You push him away, gentle but firm,pity crossing your face. He can’t bear looking at it.

“Genji … look, I-”“Yeah no,I get it.” he says and pushes himself off, turns his back to you.“Lead me on and have your laugh but when it comes to deliveryou’re-”“It’s not like that-”“The fuck it is.”He’s being unfair but can’t stop himself. Not with the hurtburning in his chest.

“Genji.”“Get out. Just getout.”You stay, try to reason. When you reach out to hug him hesnaps. Whips around and punches you in the chest, throws you off thebed. Only the wires and tubes attached to him prevent him fromfollowing.

“Get out!” he screams, throws thefirst thing he can reach which just happens to be the laptop. Youcatch it, scramble to your feet, throw him one last look and leave.

Dr Ziegler passes you by on your wayout, wants to check with her patient. Genji makes her go away, too.

In the end he’s alone to regret hisoutburst. To wish you’d come back, tell him it was all amisunderstanding. That you do love him, that he hasn’t ruinedeverything.

The risks of three back-to-school plans, ranked

School is back in session for many students across the country, which means tough decisions surrounding education are falling on the shoulders of teachers, school districts, and parent-guardians. With all of the unknowns of coronavirus still swirling in the air, it can be hard to judge whether ringing the morning bell and opening the classroom door is worth it.

There’s a long list of health precautions to consider before sending kids (or yourself) back to school, namely how high infection rates are in your community, how old the children are, and how well they might take to an alternative like online schooling. The solution won’t be the same for any two communities or students. After all, physically going to school has a lot of social and psychological benefits beyond learning—so for some, it might be worth the risk to go back.

Even if there’s no perfect answer, however, there’s one option that falls well below the rest, and that’s be going back to school acting like absolutely nothing has changed. Here are a few schooling options ranked by risk for COVID-19 transmission.

Riskiest: Back to school as usual

It goes without saying that returning to life before COVID-19 swept over the globe is a recipe for disaster. And for schools that require students to move through crowded hallways, ride a bus, be dropped off in one massive cloud at the start of the day, and sit in classes of up to 30 other kids, the opportunity for spread is seemingly boundless. A county in Georgia is already dealing with over a thousand new cases after opening up schools with lax restrictions.

While kids might not show as many acute cases of COVID-19, they can still transmit the virus and end up with life-threatening inflammatory illnesses, says Rainu Kaushal, the senior associate dean of clinical research at Cornell University’s medical school. Also remember, children aren’t the only people who are inside the classroom—teachers and other staff are also at risk. Some school employees may be older or have separate comorbidities; some might also commute long distances to get to work, which could lead to the disease spreading between different communities.

“The risk to them just increases with every risk factor,” Kaushal says.

If your school district seems to be hurrying along with a lenient game plan and you have the option to do at-home learning, first gauge how bad the rate of infection is in your community by paying attention to your local news and state health department website. In some places around the country and globe, the virus is more under control, and it might be more of a possibility to go back to school normally.

Schools don’t exist in a vacuum, says Aubree Gordan, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan. What’s happens in the community affects what’s going on in the classroom, and vice versa. Even if only one kid gets sick, they’re putting staff members and students at risk, as well as their family members and anyone that each of those family members interacts with.

Risky: Back to school with modifications

Before we dive into how schools can take precautions to make the classroom a safe and healthy space, it’s important to remember why it’s so critical to get classes back up and running in the first place.

“School serves as a safety net for so many children,” Kaushal says, “in terms of food, in terms of safety from violence that might be happening in their home or neighborhood, and in terms of check-ins for emotional and physical well being.”

Walking into school opens up opportunities for children that can’t be replicated home. For young kids, especially, school teaches essential social skills like waiting, sharing, and interacting with peers. Not to mention, it’s hard enough for adults to focus on a virtual meeting for hours on end, so it can’t be any easier for seven-year-olds.

To provide that structure while keeping everyone healthy, schools can adapt in a handful of ways. Some safe options, Kaushal says, include organizing classrooms to allow six feet of spacing between desks, keeping windows open and auditing for ventilation, separating schedules between cohorts, rotating which kids come to school during certain days or times so classrooms and drop off spots aren’t full all at the same time, and swapping out recreational activities.

