love the fact that my sister is the kind of person who is both a minor impulse shopper, and also someone who is easily tempted by “fancy” or “odd” foods like pomegranates and dates and chocolate ants and fried grasshoppers and specialty olives and candies and cheeses or those whole foods veggies that not even the people at the register can identify. BUT she is also very much a meat and potatoes milk chocolate kind of person. the only vegetable she consistently eats is the carrot. there’s exactly one type of spaghetti sauce she likes. wheat bread is too exotic. off-brand cereal is intolerable. recently she was very excited because she tried a new juice (tart cherry) that she actually likes. when i saw a “new juice she likes” i mean she now likes exactly one juice. so you can see that she does not actually end up liking many new things. HOWEVER. the reason she feels secure to test new tastes is because i am the opposite kind of person. i like basically everything i try. i can list the things i do not like right now. celery. grapefruit. dill relish. sauerkraut. done. that’s it. everything else i can at least put into the “meh it’s okay” category.
#i get so many tasty treats that no one else in the house will eat when i'm not looking#honestly it's also worth the experimentation for moments when she finds something she actually likes#since she has such picky taste#getting to add something new to the list of things she likes is always a big win#like this tart cherry juice is basically the only juice she will drink#i think she likes like one other juice#and it's a specific cranberry/pomegranate juice or something that she struggles to find#she thought she would like an actual pomegranate due to liking the juice#but she did not. which i why i have 2 pomegranates to snack on#i'm not sure if her boyfriend or my dad would consider trying one#but i am pretty sure the amount of effort involved would scare them off#so no worries there#i also have dark chocolate kit kats (the dark chocolate aspect is still a No for her)#dates#and home-toasted pumpkin seeds#she might give the pumpkin seeds another shot later with a different seasoning and less toasting#but this batch is mine#so lots of snacks yum#love living with adventurous picky eaters#being the dumpster raccoon version of a human person#altho i am trying to curb my habit of eating things out of garbage bins#which is a real problem i have#i meant the raccoon thing seriously#being autistic has gifted me with the trait of not realizing things are socially unacceptable#until someone informs me that i need to get out of the fountain please#or that you can't just nap places#my main problem is that a lot of these rules don't make sense at all to me so i have a hard time being convinced to follow them#so when i do curb itself it is less like 'wow i will not play in this fountain because that would be silly and embarrassing#and probably illegal. no one told me this. i just knew it in my gut.'#and more like 'it would be so fun and completely harmless to play in this fountain. unfortunately

Executive Dysfunction Study Tips
(compiled by us, for us; not a comprehensive list by any means, just the ones that work well of our brain specifically)
dress in a Nice Outfit for the Aesthetic. Studying in slacks and a button-down or knit sweater or similar with a mug of tea has completely different vibes (and much more productive ones) than studying in pajamas, even if the clothes aren’t as comfortable. Besides, the faster we get work done, the faster we can change into Comfy Clothes and relax.
in a similar vein, Beverage + Studying Music. Our go-to is corn tea and the LoZ ocarina of time soundtrack. lyrical music is fine for doing calculations, but for essays its instrumental only since the lyrics can fuck with the writing process.
make that grid of everything you need to do from this post, with Check Boxes next to each thing for Checking Things Off (or you can cross them out if that's more satisfying). Also gives an order and instruction for Starting The Thing which is usually the hardest part.
Imitate School Environment with “periods”, AKA studying for 40 minutes with a 5-10 minute “passing period” in-between, in which getting up and walking around is required. do not do “fun stuff” (reading/YouTube/etc) during passing period, or getting brain back on task will be Hell. our brain works best with a clear structure. Also, Set Alarms.
SNACKS!! snacks that are crumb free and don’t disturb the working process are best. I like pumpkin seeds, smoked salmon, apple/pear/peach/etc slices, cheese, and similar. washed bowls of fruit (grapes, cherries, strawberries, etc) make my fingers wet every time I eat them which is inconvenient, and I can't eat most junk foods for allergy/health reasons (+ grease, cheese dust, etc are similarly impractical)
from this post, “make timelapses on your phone of u doing your work” providing the exact amount of Nervous Energy from being “watched” to be productive, without the anxiety of being criticized from having someone actually watch you. For an extra kick, actually post them to YT.
have Separate Windows open for studying vs for fun stuff. I usually have three windows open on my laptop at all times – one for YT/reading (relaxing stuff), one for studying, and one for writing.
set a Consistent Time To Work and Time To Stop Working, because brain stop working late at night when get tired, but brain also no work as soon as we get home from class, because we’re exhausted and need to take a break + eat first.
in a similar vein, have a Work Time Ritual to get brain in the mood. Do the same thing every time its time to work so that you can pavlov yourself. For example, having a glass of water and and doing five jumping jacks, taking a shower, or getting changed into Studying Clothes. ADHD brain hates Transition Between Activities and also Starting Task so make it fun or relaxing.
finally and most important!!!! sleep well, eat well, and when its time to stop working (NOT when work is done, but when its Time To Stop), take a break and do something relaxing. Work on hobby or lie in bed and read fanfiction. We don’t work past 10:00PM and we aren’t out of bed past 11:00PM. aint nothing going to get done if your body isn’t in a shape to get it done. As a system, sometimes we can see the body as a tool/instrument/machine separate from the mind/identity/personality, and you gotta keep that shit well-maintained or its gonna break down on you and you’ll have to take it to the repair shop.

hi, i'm currently potted plant witching as well (just planted my first crop of veggie/herb/flower seeds & got some more containers & soil today for more planting this weekend) and i would love to know more about your garden this year; would you be willing to outline your plans? any special herbs or projects? Thanks!! <3 love your blog!
🌿🌿🌿 HYPERFIXATION ACTIVATED. 🌿🌿🌿
OH I HAVE SO MANY PLANS, LET ME TELL YOU.
This is the first year that Ragnar and I are doing actual work and sweat equity with the yard at our new place. Last year things were just too chaotic and we didn't have the time or the energy to do much of anything. We trimmed occasionally and I harvest some wild plants, but that was about it.
