"WHY ARE SWORDS WOMEN!???"
"Calm down, Roronoa. They’re not women, they’re just a feminine word."
Zoro digs the palm of his hands into his eyes, hunching over the big dinner table in this godforsaken mansion on this godforsaken island. How had it come to this? He was supposed to be training to become the world’s greatest swordsman … and here he was. Stuck learning inanimate objects’ stupid imaginary gender and whatever the hell kind of tense “ plus-que-parfait ” (more-than-perfect) is.
Scattered around him are French grammar, spelling and exercise books, loose papers and empty glasses of wine. Sadly, not his own. His stupid dad mentor had decided that he was banned from drinking from his private cellars until daily lessons had ended.
Dracule Mihawk. Hawkeye. Renowned monster powerhouse, the world’s greatest swordsman, a feared warlord…is sat in reading glasses, correcting his pronunciation and teaching him the most vexing language on the planet: French.
“Are you quite finished making a scene? I’ve stopped talking exclusively French to you for many months now. Be grateful.”
Zoro presses his lips together tightly to keep himself from saying something he’ll regret. It wouldn’t do him or his crew any good to lose this opportunity to learn from the best. After the salt-shaker incident, Mihawk, quickly followed by Perona-who only wishes misery upon him- only responded to him if he spoke his broken French to them and would only speak to him in that tongue in return. His already impossibly difficult swords lessons… challenges? Whatever one would call the hellish training regimens the warlord put him through became even more impossible now that he couldn’t even understand the instructions. After a few too many close calls and instances of French being shouted at him louder and louder (saying it louder won’t make him magically understand), Mihawk changed tactics and decided to teach him the academic way instead, in the evenings after supper. Suppers which definitely didn’t leave him longing for someone else’s cooking.
Supposedly surprised at his silence (with this man, there’s no way to really tell for sure what could be going through his mind), Mihawk lowers his glasses and takes a long look at him. “And how is your reading coming along?”
Seated across from him and eating her dessert, Perona gives a loud snort, choking a bit on her strawberry shortcake. Her ever-present floating ghosts laugh a little louder, covering her badly stifled laughter as she purses her lips.
Zoro glares daggers at her, neck and ears flushing intensely. “It’s going… fine .”
In reality, his reading isn’t going “fine”. The Manor’s entire west wing is filled to the brim with the most boring, coma-inducing, self-aggrandising books on philosophy, French cuisine, land management, architecture and theology, all written in chicken scratch, old timey French. Zoro had tried his hand at reading one that seemed perhaps less bad than the others, but on his tenth try at staying awake on reading the third page describing the gothic stone arches of a church- he gave up. It felt more painstaking to spend one more second looking at another page of that book than getting sliced open by Mihawk so many months ago.
In the pits of his désespoir, his guard was down, and his alarm bells didn’t ring when Perona innocently approached him and handed him a book that looked markedly different from the rest of Mihawk’s collection. At a second glance, he realized that he’d seen that book on Sanji’s hammock-side barrel before, recognizing the distinctive lettering of “Harlequin editions” on the spine.
“Here. I’m taking pity on you. Mihawk has a secret stash of these in his personal library. They’re easier to read and will get the job done. You need to meet a quota of one a week, right?”
Out of options, Zoro silently accepted the book and retreated to his quarters. If it was good enough for the cook (and Perona?), it would be good enough for him.
His suspicions should have risen from the moment he recognised it was a work of fiction- unlike every single book he’d come across here. But no , studious mindset activated and with a dictionary on hand for any word he might not know, it took him longer than he’d care to admit to realise this was a romance book. And not just any romance book- a ludicrously explicit book detailing many, many scandalous trysts between a dark, mysterious, broody vampire and his parade of beautiful, lithe and oh-so-flirtatious nobles of all genders. He had to stop and put the book down several times, too flustered from explicit descriptions of passionately taking people against cold stone walls, bending them over various pieces of antique furniture and even tying them to extravagant four poster beds. It was too much for the poor swordsman to handle.
It was mainly the thought of the pervy cook reading this… it stirred something low within him, his thoughts running wild at the natural implication that the scenarios held within the worn pages- the rough, possessive, teasing, kinky and playful sexual acts- were all things that Sanji had read. And enjoyed. Multiple times if his memory served him right. Sanji owned this book, which meant that this was something that… aroused him. Face like a furnace and heart beating wildly, Zoro tugged at his hair, unable to cope with this new information nor the inappropriate thoughts and images his mind was conjuring involving a certain sharp-tongued blonde, his powerful thighs and unfairly biteable neck. He could almost see his fiery blue eye boring adversarially into his own, a cheeky smirk that was just begging to be kissed off-
Zoro snapped the book shut.
Fuck .
After an uncomfortably sweaty night and a glacial shower, it was only at breakfast that further implications finally clicked for the rattled swordsman. The lewd book had come, as Perona had put it, from Mihawk’s secret stash .
One: the book was Mihawk’s. That dawning realisation alone froze Zoro mid-chew, and he decided then and there that he would never be able to look the older man in the eye ever again. At least not in the same way.
I know what you are
It wasn’t difficult to make the connection between the book’s owner, a pale, recluse, wine drinking man in a manor and the book’s main vampire. Two: this was from a stash . Meaning there would be many, many more of these books in the manor. Three, because of the nature of his mentor’s “official” library (unreadable), he will de facto have to keep reading bodice-rippers for well over a year and inevitably assimilate the raunchiest, most useless lexicon known to man, in what some people call the language of love. Wonderful. Despite himself, Zoro knew he’d already memorized at least three different ways to refer to male genitalia, and that was just from reading one of those little fuckers.
Weeks, months pass, and boy had Zoro been right. And annoyingly, so had Mihawk, on how reading would drastically improve his French. (If Robin could see him now…) The smutty books came and went, courtesy of Perona, and his reliance on his dictionary diminished. As the books’ premises plunged deeper and deeper into unspeakable domains, Zoro made the firm decision to stop asking questions. For the sake of his sanity. He never again wanted Perona to share her thoughts on the "thematic beauty of the monster fucker genre". He would never fully recover from the hour-long exposé she made him on ABO dynamics. Nor could he ever recover from the knowledge that all these novels came from Dracule Mihawk’s private library .
He now knew way too much about Mihawk's kinks and sexual tastes in men, and he wished to believe in a god so he could pray to never have to address this with the man within his life. Ever.
Which is why he's currently sweating bullets at Mihawk's inquiry into his latest reads, and why Perona is looking at him like the cat that ate the canary.
Eyes darting between his two guests, the warlord's lips tug at their corners in something resembling a smile.
"I take it you haven't found the sword fighting books yet then?"
The what.
Zoro promptly chokes on his saliva, coughing aggressively into his fist, his remaining eye bulging in surprise.
"Yes, did Perona not tell you? All the baking books in the French cuisine section actually hold sword forms and techniques. My boy, what have you been reading?"