These suggestions may sound easy, but putting them to work can be harder than it seems. Providing separate crayons so that children don’t have to share might be straightforward enough, but getting every child in the district their own microscope is a different story, Kaushal adds. Traditional COVID-19 avoidance methods like wearing a mask can be pretty challenging for a group of kindergartners sitting in a room for eight hours straight.

Having diligent cleaning practices and offering a “mask-free zone” for students to take little breaks could help ease some difficulties, Kaushal says. As for lunch and recess, unfortunately, there’s just not a whole lot that can be done to make these activities happen like they used to.

But even if a school is doing everything right, there’s still a chance that someone from the community with a case of COVID-19 might wander in and pass it off to someone else, Gordon says. The touched-on practices decrease the probability of a significant outbreak, but that chance can never truly be zero.

Not risky: School from home

For high-risk kids who can handle or enjoy working from home, doing school primarily online is the most secure option. After all, staying inside your home is pretty much the only fool-proof way from catching or spreading COVID-19. So, if you have a child with asthma or other health issues, or maybe even a family member that lives with you who is in the high-risk population, this is likely the way to go. Not to mention, if you live in a town or state where rates keep rising and policy action is limited, it’s safer to go this route than return to a business-as-usual school. Many districts have options for remote learning if you’re hesitant to let your kids go back to school, Gordon says.

Of course, learning from home is challenging for caretakers trying to juggle work and younger kids who can’t seem to focus. What’s more, not all students have access to laptops, software, and a stable internet connection. Just know that you don’t need to make one grand decision for all schools lumped together: If you have kids that range in age, there might be different solutions, Gordon says. For example, teens might be able to take classes just fine from home—and given that they’re at higher risk of coming down with serious symptoms, it might be okay to keep them there. Younger children need more supervision and structure at home.

If you decide to take the remote-learning route, it’s also important to remind your kids that this switch isn’t forever, Kaushal says. Online classes might be the way to go for the next handful of months, but the day will come where they can play with their friends and snack in the cafeteria again.

And if you decide to send your kids back to school physically, make sure to talk to them about how things may be changing, and of course, get them personal protective equipment that fits. Luckily, masks come sin all sorts of shapes, sizes, and patterns, so they make the perfect back-to-school accessory.

Seconds later, face beaming, his digitised silhouette is bopping across the screen together with Dahl’s gangly giant.

It’s just one of many experiences on offer at a new downtown development in the Dutch city of Groningen that is seeking to reinvent urban hubs for the post-consumer age.

The €101m, trapezoid Forum building is part library, part meeting space, part science museum and part recreational hangout – a 10-storey “multi-space” designed to resonate with citizens who know that shopping is not necessarily the answer. It’s a new-look department store that doesn’t actually sell very much.

But with high streets feeling the pinch across the developed world, with shops shuttered and town centres wondering what they are for any more, the Groningen experiment is being closely watched.

Nowhere is that truer than in the UK, where more than 16,000 retail stores closed last year at the cost of more than 143,000 jobs. The picture in the US is similar, with more than 9,300 shops going to the wall in 2019 as shoppers increasingly move online.

In Europe, city centres are being emptied of life as skyrocketing rental costs push low-income residents out to the peripheries. In cities such as Paris, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Luxembourg, for instance, 80% of citizens say affordable housing is hard to find.

It’s early days, but the Forum certainly feels like it is working. More than 700,000 people – three times the city’s total population – have visited the library since it opened late last year. So, what’s the big draw?

There are books galore (92,000 in total), but they are for rent, not sale, distributed liberally across multiple mezzanine floors with a joyous disregard for Dewey decimal discipline. Geography on one floor, history on another, mathematics … somewhere, presumably.

For the non-bookish, there’s plenty besides: a six-screen cinema, two exhibition halls, a couple of cafes, a museum (about comics, no less), a 250-seater auditorium, and a hip (but not overly hip) top-floor restaurant and bar. Oh, plus a rooftop “market square” with panoramic views over the whole of Groningen.

“Every day when I pick him up from school, he asks to come to the Forum. He just finds it so much fun,” says Joris’s dad, Marcel, an archaeologist, who cuts his working day short every Tuesday to accommodate his son’s request.

Right to roam

The comment is music to the ears of Dirk Nijdam, the Forum’s director, who readily admits that lending out books has never been his priority. Instead, what’s driven his thinking since he took on the project six years ago is the idea of creating a space where anyone and everyone can wander in, kick back and collectively feel at home.

