You’ve heard of Vegeta’s “Goku button,” now get ready for Sun Wukong’s “wife button.”

And yeah the last drawing was a slight reference to this screenshot from the OSP Journey to the West retelling

Liang Xiaodie having amnesiac resonance and remembering what cars and jets are while babysitting Red Son (I’m choosing to ignore that he was an infant during the events of jttw and making him at least 4-5)
She truly underestimated his ambition.
Bonus:
Tumblr media
This was just based off of me being surprised by the amount of mech when I first jumped into lmk. I’m pretty sure the monkey mech was MK’s own invention, but I think it’d be funny that he inherited the idea of making a mech from Wukong.

“I’ve waited for you for so long…
It wasn’t supposed to be like this.”
—-
Thank god I finished this before I go to anime north. I’ll consider this my early birthday illustrations.
I wanted to do a tragic juxtaposition with the Butterfly Maiden and the Monkey King due to the LBD interference. I’m proud of how this turned out, although I did give up on the background of the second drawing, so I just took a screenshot from the original Sun Wukong vs Lady Bone Demon scene from the Revenge of the Spider Queen special and used it as a backdrop.

What do the butterflies, Wukong, and Wukong’s baby monkeys all have in common? They all want the Mari’s attention.

I saw you reblog the triad au and I wonder how Mari would fit in to the au~
Ooh~ that's an interesting one.
According to @skittlescripts, the triad au is where Wukong does not go through with the journey and therefore did not receive enlightenment, so in the modern day he gets involved with organized crime.
I don't know myself if Mari goes still through the time loop and assumes the role of Liang Xiaodie, but she still has her butterfly wings somehow. To fit with the au, I think her family should be involved in the Singaporean mafia themselves.
How Mari met can go in two ways:
She flies off to China like she did in my original storyline with her, only her reason for running away was either because of disagreement with her family or needing some space away from the life of crime. Then... womp, womp, womp... she gets the attention of an infamous crime lord who intends to court her. Eh, it might not be so bad.
The Orozco-Leong Triad (the Butterfly Triad) have a meetup with Wukong's triad. Mrs. Leong begrudgingly puts her eldest daughter under Wukong's protection should Mari unintentionally attract any foes after she sprouted her wings.
Alongside being the wife of a crime boss, she's also a hidden weapon. She's still a talented markswoman whether it be in archery or guns (again with the Black Butler references).
Have some sketches I made because I was inspired:

I love how the triad au gives me so much Hades and Persephone from Hadestown vibes

Just realized the time period in journey to the west, girls often married young, so people the pilgrims met probably assumed mari was already married to one of them or wukong was already saying they were married and mari never bothered correcting because she didn't know what he was saying at first
That's interesting to think about. In the Tang Dynasty, women were allowed to get married by the time they hit 15. Mari was around 19 when she was thrown into the past and assumed the role of Liang Xiaodie, so it's fair to assume that she was quite possibly spoken for but could not remember it because of her amnesia.
Sandy and Sanzang: You poor thing. If you have a husband, he must miss you a lot.
Bajie: Sweet! Free girl!
Wukong: I saw her first!
Wukong (and probably Bajie) practically seethes at the idea that Xiaodie might be married. He can't help worry about the day she regains her memories and confirms that her heart belongs to someone else. Still, they fall in love anyway during the journey and Wukong started proudly saying that Xiaodie was his wife. I'm actually working on and off on a short animatic about that, and I've been holding it off for a while. Not sure if I want to finish it. Maybe I should buy squidtoon to animate better