Sanji had maybe had just a few too many drinks tonight. His face feels warm, his limbs are nice and relaxed- if still a bit sore from the battle- and his tongue is a little loose. He knows it's one too many when it takes him a couple of sentences to realise he and Robin are speaking French together, and he's grateful for the unconscious switch when he faintly registers that Zoro is sat not very far, by himself, just across the campfire.
That was a close one.
Robin prods him for more information on his one-night stands, and who is he to deny a lady, really? He feels the words spill from his mouth like boiling water overflowing from a pot. He hears his voice confess a truth he's not let himself face for years and blames the wine.
"En vrai ce n'est pas qu'ils ne sont pas satisfaisants... c'est qu'ils ne sont jamais...assez. "
The cook swims in half-forgotten memories of one night stands he sought out on lonely evenings at random ports. Of fumbling hands and desperate kisses, of leaving before the sun has even risen, of cold sheets and empty beds in the morning... Sanji doesn't like the bitter taste his admittance leaves in his mouth, nor the way his chest feels just a little tighter. He knows what his love-starved self really wants, what he craves most of all... is the stupidly perfect man sitting across the fire. Like a moth to a flame, he yearns to know what it would feel like. To matter . To be seen in all his flawed, weak existence, and not be thrown aside like the mistake he is. To be loved , cared for, cherished tenderly by someone as earnest and devoted as he knows the swordsman to be. It's with a bleeding heart that he finally voices his love, answering Robin on what would be enough.
"Lui. "
His finger taps the ash off his cigarette before taking another long, long drag. Forlorn, he tears his gaze away from Zoro and nearly startles at the sincere warmth he sees dancing in the archeologist's eyes.
"Tu devrais lui dire ."
(You should tell him.)
Sanji laughs at that. "Mais bien sûr. J'vais me lever, me planter devant lui et tout lui avouer. "
(But of course. I'll get up, walk right up to him and confess everything.)
A beat. Robin impassively stares back at him. Sanji knows being a devil fruit eater isn't the only similarity between her and their captain. Their stubbornness is something he knows not to underestimate. He sighs and gulps the rest of his drink down. He must be out of his goddamn mind. And maybe a little drunker than he thought he was.
"Je ne sais pas te dire non, ma chère Robin." She smiles. "Mais saches que tu n'as pas précisé dans quelle langue je devais lui parler. "
(I don't know how to say no to you, my dear Robin. But please note that you didn't specify the language I should speak to him in.)
Before she can charm him into switching to a language the Marimo understands, the cook is already skirting around the fire with slightly wobbly steps. If he can just keep his tone right, tinged with a bit of anger, then he can probably pull this off, he thinks.
“You.” He points at Zoro accusingly.
The mosshead turns to face him, an unreadable expression on his face. “Me?”
Sanji doesn’t linger on it, all his mental capacity concentrating on making sure he uses French at the right moments.
“Yes, you fucking ange tombé du ciel , I have some words for you. Some mots doux if you will, so just sit tight and listen. You owe me after I saved your ass earlier.”
(Angel fallen from heaven; sweet words)
Surprised that Zoro doesn’t contradict him on the “saving his ass” part, he doesn’t stop to think and squashes the little voice inside him that questions why he’s going through with this.
Sanji fully planned on a heartfelt rant about all the idiot swordsman’s qualities- how unfair it is that he has it all. He really did. but he also feels a sudden shyness overtake him now that he’s standing in front of the idiot in question. To look Zoro in the eyes while saying such embarrassing, emotional shit won't do, and Sanji’s eyes make the mistake of looking down- only to be met with the tantalising sight of a broad, scarred chest and crossed arms that do nothing to hide the strong, corded muscle underneath. Oh, f uck me. His fake annoyance becomes partially real.
"Enfoiré! comment jsuis supposé te résister, hein? " He indignantly waves his cigarette around.
(You bastard! How am I supposed to resist you, huh?)
"Non mais vraiment- est ce que t’as la moindre idée de l’effet que t’as quand tu te balades torse nu sur le pont, tout dégoulinant de sueur? Ou de l’effet que les bruits que tu fait durant tes entraînements ont sur moi? J’ai qu’à fermer mes yeux et c’est- je…” he can feel his ears burning. Fuck it. Why not let it all out, he’ll feel better afterwards.
( No, but really- do you have any idea of the effect you have when you walk shirtless on deck, dripping with sweat? Or how the noises you make during your workouts affect me? All I have to do is close my eyes and it's- I...)
“Tu me rends fou. Après nos combats c’est si facile d’imaginer tes mains calleuses m’aggrippant possessivement, ta peau salée sur ma langue, ton torse haletant d’effort, ton regard enflammé -”
( You drive me crazy. After our fights it's so easy to imagine your calloused hands gripping me possessively, your salty skin on my tongue, your torso panting with effort, your fiery gaze -)
Still sat in front of Sanji, Zoro’s face is turning red and he’s shooting Sanji a heated look, no doubt irritated about being ranted at in French. Tough shit. Sanji wasn’t done.
“T’es si favorisé par les dieux, je suis même sûr que ta bite est énorme. Et puis si tu savais ce que je te laisserais me faire- ” he rolls his eyes and snorts, hoping the exasperation part of his rant is convincingly coming through.
(You're so favoured by the gods, I'm pretty sure you even have a huge dick. And if you knew what I'd let you do to me-)
Zoro’s mouth parts in shock, and a small anxious thought crosses Sanji’s mind- but there’s absolutely no way in hell the shitty mosshead knows French. He would sooner know his left from his right.
“Dis moi.” (Tell me.)
“Tell you what, stupid marimo-” it takes a couple of seconds for the cook to comprehend what just happened, and a strangled noise crawls its way out of his throat. Everything comes to a halt, his world crumbles down. Oh no. Oh no .
Zoro rises to his feet and steps into his space, a dangerously sinful grin across his face. At this point Sanji’s brain has fully stopped working, and it’s all he can do to gape stupidly back at him, face redder than it’s ever been.
“Dis moi. ” he repeats, voice low and so foreign sounding as it tries to replicate the right intonation of Sanji’s mother tongue. “Ou si tu préfères je peux te dire ce que je voudrais bien te faire, moi.”
( Tell me. Or if you prefer, I can tell you what I'd like to do to you.)
Warm blood bursts forth from Sanji’s nose, and his world turns black.

i know some of you have been pressing your faces to the glass waiting for me to see this one in particular SO i saw "the nurses" the other night and am still thinking about it!!
i love love love it when characters get pushed to a point where you can almost see their childhood selves pop out, like are they even talking about what's happening right now? or are their 12-year-old hearts just screaming?? i love that margaret's outburst is both irrational (the hostile work environment is coming from inside the house; i was yelling at my tv "baby it's your fault!!!") and so so honest.
[this turned into a bit of a character thesis, so not only is there a readmore, there will also be a reblog soon with the rest of the post because i maxed out the image limit] [edit: part ii now in the reblogs!]
this whole time, margaret has treated her subordinates with a heavy hand because she thinks it's the right and fair thing to do. the rules say this is how it works!
she maintains a high standard of excellence in brutal circumstances, but she's also reactive, moody, and unforgiving. she's often shown on the edge of losing control and authority, she inflames situations by overreacting, and the thing she punishes most egregiously is disrespect (toward frank, toward the army, toward herself). she intentionally underlines the distance between herself and the other nurses at every turn.