“If people walk in and say, ‘Wow, Groningen has got a new library’, then we’ll have failed,” he says. “If you want to come in and just hang out, you should feel just as welcome as if you’re going to an exhibition or taking out a book.”

This notion of “hanging out” gets to the real function of Groningen’s artful new creation: namely, helping fellow citizens mix and mingle and – who knows? – perhaps even taste that nebulous yet ever-necessary thing called “community”.

It’s a mission born, in part, out of Groningen’s struggling city centre. The hope is that the Forum will revitalise the main market square, which, after the German occupation during the second world war was home to a dingy car park for decades.

At the same time, the project marks a bold riposte to the effects of modern-day capitalist society: first, in its promotion of an individualistic society; and second, in its commercialisation of public space (ie with malls and coffee bars gradually replacing libraries and community centres).

The Forum is a splendid example of form following function. Clean and contemporary, the final design shouts anything but library. Hotel lobby, perhaps? Department store, even? From the luminous circular information desk, to the free-floating elevators, to the immense, cathedral-esque atrium. It’s all quite discombobulating and really rather marvellous.

Once through the door, the challenge is to make people stay. It’s all about “the experience”, says Nijdam, borrowing from big retail’s mantra de jour. So no security beefs on the door, no blaring Tannoy announcements, no endless queuing. Instead, it’s all soft furnishings, mood lighting and make-yourself-at-home courtesy.

Signposts are also kept to a minimum. Exploration, not explanation, is the building’s guiding motif, says Kamiel Klaasse co-founder of NL Architects, an upstart Amsterdam-based firm that beat off an all-star list (including the late Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid) to win the design contract way back in 2006.

“The brief talked as much about searching as about finding and we interpreted that as an incentive to let people roam,” Klaasse says.

Community connector

The Groningen resident and social activist Ritzo ten Cate is an early cheerleader for the project. Describing the Forum as “one big welcome gesture to us as citizens”, he points to the diversity of the building’s users as proof of its communitarian qualities.

The evidence seems solid. On any given day, you’ll find students working at their laptops, mums with their toddlers, school kids on assignment and grannies reading newspapers. All of them together, under one roof, seemingly as one.

Nor is it just Groningen’s well-heeled citizens who make use of the space. On his many visits, Ten Cate regularly spots friends from the city’s homeless community. Some come to read or use the free internet, while others are after a warm corner to kill time or take a nap.

“The Forum only opened a few months ago, but it’s already doing its job as a connector,” says Ten Cate, who has plans to run a large-scale hackathon there in June.

But as much as the Forum brings people together, is it serving to create community.

For Paul de Rook, an alderman on Groningen city council, it’s a crucial question. More than just shared physical space, genuine community is about a shared understanding of one another, he argues. “That’s why it’s really valuable to create spaces where people … can see what is going on in other people’s lives.”

In a nod to this reality, the Forum seeks to orient all its cultural activities around a common thread. Whether it’s the current exhibition on artificial intelligence (recently on show at the Barbican in London) or Spike Jonze’s futuristic film Her at the cinema, everyone is collectively inching towards the same page (“optimism about the future”, in the Forum’s case).

Dr Ward Rauws admires the sentiment but harbours doubts. An assistant professor of spatial planning at the University of Groningen, he notes that the core building blocks of community – social capital, civic culture, place identity and so forth – start first at a street-by-street level and expand out from there.

Even so, he remains a big fan of Groningen’s Forum because of its role in helping foster “familiarity”. Echoing De Rook, he defines the term as a state of awareness that “other kinds of citizens exist who might think differently or look different, but who are part of the same community”. It’s a salient point for a university town such as Groningen, where town-gown tensions are a feature of daily life.

Groningen’s audacious experiment in urban planning isn’t without its detractors, most of whom gripe about the final price-tag. Joris’s mum is in that camp. Her son begs to differ. Done with the BFG, he’s now playing a spelling game on one of the library’s iPads. His dad watches on patiently, albeit with half an eye on the upstairs cafe. “Afterwards,” he whispers, “we go for cake.”

What Is Pornography - Part 5 - THE STRUGGLE WITH PORN - Part 22

22. We can’t protect our kids from porn in today’s world.

There is no question about whether our children will see porn. Their exposure to it is inevitable.