Continuing off of my first introduction of my LMK/JTTW oc, I realize that I should give her a second introduction expanding on her character as well as a summary of a story concept I had in mind. It still won't leave my head. Forgive me as I tend to ramble a lot.
Inspired by @skittlescripts and @theweepingegg,
Tumblr media
(Omg, I just noticed that I forgot to draw her freckles)
I changed her robes because I ended not liking the silhouette of the first one. And I gave her a butterfly brooch too instead of a pendant
She goes by many names depending on who is addressing her. She’s born as Marisol Orozco-Leong, although her obsession with butterflies earned her the affectionate nickname, Mariposa, by her relatives. Historians refer to her as the Butterfly Lady, Queen of Butterflies, or Butterfly Maiden… or just Sun Wukong’s wife.
Guanyin gave her the name Liang Xiaodie after she rescued and revived her. We’ll get to that in a bit.
Her farsightedness being used as an advantage in long ranges was an idea I got from Black Butler who has the gunslinging Mey-Rin, a maid who can see from miles away.
By the end of the journey she was rewarded with a pair of functional butterfly wings to symbolize her growth in character, or more so her metamorphosis.
Her wings are based off of the Asian Swallowtail. During her time as an unwilling host to Lady Bone Demon, her wings closely resemble that of a zebra swallowtail or a tree nymph butterfly
(Yes, you read that right: LBD chose her instead of the little girl. You know, to hit Wukong where it hurts.)
Tumblr media
I’ve been researching a lot on butterflies in Chinese culture, and I hope my resources are correct. If not, please correct me:
One thing that often comes up is that butterflies denote romantic love. There’s also the Chinese folktale of Romeo and Juliet, “The Butterfly Lovers” (this loosely alludes to Wukong and Xiaodie’s relationship)
They can even signify longevity, rebirth, and good fortune
There were also a few articles that say there are legends that depict the Bodhisattva Guanyin as a butterfly.
Here are just some illustrations of Mariposa/Xiaodie. The goal was to depict her change throughout the journey, being sent back to her time right after, and her plan to reunite with Wukong going awry when LBD interferes.
Tumblr media
Now, for the plot. Watch me ramble even more.
The whole concept is pretty much a time loop that circles back to LMK’s modern era, and Mari experiencing the 14-year journey that was actually condensed within her 2-week coma. That's the most coherent way I could word the situation.
In an ironic twist, Mariposa is not much of a social butterfly and is more of a shrinking violet, a cocooned caterpillar if you will.
Being born and raised in Singapore and her mother having Han Chinese ancestry, Mari and her siblings all grew up on the stories of Journey to the West.
Given the fact that demons roam around freely among humans, I like to think that the events of JTTW are treated like actual historical events in LMK and not just a legend.
Now, here’s where the time loop begins:
What kicks everything off was a college program that Mari joins where students get to spend learning for a semester at sea and travelling the world
By the end of the semester, however, the ship gets caught in the storm and Mari drowns in the event.
I don’t want to explain how she got sent back to the Tang Dynasty. I mostly just want to keep that ambiguous.
While Guanyin and her disciple are out looking for the scripture pilgrim, they came across a girl who was half-dead and washed up on a shore. They revive her and nurse her back to health and find out that she has no memories.
How she got the name Liang Xiaodie, Guanyin found her surname (or one of them), Leong or 梁, stitched into her bag, but to the Bodhisattva, it read to her as Liang. (It's Mari's mother's surname. Leong is the Singaporean transliteration of Liang)
Xiaodie was chosen as her given name for her butterfly brooch and the several butterfly embroideries on her clothes.
Xiaodie slowly begins to regain her memories, mostly for basic things on surviving in the wilderness and gaining muscle memory on how to use her bow and arrows again like a master, but not enough to remember her real name or her life before.
Like with the other Pilgrims, Guanyin suggests that Xiaodie should join the scripture pilgrim. Before Guanyin leaves, she gives Xiaodie's bow the ability to summon arrows of her own will so that she may never run out of ammo.
She ends up meeting Tripitaka and Sun Wukong a little bit before Ao Lie is introduced.
Xiaodie is a bit of an odd addition to the group mostly because of her amnesia. The rest of the disciples were sent on this journey to gain redemption and enlightenment. Xiaodie doesn't have a story about her past sins as far as she knew. She went on this journey because she didn't know what else to do. She's the only other mortal of the pilgrimage and the sole woman to boot.
Xiaodie did not physically age at all during the journey. At first, she believed that it was because of the manfruit from the Ginseng Tree that Wukong fed her, but it was actually because her actual physical body was in her time healing in a hospital. Each year that passed by during the journey, only a day passes by in the modern era.
That isn't to say that the manfruit didn't affect her. Her lifespan was still extended even after waking up
Her memories came back at a snail's pace. She has dreams of being in a hospital bed and people watching over (her parents and the doctors).
In spite of her amnesia though, Xiaodie was seen as the brains of the group. Bits of amnesiac resonance come to her that are often useful when it comes to survival, such as knowing how to filter water of bacteria to drink, making soap or shampoos for hygiene, and even remembering bits of Journey to the West whenever she gets a bad feeling about their environment that they're in.
Another thing about her amnesia is how much her dialect differs from everyone else.
As Marisol/Mariposa, Xiaodie grew up speaking and writing Singaporean Mandarin and Modern Mainland Mandarin while everyone else around her uses Middle Chinese. So, it's a bit of a struggle for Xiaodie to communicate with others properly and vice versa.
On top of that, Xiaodie was not aware that she was sent centuries back for the longest time. She doesn't get why her companions don't know what cars or airplanes are or why they don't understand the slang she uses
It wasn't until near the end of the journey did she regain all of her memories and finally understands her time travel situation. It ended making her more reluctant to stay in the past much to Wukong's dismay.
At the end of the journey, Xiaodie and Wukong planned to get married, but with Xiaodie's reluctance and homesickness lingering, a swarm of butterflies takes her away, and she disappears in front of the pilgrims' eyes.
Wukong, devastated, was quickly informed that Xiaodie did not belong to this century, and had to be sent back to her family. The best thing Wukong could do for now is wait for her correct era to come around, which will roughly be 1400 years give or take.
Back in the modern era, Mari wakes up from her coma thinking everything was just a dream, but something feels off...
Everything she felt—the pain, the joys, and the experiences she went through felt real. She feels as if she actually hadn't spoken to her family in 14 years, and she feels like an older person stuck in a younger body.
Most of all, she feels as if she's lost something, or someone.
It wasn't until the butterfly wings appeared on her back that gave her the confirmation that she really did go on the journey for the scriptures and that her feelings for Wukong were indeed real
So, off we go. Mari makes a plan to go to China and find Wukong herself, and she lands herself in the coastal city of Megapolis. There she finds out that the Monkey King has a successor.
However, life sure loves to throw a wrench in her plans when the Lady Bone Demon escapes her prison and takes Mari's body as a host
She was the perfect host. How could the Monkey King ever want to hurt someone he's waited for so long?
Will Sun Wukong go through with the pain of possibly losing his beloved? Will the Mari find a way to break free of her possession? Find out next time on whatever shit I post next.