really, everything she thinks and does comes from a place of "they're not supposed to like me," but the childish part of her that is completely unable to see her own behavior is confused and hurt because "i'm just doing my job so why don’t they like me???"
it's her job to maintain discipline, but especially here in 4077-land, she doesn't have to lead with the whip. henry was beloved because he was an overly permissive clown, which will never be her speed, but colonel potter has all the same training as she does. he's loved and respected as the Good Regular Army Guy because he leads with discernment and mutual respect.
it's easier for him. he's more experienced, he's respected and supported from above and below, and he has a calm temperament — which isn't nothing.
from season 4 "the interview":
whether she's aware of this as a problem or not, we at home can see how margaret's inability to control her emotional reactivity causes her as much grief as her inability to control other people.
if she were capable of laughing off small slights, hawkeye and trapper wouldn't have used her as a chew toy so much, and henry might have taken her real concerns more seriously if they weren't lost in the noise of daily fits, you know? she rarely started it, so i'm not blaming her for the hostile chaos circus of seasons 1-3, but i am saying she would have had a better time if she knew how to take a few deep breaths.
this description from the script, after the near-brawl in the nurses' tent in act one, is basically her character thesis statement:
and here, when she's reacting fully emotionally, the truth comes out! the reason that she won't be flexible and show compassion to the nurses isn't because of the rules, but because they're mean to her!!
that's obviously a very bad place to lead from. she has enormous institutional power over them, including controlling their freedom of movement, but she feels like all the other girls in school are hanging out together and they hate her. because they are! and they do! the fight in act one boils over when they make fun of her hair, and that sent all of them back to middle school.
and in many ways, that's where margaret's emotional maturity is stuck (which is, i think, why i find her so endearing). she can't see herself. she knows they don't like her, trust her, or want her around, but she doesn't understand how she dug this hole herself, or how to get out of it.
to add insult to jealous injury, one of the nurses (mary jo, who gets between margaret and baker to stop the fight and takes care of the others in different ways) is margaret's age, and the others look to her as their chosen leader and personal support.
and i'm sure margaret had NO IDEA this was the messy truth until she heard it come out of her mouth.
and her emotionally breaking on the "one lousy cup of coffee" in particular…
i wonder, how often does some version of that first tent scene happen? does she deliver their assignments every night? she walks in already defensive, they immediately stop laughing, and then... she either finds a reason to scold them or they ice her out until she leaves. (and they probably start laughing again as soon as she does!)
from her perspective, when she arrived for the dreaded sleepover and they turned out the lights the minute she walked in, it's like they cancelled the nightly coffee klatch just to avoid spending one social minute with her.
i also think the nurses are right when they assumed that she wouldn't have accepted an invitation to hang out with them (and might even have snapped at them for being inappropriate for asking). she doesn't cross that emotional line, even when she should — she didn't know gaynor was spiraling after losing so many patients in a row, and didn't respond compassionately when she learned.
has she ever invited them for coffee or a friendly chat? no.
...... but her circumstances have recently changed.

I actually did come up with a URL for Hawkeye once, but I was just editing a URL in a screencap to fit him better. A lot of people have tumblr URLs that have nothing to do with their lives, jobs, or interests (hi) but that's really hard to do with fictional characters so here are some ideas.
Hawkeye: currently hes-gomorrah
Clinically insane posting, no one can get over the fact that he's a successful surgeon in real life. Changes his URL, bio, and icon to resemble a pornbot and catfishes Frank like once a month. Frank falls for it literally every time.
Trapper: currently im-gomorrah
Barely posts, mostly made an account to follow Hawkeye and do matching URLs with him. They've changed up the theme a few times. He's the least online and therefore the most free.
Margaret: thats-major-to-you
Posts about military history and women's history, especially where they overlap, and sometimes about nursing.

Sends Henry and Potter anonymous callouts of Hawkeye, Trapper, Klinger, and BJ literally every day.

Fullmetal Alchemist Chapter 94
We see what Mustang's crew is doing. They're acting as the PR team while Briggs goes on the offense.
It seems like the fighting is in a fairly small part of the city since people don't know anything going on.
It's also pretty strange that no one in the general public is aware of King Bradley's disappearance or the attempted assassination. If there wasn't an attack on the capital and it wasn't specifically the Promised Day, maybe someone in Central would take temporary control and then make the announcement.
Since Graman is leading the recovery operation, maybe he put the gag order so Roy's team could take advantage of the public's confusion.
Breda also said the train bombing happened "a few hours ago". I've mentioned a few instances that show that characters have a very vague sense of the past. A few hours might mean earlier today or it might mean yesterday afternoon as far as I can tell.
But with Roy's team playing the part of the loyal allies of the beloved Fuhrer, they're managing to rally the public to their side. It could also pave the way for Eastern and Northern reinforcements if Graman were to march on Central. Graman could just say that he's rallying to Roy's cause and even reveal that he'd found the train wreckage.
And Maria Ross ties their whole PR machination with a pretty bow by claiming their cause is just.
If I could edit this chapter, I'd put the tank scene first and then have the radio station scene. Maria Ross said their cause was "for the sake of justice" and it would hit even harder if we then transitioned to Roy who is acting for the sake of vengeance instead.
It seems Envy can't maintain any shapeshifter appearance when seriously injured. When Roy burned Envy's face, it started changing back to its default human form. And I double checked chapter 38 and Envy immediately changed back from a dog when Lanfan impaled it with a kunai.
Envy has been previously defeated in its monster form. But it didn't lose in a way that implies Envy is not a threat anymore. So when Envy transforms again, we might be feeling a bit of dread and excitement. But only for a moment.
This really is the most appropriate way for Envy to truly lose a fight. Envy has been the most persistent antagonist in the whole series. It has mocked and manipulated the protagonists; it has reveled in its cruelty to others; it caused the Ishbal Civil War which was the source of many of the characters' traumas. And every time it was faced, Envy was a deadly enemy who no one could truly defeat.
And now Envy is facing an enemy it is helpless against. And anything it tries to do just makes Roy even angrier and make him prolong its suffering more.
Envy can't mock, manipulate, murder its way out of this.
And the best part is we the audience are enjoying the catharsis about it. Envy is cruelly mocked, all its tricks fail completely, and it spends the chapter running in fear while being hunted. And we might not realize how Roy is sliding off the path he set for himself. And Roy isn't aware of it either.
There is an alternate universe where Roy still had this fight and there would be no concerns about his mental state. And that universe was destroyed when he declared that he'd make Envy suffer through the whole ordeal.
When Roy fought Lust, he opted to burn her and continue to burn her until she stayed dead. No waiting for her to regenerate. Just continuous explosions. But with Envy, he's opting to make every burn as painful as possible. Melt Envy's eyes, blow Envy up, wait for Envy to recover, repeat.
And this chapter really shows how utterly petty Envy can be. It couldn't trick Roy by disguising itself as Hughes, so it tried to guilt him over attacking Hughes. It couldn't beat Roy, so it targeted Hawkeye in order to hurt him. And it yelled defiance at Roy even as he prepared to finish it off.
And let's talk briefly about Hawkeye's pre-skirmish with Envy. Since Envy-as-Roy is the first one we see, and Hawkeye is the one hidden in shadow, it's understandable that we'd think Hawkeye is actually Envy. Although the first hint to the contrary should be that Roy stopped doing the eye thing when he met Hawkeye.
And Envy apparently does not ship Royai.
That scene also sets up a nice parallel with what happens next. We were set up to think that we were seeing Envy about to attack Roy and it turns out to be the very opposite scenario. But then Hawkeye really does point a gun at Roy.
In both cases, she's aiming her gun at a monster.
How many guns does Hawkeye have on her? She pulled out 4 different handguns over the course of this chapter.
And here's a potential explanation to Ed's long-range Alchemy. He's not actually performing the same thing May does. He's manipulating the ground along the way to its intended destination.