This year, it's Go Time.
Last weekend, I finally busted out the gorgeous barrel pots we got for Christmas and spent my April market earnings on potting soil, garden tools, and seedlings. When we lived in the apartment, I had a pretty hefty window garden with herbs and flowers and a few vegetables, so I'm eager to recreate that in an outdoor space where the plants can really thrive. (I mean, I grew cherry tomatoes and three kinds of peppers in 10" pots indoors and they got pretty big, so I can only imagine being outdoors will go even better with fresh air and rain and pollinators.)
The potted garden has Napoli tomatoes, poblano and cayenne peppers, green sage, and rosemary, along with something I've never tried growing before - blueberries! I'm planning to add additional pots and more herbs later on, but I felt like this was a really good start. If I can manage it, I want to grow a huge planter of nothing but spinach and sweet basil so I can make pesto this summer.
We've also started clearing and tilling a space out in the yard proper for a raised-bed garden. Nothing too big or ambitious, just something we can try some larger veggies in. We're hoping to try the Three Sisters model with hybrid corn, snap peas, green beans, and kabocha pumpkins. I was also hoping to put in napa cabbage, but there are quite a lot of slugs in the yard when it rains, so perhaps not. I'm toying with the idea of planting some late crops for fall and winter harvests as well. I have sugarplum visions of strings of peppers and braids of garlic hanging in our kitchen with many jars of preserves and sauce in the pantry.
We might also try some other fruits if things go well, maybe raspberries or grapes, but that's more of a Next Summer project. The fence and the ground around it needs some work first and we don't want to overdo things the first year. (I'd really love to put in a little serviceberry tree, but that might be pushing things a bit with regard to space.)
There's also a side garden that's in need of some TLC where I'm vaguely tossing around the idea of climbing flower vines (clematis or morning glory or trumpet flower maybe? something local) and maybe some ground cover in the form of periwinkle. There's also a downspout that really needs a rain barrel, so that's next on the list.
There are sections of the yard that we've deliberately left wild as well, hoping to encourage native plants and pollinators. The clover patches are massive and produce lots of four-leafers and blossoms, so the bees are having a field day. There's also wild dogbane sprouting up now that the vetchweed is cleared and wild plantain (aka white man's foot) starting to come in along the walkway. If I have my druthers, I'll be planting more wildflowers this summer.
Have some pictures and tell me about your garden!

hm. random things wreath likes perhaps
BWAH ALRIGHT!!
pre cal. not much!! he likes fiction books and sweet foods but other than that he cant think of anything. he probably does like more things though its just a deep-seated issue for him. for specifics: they always like pumpkin pie its his favorite, and. yeah. finnish desserts they also make due to hateno and he’d also like those a lot! piparkakku and pannukakku (gingerbread and pancakes) he likes as well. uhm. i should note i am not finnish so any finlanders out there if i butcher anything. im sorry…. anyways! fiction books arent just legends of past games for clarification he’d like ones that really dont have anything to do with tloz. if chicory a colorful tale was an ip/book in this universe they’d like it a bit!! also horse fact magazines and cookbooks. he loves those and never reads them after he gets them <3
post cal ..!! you know if this was like. my interpretation of normal botw i’d say the issue from the above paragraph would get better! but uh!! here it actually gets worse. they still love pumpkin pie and food and horse facts however. its getting harder and harder for him to remember what he does genuinely like, + things he Would like start to get stale or dont feel fun anymore like. for example horse facts again. he’ll always like food but other than that he’d have trouble naming most other things. it all just Exists to him. unfortunately going outside does Not fix him no matter how beautiful and wondrous it is
however i shant leave it at that….. while he might not be able to list it he still does like things sort of. he doesnt get excited about these but theyre just Nice to him and nothing more (also realistically he wouldnt care too much about these however pretend this is a parallel universe where this issue doesnt exist and he Would like these!! he still would in this one he just has problems anyways); seeing foxes!! he likes to greet them by spooking them. hes a fan of cooking ingredients and as much as totk sucks i Do like koyins quest (ignoring the romantic implications and the butchering of her character) i think he’d really Really like trading in nuts for milk and collecting them for the cow guy. he’d probably do it even with no milk incentive but thats just the cherry on top. also koyin and him could be slight friends a lot later into the story!! also he likes acorns and seeds and tries to break into them. also i made a whole list of sounds: clippity clops, footsteps on brick pavement, wood chopping board noises, WHEELS ON BRICK PAVEMENT, knife getting stuck in wood or swords etc, clinks of figurines (not hollow and probably like. made up of a gem rather than stone. Heavy clinks), pencil on thin paper on desk. more likes the feel rather than sound. and gear sounds/clicking like guardians. ALSO KEYBOARD NOISES. like the chunky ones i can get a video. zelda also likes these just more mechanical ones rather than soft thonks. also cooking pot noises we cannot forget about those. cutting paper super smoothly by just dragging scissors or a knife feels good and also knife tearing through fabric or specifically a bed mattress also feels good! the sound varies however. alsoalso this made me make a list for zelda because i think she’d more actively like sensory things
if they had a preference for weapons he’d love lynel weapons due to the sheer damage he just would never use them as to not break them. same with robbies ancient sword and other weapons that look cool or have ties to the champions. otherwise he just likes standard one handed sword weapons. pre cal him would honestly like lynel swords More and be really miffed about the master sword only doing 30 damage despite it being a holy sword and people regarding it as this great thing. like it has trouble defeating monsters ganon is going to kill him. i need to play sksw honestly i think he would like fi i just know next to nothing about her besides her being the sword. also he cant hear her Anyways!!

Yearly Garden Review - 2023
1/11/2024
The garden has improved so much over the past year.  I grew, harvested, and learned so much more than I did last year.  And that’s despite the weird weather - this was a very wet, gloomy year in SoCal, even into June and July.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Highlights:
We loved the tulips this year and plan to plant out more chilled bulbs soon.
