Need resources for learning a rare language? Here's where I suggest starting.
A guide to finding (free) resources for those with niche target languages.
Wikibooks! -> https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Subject:Languages
Wikibooks my beloved. There are books for a LOT of languages here, unfortunately not many of them are complete. It's always worth checking through though! Books are sorted by continent and completion. As far as I know, there's no standard template for these books, but most all of them are formatted like textbooks, with lessons, indexes, exercises, etc. Books might be slow to update but most of them aren't dead projects.
Omniglot! -> https://omniglot.com
This ugly little website is SO helpful for finding resources for a ton of languages. Unfortunately it's kind of hard to navigate, so I'd just search up "[target language] omniglot.com" and the page for your language should show up. Scroll to the bottom and boom there should be a list of resources for learning. This site also has some fun stuff like a list of proverbs in various language. I'd recommend browsing it for fun sometime :)
Youtube! (duh?)
Maybe this is a little obvious, but it's worth mentioning. Try searching stuff like "learn [target language]" or "[target language] lessons". Don't be discouraged if there aren't a lot of results though, that happened for me!
WIKTIONARY!! (my beloved) -> https://www.wiktionary.org
This is a big ol' multilingual online dictionary!! In my experience, most words/entries have an IPA transcription and declension/conjugation chart (if needed). Sometimes words even have audio files to go along with them. Wiktionary has a pretty handy way of categorizing stuff, too. Typically, there's a "Category: [Target Language]", and in that category there will be various sub-topics like phrases, colors, words for body parts, and even vulgarities (really this site has it all!). I might make an in-depth guide on how I use wiktionary at some point because it has seriously been such a lifesaver for me. Also see if they have a frequency list for your target language. Wiktionary sometimes has lists of the 1000(+) most commonly used words in a language. It might not have it for yours, but if it does that can be very helpful for learning vocab.
Tumblr!
Not always fruitful, and definitely not always easy to search, but this place has some hidden gems if you keep an eye out for them. Try searching basic tags like the name of your target language in it's language (sorry that's poorly phrased... I mean like if you're learning Turkish search the #Türkçe tag rather than just #Turkish). This is handy for finding content in your target language. Recently I found a link to a site that has a bunch of free dubs of cartoons and animes done in my target language. I've also found comics done in my target language. Also, just reading what people are posting in that language is helpful and a fun way to immerse yourself in the language. As long as the memes have words you're learning!!
Anki (and flashcard sites in general)!
A free app for mobile (though with free there's a limited amount of time you can use it daily). Anki lets you search for public decks that others have made for learning your target language. Even if you don't find a premade deck, I recommend keeping it around because this app is great for making flash cards. They have an integrated format for foreign language vocab but it basically fills in with Google Translate, so just watch out for the accuracy with that. Besides Anki try searching other flashcard sites like Quizlet (though you might need to pay for that now? not sure). Generally, searching "[target language] flashcards" into google will have some good results.
The CIA (well, Foreign Service Institute) -> https://www.fsi-language-courses.org/fsi-language-courses/, https://www.livelingua.com/fsi/
Free textbooks made by the American government to train spies and ambassadors? Released to the public? For free? Wowza! Admittedly a lot of these are pretty outdated, but a free textbook is a free textbook. If your target language isn't on one of the sites I linked, try googling "[target language] FSI course", "[target language] FSI pdf", etc.
Well that's all I can think of now but I might edit this later. Feel free to add on :)
Good luck to everyone trying to learn a niche language, I feel your pain!! Remember that there's always more stuff if you dig hard enough! Happy studying and hope this helps!!!

how did you go about learning german? was any of it self-study or did you go straight to classes? and how important do you think living there has been to your learning journey?