We know so much about the relationship Mari has with wukong but not with the other pilgrims and demons that are in the story. What are the relationships like? Describe it in any way.
Bull Demon Family Surprisingly, she gets along with them well enough. I like the idea of the demons and deities that Wukong has encountered prefer Mari over Wukong. It's like she's finally found her people. Let me tell you that they feel awful for being the reason that LBD took Mari as a host. They were also sad to hear that Xiaodie had to disappear for a good while. Young Red Son cried a lot.
Not sure what to say about PIF and DBK individually, but Red Son still respects his aunt Mari/Xiaodie in his adult years. They've bonded over modern vehicles before.
Nezha Not much to say, except that he also respected Xiaodie enough that he was sad about her disappearance. He does question her taste in men.
Macaque I'm leaning more into the idea that Macaque and Mari don't have any hard feelings towards each other in spite of their differing relationship with Wukong. Macaque probably warned her once about how dangerous it was being too close to the king. I've entertained the idea of a love triangle/unrequited love in there, but I feel like it's a bit overused. I'm still open to the idea though.
Ao Lie They get along swimmingly as the two youngest of the group. Xiaodie's not really one for affection, but she frequently lets him know how much he's appreciated. She is, however, a little irked about his inaction at times.
Sha Wujing She was scared of him at first ngl. It didn't take long though for them to start getting along. After one day of knowing each, Xiaodie was found casually riding on Wujing's shoulders when she sprained her ankle.
Zhu Bajie Let me direct once more to this drawing, particularly the second one.
The utter disgust she felt when he quickly moved on from his supposed wife because he was excited to see that he'd be joining the pilgrimage with Xiaodie. The next second, Bajie's head met the hard metal hilt of Xiaodie's knife. She got a scolding from Tripitaka about that.
They got past their differences with time, a long time, but Xiaodie will never forgive Bajie for getting Wukong kicked out of the group during the Lady Bone Demon incident.
Tang Sanzang Sanzang took pity on the girl as she had amnesia. He was optimistic about Xiaodie being much kinder than Wukong when they first met. Her shy disposition made him believe that. Even better was that her mere presence seemed to keep Wukong out of trouble. It wasn't until Zhu Bajie entered the group that Sanzang got his first warning flags that Xiaodie was turning into a menace.
I've said before that Xiaodie didn't always agree with the monk, but she's dedicated to her job in protecting him. But because of that, she resents him a little, and she feels bad about resenting him. Look, it's mentally and physically taxing to be a bodyguard, it comes with the job. Xiaodie respects that Sanzang wants to lead a non-violent life, but the least he could do is develop a lick of common sense so that they don't have to worry about him every five minutes. She wishes that he had more faith in Wukong's judgment about the demons they come across. I mean he can see through demonic illusions!
Oh man, now I feel like making an angsty comic where Xiaodie gets mortally wounded protecting Tripitaka, and it forces him to wake up to reality, especially after seeing Wukong and the others cry over her dying body. You bet your ass that Wukong is going to bust his way to the underworld for the second time to retrieve Xiaodie soul and erase her name from the book of death.
And that's it. I don't really have anything to say about Azure Lion, Peng, or Yellow Tusk other than that they definitely trapped her in the Scroll of Memory with Wukong in it. I'm also not sure what to put for Spider Queen or Yin and Jin.