Surprise potato harvest in bed 2
Bed 3 was so incredibly beautiful in the spring - purple alyssum beneath fresh, green growth.  The alyssum also helped with water retention and attracting beneficial insects.  The soil in bed 3 felt loose and healthy compared to other beds that time of year.
Larger harvests of peppers, eggplants, and so so many tomatoes.  I couldn’t believe how tall the tomato plants grew!  We ate them all the time and they were delicious, especially the Black Cherry.
We cooked and ate more of our harvests.  Delicious omelettes, pasta, soups, and stuffed peppers on Halloween.
Installed ollas - extremely helpful!  Really helps keep water more consistent.
Grew delicious broccoli.  There are side shoots still growing too.  I didn’t realize how big broccoli plants actually get.  Bed 2 looks great still.
Ordered a tea plant.  It’s pretty dead now, but it was nice having a camellia for a bit.
The jasmine bounced back and bloomed a bit!
Got local compost and made my own potting mix
The dragonfruit is still alive, and hopefully will grow more this spring.
Notes for improvement:
I struggled to germinate seeds, both direct sown and started indoors.  The care/watering is hard for me to do consistently.  It was a real shame to kill all the shallot seedlings in particular - I was really hoping to grow some since they’re harder to find in store.
Lots of dead plants.  If I stopped talking about any particular plant in the logbook, it’s because it died.  The rosemary and lavender plants in bed 4 will probably need to be replaced this spring.  A lot of flowers and container plants didn’t make it.  For some reason, sunflowers struggled a lot too.
Aphids, cabbage worms, and rodents.  Barrier protection would probably help a lot, plus more consistent watering.  I did see a good number of ladybugs and larva this year.
Garden fatigue hit at different points in the year, usually when work was stressful or it felt like my garden wasn’t as good as it should have been.  But it helped to remind myself how much better I’ve become since last year, and that it will continue to get better as I gain more experience.
Looking forward to the year ahead, I want to harvest many things in the summer/fall - okra and watermelon for my uncle, more nightshades, onions, pumpkins, and flowers.  I want to try growing on the trellis (I plan to install one more).  Most of the work will happen in March/April - that’s when the cover crops in beds 1 and 3 will be ready to turn in and transplant time for all the summer crops.
I’m currently using the wintertime to take a break, only checking the garden once a week or so.  While I could grow a winter garden in my zone, I find I’m very lazy on cold mornings, and having a season of rest is important to me symbolically.
I think I have a solid foundation of skill and experience to build on, so I hope to have a very productive garden this year.  We’re also supposed to have another wet season coming up. So we’ll see how that affects things.  Very fitting for Year of the Dragon!

👻 - Do they believe in ghosts? Demons? The supernatural? Do they have any stories of seeing the unusual and strange?
Artisan isn't sure if he believes in ghosts or if that's the delusions, going to be FULLY real with you. In your own words "are the demons a manner of speech or actual demons?" thats him. as such yes he has stories, but he's not sure if they're real, so he doesn't share them.
🤡 - What are they dressing as for trick-or-treating or parties? What costumes have been their favorite?
He doesn't usually attend either? When he joined the Protocol though, someone put some cat ears on him since he didn't have a costume and that was it really.. He doesn't own costumes?
👽 - Would they ever spend the night in a haunted house/hotel/place? Do they visit haunted attractions like mazes or scare house? Who would they go with?
I think Artisan would enjoy it up until the Demons:tm: in his brain attack. He'd much prefer attractions to staying in a haunted place cause there's less risk with his psychosis. Someone probably asks him, and he probably agrees.
🎃 - What are some of their Halloween traditions? Do they cook pumpkin seeds after carving pumpkins? Do they host a party?
He likes carving pumpkins! He makes very intricate designs :)
🖤 - They're with their significant other or a group of best friends. What are they dressing up as?
Whatever fits the theme, honestly. He do b like a blank slate, just put him in anything. He'll look good. (he'd make a hot ass vampire)
🍬 - Do they have a favorite piece of candy? Do they prefer cherry, strawberry, or black licorice? Do they like mini bars or king sized bars?
Strawberry licorice! King sized bars, ofc. And his favourite candies are Eiffel Apple Bon Bons. But he likes any apple flavoured candies really.
🫀 - What are their favorite horror movies or shows to watch to get into the spooky season?
the SAW movies or the Collector movies, or both. The more gorey the better.
Tumblr media
👻 - Do they believe in ghosts? Demons? The supernatural? Do they have any stories of seeing the unusual and strange?
He is literally a God. I would hope Ay believes in the supernatural... He IS the strange and unusual stories.
🤡 - What are they dressing as for trick-or-treating or parties? What costumes have been their favorite?
His favourite costume was when he dressed up as Io. But in general he dresses in the slutty version of normal costumes.
👽 - Would they ever spend the night in a haunted house/hotel/place? Do they visit haunted attractions like mazes or scare house? Who would they go with?
Ay would fully drag Corvus to a haunted hotel for a ~fun~ night. don't be such a stick in the mud, Corvus... Anyways for haunted attractions he usually goes with Koga though! They have fun scaring other attendees.
🎃 - What are some of their Halloween traditions? Do they cook pumpkin seeds after carving pumpkins? Do they host a party?
He doesn't really have any? He likes to go out??
🖤 - They're with their significant other or a group of best friends. What are they dressing up as?
The slutty version of Gomez Addams. yes I know Gomez is already slutty, but even SLUTTIER.
🍬 - Do they have a favorite piece of candy? Do they prefer cherry, strawberry, or black licorice? Do they like mini bars or king sized bars?
He doesn't like super chewy candies cause of his fangs, so no licorice for him. But he LOVES coffee flavoured chocolate... mmm..
🫀 - What are their favorite horror movies or shows to watch to get into the spooky season?
Pet Semetary.
Tumblr media
👻 - Do they believe in ghosts? Demons? The supernatural? Do they have any stories of seeing the unusual and strange?
