side of the bed.
"Now what?" Cardan asks but stay fixated on the ceiling. If I were to turn, there's no question what i would do. I would behave illogical as most girls would have done. But I Jude Duarte have no time to act illogical.
"This whole afternoon just came out of left field. It was unexpected. A pleasant un-expectation. Though I can't let it happen again." My voice sounds different but it's the tone I need to convey right now.
"Jude, look at me." Cardan's voice is soft but there's an edge to it like my own.
"If I do," I keep myself focused on this one spot above me, " will you kiss me?"
"If you allow me to do so, yes."
For a moment we don't move, my chest barely rising up and down nor do I hear the breathing of his. It almost startles me when Cardan begins to talk again. He's waving a thin piece of black almost gossamer fabric above me and I recognize what it is.
"Why did you keep this? I had earnestly believed this meant nothing to you. Just a simple bandage." He is about to toss it when I take it from him, his fingers quick to tangle with mine. "Jude?" Cardan asks softly.
I close my eyes as I admit "After the night, when I woke up in my room. I kept it as a reminder that that night was real. In case I ever forgot to keep my word."
"A reminder of my favor." There's a dulcet tone to his voice as he says my name again but I stay fixed upon the ceiling. It isn't until he start to kiss my fingers, palms then wrists. The controlled yet hungry manner he rolls up till we see chest to chest and he buries his hands in my hair.
For a moment, I allow myself to be young foolish and illogical. But even I have a hard time swallowing that lie.
Chapter 13:
March 6, 2022
Jake Gosling nearly attacked one of the paparazzies today before he left his house. Adam Gosling was furious and threatened to call the police. Must be some family drama happening in the Gosling house hold.
***
There was a knock at the door and I groaned and pulled the blankets over my head. I just wanted to get some fucking sleep. I swear I was never able to sleep till my alarm. To my surprise, it wasn’t my mom’s annoying and demanding voice. But rather… Mr. Harrison.
“Sawyer. I’m taking you to school today because I am driving you to work tonight,” Mr. Harrison said.
I groaned and said, “Thanks but I can drive myself.”
“Sure, you can but I want to get to know my girlfriend’s son more so I am driving you.”
I released a breath of annoyance and got out of bed. My feet landed on the ground and I ran my hands through my hair. Fucking hell. I needed coffee. I walked over to my closet and pulled out a blue shirt, denim pants and shoes and once I got dressed, I exited my room.
I hated being around Mr. Harrison. Why didn’t he realize that? I didn’t want to get to know him. I didn’t want him dating my mom. I didn’t want him replacing my dad. No one could replace my dad.
I couldn’t believe that my mom was trying to replace him. When she should have been searching for him and tried to get the relationship back, she had to start dating other people. My mom lasted five years with my dad and made him leave us when I was three. I never had many memories with him and I wanted that. But she stole that from me.
Once I was finished getting ready for the school day, I walked into the kitchen and when I looked at the coffee pot, I realized there was only enough for one cup. I knew I needed to leave that for my mom because otherwise she’d yell at me. I shook my hair in between my fingers and then jumped a little when Mr. Harrison entered the kitchen and said, “I figured we could get some Starbucks?”
I raised my eyebrows in annoyance and said, “Fine.”
My mom walked up to Mr. Harrison and pecked him on the cheek. Mr. Harrison smiled, turned to my mom, placed his hand on her neck and pulled her in for a kiss. I rolled my eyes and said, “Really?”
Mom giggled and it wasn’t her normal obnoxious laugh, which I hadn’t heard in years. It was her flirtatious giggle. One that everyone had when they saw someone they were attracted. Not going to lie… it was strange hearing it for the first time in years.
“Well, I hope you boys have fun. Good luck,” mom said. She kissed Mr. Harrison once and walked out of the house to start her job.
I clenched my jaw and when the front door shut, Mr. Harrison turned to me and said, “Ready?”
I shoved my hands in my pockets and shrugged. He then walked me outside and took me to his BMW. I honestly wanted to scratch the thing. I could never afford this car even if I tried. People with cars like him thought that they could get away with everything because they were rich. They never once had to work for anything in their lives. They were born rich. Placed into a rich family by chance.
I was placed into a middle-class family and being raised by a single mother. Mr. Harrison would never understand the struggle that we had to face. All he’d do was throw money at us as though we were a wishing well and he’d think that fix everything.
“Do you have any music suggestions?” Mr. Harrison asked as we entered the car.
I shook my head and he said, “Good. Then I hope you like Beyoncé.”
***
As we drove to Starbucks, Mr. Harrison said, “Have you applied to any Universities yet?”
I shook my head. I didn’t know why people kept asking me that question. I didn’t want to college. Why was that so hard to understand? You don’t necessarily need a degree for most jobs. Besides, most people lie about their education anyway.
“Why is that? You’re seventeen Sawyer. You should be excited that you get to move onto the next phase in life.”
People treated life like a video game it seemed like. The minute you graduated from Kindergarten, people congratulated you on making it to the next phase. When you graduated from elementary school, they’d congratulate you again. Middle school and high school was when your life choices became more risky and effect what would happen in the years to come. Life was a video game.