Mari/Xiaodie Headcanons Part 3
Age
This is a category of its own.
Mari was 19 when she first landed in the Tang Dynasty and lost her memories. During the events of LMK, she was 21–22 as it took time for her to finish college while carefully planning to leave for China.
Because of the 14-year journey she went through, she's mentally in her early thirties. Time loops mixed with eating life-extending fruit are weird
My heart says that MK is 19, but my head says he's at least 20 (well, I guess he's 19 at heart even when he's well into adulthood). A storyboard artist sees Mei as 23, and I am apt to believe that Red Son is at the physical age of 24. I'm making this comparison because, it's truly a mystery on whether Mari is the second oldest or second youngest of the four because the journey is still something she experienced, albeit while in a coma.
It's like Narnia all over again when the adult Pevensie siblings get out of the closet and go back into their childhood bodies.
It gets even funnier when you consider that Red Son was physically and mentally younger than Mari/Xiaodie the last time she saw him (although Red was probably already biologically older than her regardless). Now, he's physically older than his aunt in the modern day.
Onstage
Mari has the voice of an angel. As Xiaodie, she has attracted demons and humans alike many a time with how enchanting she sounded much to Wukong's chagrin.
I think it'd be funny that Macaque and Mari both do well performing in front of crowds, but Sun Wukong does not.
Mari is used to performing in front of her large nuclear and extended family during events as well as singing in a choir at her school.
Past Wukong believed that there was a meaning to the songs she sang. There were no such meanings. Xiaodie was just regaining memories from singing. She sang "My Jolly Sailor Bold" often causing Wukong to get all huffy and jealous about his supposed "rival" whose name was William lmao.
Leaving Home
It was a difficult feat.
Mari left home without her phone, and therefore no GPS. She couldn't take it with her in order to prevent being tracked down. The layout of modern China differs greatly, so finding Flower Fruit Mountain was difficult.
On top of that, she gets caught in heavy rain hours after she took off from her balcony, rendering her wings too wet to fly. At the very least, she landed herself in a coastal area of China before she fell into the sea and relived her trauma of drowning.
8:00 AM, Mari is dead tired and wet, she finds shelter in a payphone and calls home to tell everyone that she's alright.
On a funnier side to this story, this is Mari's running away from home note.
Despair
There was a slight misunderstanding when Mari first heard about MK being a successor, and it caused Mari to lose courage in hoping to rekindle her relationship with Wukong for a bit.
She came to the conclusion that Wukong might have moved on from her and found someone else and then had MK. There's no way he would wait so long for her. She shouldn't have expected him to.
(Wrong! He did. He waited. Since she was born, Wukong would buy gifts for her on her birthday, thinking that "maybe this would be the year she comes back to me." Those gifts are still collecting dust on his mountain and in the Shame Temple.)
Mari cries in her hotel room that night. She considers going back to Singapore and apologizing to her family for leaving, making this trip a lost cause.
It takes a few days for her to get better, but then she hears something about a shame temple in the Monkey Village, which isn't too far away.
She decides that maybe she should go there, shed some light on the situation, and find out if Wukong found someone else. If he has moved on, Mari will accept forfeit and go back home.
And then the Lady Bone Demon sneaked up on her in the dead of night.
(Tbh, if it turns out Wukong and MK are related, I'm hoping that they're brothers. I don't mind Wukong acting like a dad, I just prefer MK and Wukong being bros. It's cuter imo.)
Marriage
I saw this tiktok of Wukong singing 'Get this Right,' a deleted song from Frozen 2, and I'm like this is how he would propose for the second time when they finally reunite after season 3:
Ahem, go on and guess what the picture below means for them:
Tumblr media
Other Random Headcanons
Mari owns a 10-foot caterpillar plushie that she had since she was 7. It's a comfort item to her. During her time as a pilgrim, Xiaodie made herself a small stuffed caterpillar to prevent any more sleepless nights.
Along with not aging because she was in a two-week coma for the journey, Xiaodie's hair only grew an inch after chopping it off and her pink hair dye barely faded away.
In a situation where Xiaodie is angry, it's arguably scarier than Wukong's temper because there is hardly any solution for the problem other than waiting for time to pass until she has cooled off. Xiaodie generally knows how to tame Wukong's rampages, but she stubbornly sticks to whatever mood she's in.