He's literally not human. Does that count as unusual and strange? He doesn't necessarily believe in demons or anything but he KNOWS the supernatural to some extent exists.
🤡 - What are they dressing as for trick-or-treating or parties? What costumes have been their favorite?
Honoré probably wouldn't dress up unless forced to, tbh. When he was younger though he did dress up as Kevin one year, he was very cute.
👽 - Would they ever spend the night in a haunted house/hotel/place? Do they visit haunted attractions like mazes or scare house? Who would they go with?
Yeah but it wouldn't be different from staying anywhere else? He'd LOVE haunted houses though, or scare houses in general. Giggles every time someone tries to scare him. The actors have a running bet on who can scare him. Nobody ever wins the bet though. (He gets 20$ at the end) he'll either go alone or with Tesla if she's free cause she's a lil wuss wuss
🎃 - What are some of their Halloween traditions? Do they cook pumpkin seeds after carving pumpkins? Do they host a party?
Again somebody who doesn't really have any! But he's happy to participate in other peoples' traditions and what they would like to do :)
🖤 - They're with their significant other or a group of best friends. What are they dressing up as?

Seed Starting for Beginners
I originally made this in 2018 or 2019 when I was doing in-person gardening classes, and then updated it to do online classes in 2020. It has a lot of information, but some specifics are for my region. I highly encourage you to connect with your local extension office if you're in the US, and if you're not in the US, can you tell me the equivalent so I can help direct people there?
Seed Starting for Beginners
https://tinyurl.com/seedstarting2020
Seed Basics:
Anatomy: seeds basically consist of seed leaves (aka cotyledons), an embryo, and a seed wall. The cotyledons are food storage, and usually the first leaves that emerge and photosynthesize*. Seeds are dormant, but they are still alive and they are still exchanging gas (breathing) and using up energy stores. Ideally, you will store your seeds somewhere cold and dry. The colder and drier a seed is kept, the slower it’s metabolism, and the more vigorously it will sprout once conditions are correct. I keep my seed packets in a closed glass jar with a silica packet in my freezer. If you want to nerd out, here’s a link to a pretty famous seed vault, where seeds are kept below 0 degrees fahrenheit: https://www.croptrust.org/our-work/svalbard-global-seed-vault/
Sprouting/germinating/breaking dormancy: For most vegetables, all that is needed for seeds to sprout is warmth and moisture. Some will germinate better in the dark, some will germinate better with light (the package will tell you what is needed). For fruits, herbs, and flowers, sometimes they will need additional steps, such as cold stratification, or breaking the seed wall.
Basics of Seed Starting:
Step one is to decide what you want to grow- vegetables, herbs, flowers? (This year, I bet more people are interested in the veggies than the flowers)
Important questions:
What do I actually (want to) eat? (Ie, don’t just grow radishes because they’re easy- will you actually eat/enjoy it?). What would I eat more of if it weren’t so expensive? Make a list.
What grows well here? What Hardiness/heat/climate zone are you in? Do you have microclimates to account for? What are they? Connect with your local extension office to find out what grows well where you are and keys to success
For maritime Western Washington:
The “Easiest for beginners” list: arugula, beets, bok choi, garlic, kale, lettuce, mustard greens, peas, pumpkins (look for a short days to maturity and feed a lot), purslane, squash both winter and summer (see pumpkins), swiss chard, tomatillos, currant, cherry & pear tomatoes (any tomato that has about 70 or less days to maturity), potatoes, radishes (but do you really enjoy eating them, or are you just growing them because they’re one of the quickest crops?), and yes, zucchini.
For ornamentals: Nigella, calendula, cosmos
The “Yeah, you can do that, just takes a bit more effort” list: broccoli, cabbage, carrots, onions, collards, corn, cucumbers, green beans, leeks, roma and plum tomatoes
Moneywort, morning glory (the annual kind!!!), sunflowers, perennials that need a stratification period
The “oh, so you want a challenge and to cry tears of frustration” list: cauliflower, brussels sprouts, eggplant, okra, melons/watermelons, peppers, beefsteak tomatoes.
Dahlias, and more.
For your first year, I would suggest focusing on the easier plants, and hold off on the more challenging plants until you have more experience. However, it’s not like I did that.
If they are on the “Tears of Frustration” list, they usually either need lots of fertility, or more warmth than we get here in western Washington state. If you’re not in a Pacific Northwest Maritime climate, your plant lists will look different. Some, like brussels sprouts are fussy- eg, they need extra fertility, and if the weather is not right they won’t work. For example, if buds start forming when the weather is warm or the fertility isn’t correct, they’ll be loose and leafy instead of nice tight heads.
Step two: Figure out when to start your seeds:
First, check the seed packet/website description and find your last frost date. Some plants, like broccoli, have a wide general time range to plant them in, but some varieties are meant for spring, or summer, or to overwinter. It’s best to get the specific variety’s information if possible.
If not that, then using a seed starting calculator like Johnny’s is next best.
Or, go to a regional planting chart like Tilth’s. Or find your local extension office, they probably have a planting calendar.
Keep track of which ones are sown indoors, sown directly, and when the switch happens. For example, you can sow cucumbers a week or two before your last frost indoors, or a week after directly into the ground.
Consider the “winter sowing” technique. Basically, sowing seeds in little cloches, and letting the seeds come up when they will. Makes very sturdy plants, might not get as early as a start.
Step Three: How?
Containers: Please use standard plastic tray, newspaper pots, peat plugs, used food containers, etc. that have a decent amount of space and adequate drainage.
Why not egg cartons/eggshells? Because they a) do not have enough space for seeds to do much more than sprout and b) the egg cartons tend to dry soil out very quickly.
Medium: Seed starting mix, potting soil, whatever, do NOT use garden soil without killing the weed seeds first. If you use a seed starting mix, keep in mind that it won’t have enough fertility to support the seedlings for very long. It is meant to be used to germinate seeds, and then have those seedlings transplanted into a richer mix to grow on. Also, I recommend NOT using coffee grounds as part of your seedling mix, because they inhibit germination.