“I don’t want to go to college. It’s a scam and besides, most people can get jobs anyway by working their way up. Unless they want to be doctors, lawyers or politicians, they don’t really need a degree.”
Mr. Harrison nodded and pulled up to a drive through Starbucks. It took us a good ten minutes before we made it to the speaker to order our drinks. “Hi there welcome to Starbucks. What can I get for you?” a man on the other side of the speaker said.
“Can I get a venti latte and…” Mr. Harrison turned me and said, “What would you like?”
I tapped my chin, tilted my head and said, “Tall iced matcha drink.”
He nodded and said my order to the man on the side of the speaker. “That’ll be $10.50 at the window,” he said.
“Thank you,” Mr. Harrison said.
We drove up the window slowly but surely and paid for our drinks. Once we paid, the man gave us our drinks and Mr. Harrison drove me to school.
***
At last we arrived at school. Mr. Harrison pulled up to the curb and said, “I’ll see you after school. Also, Friday is your day off. Unless you want to work but a lot of people request at least two days off.”
I sighed and thought about it for a minute. I really didn’t want to go to work but… if I wanted to move out then I needed the money. I was determined to move out when I turned eighteen and I meant it too.
I sighed and said, “As much as I want to have the day off… I’ll work tomorrow.”
Mr. Harrison sighed and said, “Alright. Have a good at school.”
I gave him a small smile and mumbled, “Thanks.”
I exited the car and entered the school building. There were so many paparazzies today and I wished they’d just go the fuck away. I already had to deal with so much shit at home, I did not want cameras everywhere just because there was a fucking celebrity at my school. Need I remind everyone that he didn’t do anything to make him fucking famous! It was his parents!
I ran my hands through my hair and entered the school building. Mike was speaking with Phineas and I decided to go over to him. Mike immediately turned his body towards me and smiled, revealing his teeth. “Hey Sawyer.”
Phineas flicked his eyes between us and said, “Sorry. Should I go?”
I glanced over at him and said, “No. It’s fine. You can stay.”
Phineas sighed and folded his arms over his chest. I cleared my throat and said, “H-how are you?” I realized I had no idea what I was going to say to him. I hadn’t really texted him since we hung out at the Diner but even then… I kind of missed him.
“I’m good… you?” he scratched the back of his head and swayed side to side on his feet.
“I’m good.”
There were a few moments of silence and then there was a bunch of noise coming from the school entrance. They were the paparazzies following Jake into the school. Principal Waters hurried out of his office and ushered them out of the building. He even threatened to call the police if he had to.
Jake smirked, rolled his eyes and walked over to his locker where Lucy was standing next to. He smiled and when he stood in front of her, he tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear and began speaking with her.
Mike coughed and then said, “Well anyway… Jake is having a party on Saturday night. Perhaps you’d be willing to come?”
I raised my eyebrows, giving him a teasing look. He then shook his head and said, “I know Jake isn’t the most likeable guy in the world but, he does know people and believe it or not… connections matter to businesses.”
I sighed, knowing he was right but not wanting to admit it. “Fine. I’ll go,” I said rolling my eyes.
Mike smiled and the final school bell rang. We hurried to our first class and Mr. Hall glared at us and said, “Mr. Ross and Mr. Brown, can you explain to the class why you two are late?”
The class snickered and when I looked over at Lucy, she gave me an apologetic smile. I smiled back and Mike said, “Um… no reason sir… We just missed the bell.”
Mr. Hall looked unimpressed by his response. He turned to the class and said, “Thanks to Sawyer and Mike, you all will be having a pop quiz.”
Mr. Hall seemed rather sad today. He was not in the mood to teach and sometimes I wondered why he even had the job in the first place. He wore jeans, a black buttoned up shirt and a blue tie. His hair seemed to be just brushed back and it appeared as though he didn’t have any coffee this morning. I wondered why he was upset.
The class groaned and glared at Mike and I. Mike gave me an annoyed look, shook his head and sat in the back of the classroom. I of course, had to sit in the middle because no other seats were empty.
After class, I walked out with Mike and then as I exited the classroom, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and saw Lucy standing in front of me. She was in a white skirt with a yellow shirt and brown sandals. Her hair was up in a messy bun with two strands of hair in front of her ears. She was honestly adorable.
“Hey Sawyer. Could you sit with me and Jake at lunch today?” Lucy asked.
I blinked at her request. I did not expect her to ask me that question. Why the hell did Lucy want me to sit next to her and Jake at lunch? She must not have realized I didn’t like the guy very much.
I sighed and said, “You sure Jake wouldn’t get mad?”
Lucy shrugged and said, “You’re my friend are you not?”
I nodded. “Well then he can suck it up and deal with it. I can sit who I want to sit by.”
I laughed and said, “Alright, alright. I’ll sit by you.”
She pumped her fist in the air and said, “Hell yeah!”
I laughed and as Lucy stepped forward, Jake yelled from behind her, “Lucy!”
Lucy rolled her eyes, looked over her shoulder and said, “Coming!”
I leaned forward and said, “You know you are not his puppy dog, right?”
She nodded, shrugged and skipped over happily to Jake. The thing with celebrities was… no matter what they did to you, you’d let them. Even if they hurt you.