Fic Writer 2023 Review
I got this from @jaelijn, who generously tagged me - 30 questions about my fic writing through this year.
I hope for a better 2024 for all of us.
What’s something new that you tried in a fic this year? How did it turn out and would you do it again?
I wrote the first three chapters - well, I can hardly say "wrote" - of a fandom fusion - Blake's 7 scripts with MAS*H characters replacing them. To find them funny - even to know what's going on - you would have to be simultaneously a B7 fan and a MASH fan. Judging by the response on AO3, I would say there are about four such. Maybe less. I probably won't finish it - though anything's possible - and I doubt very much if I'll do anything like that again. The problem was that it was not very creative, but even so, it took up a fair amongt of time.
2. How many fics did you work on this year? (They don’t have to be finished or published!)
I wrote about 211,000 words of All We Know - pretty steadily through the year. I was writing the September 1962 section last January, and I'm writing the April 1963 section now. I'm publishing chronologically, so the section I'm working on now will be posted in April 2024 - after being proofread, edited, beta-read, edited, and so on.
I also completed three MASH stories - Crabapple Cove, Major Heart, Under the Apple Tree, and one Star Trek story, Kirk and Spock's First Kiss. M*A*S*H works in progress include Rosary, Nurse Doctor, MirrorMASH, and another strange crossover, Buffy the Vampire Slayer And Her Gay Foster Dads.
And there's Gray-Eyes, which is something else again.
3. What’s something you learned about yourself as a writer?
All We Know is easily the longest story I've ever written. I found that I can hold a story that length inside of my head and my heart, and keep writing it - and be confident I'll finish it. I found, too, that I do a lot of my writing inside my head before I sit down and stare at the screen. This last I always knew, I suppose, but now I really know it.
4. What piece of media inspired you the most?
Well, M*A*S*H, of course. Some lovely soul managed to upload All The MASH Episodes to the Internet Archive in such a way that they went unnoticed for over a year. (They are now gone- helpful people on the very public Mash subreddit started posting links to them, and whaddya know, once declared publicly, they're gone.)
I also watched some few episodes of E.R., most of the first episode of AfterMASH, a couple of episodes of Trapper John M.D., a specific episode of Sports Night, and I read Herman Wouk's Marjorie Morningstar and Kathy Hulme's The Nun's Story, among other relevant material.
5. What fandom(s) did you write for this year?
M*A*S*H. Star Trek. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Blake's 7, a little.
6. What ship(s) captured your heart?
Hawkeye/Mulcahy. Over, and over, and over again. Also, because they're so very sweet together, Sam Pak/Sidney Freedman.
7. What character(s) captured your heart?
Well, besides Francis Mulcahy and Hawkeye Pierce, 2023 was the year I got to like Trapper very much indeed, as I wrote him in October and in December. I saw a very old fanvid, Trapper Never Got To Say Goodbye, and watched a bunch of good Trapper episodes, and - I just got to like him. I also invented/discovered in my heart several newly adorable people: Sam Colquhoun and his daughter Barbara, Martine LeClerc, Pauline Morley and her partner Thea Schwartz and their friend Nadine Royer, Loretta Bradford, Doctor Jerome White and Doctor Aaron Elharar, Sarah Pargeter Pierce and her 12-year-old daughter Mary, Sister Maria Angelica and Sister Raymond, and of course Cathryn Jamieson.
8. Did you write for a new fandom or ship this year?
No. Well, yes: I gave Margaret Houlihan the best possible husband I could imagine for her. I like Sam Colquhoun.
9. What fic meant the most to you to write?
At the time? Gray-Eyes. Ongoing through the whole year: All We Know.
10. What fic made you feel the happiest to work on?
Crabapple Cove. I got the idea and wrote it and giggled most of my way through writing it.
11. What fic was the most satisfying to finish writing?
Well, besides Gray-Eyes, I only finished four stories this year, plus some bits of tumblrfic: Crabapple Cove, Major Heart, Under the Apple Tree, and Kirk and Spock's First Kiss. They were all very satisfying to finish.
12. What fic was the most difficult to write? Did you finish it?
MirrorMASH. I have got to a point in that story where I know how it ends, and yet I am really struggling to write that ending - because when it's done, I shall never write MirrorHawkeye again.
But there was an idea for a story I thought of - "AfterMASH, only like the Golden Girls, Max and Charles and Francis sharing a house…" - and Honoria of course - and I wrote the opener for it, and then realised that I didn't see a way to write any more of it. I could see it in my mind's eye as an endlessly enjoyable TV series - but to write another word of it felt like climbing up the Cliffs of Insanity with Fezzik on my back and Inigo on his shoulders. It was like contemplating a land war in Asia. I just gave up.
13. What fic was the easiest to write?
Kirk and Spock's First Kiss. I wrote it at a writer's workshop at an online K/S con, and the story just unpacked itself into dialogue.
14. What were your shortest and longest fics this year?
Kirk and Spock's First Kiss is the shortest - a perfect drabble of 100 words. All We Know is the longest - 261,000 words in the current document, 143,314 words published on AO3.
15. Rec a fic you wrote or posted in 2023
I'm very pleased with M*A*S*H goes to Pride - thinking through what each of our surviving friends from MASH 4077th would do at the world's first Pride March in New York City in 1970, and whether I think they are LGBT or ally or neither.
16. What were you go-to writing songs?
I was writing the first draft of Christmas in Maine (just posted on Christmas Day) in the middle of a really, really hot August (for Scotland), and I played a list of Christmas carols over and over. I was then writing a chapter from Sister Maria Angelica's point of view and I made a playlist of Christian religious music. Otherwise, usually Leonard Cohen, Janis Ian, Willie Nelson, Tracy Chapman, Johnny Cash, k. d. lang, and so on.
17. What were your go-to writing snacks?
Cashew nuts.
18. What was the hardest fic to title?
Well - All We Know. I'd been calling it "Virtues and Sins" til May, til I realised that if I was going to post the opening chapter in two months time, I really, really had to think of a proper title.
19. Share your favorite opening line
""What do you pray for?" Hawkeye asks: not every time, but often. And when he doesn't ask, he looks: he stares at Mulcahy's rosary sometimes as if he hated it."
20. Share your favorite ending line
"First and foremost: Francis J. P. Mulcahy, formerly chaplain 4077th MASH: without you, this book would not have been written, and without you, I would not have been here to tell it."
21. Share your favorite piece of dialogue
"Doctor Pierce - debauched him?"
"It does seem unlikely, doesn't it?" Charles said. "But then whatever else Pierce lacked, it was not persistence or audacity. Good God, did he know the Irishman could write like this? How?"
22. Share an excerpt from your favorite scene
After a moment, Mulcahy laughed. He sounded more tired than amused. "All right," he said. "Should I move this chair?" He got up. Hawkeye caught him by the arm as he was about the pick up his own chair.
"Let me." he said. "I know just where it has to be." He moved the chair around, where the light from the central lamp would be falling at the right angle on Mulcahy's head, and waved Mulcahy to sit down again.
All Hawkeye had time for, that morning, was to check that there was no indication of a concussion, and no broken bones. He meant to give Mulcahy a haircut, but he wanted to check his scalp for cuts or bruises.
"And what can I do for you, sir? Pompadour, bouffant, some stylish Victory rolls?" Hawkeye was gently combing Mulcahy's hair out with his fingers. "Perhaps a little scalp massage?"
23. Share the final version of a sentence or paragraph you struggled with. What about it was challenging? Are you happy with how it turned out?
Winchester folded his hands in front of him. He looked calmer. He also looked pompous, and embarrassed. "It appears I owe you an apology."
"Thank you," Mulcahy said, after a moment's effort. "I didn't intend to say anything to upset you. I'm sorry. Is Hawkeye all right?"
It may not look very difficult, but the whole passage of Charles Emerson Winchester and Francis Mulcahy talking in Charles's study in December (in All We Know) was hugely difficult and very painful to rewrite and rewrite and rewrite. I was so hugely on Francis's side that I was having difficulty seeing Charles's side. I am very happy with how it eventually turned out. Jakrar is a wonderful person to work through a story with.
24. What’s something that surprised you while you were working on a fic? Did it change the story?
While writing the final September section of All We Know, back in February, I realised something about Charles Emerson Winchester's son, Charles Emerson Winchester Jr, that I genuinely had not realised previously, and while it didn't change the story much, it did affect it. (Our Charles's father and grandfather are dead at the time All We Know opens, so CEW III has lost his ordinal number and his son CEW is Junior.)
25. What did you use to write? (e.g. writing programs, paper & pen, etc.)
I use LibreOffice on a Windows 10 desktop. I can and do write on my laptop if I have to, but my favourite place to write is at my desk in the little room with the window that looks out only on the sky, facing the wall. I take notes on Notepad.
26. If you had to choose one, what was THE most satisfying writing moment of your year?
"Please don't worry," Mulcahy said. "We can find our own way out."