From B99 (of course)
Mari with her memories back, goes to butterfly valley in deep contemplation and Wukong finally finds her.
Wukong: ah! There you are. Thank god.
Mari: hey. How’d you find me?
Wukong: 10th day of the peach month, the great sage and the holy monk found the third pilgrim of our journey. This is where we came the first time we met and you fell in love with me.
Mari: Wukong.😏
Wukong: the night where you flirted with me for 20 seconds and I became obsessed with you forever.
*flashback*
Wukong is teaching Mari how to catch food in her mouth
Wukong: ready?
Wukong throws piece of food towards her and Mari fails immediately. Both chuckle in amusement.
*flashback ends*

☺️
Don’t know what else I should add other than this is just too cute. Wukong kind of left out the part that he was interested in her earrings at first and almost chased her around for if it weren’t for Sanzang though because he likes the shiny.

Wukong when anyone assumes the butterfly maiden joined sides with Lady Bone Demon:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wtdQotmw_d4&pp=ygUVc29ra2EgbW9vbiBnaXJsZnJpZW5k
Oh my god that's such an underrated Sokka scene lol! We love a man that defends his first love.
One of the Monkie Kids probably brought up the idea that maybe the Butterfly Maiden joined the dark side. They don't mean it to offend Wukong or Mari/Xiaodie. It was just an innocently insensitive assumption.
I like to think that LMK Wukong has shed much of his feral behaviour and matured over the years during and after the journey, which is why he's a lot more chill nowadays. Had anyone said something like this about Xiaodie to past Wukong, he would have snapped that person like a twig. No hesitation.
Present day Wukong manages to control himself though, but not without snapping a bit. He's been waiting for his bride for over a millennium. He's not just going to casually take that.
Wukong: THE BUTTERFLY MAIDEN IS A GENTLE, LOVING LADY. SHE RULES THE SKY WITH COMPASSION!!! And... celestial goodness!
Monkie Kids: .....
Meanwhile, Wukong forgets that during the journey, Xiaodie was guilty of using explosives and poison on her arrows. Love makes him a little blind.
Alternatively, if it was some rando who wasn't a part of the Monkie Kids:
Wukong: Keep my wife’s name out your fucking mouth!