i did A1 german classes in university which gave me a really good foundation. i would say that if you start learning a language, it would be good to invest in getting a teacher and going to a good course for it because a good foundation in the language can really guide you with learning the more complex and advanced aspects of said language. after that i hadn’t learned german for about 2 years and then covid hit, & due to the german classes in bahrain being shit and useless waste of money in my experience (& online classes being so expensive), i relied on reading basic stuff in german, using german songs & tv shows & movies as ways to learn bits of the language here & there. it mainly helped familiarise me with the language, improve my pronunciation, and learn a handful of words. i also did duolingo on the side which imo is mostly good for maintaining your language level and learning some new words and practicing your grammar, tho generally i think the stuff on there is pretty low-level stuff that i can complete with ease now (and just as a note, my german is far from perfect yet it’s quite easy for me so i tend to finish all the lessons perfectly now. it’s more helpful for people between A1-low B2 imo, if you’re in C1 it might be too easy but it doesn’t harm to practice using it). i also use an app called drops which reaaaaally helps me with getting a larger vocabulary, but it’s limited to 5 mins per day unless you pay which is annoying. i tried lingoda for a short time (free trial hehe) but i personally didn’t like it much since it’s not rly structured and people can sign into classes in any level they want, regardless of their own language level (my gf liked it tho and said it can be worth the money & u can find some good quality classes in there). besides that, i have taken online classes in german up until the B1 level, and at B1 i moved to germany and started physical intensive classes. i would highly recommend the intensive daily classes for learning the language bc 1. you learn faster 2. you’re practicing the language daily. also always do the hw provided bc it helps you practice at home + rely less on the teacher and learn from your mistakes.
moving to germany definitely helped with improving my language level and practicing my language. i live in a city where english is quite commonly spoken BUT i do encounter grumpy germans that refuse to speak english every once in a while. + i live in a working class area so people here generally only speak arabic (lots of refugees where i live) or turkish or german which is also great at forcing me to speak in german (arabic is often easier but sometimes the men harass me when they realise im arab lol so honestly german is safer for me). ordering food is one of the things i am rly good at doing in german now bc of how often i have to do it in german. also discussing my internet connection issues bc for some reason no one in the customer support of our internet service provider speaks english. also public transportation. besides that, i recall how helpful it was seeing signs in german all around bc it helped teach me terms that were almost never mentioned in german classes. visiting museums and getting tours and going to events are also all helpful bc there’s a lot of german in those settings. so id say that yeah, living in germany was a great help in learning german. my gf’s german is really good bc she learned it while doing an exchange program in germany & she became more or less fluent through speaking to germans at parties in german all the time. it’s rly rly good practice and also helps build a good foundation + improve your confidence when speaking the language. if i had stayed in bahrain, i wouldn’t feel confident to have even the most basic conversations i think but living here and seeing germans act shocked when i tell them i was A2 one year ago rly helped make me more confident and pushed me to try talking in german over defaulting to english/arabic. i highly recommend taking this kind of path if you have the means to do so. also id advise ensuring that whichever language school or course you choose is of decent / high quality bc some are just garbage and a waste of money.

standard modern arabic is a simplification of the classical Arabic language and at the same time it’s an elevation of the different Arabic colloquial languages.
Classical Arabic language is the source of modern standard Arabic and is the language used in quran, and modern standard Arabic is currently used in formal occasions like conferences, lectures, curricula, and Arabic media platforms.
Now, we will get deeper into the beauty of the Arabic language, that the modern standard Arabic is the branches and the classical Arabic language is the original and permanent roots of them.
is modern standard Arabic useful?
standard modern Arabic is the formal language for countries talking in Arabic.
modern standard Arabic importance
1-it’s the simplified form of the classical Arabic language, this helps in spreading the standard Arabic and leaving the colloquial.
2-the standard modern Arabic has a complete linguistic structure with its particular pillars of grammar and other language sciences, but in a modern way to match the requirements of the present and future.
3-It removes the barriers between the Arabs due to the multiplicity of dialects, as it is a simple and understandable Arabic language in all countries.
4-A flexible version of the Arabic language, where it can be combined with different dialects, and this happens when translating from other languages, as the receiving dialects of those translations are taken into account, which achieves more privacy.
5-standard modern Arabic will make you understand Arabic news, documentary media programs,   announcements in public places and transports, literature, and educational courses.
6-for non-Arabic speakers learning the classical Arabic language is not enough to communicate with Arabs, they will have to learn the dialects also to understand the Arabs in the country that they live in.
And also learning dialects only won’t be enough for those who come in for studying or research purposes, but standard modern Arabic is the connecting link between both communication and studying purposes.
7-it could be a foundation step to learn different dialects if you want more communication skills in Arabic countries.
how to learn modern standard arabic?
Learning standard modern Arabic is a step on the way of learning and research in many fields aligned with Arabic countries and cultures, so searching for a way to learn it is very important, and now we will mention some of them:

how does modern standard Arabic differ from Arabic dialects?
The Arabic language is a rich and complicated language, as we said before the are Arabic can be divided into three types:
1-The classical standard language
2-modern standard Arabic
3-Arabic dialects
So according to this there is a difference between modern standard Arabic and Arabic dialects, and firstly we will talk about the Arabic dialects, and modern standard Arabic separately.