While making his documentary Porn on the Brain, Martin Daubney was invited to sit in on a class of teen boys and girls at a school in North England with a fantastic reputation. Jonny Hunt, a sex education consultant, stood before a class of uniformed students — wide-eyed, shy, with high-pitched voices, barely adolescents — and asked them to write a list of all the sexual terms they knew, no matter how extreme. When Hunt pinned their lists to the board, every adult in the room was startled about how much these students knew: their index of terms surpassed the knowledge even of the consultant.

After sitting in on several more classes like this one and interviewing some of the children, Daubney wrote, “It seemed as if the children’s entire expectation of sex had been defined by what they see in online porn.” Young girls spoke of how boys expect porn sex in real life. Boys spoke of how they even stumble across bestiality online. Daubney asked the teens, “On a scale of one to ten, how likely would you say it is that boys and girls your age are watching porn online?” The reply was a chorus of tens, nines, and one eight. All the students admitted that their parents had no idea what they were watching.

Eric Spitznagel, writing for Details magazine, says, “By the time they’re in high school, America’s porn-fed youth have already amassed an encyclopedic knowledge of smut.” Spitznagel was not writing this out of concern for teens but was looking upon their experiences with a middle-aged jealousy. Gone are the days of prepubescent boys stumbling on a father’s stash of magazines in the closet. Boys and girls now consume hard-core video material that is readily available to them.

CyberPsychology and Behavior released the results of a study showing that 93 percent of boys and 62 percent of girls in the United States see porn before the age of eighteen, and many of these exposures are not shut-the-laptop-and-walk-away glimpses but porn binges. According to the 2010 Youth Internet Safety Survey, a quarter of U.S. teens are exposed to porn online when they aren’t even looking for it.

The majority of the pornography consumed is accessed on mobile devices. An estimated 31 percent of teens own smartphones, and a smartphone without restrictions amounts to an X-rated theater in your pocket.

Among youth, it is not a matter of merely consuming porn but of becoming porn. Kim Goldman, director of the Santa Clarita Valley Youth Project, says, “Of course girls want to emulate this stuff. Girls talk about feeling like they have to be like what they see on TV.” Conservative estimates say that about 20 percent of sixteen-year-olds and 30 percent of seventeen-year-olds have received a sext (a sexually explicit text message) on their cell phones. Teens use apps such as Snapchat, Kik, WhatsApp, or iDelete to send nude images of themselves. Often teens will use Tumblr and Facebook to leak sexts of their ex-boyfriends or ex-girlfriends — a phenomenon called “revenge porn”.

I heard Joanna Angel, owner of the porn company Burning Angel, say that she doesn’t have to coach the young actors doing porn films for the first time. Having indulged in porn since youth, she said, boys and girls come to the porn set ready to perform. They enter their relationships ready to perform too. Pornography is powerful sex education. One study that surveyed teens suggests that the more often young people seek online porn, the more likely they are to have a “recreational” attitude about sex. Among young men who watch porn, 53 percent say that porn has “inspired” them.

In the face of such an overwhelming trend among youth, do parents have any hope of protecting their children?

First, as parents, we should not allow the trends to cloud our understanding of the role we play. We are not responsible in the short term for every child on the planet. We are responsible for our own children. All the grim statistics should not paralyze us into inactivity.

To help our children to grow up in a pornified world, we must take the double-pronged strategy of both protecting their minds and preparing their character.

Protecting Their Minds

Beginning when your children are very young, think holistically about media choices and access in your home. You must be shrewd about all the media your kids consume. Remember, pornography exists on a spectrum of media options. A report from the American Psychological Association states, “Virtually every media form studied provides ample evidence of the sexualization of women, including television, music videos, music lyrics, movies, magazines, sports media, video games, the Internet, and advertising.”

You must be the media gatekeepers and never be passive when it comes to the media choices your children make. Watch TV and movies with your children. Know what magazines they are reading and what websites they visit. Be vocal about your values, and ask critical questions. “Is a woman’s true value bound up in how she looks?” “Did you notice that this advertisement is drawing attention to her sex appeal?” Give your children the language to question the values that are being pushed through sexual images. If you don’t like a certain TV show, movie, or piece of music, tell your children why and then be clear about your expectations.

Some kind of Internet filtering and monitoring is an absolute must. Make this your personal rule: if I am not willing to monitor it, I will not provide it or allow it. This rule should go for you as well: if you install monitoring or filtering software on computers, tablets, and phones that your children use, do the same for yourself — with modified settings so that you can get to the places online you need to go to. This models accountability for your kids.