Which do well with transplant, which do not: (paper pots are great for those that don’t like transplanting)
Take well to transplanting: brassicas (think broccoli family), nightshades (tomato family), leafy greens
Fussy and need help to transplant well: Squash, cucumbers, melons, etc
Just don’t: carrots, beets, other root crops.
If they don’t transplant well, focus on direct sowing.
Light: Give them as much as possible, a south facing window (assuming you're in the northern hemisphere), or indoor grow lights. If you’re using a light, look for one that says full spectrum, daylight, or says it is over 5000 kelvin.
The warmer you keep the seedlings, the brighter the light they need. Warmth determines their metabolism, and light is their fuel/food, so you can keep them from etoliating/stretching out by keeping them at cooler temperatures. Slower growth at the same light intensity yields sturdier seedlings. Keeping seedlings at cooler temperatures can help you get stocky, sturdy, vigorous plants. This is a really big key, so pay attention. A lot of people struggle with weak seedlings that have stretched out in their search for light, and that can be avoided if you match temperature to light levels.
Fill your container(s). Tamp down soil- movement of water depends on capillary action, which depends on the soil particles being close enough together. Consult package on depth, or use 3x diameter of seed. Plant. Water. Wait.
Watering: keep evenly moist, do not let them dry out. Not so much that it’s soggy though- so after you water they shouldn’t be sitting in a puddle of water an hour later. I prefer to bottom water. To do that, put your container in a tray of water, and let it soak up. If you’ve tamped it down properly, you’ll see the surface moisten.
So they’ve sprouted, now what?
If you’re using a peat or commercial seed starting mix, it likely doesn’t have enough fertility to support growth beyond the first few true leaves. That means that as soon as you see true leaves coming out, you have two choices: either use a water-soluble fertilizer, or gently transfer the seedlings to a more fertile soil mix. Those of you who struggled with your plants not growing, this is the key: provide fertility.
The big day: Transplanting!
Harden off first! The wee ones have been indoors, in very gentle conditions, and need to adapt to the outdoors environment before you transplant them out there. If you don’t, the cold can harm them, and they can also get sunburnt. Acclimate them by putting them outdoors for an hour the first day, a few hours the next, gradually increasing the amount of time they spend outdoors until a week or so has passed. DO NOT transplant out frost tender plants (nightshades, squashes, pumpkins, cucumbers, etc) until the danger of frost has passed (unless you have a tunnel or greenhouse).
Transplanting, general: Water plants well the day before. Pick a moderate time of day if it’s been hot. Prepare the hole- bigger than the pot was, and deeper if tomato or brassica. If it’s one that needs extra fertility, thoroughly mix in some compost (I use one to two shovelfuls of rich compost). Loosen the plant in the pot by gently squeezing or tapping, make sure the roots aren’t circling (if they are, gently tease them apart), and put in hole. Back fill hole and press down. Water thoroughly.
For sensitive plants: all the above, but “mud in” the plant, that is, water enough that water sits on the surface for at least 15 seconds. Cover- if it’s hot, a cardboard box or light sheet to shade, if it’s cool a bucket to hold in extra warmth.
Success through the summer:
Provide fertility: some plants, like potatoes and kale likely won’t need much additional fertility beyond what’s already in your soil. Some crops, like corn, squash, and broccoli need a lot more fertility to make a decent crop. Either way, if you notice your plants aren’t growing very well, it’s likely a matter of fertility- or watering.
I prefer to provide this fertility through composts, cover crops, and mineral supplements. If you’re not organic, you can just use a balanced fertilizer. Whether it’s organic or not, it’s generally a good idea to follow the package directions for best results. It’s just as easy to over fertilize and burn your plants as it is to under fertilize and get stunted growth.

So I've been writing happily about gardening, but this year was in fact, different than the others. This spring, I've been hit with bad phases of being mentally ill, and even as I started the year excited about plants, it didn't stick. I remember my first year starting plants; I'd spend hours just gazing at them lovingly, finding it soothing for my anxiety. This year, I barely managed to pay attention enough to water them. A part of my transplants even dried off because I was not watering correctly, but I had planted extra, so it wasn't a problem. I still raised the biggest volume of plants than any year before.
Since I rely on my plants to feed me, I kept being worried that my lack of energy, enthusiasm and interest would result in poor harvests, and poor year for eating. This wasn't something I could afford. I kept delaying transplanting first plants to the garden, some because of chronic exhaustion, some due to the bad weather, but then it got very warm very fast, and I couldn't delay it any longer. It didn't feel as it usually does. I wasn't excited; in fact, I barely managed to get it done and came home to rest as fast as I could. I only came again to the garden a week later, when I could gather enough energy to get myself there, and by that time, tons of weeds showed up, the soil needed mulching, it was time to do a lot more work, and I was overwhelmed and worried. I used to come to the garden every single day in the spring, and do this work little by little, so I wouldn't even notice the strain. Now, there was a lot to do, and I didn't feel like doing much at all.
It turned out, I shouldn't have worried. Having less energy to relocate to gardening would have been a problem in my first, and second year of gardening, but at this time, I'm a 4th year gardener. And 4th year gardeners have experience and knowledge that allows them to grow more food, even when they don't have as much time or energy for it all. 4th year gardeners can grow more than one person's worth of food.
I got to the garden one day, and spontaneously started doing one thing after another, until I was there for 4 hours straight, taking care of all of the weeds, planting everything that needed to get planted, mulching the entire garden with recently mowed grass and fertilizing whatever looked a bit stuck. The garden started growing so fast, and so vibrant, I suddenly found myself bringing home spinach, swiss chard, leeks, lemon balm, chives and celery, and that helped a lot with my enthusiasm. Next time, I planted all of the beans, green beans, squash, fixed the garden a new fence, and proceeded to work on the field, planting ground cherries, mystery squash and potatoes. And I realized, I had actually done all of the things in time for them to be done, and I didn't waste my efforts for the things I knew wouldn't work. Last year, I'd been planting so many beans, garlic, pumpkins and carrots onto the field, and none of it worked at all, so this time, I stuck to the ones that worked the best – zuchinni and cucumbers. I made sure to plant beans and carrots in my garden instead, where they grew successfully.
