Came out first but gets called a knock off anyway

Does way more weird and interesting things with the core concepts

Consistently gets weirdly existential in ways that don't usually happen in art aimed at that age group

Has better developed characters with more depth

Has a bunch of material that just isn't available in the US because the companies with the rights don't see it as worth the fuss

Would get you bullied if you tried to talk about it in middle school

The parallels are all there.

Currently rereading the Young Wizards books for the first time in years and here is what I’ve read so far in a nutshell:

So You Want to Be a Wizard: New York is amazing! Cry about a white hole and a car.

Deep Wizardry: The ocean is amazing! Cry about a shark.

High Wizardry: Space is amazing! Cry about a bird. I mean, she’s okay, but still, cry about her.

A Wizard Abroad: Ireland is amazing! Cry about some side characters we never really got to know, I guess, but you might as well save your tears for the next book. You’re gonna need them.

Help I started writing a new story. I have so many projects already that need work on and instead I start a new fanfic 😭

So the two fandom tags I look at regularly are the Animorphs tag and the Young Wizards tag. One of the recent posts in the Animorphs tag was about whether Rachel from Animorphs could survive in the Hunger Games. That plus the idea of Young Wizards fanfic got me thinking, how would a wizard from the YW universe fare in the HG? How would they get their manual in? How would they hide their use of wizardry? Would they be able to withstand the temptation to just use wizardry to kill everyone else? What if surviving the HG is their Ordeal?

I'm sure this has been explored before, but it's fascinating to me. So I have a couple pages now of a story about a girl from District 12 who went deaf as a kid from an illness, who starts being able to hear the voice of the manual when she runs, mixed in with the sensation of the wind rushing past her and the drumming of her heartbeat. I haven't yet gotten to her saying the Wizards Oath, but she's going to say it then of course get named in the reaping.

I'll probably never finish it, but it's a fun idea and it's been fun to write purely for my own pleasure.

January fanbinding - What the butterflies said

Set myself a 2023 challenge to do a bookbinding project each month for an "actual book", i.e. something with written content rather than blank paper (or where I've made the content, as i partly want to make myself figure out formatting and dealing with an externally defined length). Also trying to use different styles of binding, so some added fun there figuring out what works for each!

I've just finished a reread of the Young Wizards books, so for my first project & pamphlet bind went with a YW fic, the wonderfully heartbreaking 'what the butterflies said' by @sunrisenebula

It was literally just the treads that were throwing me off! (And the mastcams but thats more understandable) looking at the model that is the MSL deck and as stated the navcams, and the wheels are MSL wheels but with perseverance treads (i.e. not chevrons)