For a while, I worked for a wonderful software company called Covenant Eyes, and I saw firsthand from the customers the value of raising kids with accountability. Especially when kids are young, strict filtering is a must, but as they get older, you should hold your kids accountable for where they go online as you loosen the filtering restrictions. Notice that the focus here should be on accountability, not on spying. Accountability means that your teens know that their online footprints are being tracked. You aren’t trying to catch them red-handed. If kids grow up in a home where tracking isn’t a punitive measure but simply part of the culture of the home, they are far more likely to embrace it.

Children should be prepared from a young age to deal with porn exposure. Even when all the protective measures are in place in your own home, your child is only as safe as the locker room at school — where kids are walking around with cell phones full of hard-core material. Train your child from a young age how to react when porn appears.

For young children, there’s a fantastic read-aloud book called Good Pictures Bad Pictures. Author Kristen Jensen does a wonderful job of warning children about the existence of pornography without provoking needless curiosity. The book presents kids with a simple plan for how to react if they see pornography.

For all children and teens, there must be media limits in the home. Don’t even make secrecy an option. Cell phones should be monitored and filtered and should stay out of bedrooms at night. (And if your teen says that he uses his phone as an alarm clock, remember that stores still sell alarm clocks and go buy one.) Again, if these rules are established early, they will not be seen as disciplinary but as wise principles by which your family operates.

Preparing Their Character

Protective measures are important, but they are not the most important. In the end, we are raising future adults, not just kids. We are raising young men and women who will eventually leave home and enter a world without filters. It is vital that we prepare them by fortifying their character.

Sex Education

Teaching kids about sex might sound toe curling to some parents, but if we neglect to be involved in our children’s sexual maturation, we will be leaving a massive void that promoters of pornography will be only too eager to fill.

Sex education, whether we like it or not, begins early. From a young age, children discover and explore their sexual identity and notice the basic physical differences in the opposite sex. Even when your children are young, you can communicate with them about the dignity and the value of their bodies. Teach your children the names of body parts and the importance of honoring their bodies and the bodies of others through modesty and privacy.

Age six in many countries marks a significant shift in a child’s life as he begins to spend more time in school around peers, and it is in this setting that children are often exposed to misinformation about sex. Additionally, around the age of six or seven, children enter a new stage of cognitive development, when they begin to reason with logic and imagination. They become more aware of the world around them, and their intellectual curiosity begins to grow. Also around this age, a child’s adrenal glands begin to mature, which leads to the production of natural sexual steroids in the body. Because of these factors, this is a perfect age for parents to begin having more formal conversations with their children about specific sexual topics, such as how life begins. It is also a time to give warnings about sexual predators.

During the middle childhood years, parents should teach children about the nature and the purpose of sex — most of all, its power and beauty. For some parents this might seem absurd. What young child can really understand these adult topics? The point of this education is not to overwhelm children with titillating information but to impress upon them the goodness of sex when it is expressed with mutual love and affection in marriage.

During this time, make sure to draw a contrast between the goodness of marital love and the wrongness of exploiting another’s body. You don’t have to look far for examples. The checkout aisle at the grocery store will suffice — every magazine cover explodes with vibrant displays of scantily clad men and women. Simply tell your children, “Do you see the woman in this photo? Someone has paid her to show off her body to the world to attract people to buy this magazine, but we know that the human body is not meant to be turned into an object like this.”

As kids get older, it is vital for parents to have conversations about body image and specific sexual behaviors. Parents must become unflinching realists and prepare themselves for candid conversations.

Once I gave a talk to a group of parents about sex education. While the overwhelming response to the talk was positive, some parents said they felt very uncomfortable with my using words such as “penis” and “vagina” in a public setting. I wanted to say, “No wonder you don’t talk to your kids about sex. You can’t even listen to anatomical words in room full of adults who have gathered to talk about sex.” If this is you, I tell you with the utmost compassion: please overcome this inhibition. Children and teens need to see that their parents are reliable sources of knowledge about sex, which means that conversations about these matters should be considered normal in the home.

Please don’t mistake my brevity on this subject for ignorance about the fear parents feel over this issue. I know parents often are afraid of saying too much too soon. Sadly, this often means that they end up saying too little too late.

Modeling Love

The sad reality is, children are sexualized because of adults. Adults are the ones who own multimillion-dollar advertising companies. Adults are the ones who buy and sell the bodies of others.