Arabic dialects
Dialects are a particular form of language related to a particular group of people, not only between countries but also you could find differences between cities and regions in the same country.
Here, it's the verbal language that is used between community members to communicate, it’s not the form of language which is used in studying or politics, but it’s essential to learn and use if you want close communication with a particular community.
The reason for the difference between the Arabic dialects is because of two reasons:
1- the first one is Isolation and boundaries that make each group of people have special characteristics that differ from others, the isolation may be because of natural factors, for example; those who live in the desert are far away from those who live beside the sea.
2-the second reason is due to imperialism, that the different Arabic countries suffered from, like Algeria, suffered from french colonialism, you could differentiate the Algerian dialects by the effect of the french language in it.
So, learning dialects is very important for communication and also for recognizing the different factors that different countries faced.
standard modern arabic
As we explained before it’s the modern version of the classical Arabic word to be aligned with the world changes, modern standard Arabic alphabet is the same as the classical Arabic, but there are other differences like the acceptance of the modern standard Arabic the foreign punctuation and symbols.
So finally the difference between modern Arabic and the dialects, is that the modern standard arabic is the form that is used in formal ceremonies, learning, and research, but the dialects are the verbal communication form of Arabic language.
Summary:
modern standard Arabic is the Arabic language in the modern form, the classical one is mainly used in the quran and Islamic sciences, but the modern standard Arabic is used in politics, media, news, lectures, and others.
modern standard Arabic differs from the classical language to match the changes of the present world,
It helps to raise the language of the communities and decrease the effect of the colloquial because it’s easier and more flexible.
Learning modern standard Arabic will facilitate your journey in learning and communicating with Arab communities and cultures.

Langblr Reactivation Challenge
Week 1
Day 2: Write a list of goals you have for your target languages. Make both long term and short term goals. An overall goal could be to have the ability to talk with native speakers with ease and a smaller goal would be to finally learn that difficult grammar point that's been plaguing you for ages. How will you achieve them?
Basque: my main target language
Weekly: I plan on sticking to 1 lesson a week from the book "The Basque language: A practical introduction" by Alan R. King. I'll stick to 1 lesson weekly because I bring my notebook with me to uni and do excercises during boring lectures and breaks I have in between (15-min breaks) and I don't even have to do anything at home. It's easier for me sticking to a habit like this.
Small habit: listen to a podcast 2-3x a week (it doesn't matter if I don't, because I listen to Basque songs a lot and on a daily basis anyway). These podcasts aren't to be listened only once because my level is still too low to understand. At this point I just get to understand more of the context of the podcast every time I listen to the same one.
In the next month (until 2023): I need to review all grammar I learned because I feel like I brushed over some parts a bit. I won't force myself to master that grammar but I need a reminder. Same goes for vocab, especially those fillers, words like "just, anyway" etc.
In 6 months: I want to be comfortable enough to go on Tandem app and talk to euskaldunak there. My goal until May-June is to become conversational, so that would be my test to check if I managed it.
Spanish: daily used language
Short-term goals: I don't have because I don't even sit to study anymore, I just pick up things by using it online all the time.
Small habits: I already do the comprehension excercises by listening to Real Madrid players speak Spanish, but I want to find some fun podcasts to listen to sometimes
1 thing on my wishlist: I want to read a book in Spanish, I have bought a middle grade book which I haven't yet had the courage to start because I had a bad experience at trying to read German books, but I know my Spanish is much better, I just kind of have this fear
Long-term goal: take the DELE C1 exam in autumn 2023/spring 2024 (I'm missing some of the basic vocabulary, even for A1, so I need to work on that)
German: I need to regain the level I had
I'm not excited about this because my German is school-taught and I finished school 2 years ago. Now I have a completely different language learning system and I don't know how to apply it to the language I had a broken system for studying. I want to get back to it, hopefully next year, but I still don't know how
Figure out which language to learn next
I won't force myself for this but Here's the list of languages I think I want to take up (from most excited about to somewhat excited/not sure at all):
Japanese
Arabic
Korean
Portuguese
Polish
Turkish
Russian
Keep in mind this list can change anytime, I'm kind of getting the idea of learning Finnish or Hungarian, so I might just randomly take up one of those. My brain is unpredictable but it's also better to listen to my guts than force myself to decide on a language. This is exactly how I took up Basque 😅