27. Did you do anything special to celebrate finishing a fic?
No.
28. How did you recharge between fics?
What is this "between fics" you speak of?
29. If this were an awards show, who would you thank?
I would thank my demonic proofreader Jakrar, who is enabling me to keep writing this story in the best demonic style, Ajay, who has been my closest fannish friend for getting on for forty years, and @rescue-ram whose fabulous pro-Trapper comments (and fic) make me very, very happy. Also, for ideas presented to me in 2022 and 2023 that I stole without conscience and used ruthlessly in my own words in 2023: FaustianSlip for Not A Second Time, @allcanonisrelative for Every time, I think of you, @yeats-infection for What the Thunder Said, and also Crystalrose and @topshelf2112-blog for their very different but quite illuminating takes on Charles Emerson Winchester in particular and his relationship with Hawkeye Pierce, which was not something I'd thought much about before I started planning All We Know.
30. What’s something that you want to write in 2024?
I want to finish All We Know and Rosary and Nurse Doctor and MirrorMASH and I would quite like to write a few more episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's gay foster dads. And I look forward to getting more ideas for something new.

i love it when people treat her as the elrics adopted mother! i think there's a reason why she lost a child specifically and why they lost their mother, and while the rituals they did to bring those people back didn't work, they still found their ways to each other. love it when people INCLUDE HER also!! so many times in fanon stuff she just gets left out completely and it makes me sad.
hate it when people call her abusive? like. the manga makes it really clear that she's doing all of their training with as much care and caution as you CAN do a martial art, and that her assistant was watching out for them while they were on the island (and kicking their ass but you know. he knew they were safe). she's a good mom and she's a good teacher and i won't hear it.

olivier as a character is like wildly deeply nuanced and layered and i really love fanon posts that engage with her on the level of that complexity! she IS that complicated.
one of my biggest olivier "she would not fucking do thats" is almost any non-izumi ship, and it's not like. it's not like.. BECAUSE of izumi. i polyship all the time. it's just. she would not fucking do that. roy mustang she hates, her assistants are also men, riza is her friend and very specifically in the same cateogry of friend to her as jean havoc... so...? so probably that yeah. i just can't get into any of them. i have tried.

i think my biggest and worst crime against traditional fma fandom is that i believe riza hawkeye is aromantic. so like. it makes me feel "she would not fucking do that" about so much royai content all of the time. and i still love queerplatonic royai so much so i reblog it a lot with my qp glasses on but the super romanticy stuff i- oh. OH. even worse than that is royai parent stuff. either as the elrics parent figures (they r coworkers at worst and weird uncle/aunt at best) or as having their own kids. augh

CPN : MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL CANDIES 🥮🍭
The celebration will not be complete without sweets only for turtles. It’s a busy fandom day!

Let’s do a run down of all the cpn, speculation, clownery, interpretation whatever you wanna call it : ( this is for bxgs/turtles only and our galaxy brain. If you’re not one and still come here and read, get upset or what it’s not my problem. you did it to yourself)
1. The composition of their mid-autumn festival photos, which were both posted in their own weibo accounts. GG’s seem like the plate acts like the moon and the mooncake is against it. Similar to what Bobo’s is — him against the moon. I just love the subtlety of how different these may seem but they’re really not.
2. The flower used appears to be a camelia. The same one as what’s on Yibo’s suit. We know Hibiscus is GG’s thing and we saw Yibo adapt that. This camelia is because of his partnership with Chanel. So I would like to think GG made an effort to match that since Bobo will appear @ CCTV 🤍
3. They are both in Beijing! I hope they get to spend time together and with their loved ones 🤍
4. The song Yibo performed ( duet ) is called The moments of you in my life. It really suits his voice if you wanna listen to the original.

This is performed in CCTV, so of course the songs are pre selected. I don’t think Bobo picked it himself or what— he was gonna sing what the production will assign to him. However that does not take away the really good lines that make me CPN from this song.

5. Another round of editing similarities between YBO and XZS. I mean. How many more evidence do we really need huh? It’s either they hired the same third party to edit their videos or they share employees. It’s okay. All the money goes to the same household. Another one of those things that only turtles will notice.
6. In the XZS vlog released, there is a cut where GG is surfing and in the water. People are saying it’s the same place where Summer Surf Shop was shot. One BXG who went there more or less confirmed it cause there was a shot where GG was taking photos/videos of the island where the resort is. granted it is a popular place maybe that’s why he went— but remembering how WYB ( allegedly ) made that heart in the water for him. Awwww. I wish they got to spend a summer like this together 🤍 vacations where no one will bother them / no one knows who they are and do what they like.
7. Another coincidence? The first shot of the vlog is GG biking pass an old red telephone booth. My mind instantly went to a similar looking one during their CQL shoot — it’s in the same path he runs in the morning with Yibo. 🥺🥺🥺 I’m thinking how particular XZ is and his team in what they show in the vlog, so capturing that ( to me ) probably means more.

9. GG is also wearing his airpods in part of this boyfriend shot which is surely a leftover. Lol. But i’m thankful, I know wang laoshi got the better version of it and even with messages from GG. There is a CPN that when he wears his airpods at certain parts of the vlog, he may be talking to WYB and showing him where he is or just talking to him.

and finally, I cannot NOT talk about the 🦴 necklace and the engraving !!!!
I have to hand it to turtle’s sharp eyes for noticing it— i think most of us inherited bobo’s hengdian hawkeye tendencies! This was picked up first due to the photos shared by SDC weibo. No one has seen this before. Maybe because we don’t have a clear picture but I looked at the ones from YBO before and it’s not there. ⬇️⬇️⬇️
So it could be:
1. He is not showing the side of the necklace with the engraving. It’s only now that he did.
2. This was engraved recently.
3. We are all hallucinating — there is no engraving. Which I think is most likely because people are brightening the photos, some are seeing it and some are not. Also the pendant is diamond encrusted. I don’t think you can engrave on that either. Even thinking about damaging that or removing some if it seems like a no-no.
The character in the engraving means King. 👑
I’m 50-50 on this for now. I would love for it to show a more personalized/custom side to it — as if puppy reference isn’t enough right. the use of characters also reminds us of GG. Yibo is confident but i don’t think he will engrave the word KING for himself. Maybe GG suggested it, as a reference to his movie King of the Sky ( i still prefer this title than born to fly okay ) . Oh well. Just some clownery. Remember in this fandom there are things we scream about and later on, rational thoughts take over and we become more calm. That’s what I like about this fandom tbh, we are open to reason and try and look at things with a rational mind 🤍