My garden chores now are just to bring some more sticks, plant the rest of the tomatoes and peppers, wait for the squash to germinate and plant it apart, watch over what plants are going to seed in order to collect the seeds, water the peppers when the rain stops coming. That's not a lot of work! I feel like the enthusiasm came back to me as soon I figured things will actually work out and it's not too late to do anything. It's getting so hot, I bet the tomatoes will grow very fast from now on, and I'm looking forward to eating them.

On Dillon Toscano’s first day at GrowGood Urban Farm, located just 20 minutes southeast of downtown Los Angeles, he was put to work building chicken coops. The farm was expecting a delivery of baby chicks, which Toscano was excited about. “We got to see these chickens grow, and that was a whole understanding of farm life for me,” he says, reminiscing.
But as cute as those baby chicks were, covered in a downy white-blonde fuzz, they didn’t offset the amount of work required to build their coops and prepare for their arrival. “It’s not easy work, growing, plowing, it was very humbling,” says Toscano. “It was sweaty work.”
Still, Toscano came back, day after day, for nearly two years. He planted seeds and harvested their fruit. He raked, plowed, weeded and plucked until his shirts were soaked with sweat. He stood barefoot in the gardens, listening to the subtle sounds of the birds and insects and plants around him. Eventually, he started doing yoga in the garden and attending counseling sessions around a huge tree while sitting comfortably in its shade. He tuned in to the rhythms and energy of the sun rising and setting, finding peace as he walked among the plants.

GrowGood isn’t your average farm, and Toscano is not your average farm hand.
At GrowGood, located in Bell, California, farm hands and volunteers are all residents of the Salvation Army shelter across the street. About 30 feet from the gates of the 1.5-acre urban farm, the shelter houses hundreds of people, and it feeds them with food grown right outside their door. The farm offers counseling sessions in the garden, and the farm tries to introduce and tailor programs to what their residents want. That’s how Toscano found himself doing yoga and meditation in the middle of a lettuce patch—and loving it.
The small farm has 72 fruit trees planted, as well as a wide variety of produce. Salad greens are popular, along with peppers to snack on. Okra, corn, zucchini, cucumbers, eggplant, carrots and cherry tomatoes each have their own little areas. In the winter, the farm produces kale and collard greens, which grow next to pumpkin and squash patches. But even more impressive than the crops the farm grows is the impact they have on the people who harvest them.
“Even just taking the carrot out of the ground and washing it off [is impactful],” says farm manager Francis River. “[People] really appreciate those moments, because it’s kind of this special moment where some people have never pulled a carrot out of the ground and have been able to eat it.”
Something as simple as picking a peach or an orange from a tree can light a spark in visitors to the farm. “We have several people who really want to get into tree care, because they just have this experience where they’re harvesting straight from the tree,” says River.
For farm hands such as Toscano, the farm has provided a unique opportunity for healing. There, he learned a technique called grounding, where he makes physical contact with the earth below him. “At least two hours, minimum, a day,” Toscano advises. “That was the goal, and it really started helping with my recovery.”
Like many of the roughly 500 residents who live or attend programs at the shelter, Toscano found himself at the gates of GrowGood while trying to detox from years of drug addiction. Knowing that other paths to sobriety hadn’t worked for him, Toscano was an eager farm hand, wanting to “take advantage of everything” the farm had to offer, including an addiction recovery program.

That’s what farm manager River likes to hear. When volunteers from the shelter come to GrowGood, he’s excited to welcome them, teach them the basics of farm management and then watch as they find little pockets of transformation through plowing, planting and harvesting. One of the popular programs the farm offers is called Food For Life. “It basically guides participants through gentle yoga in the farm, as well as meditation, breathing exercises and a kind of an open discussion about where they are, expressing things that they’re going through,” River explains. “Part of the program is learning to handle anxiety and stress and all these traumas, while they’re also in this little wooded area, surrounded by native plants.”
It’s hard to believe that there could be an urban oasis in the middle of a concrete jungle, but River says the farm really does have a different energy to it. “You can sit down, and not see a telephone pole of a building, and you’re away from the road. You don’t see any cars. It’s a little hidden gem,” he says. “It’s just a safe space where we’re involved with nature and agriculture, but also building this trust and this kind of openness and vulnerability.”
Tumblr media

In the future, River would love to expand the programs offered at the farm. He’s looked into bringing more meditation or yoga coaches on board to lead classes or having chefs host culinary and cooking classes with the fresh produce. During the COVID-19 pandemic, having a safe and open outdoor space has become even more important for River and the volunteer farm hands, and he wants to find ways to help them grow even further. “I would love to be able to get some funding to do more transitional employment programs, where we can actually pay people to work and build up their resume, so then they can help bridge the employment gap for them going forward,” River says. “There’s always projects I’m happy to find and do.”
Those opportunities certainly helped to change Toscano’s life. Since walking onto the GrowGood farm in 2015, he’s left the shelter and opened his own dog boarding and grooming business with his wife. He’s been sober for five years, and he credits much of that to lessons he learned at the farm.
“The way that I’ve been able to [maintain sobriety] is by keeping my program going, making sure I utilize all those things that I took from the farm,” he says.

