My Review: The end of a series it's always a bitter-sweet moment and if you loved the characters it may be hard to say good bye. I discovered this series using Netgalley and fell hard for the "strange couple" Ian Frey and Adolphus "Nine Nails" McGray. They're a perfect match in a sort of positivism vs occultism and this differences made them a very effective couple of detective. They're also complex person and there's always a fun side that makes me smile. As this was the final story part of me wanted to read it very fast and part of me was reluctant to say goodbye. I thoroughly enjoyed this twisty and gripping novel, it surprised me and kept me hooked. It's a gothic novel with plenty of humour. We get to know what happened and all the mysteries were solved in a very satisfying way. I loved this series and think it was one the most entertaining in the historical mystery field. I can't wait to read the next book by Oscar de Muriel and I'm sure I won't be disappointed. This gripping and entertaining novel is strongly recommended. The Author; Oscar de Muriel was born in Mexico City where he began writing stories aged seven, and later came to the UK to complete a PhD in Chemistry. Whilst working as a translator and playing the violin, the idea for a spooky whodunnit series came to him and Nine-Nails McGray was born. Oscar has now written four Frey and McGray titles and splits his time between Manchester and Mexico City.

I started on the first book of the Frey and McGray series by @oscardemuriel and it’s been an outright blast! I’d definitely say this is a hidden gem! What initially attracted me was the cover art, because just look at it! GORGEOUS! 😍 After reading the synopsis I was sold (I love me some murder mysteries 🙃). . . The first book is set in 1888. England is living in fear of Jack the Ripper, when all of a sudden a violinist is murdered in his house in Edinburg by a supposed copycat. Through certain circumstances Inspector Frey and Detective ‘Nine-Nails’ McGray end up having to work together in order to catch the killer. . . I’m about 1/3 and have been chuckling all the way through! Ian is stereotypical snobbish Englishman with an inflated ego and a ton of pride. Having him work with the Scottish and rather peculiar Detective McGray makes for a lot of hilariously savage remarks back and forth. Would definitely recommend this one!!

So, it’s been a while…

Hello everyone!

I wish I was here with some better news, but this last year been a rough one. I can’t even remember when I said I was going to start reading ‘Sign of the Devil’ but I know it was a while ago.

So TLDR of it all is last May I lost my best friend of nearly 11 years, my wee bun, Kirby. It was very sudden and not the ending I wanted for him. I also found out that losing him was my first full blown experience of grief (I’m no stranger to losing people, but this was the first one that I felt). On top of all this, I’ve got some sort of sleep issue, it started with me falling asleep on the toilet, and has now progressed to where I can fall asleep anywhere, at work, on the bus, etc, which has made reading difficult, because anything that might relax me, makes me sleepy, and off I go. I’ve also been injuring myself, for example a month ago, fell asleep on the toilet, and fell face first into the stool and bust my mouth open (my teeth nearly went through my lip), I’ve also fallen asleep and called over just walking. The GP thinks is sleep apnea, and I’ve got tests to do etc so we’ll see.

But, finally, I am making a start on book 7. I’ve technically read one page and started to fall asleep (not a testament to the writing ofc).

Also as a side note, I got my dad into the series and he’s now read it all. We’ve been on an ebook binge and we’ve been clearing out our physical books and replacing them.

But here we are, book 7. Of course I shall let you know my thoughts either during or after :)