Twenty Books Challenge
Hypothetically, you are only able to keep 20 of your books. Only one book per author/series. So what books are you keeping? Credit due to @the-forest-library (I have been thinking about this list for like a week straight)
Guardians of the West by David and Leigh Eddings - any of the Belgariad/Mallorean series frankly. I read these series I don't know how many times as teen. Yes, they are a problematic. Yes they are trope-y as hell but I love them.
Memory by Lois McMaster Bujold - inching just barely above Miles in Love or Mountains of Mourning.
Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison - This is a book that always makes me cry.
Whale Talk by Chris Cutcher - A swim team comprised of various kids with disabilities and are deeply flawed but are also attempting to do good things? I wish this was on every book list for teens.
All Systems Red (Murderbot Diaries) by Martha Wells - I mean all murderbot series is great. Funny story, I told my mom to read this book eons ago and she only read it after a librarian recommended it.
Return of the King by JRR Tolkien - though technically LotR is one book and I don't have single copies of this anymore. But the scouring of the shire just hits me in different places when I read it.
A Child's Anthology of Poetry edited by Elizabeth Hauge Sword and Victoria Flournoy McCarthy - My textbook of poetry when I was young.
Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr - Another a book that makes me absolutely sob.
The Realms of the Gods by Tamora Pierce - I love the Wild Magic Series the most of all Pierce's series. And yes, I recognize the problematic relationship. But also, talking badger.
Sabriel by Garth Nix - I'm sorry the far superior goth necromancer with bells.
First Truth by Dawn Cook - If had I pick one of the truth series. I have an unnatural fondness of a book series that combines magic with Punnett Squares.
Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Narrowly above Midsummer Night's Dream. But the tomorrow speech is an absolute banger.
All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot - Any of the Herriot books. I read these almost to pieces.
Double Whammy by Carl Hiassen - It was this or Squeeze Me. But Skink really deserves to saved.
House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski - Post Modern Horror.
Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein - More Poetry of my childhood.
Dark Tales by Shirley Jackson - specifically The Possibility of Evil.
Daredevil vol 6 by Mark Waid, Chris Samnee - Graphic Novels count and I will fight you. This has one of the first individual issues I picked up.
Sandman vol. 8: World's End by Neil Gaiman, Micha Allred - Sandman holds a near and dear place in my heart. It was a close call between this and American Gods or Preludes and Nocturnes. But I will have echoes of Crements in my head.
Hawkeye vol. 4: Rio Bravo by Matt Fraction, David Aja - Pizza Dog! Also any of the volumes are fantastic and visually gorgeous.
I did take the prompt literally, but here are five more books I either always buy on kindle/can only get as an ebook. I would pay an extraordinary amount of money for these in print.
Toad Words and other stories by T Kingfisher - I was following her when she was still writing fantasy!
I Reap You Not by Catelyn Winona - Second Person done right.
True Porn Clerk Stories by Ali Davis - This causes me to giggle, rage, and cry.
The Heiress Effect by Courtney Milan - Brothers Sinister series is the standard I compare all Regency Novels to.
Night Shift by Stephen King - Specifically Quitter's Inc. But frankly any collection of Stephen King is gold.

OHHH never brave enough to TRY... Nothing coming immediately to mind (besides maybe wanting to get better at writing sex lmao) but if pressed? I do love doing sort of weird AUs and have been slowly quietly only 1% seriously kicking around the idea of a Solaris AU take on MASH. Love the book, going to see the film for the first time Thursday, so we’ll see if that actually kicks something off for me?? Anyway I think it would be really fucking good. And weird. I think it’d be fun to play with that theme of hitting the edge of what it is possible for humans to understand, and staring down the absolutely alien / non-negotiably and permanently inexplicable. I want to put Hawkeye in a ship by himself and have the sentient ocean gently tune into his brainwaves and reproduce in its infinitely changing depths a scene of such horrific uncanniness it is nearly unbearable to observe and makes him temporarily insane. And then BJ of course is the one haunted by the imperfect (and unkillable and superhumanly strong) alien reproduction of his family. Etc. Lots here to have fun with. But Good God The Work Involved. Anyway. That or I’d love to try my hand at a Mad Men fic playing with the beloved Peggy/Stan/Ginsberg dynamic in some formation. HOORAY!
12. Will you change anything about the way you edit or rewrite this year?
Maybe???? I tried a few different things in my approach to All Octobers that I thought paid off. Or at least I still kind of like it even though it’s a few months old now, so that feels like a good sign?? Most of the changes took place in the writing stage, but I tried to be more mercenary with my editing, stricter especially with non-unique or already-extant similes, metaphors, etc., and willing to Gloss / Summarize. It’s The Year of Montage, Baby!!!!!! <- guy high off his ass on and irreparably damaged by hundreds of pages of film theory per week (if that didn’t already come thru in the . Endless meditation on the real / the sign / the image / the lens in All Octobers. Sorry LMAO).
13. Aside from fanfic, are there any other fan works you’d like to try creating? Fanart, or fanvids, gifsets, or podfic?
YES! Fanart for sure!! I want to get back into drawing regularly if possible. Also if I can draw BJ and Hawk I can then start trying to do sort of — illustrated things (always thinking about Guide to Looking at Explosions for something I wish I had the skillset for, for example!!). Also I thought podficcing was fun to try and I may give it a shot again sometime, but also it’s a lot of work and a huge time suck for something not many people enjoy and which I also don’t get much out of after the literal act of recording it (love reading aloud!! but listening to my own voice… 😧)

61,038. It's not much, but I have a novel-sized fic in the works so I expect it to balloon in size, hopefully soon haha

Trials of Mana/Seiken Densetsu 3, mainly Hawkeye x Riesz
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Final Vows - A short retelling of the final battle of the game where Hawkeye and Riesz confess to each other in the midst of battle. I decided to raise the stakes and make the scene more dramatic, because it's something I felt was lacking in the original game.
Matched - A jealous Hawkeye watching Duran and Riesz spar. Jealous Hawkeye good! Jealous Hawkeye delicious! Also with some angst, hurt, comfort and fluff at the end. I personally had a hard time with this, particularly the fighting scene but it seems like people enjoyed it so it's all good!
Magic Kiss - One of my personal favorites. It's about how Hawkeye talks about his first kiss with Riesz. It's not a very fluffy first kiss, but a very dramatic and romantic one, nonetheless. I'm very proud of this one!
Scars - A rather short, somewhat steamy fic about Hawkeye and Riesz showing their scars to each other. It's short but sweet, also one of the first ecchi leaning fic I've written.
My Teacher, Our Secret - This is my most popular work, it seems. It's a High school AU Hawkeye x Riesz where Riesz is his homeroom teacher and Hawkeye is her student. It's PWP. It's Teacher x Student. Also has an 'almost caught' moment. What else is there to say? Haha
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Almost always! If I haven't then... Maybe I was busy and missed the notification. But I make sure to always respond when I do see it! The fandom's very small, so I'd like to be able to interact with everyone as much as I can!
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Torn between Next Spring, which is a moody fic abour Hawkeye not being able to express his love for the now Queen of Laurent Riesz, and heartbeat, which is about a soon to marry Hawkeye and Riesz, but Hawkeye having terminal illness. The latter feels more like an angsty premise rather than ending, which is why I'm considering the two at all haha
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Magic Kiss! Please read it! Happiest, heartwarming ending ☺️ Promise! (Hawkeye x Riesz, of course)
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Nope, fandom too small for that shit.

I like Magic Kiss a lot, but I feel like it's tied with Falling for You! The latter is about a regretful Hawkeye who wasn't able to tell his feelings to Riesz after the party disbands, but perhaps fate has something in store for him. Please read it! I am quite proud of those two.