I saw that anon ask about pancakes and I would actually be really interested in hearing how you make pancakes sufficiently interesting without getting fed up with them- the most adventurous I've ever managed to get is adding blueberries and occasionally substituting applesauce for an egg.
oooooh, pancakes are such a handy food to add stuff to!
basically, if you can cut it into small pieces, you can add it to pancakes
i'm a big fan of cheese, bacon, and/or onion-type vegetables. bell peppers are good, too, or mushrooms. or if you fancy, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, or any sort of nuts are nice, too
just put a bit of oil in a pan, add whatever non-pancake additives you want, sauté a bit, and then pour batter over it until everything is connected to the pancake. the resulting pancakes will break/tear apart far more easily and flipping them can get adventurous, so they won't look as pretty, but they're perfectly tasty
if you prefer them sweet, sliced bananas and grated apples are good additives, as well as most berries (cranberries and red currants may require additional sugar), and presumably any other fruit that goes acceptably well with milk (i don't think any sort of citrus fruit or pineapples would be very tasty, but who knows). if you can be bothered to slice the fruit, same approach of sauté and then pour batter on top works, if you don't want pieces but flavour (or the fruit is unsuitable for slicing like most berries), mix them directly into the batter
and if none of that appeals, once the pancakes are done, you can put so many things on top of them. jam is sometimes neat, as long as you have some with relatively little added sugar, otherwise it gets too sticky-sweet. applesauce is neat, too, as applesauce always is. any sort of fruit compote, though personally, i'm particular to cherry or apricot. sugar and lemon juice, if you want something a bit more simple. cream cheese or creme fraiche with either sugar or some sort of barbecue/grill spice is very tasty, too. basically, if the pancakes are already done, you can treat them like a rather strange slice of bread and just pile things on top of them that appeal. i'd advise against using butter for non-floofy types of pancakes or if you eat them cold, but that's a matter of taste
and the best thing is, you can just raid your kitchen for stuff that seems fun to add to pancakes, and then make a ton of tiny experimental pancakes to see what does and doesn't work, and then you get to eat so many different things that are still the same, so you get all the joy of discovering new foods while still having a back-up plan in case the new food doesn't appeal

Video Game Cooking: Nectar (Hades 2018)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nectar is one of the in-game items Zagreus can collect. By gifting these bottles of golden liquid to other characters, he raises his affinity with them, which in turn gives him powerup items and advances character questlines.
Hades (2018) is a retelling/adaptation of the classical Persephone and Hades mythos. All items, settings, and characters are from classic Greek mythology; Zagreus’ foster mother is the primordial goddess of night. Achilles’ personal questline is about reuniting him with his lover Patrocles. Zagreus has spent his entire life sheltered underground in Tartarus, so he doesn’t know what birds are, or what winter is.
In turn, ‘nectar’ exists in Greek mythology. It’s sometimes interchangeable with ambrosia; both are the legendary foods/drinks of the gods, said to grant immortality to anyone who consumes them, amongst other positive effects. In-game, nectar is the more commonplace counterpart to ambrosia; Zagreus finds nectar as a dungeon drop. But he needs to defeat the champion of Elysium boss to gain a single bottle of ambrosia.
Today, we’re gonna re-create the nectar of Hades (2018) for ourselves! It may be contraband in Hades’ domain, but it’s not like anyone pays attention to that rule, anyways.
Why are we recreating nectar, and not ambrosia? Because there already exists tons of ‘ambrosia’ drink recipes. Maybe not based off of the Hades (2018) version, but there’s nothing new or exciting in making yet another ambrosia drink. Nectar, on the other hand, gives us more room for invention.
Hades (2018) Nectar Recipe  (Makes One Serving)
1 1/3 cups Martinelli's sparkling cider
2 tablespoons orange flower water
1 tablespoon honey
1/4 teaspoon edible gold shimmer powder (make sure it lists all ingredients, and is certified food safe)
A pinch of coarse sea salt
A pinch of lemon zest
A drop of mint extract
The first times Zagreus gifts nectar to npcs, they describe honoring some sort of godhood custom and exchange with him with a ‘keepsake’ - an in-game powerup he can wear. Unlike with gifting ambrosia, their eyes don’t pop out with shock at receiving such a luxurious gift, it’s instead just something nice, even if relatively commonplace. But nectar is still prestigious enough that gifting the actual Olympic gods nectar goes over well.
If ambrosia is the equivalent of Zagreus gifting $30,000,000 Breguet watches to his friends and family, then nectar is the gourmet-wrapped basket of cheese and crackers you see in the ‘gift’ section of the grocery store. Something you spot while on errands, and impulsively buy so you have a hostess gift the next time someone invites you over. It’s a gift borne of societal custom, and implores the giftee to give you something in return, eventually. Everyone from your multimillionaire uncle Poseidon to your humble jailbird neighbor Sisyphus are pleased to receive such a gift, even if they might value its contents differently.
Tumblr media
(In the early-access versions of the game, nectar was ambrosia. The final release wrote ambrosia as the coveted, rare prize you earn after defeating the champions of Elysium. True enough, Zagreus can only find ambrosia after defeating the Elysium boss.)
In original Greek mythology, ‘nectar’ and ‘ambrosia’ aren’t two distinct things. Homer describes nectar as the god’s drink, and ambrosia is the food. But in Sappho’s and Anaxandrides’s poems, it’s the opposite. There’s more recorded mentions of ‘ambrosia’, rather than nectar. Some take this to mean that both nectar and ambrosia can be seen as something both food and drink, like honey.
Both share canonical similarities. Ambrosia and nectar are fragrant foods/drinks, sometimes used as literal perfume by the gods. Makes sense that nectar smells good, if in the AD period we’ve taken the word to mean the sweet stuff within flowers.
Other than its smell, we’ve no canonical information about nectar (other than in the Odyssey, nectar is described as either ‘rose-red’ in color, or in scent). Hades (2018) rendered nectar’s appearance as an opaque, warm gold liquid in a cute little round bottle, wrapped with a ribbon to benefit its ‘gift merchandise’ reputation.
Nobody in Hades (2018) describes the taste/smell of nectar. Ambrosia, on the other hand, is said to be rare ‘vintages’ that you’re guaranteed to like. Sometimes, gifting either results in a cutscene where Zagreus and co. hang out at the lounge, complete with a sound clip of uncorking a bottle and pouring it into a tall glass. You can also see characters drink nectar amongst each other, savoring both the occasion and the taste. Eurydice also offers a ‘Refreshing Nectar’ power up item, which just kinda looks like normal nectar but in a tall glass.