Other than being known as the monkey king’s wife, was there anything else Mari was known for in history? Was she known as the maiden of blunt honesty? The expressionless maiden? What did young Mari think of the butterfly maiden when she first heard about her?
Yo, nice to see you again!
Truth be told, Mari as Liang Xiaodie wasn't known or dubbed as such for her bluntness or lack of outward emotions. She was just known as "the girl," the Smurfette of the pilgrims. Due to the fact that historians wanted to make her more of a "likeable" and "digestible" heroine, they twisted some parts about her personality and made a persona who can kick ass but is not too rough around the edges. This resulted in Xiaodie having the most inconsistent characterization out of all the characters in the centuries that followed.
There are portrayals of Xiaodie that are shyer and softer, some are energetic and optimistic, the list goes on. Very few interpretations have portrayed her accurately. Can you just imagine Mari and Wukong watching some kind of Journey to the West movie or tv adaptation together, and they laugh about they made Xiaodie overly perky and happy-go-lucky?
Now for question 2: Mari can't really remember a time when she hasn't heard about the Butterfly Maiden because her mother practically reads Journey to the West to her as a bedtime story. I think she'd probably be among the few people who understand that Liang Xiaodie isn't as merry most media portrays her as. The Butterfly Maiden is also partially the reason why she decided to become a master at archery.

I don’t know why but ever since you’ve described Marisol’s personality I keep imagining her doing things captain holt would do in b99. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0zJLltYWtNA&pp=ygUXY2FwdGFpbiBob2x0IGxpdHRsZSBraWQ%3D
youtube
Example 1!-
Wukong: Drumroll please.
Mari: (slow tapping)
Wukong: that’s your drumroll?
Mari: when a tempo isn’t specified, any reasonable person would default to lento.
Example 2!
Mari: Pay no attention to him, Sanzang. He’s very emotional, Sanzang.
Sanzang: why are you saying my first name?
Mari: Well, Sanzang, I remembered reading an article in a medical journal that said one destabilizing aspect of incarceration is the constant dehumanization, Sanzang. You need to be reminded that you are more than just a number, Sanzang. You are Sanzang… Sanzang.
Sanzang: Yep, that fixes imprisonment.
Example 3!
Mari: feel free to consult the script I’ve prepared.
Bajie: okay but it’s a little stilted. “I am feeling trepidation at the prospect of a parentless existence.”? No kid talks like that.
Mari: those lines were lifted, verbatim, from my girlhood diary.
Example 4!
Mari: Does anyone have a few words they would like to say?
Wukong: wup, no one say anything, I want her to say stuff. Speech for wukong (whisper). Speech for wukong, go!
Mari: very well. Your absence was noted.
Wukong: Yes.
Mari: Drinks are on me, there’s a two drink maximum per person.
Wukong: here she goes.
Mari: it is non transferable. Your guests will pay their own tab
Wukong: oh yeah.
Mari: Valet parking is not included.
Wukong: Solid protocol.
Mari: tomorrow’s briefing will be 15 minutes earlier than usual.
Wukong: Wonderful, she’s so bad ass.
Mari: And I’m very proud of you Sun Wukong. We missed you.
Wukong: Aw, you ruined it☺️.
---
No, but this is actually Mari though! I didn't expect that comparison.
She says things in the most deadpan tone, hard to read, speaks formally, terrible at comforting people even though she wants to better at it. The diary and the drumroll bits screams Mari.
I see Mari as a pragmatic type of person. Maybe it makes her a bit emotionally detached and sometimes literal-minded, but she's mature. This is why she wasn't as scared or hurt when Wukong came to beat the shit out of LBD while she was still being used as a vessel. She understands that Wukong has to finish the job or the world is doomed.
Angst aside, this is hilarious. I can just see her, in the most monotonous tone, saying, "I went to Barbados with Wukong for our honeymoon. We wove hats out of palm fronds and swam with the stingrays. I've never been happier." Then she has conversations with her mom like Rosa and Holt do.
Some other things I think she would say:
Mari/Xiaodie holding her 10-foot caterpillar plushie and one of Wukong's baby monkeys: You have disappointed all three of us.
Mari/Xiaodie snapping at Bajie: GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER OR SO HELP ME GOD YOU WON'T LIVE TO SEE THE END OF THE JOURNEY!
Mari/Xiaodie to Sanzang after saving him, monotonous as ever: Ouch. You landed on my ribs. I am in... incredible pain.