Four Ships:
Reinako (Hino Rei x Aino Minako from Sailor Moon franchise, but specifically in live action PGSM): Please feel free to visit my blog to fully understand the scope of my love for this ship. Words alone within a post is not enough! lol
I think Reinako as a ship isn't necessarily considered officially canon, though the original manga's Stars arc suggest them favourited by Takeuchi Naoko to be together. Frankly it kinda came out of nowhere until the Rei and Minako's Girl School Battle side story, and then they are like glued together in the last arc of the manga, so it's a suggested slow burn?
The live action is a whole different beast, these two were thrown into each other's lives like a tornado. Their story beautifully complex and messily dramatic for a supposed kids-oriented sentai-like serie. These two had me at a choke hold and my heart and soul was theirs ever since.
Swan Queen (Emma Swan x Regina Mills, Once Upon A Time): The ship I suffered heart aches from the most. The Savior and redeemed Evil Queen co-parenting a son, their character history and dynamic was filled with so much artful subtext and plot parallels, it was such a waste they didn't end up together. They had so much potential, but screw heteronormativity in consumed media. Literally they would have become the canon main pairing of the series had one of them been a man. *deep breath and heavy sigh*
Royai (Roy Mustang x Riza Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist):
" I want you to protect my back. Do you understand? To entrust my back to you means that you can shoot me from behind anytime. If I step off of the path, shoot and kill me with those hands. You are qualified to do that. Will you follow me?" from Roy to Riza pre-main story
"Don't go where I can't follow." from Riza to Roy at the end of their series.
They have so many other iconic moments together, but these two quotes will stay with me forever as the most romantic thing I've ever read. They are basically canon in a way where these two are confirmed to be at each other's side for eternity but their shared goals meant they'll likely never act on their feelings overtly. It's all about the subtext and knowing the shared layered history, and more importantly, the sins they wish to atone for, striving to make the word better.
Bumbleby (Blake Belladonna x Yang Xiao Long from RWBY): After 8 volumes and 6 chapters with the most amazing slow burn story done well in mainstream media, these two officially became canon very recently. But at what cost? (jfc the developments of V9C7 and V9C8 was soul-shattering)
But seriously though, Blake and Yang's chemistry was made clear from the very start. There's even significance to their character design - eye colours that mirrors each other's aura colour - the colour of one's soul! Like the signs were there even before the series STARTED. Then the darker, heavier elements of the story revealed itself starting the end of Volume 3, and we see both Yang and Blake making personal sacrifices for the sake of each other, without understanding the devastating impact of their different act of self-sacrifice had on each other. Both had personal challenges and barrier to overcome before they could commit themselves to each other. And boy, oh boy, how they bounced back stronger and more beautiful than ever!

Last Movie: I've not watched a movie in so long, I honestly have no clue. lol
Craving: I'm eagerly waiting Legend of Zela Tears of the Kingdom's release! I'm also wanting to get back to making gifs, illustration and liveblogging for the blog, but it's been tough. :(

Think about all your Little Guys™. Your blorbos. The ones you're attached to. Visualise them on a shelf, like little figurines perhaps. Now who's present? Are they in a specific order? Are they posed? Did they come with little accessories?
I've tried to write this answer a few times now, and always end up forgetting someone, so here's hoping I remember everyone this time!
I'm very much so a maximalist. Every blorbo I've ever had is on this shelf. Some are old and haven't been played with in a while, but all are well loved and prized possessions. They're not really in any order on my shelf; they're mostly just in the same poses as they were the last time I played with them (and they're all the poseable kind of action figures, you know? Like the Star Wars Black Series figures)
I'm gonna go through them in order of how long they've been up on my shelf!
First off we have Benjamin Franklin Hawkeye Pierce. He's the oldest blorbo, and his paint is a little bit faded and patchy in places, but he still looks as good now as he did 15 years ago. He's wearing his stupid hawaiian print shirt, and he came with a little medical bag accessory, but I lost that years ago. He actually sat on my shelf, all but forgotten, for the majority of the last 15 years, but I dusted him off last year when I got into MASH and even though his joints are rusty, he still moves really well! He's currently sitting with my Radar, but I didn't get Radar until last year, so more on that later
Next we have Obi-Wan Kenobi. He's not as old as my Hawkeye, but he's actually in worse shape as far as faded and patchy paint goes, because even though I'm always careful with my blobos, he's the one who's been played with the most. He's the RotS edition, and I still have the outer robe accessory that came with him, but most of the time he just wears his basic Jedi robes. He actually spent a good 6 or 7 years hidden away in The Box under my bed, during the time when I was actively avoiding all Star Wars content, but now he's standing on my shelf with my Anakin, who I didn't get until a few years ago, so more on them later too!
The next blorbo is Erik, the Phantom of the Opera. I've got the theater edition with a removeable mask, but he came with a special edition of the book. He came with a fancy schmancy black cloak that I've managed to lose, but I still have the mask, which he wears. He's a blorbo that I regularly dust, but he's still sitting at the end of the shelf, un-played with for the most part (but recently, what with the closing of Phantom on Broadway, I've been thinking about picking him up again)
Next is my Hetalia blorbos, who are grouped together due to the timing! I've got Prussia (Gilbert Beilschmidt), Canada (Matthew Williams), Germany (Ludwig Beilschmidt), Italy (Feliciano Vargas), and Romano (Lovino Vargas). They're all very well loved, and the group of blorbos I find myself pulling down time and time again. They all came with multiple outfits, so while they mostly wear either street clothes or suits, sometimes my plots require them to wear their military outfits from season 1. Some of them also came with additional accessories, which I still have! Prussia came with a little mini Gilbird, who usually is perched on his shoulder, and Canda came with a little Kumajiro, who's also posable. They're currently all sitting together around a little dining table that I've made for the last thing I was writing
Next is Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield, who are grouped together due to timing. Bilbo came with multiple outfits, but I've lost most of them over the years, and instead he just wears his simple adventuring clothes. Thorin only came with the one outfit, but his special accessory is Orcrist, his sword (Bilbo also came with Sting, his sword!). Both of them have slightly faded paint because I've left them out in the sun on my desk while playing with them a few too many times, but they still look as good as the day I got them. They're sitting together next to a campfire that I had made for the last time I wrote for them. I also have a young Frodo Baggins, who was custom made specifically to go with my Bilbo and Thorin. He's wearing a little blue hobbit child outfit, and he's sitting on the opposite side of the fire from his uncles
And next is Legolas Greenleaf and Gimli Gloinson. They each came with two outfits: their canon outfits, and then outfits that I had made specifically for them to wear for a specific thing. Currently theyre wearing the special outfits, because that's what they were wearing the last time I played with them. Legolas has a white button down shirt that's half unbuttoned and rolled up to his elbows and fancy skinny jeans, and Gimli is wearing a flannel shirt that's rolled up to his elbows and jeans that are muddy on the knees. They did come with accessories, but those are their canon things, Legolas has his bow and arrows and Gimli has his axe, and because the last time I played with them it wasn't canon those are currently put away safely
Next is Kylo Ren and Rey! Before you ask where Hux is, I hadn't actually gotten into him at the time i got Kylo and Rey! Rey is still practically brand new, because I put her away in The Box under the bed for a few years and only got her out again when I got Kylo out to play with my new Hux. Kylo's more used, but he also spent several years in The Box. Both he and Rey came with their lightsabers, and Kylo's mask is removeable. They're both currently standing with Hux, but since I didn't get him til later, more on them later !
So the next ones are Tinkerbell and Bobble, from the Tinkerbell movies! They're both really really stiff, because I haven't played with them in years, but they've been sitting on my shelf all this time and I still dust them off regularly. Both of them are in their canon outfits, and neither came with accessories, which is fine with me! They're currently sitting near the end of the shelf, just because they're more out of the way there, but every time I notice them I think about playing with them again
And next is the LoZ blorbos! There's Link, Sidon, Yunobo, and Beedle. Link came with his Sheikah Slate, and Beedle came with his backpack, but Sidon and Yunobo don't have any accessories. They're also not sized properly, so Sidon and Yunobo are only a little bit taller than Link and Beedle. Currently they're standing next to a stablefront I had put together, but I've been gathering materials to build new sets for a new thing I'm going to write!
Finally we've gotten to the Star Wars blorbos properly! So this was when I dug Obi-Wan out of The Box, got myself an Anakin (a RotS edition!) and started playing with them again! I modded my Anakin to have all cybernetic limbs to bring him in line with my personal headcanons for a fic series that I have yet to write and dear god has it been three years already? where's the fic Tomas where is it? He came with an outer robe too, but he also mostly just wears his Jedi robes! Currently he and Obi-Wan are standing and holding their lightsabers, because last time I played with them they were discussing them
And then I finally dug Kylo out of The Box, because I had gotten a Hux!! Rey stayed in The Box for a while longer, but alas. Hux didn't come with any accessories, but I got a custom made lightsaber for him, and currently he and my Kylo are in the middle of lightsaber training! I should probably get back to that fic, I bet they'll be glad for the movement 😅
Next is Qui-Gon Jinn, who's currently sitting pushed all the way to the back of the shelf because I only have one active plot with him in it, but I make sure to dust him regularly! He only came with a lightsaber accessory, which is good, because I'd probably have lost any additional ones at this point
Rey did finally get retrieved from The Box after that! Her clothing is all rumpled and I need to fix her joints; she's very stiff, but she still looks alright. Like my Qui-Gon, she's currently sitting toward the back of the shelf, because I don't have anything with her in it, but that's okay, because I've got a few plot bunnies that include her too for someday when I can write more again!
And next is a young Tom Riddle! I considered getting a Harry Potter or even a Severus Snape, but Tom was the only one I could afford at the time. He's dressed in smart grey 1950's trousers and a white button down, and he came with a wand accessory. He doesn't actually sit on the shelf, though, he sits on my nightstand because I love himb, so I keep him with the character letters I have which uhhh are not relevant to the current conversation sooo 😅
Next is a young Sheev Palpatine and Hego Damask! Sheev is dressed in his Naboo finery, and Hego has his transpirator but is otherwise dressed in black robes. They both came with lightsabers, but current plots prevent me from using them 😔 they're currently standing together in a half-built set that's meant to be Hego's penthouse in Kalandi Springs, but I haven't finished it yet, so really they're more just standing in a corner of maroon
And now we're up to the MASH blorbos! I seem to be really collecting them, because when I first dusted off my Hawkeye I was sure he'd be a loner like Erik is, but then I got a Radar O'Reilly, and then I added a Trapper McIntyre and a Margaret Houlihan, and now the Father Mulcahy that I ordered has just arrived,,, They're all dressed in their fatigues, and Trapper came with a med bag and Radar came with a clipboard. Margaret and Father Mulcahy didn't come with any accessories. I've got Hawkeye and Radar sitting together in a little mini version of the Swamp set that I cobbled together, and Trapper and Margaret are playing cards together at a table that's meant to be in the mess tent, but I had fatigue issues before I could finish building that set! I'm not really sure where to put Father Mulcahy currently, because the one active plot I have that includes him is one I'm still primarily brainstorming, so for now he's just sitting by himself toward the back of the shelf.
I have hopes to get a Maxwell Klinger next, and I've already started sourcing patterns to make him cute little dresses and other outfits, but alas, I don't currently have the funds 😔 I've got plenty of other blorbos to play with though, so it's all gucci lol