There’s a clear alcohol equivalence. But nobody references drunkeness in-game. Even original classical Greek culture didn’t have a drunk culture like we do; wine was revered, but it was mixed with water to be savored, not to intoxicate oneself. Maybe nobody in-game can get drunk in the first place; everyone’s either an immortal, or a ghost.
Tumblr media
(In my opinion, it’s always a bit weird when videogame characters can nurture deep, trusting relationships purely built upon a system of gifting items. But Hades (2018) does make it clear that Zagreus already has established relationships with most of the cast.)
Ambrosia’s a rare vintage. So what does that make nectar? We need to make something sweet, pleasant, attractive-looking, and also tangibly related to its rarer sibling. So we’re using another liquid that’s distilled and sometimes fermented; apple cider.
A bit of this decision comes from the soundbite of opening up a nectar in the lounge; it’s a thin viscosity with a slight hint of foam, almost sounding like beer. And the color matters too, since different distillations of apple cider can result in different colors, ranging from dark brown to a light, bright gold.
Apple juice, when fermented, can have alcohol contents going from light apple wine, to brandies that have 10-25% alcohol. As a culinary ingredient, its modest fructose content means a higher temperature tolerance, and its citric acid can be used as a brine. It’s a popular ‘new world’ ingredient in cooking and baking.
It’s also an ‘old world’ food. Hades (2018) doesn’t take itself super seriously, with its foil-wrapped gyros and french fries as in-game healing items. But any character/worldbuilding they do have, they keep it consistent.
Zagreus says that Hermes’ symbol “almost looks like a bat wing”, when it’s very clearly a bird wing. Because he’s lived underground his whole life, he doesn’t know what a bird is. Weapons upgraded with the aspect of people like Guan Yu, or King Arthur, are time-bending powers that no one has ever heard of, with hints that these mysterious people live in places with their own gods/mythology. Zagreus catches a trout/bass/sturgeon fish for the first time, and it’s completely foreign to him, but Achilles fondly recalls these Greece-native fish fitting of his Nereid heritage. Characters have discussions about how mortals fear death, despite Thanatos being a gentle god represented by butterflies. There’s no sun, therefore no time, in the underworld. Hades is the god of minerals as well as the underworld, hence gems and diamonds being an in-game loot.
Apples originated in Central Asia. During the Classical Greek era, they would have resembled what we call crabapples; small, hard, sour, cherry-sized. “At the Sammardenchia-Cueis site near Udine in Northeastern Italy, seeds from some form of apples have been found in material carbon dated to around 4000 BCE.”
It implores me to find ingredients that fit the setting, as with my other Video Game Cooking recipes. No pumpkins, no corn, potatoes, chocolate, tomatoes, vanilla. Instead, we have things like almonds, lentils, oranges, honey, garlic, onions (haha, suck it Achilles)
To reflect nectar’s ‘sweet smelling’ trait, we’re using an ingredient common in Persian cooking - and later the French royal court of King Louis; orange flower water. I found mine in my local Asian grocery. It’s a byproduct of making essential oil, and it’s colorless/flavorless, but with a strong aromatic smell that affects any food you mix it with. It’s also a known ingredient in modern day Greece, called anthonero (ανθόνερο).
Tumblr media
(Eeurydice is confirmed to use both nectar and ambrosia as a cooking ingredient, and her food is apparently amazing. Maybe one day, I’ll make another Video Game Cooking recipe based off of her Pom Porridge, or Ambrosia Delights.)
And to really make it look like the food of the gods, we’re adding an ingredient found more and more in swanky bars worldwide; edible glitter powder. Originally, people only used this to decorate baked goods and candies, but come Instagram, people are making these really picturesque cocktails that shimmer rainbow. You gotta be careful when buying these for yourself, though; the tiny tins of decorative edible shimmer power you find at Michaels may not actually be as edible as they claim. I found Bakell-brand Luster Dust at a bake-supply shop. If it doesn’t list its ingredients, or certify itself as FDA-approved, then don’t use it for food.
And since it’s called ‘nectar’, we’re also adding honey. Which has long history of its divine status as a holy food. To take down the intense sweetness a bit, the tinest pinch of sea salt - another holy, pure substance. And to really bring out the brightness of the apples, we’re adding a sprinkle of lemon zest. A tiny drop of mint extract brings a complex depth to the orange flower smell.
To make a glass of nectar; cover the bottom of the glass with mint, lemon, sea salt, honey, and orange flower water. Then, pour the apple cider with the gold shimmer dust together, so that the two mix together a bit, to avoid clumping of the powder. Then you mix the drink a bit, so that the honey, zest, and salt aren’t sitting at the bottom.
It only now occurs to me that this recipe might actually be a rendition of Eurydice’s Refreshing Nectar item, rather than pure nectar itself. But just take my word for it; when you open up a bottle of nectar, you get that whiff of blossoms with the slight coldness of mint, and the sea salt/honey taste goes really well with the apple juice. I imagine that Eurydice’s somehow making a further delicious drink by adding a splash of Bailoni and ice.
Enjoy! Just imagine that you’re hanging out with Zagreus and his three partners, cracking a cold one open over stories about how crazy the surface world is. Did you know that we have machines called computers that instantly relay information all over the world??

[18+ advised ] This is going to be long af. I’m going to do my best to put everything - all my writing on this blog, in one goddamn place, but I make no promises, so forgive me in advance. Below the cut is everything I’ve written and posted, for every single wrestler I’ve written for so far.  If its’ not linked, then I haven’t posted it yet or it’s a placeholder. If it’s bolded/has an m out beside it, it is most definitely mature and only meant for a mature (18+) audience. If there’s an asterisk (*) out beside the title, it belongs to or is part of something else that I have on the blog.
If you want to be on the taglist for my writing, you can find that [here]. If you want to know what I write / how often I write and stuff like that, my faq/about post is [here]