ok well, I’m well into s11 and so it’s time to talk about s10
Edit: talked so much about Margaret, that now I’m gonna divide it into individual posts: this one Margaret, then Klinger, then Charles, and maybe some closing thoughts
it’s funny because I’m reading back on the episodes and they were really solid + had some overall favourites in them, but I think my head has been in a “rapidly approaching the end” kind of mood, which has made it hard for me to go into watching episodes that are following the same patterns as before.
which is interesting, because obviously it’s syndication, and so that’s what the episodes are meant to be doing, I’m just being more and more subjective in how I engage with that format. I instinctively want these episodes (and the s11 ones) to give me character insights and building stakes, but of course it’s not going down like that
(on that note I wonder if the backhalf of s11 will have some of that -- not the stakes so much, but big character moments that affect them throughout the rest of the season, or if it’s not until the last episode that these things occur)
I think my main (subconscious?) comparison while watching this is deep space nine -- I’m drawing lines across the two that aren’t at all intentional, but just come from how deeply these two shows have affected me, but of course one of the things that makes deep space nine special is that it resisted easy categorisation by making a series of arcs that continued throughout the whole show and continuously affected and changed the characters, even as it was technically meant to be in syndication (and airing things out of order was consequently a mess)
watching MASH for the first time, what surprised me was that it threaded in long-term character arcs into the syndication format, with Margaret’s arc being the one that I think is the most obvious.
so speaking of Margaret I think that arc culminated in “stars and stripes,” in season 8, which gave me one of my favourite interactions between any characters on the show (the final one with her and Hawkeye).
In s9+10 she’s had “father’s day” and “the birthday girls” which both give us things (in particular was interesting to finally see her father and be like... “yeah, you’re exactly the kind of man I imagined... a dick” + whenever Potter especially stands up for Margaret I’m warm and fuzzy -- “birthday girls” sees a rare Klinger and Margaret bonding moment, and I just rewatched “aid station” way back in s3 in which he and Hawkeye both tell her she’s their favourite, so am glad they got this moment)
but I would argue, especially “the birthday girls” isn’t so much taking her character new places, so much as polishing up some things we already know + giving a few neat character interactions
beyond that she’s been far more of an ensemble member, and not in a way where she gets to have narratives in conjunction with others, except for in “give ’em hell, hawkeye,” in which she’s specifically in charge of the garden + speaks with the Korean kid who’s struggling
In “that’s show biz” she fades a bit to the back after the first half, but it does have one of my favourite things about Margaret, which is her bonding with another woman (and me feeling some kinda gay way about it)
-- I’m also personally very fond of the dressing-down she gives BJ in “wheelers and dealers” -- she and BJ and Hawkeye don’t share as much space as during the hey-days of s7. (There’s also “oh, how we danced,” in s9 when she dances with BJ, but she’s not so involved with the plot beyond that, which is similar to her space in “wheelers and dealers” and generally how I’ve felt her character to exist in s10).
EDIT: actually as with so many others, one of my favourite Margaret moments in s10 came from “where there’s a will, there’s a war,” and it’s the scene where she and Hawkeye are laughing in the supply room. have talked a lot about how she and Hawkeye have one of my favourite dynamics as a particular kind of misfit finding one another, and that scene highlights it so well!!!
EDIT EDIT: I cannot BELIEVE I forgot her scream in “follies of the living” it’s one of the top ten Margaret moments of all time! I feel like that really contained some of the tensions I’ve been missing from her character in s9+10, and it didn’t need that much episode space!
what I’m getting at is that she’s not much of a plot-driver, either on her own or in coordination with one or a couple of other characters. She’s in the main ensemble, but she’s not getting to do much that tells us about how she feels or where she might be going next. there’s a little bit of plateauing going on in my opinion
lastly wanted to mention “sons and bowlers,” in which I felt kind of bad for her the whole way through, which was at odds with the intentions of the episode I feel. I think she deserved to be angrier at the way she was being treated in it, rather than “just” desperate for a chance to prove herself, and I think that was a good example of where I feel like I’m missing something from how she’s included this second-to-last season, in connection with what I was saying above (that is, as childish as it comes out, I want there to be some lasting deep character exploration to take me towards the end of the story. I think my expectations are unfairly higher, because I’m sad)
It also features this one sweater I have mixed feelings about, which she wears reeelatively often these days (I am going to figure out how often on this next watch I’m doing). On the one hand, it indicates a freer Margaret who isn’t so bound by military conventions in order to create her sense of self, on the other hand, I feel like it acts as a softening characteristic, similar to (more ds9 parallels) how Kira Nerys went from being a stompy butch to growing her hair out and wearing dresses in order to allegedly not alienate fans.
so whenever I see it I feel a bit... suspicious.
It’s a hard balance for her to pull off the abrasive, perfectionist a-student with a chip on her shoulder characteristics with the person who has softened, because she now trusts the people around her and doesn’t have to put up so much of a front all the time. And I imagine this is all so subjective, and back in “stars and stripes” we got some of the core of Margaret’s conflict and it relates very much to what I’m saying -- everything that she is is balanced precariously and constantly expected to perform in one way or another for men around her. In a lot of ways that performance relates to how an audience views her as well. She has a lot more to pull off than the other characters, and has from the get-go
It’s nice to think that maybe her character has let go of some of those expectations, but at the same time I feel like there’s so much more depth to get out of the questions and conflicts her character has, and I don’t think a looser sweater can solve them
