This Is the Secret to Weight-Loss Maintenance
If losing weight is hard, the sad reality is that keeping it off can sometimes feel just as hard.
After all, according to a research review from the University of California at Los Angeles, about two-thirds of people who successfully lose weight gain it all back — and often more — within five years after ending their diets.
The operative word there? Ending. “Many people think that when they lose all of the weight that they are ‘done,'” says Bonnie Taub-Dix, R.D.N., author of Read It Before You Eat It. “But, in fact, they are entering a new stage of self-care that requires staying consistent with healthy habits.”
And therein lies the secret to weight-loss maintenance: consistency. After all, if you approached weight loss in a healthy way (no fad diets!), losing weight and keeping it off aren’t all that different, explains Gavin McHale, Winnipeg-based kinesiologist and certified exercise physiologist. Sure, to maintain your weight loss, you’ll you need to eat slightly more so that you’re in a caloric balance rather than a deficit (meaning calories in vs. out are equal), he says. But that’s it.
Luckily, being consistent doesn’t mean being perfect. “If you can aim to meet your goals 90 percent of the time, you will see results,” says Sarah E. Altman, Ph.D., clinical assistant professor in psychiatry and behavioral health at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. “Expecting to meet your goals 100 percent of the time can lead to perfectionistic standards that are typically unattainable and result in feelings of failure.”
When you eat something that’s less-than-healthy or miss a workout, don’t bother calling it a slip-up or thinking that you need to “work off” that donut by doing double-time at the gym to “make up” for it. Just get back on that healthy horse as soon as you can afterward.
The good news: When you’re consistent — with your nutrition, exercise, and overall lifestyle — you end up establishing a new, healthier “normal” for yourself, suggests a comprehensive review of weight-maintenance research published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. It shows that once people have successfully maintained their weight loss for two to five years, their chances of keeping the weight off for the rest of their lives greatly increases.
One of the key findings in this review reveals that the roughly 20 percent of people who successfully maintained their weight loss tended to “catch” themselves when they started having one too many slip-ups (deviations from their new healthy routines) before they regained significant weight.
So, what habits do you need to form now to become part of the 20 percent of successful maintainers — and keep the weight off for the rest of your life? We combed through the research and polled top experts to find out.
6 Habits of People Who Successfully Maintain Weight Loss
  1. Eat Breakfast Every Day
According to the National Weight Control Registry, which follows more than 10,000 people who have lost at least 30 pounds and kept them off, at least 78 percent of successful maintainers eat breakfast every day. Meanwhile, according to Cornell’s new online Global Healthy Weight Registry, 96 percent of people who have always been at a healthy weight are daily breakfast eaters. It appears that, whatever your starting weight, breakfast can help you maintain a healthy one going forward.
Why is it so important to eat soon after you rise? Breakfast — especially one high in protein and/or fiber — is a veritable craving crusher. For instance, in a Journal of the American College of Nutrition study, people who ate fiber-packed oatmeal reported feeling significantly more satisfied and less hungry hours later compared to people who started their days with ready-to-eat cereal.
2. Think Quality, Not Calories
“Counting calories is great to do for a short period so that you gain awareness of what you’re putting into your body,” McHale says. “But once you get a feel for things, you shouldn’t worry about counting calories, and should instead focus on making the food choices you know are going to support your goals.”
That’s in line with Cornell research, which shows that people who are able to maintain healthy weights most often focus on food quality — such as whether a food is whole or processed — rather than calories. After all, if that pint of ice cream says it’s low in fat, that doesn’t mean it’s healthy.
If you’re not sure what or how much you should eat to maintain your weight loss, the Beachbody Portion Fix Eating Plan can clear up the confusion. A simple equation determines your weight maintenance calories (factoring in your daily activity level and exercise routine) so you can find the total daily calorie range you should stick to in order to keep your weight stable. 3. Move in Some Way Every Day
“Everyone should move at least some every day, even if it’s just by going on a 20-minute walk during your lunch break or cycling to work,” says Albert Matheny, M.S., R.D., C.S.C.S., a trainer with SoHo Strength Lab in New York City. It’s important to think of physical activity as something that happens not only in the gym or your living room, but also in daily movements (think: climbing the stairs, carrying heavy stuff, etc.).
That said, full-blown sweat sessions can’t go overlooked, especially when it comes to strength training. Performing regular resistance exercises (with or without weights!) is critical to preventing the loss of lean muscle as you age; this can result in a lower metabolic weight and weight gain through the years. In fact, in one Harvard study that followed 10,500 healthy men over the course of 12 years, those who strength trained for 20 minutes every day gained less age-related abdominal fat compared to those who spent 20 minutes per day doing cardio. 4. Ask for a Hand

But regularly getting that support is equally important when you’re trying to keep it off, according to 2014 research in Public Health Nutrition and Epidemilogy, that found that women who receive social support during their maintenance phase are significantly more likely to be successful compared to those who try to do it on their own.
Consider checking into a healthy-living Facebook group each week, posting your maintenance progress to Instagram daily, or signing up for a group workout class that will help keep you accountable and feeling supported.
5. Keep Tabs on Your Weight
“Losing weight has identifiable perks. You see it in the mirror, you feel it in your energy levels. Weight maintenance is much more difficult because you’re not actually getting a noticeable return on all your work,” Gavin says. “Your success is in not seeing anything change. This makes it much harder to wrap our heads around.”
That’s why it can be so helpful to track your maintenance, either by weighing yourself, regularly trying on one choice pair of jeans, or measuring your body fat percentage. In fact, according to the National Weight Control Registry, 75 percent of people who are able to maintain their weight loss over the long term weigh themselves at least once a week. “Some days you might lose a little weight and on others, your weight might rise,” Taub-Dix says. “But the change never strays too far from that sweet spot — the weight at which you look and feel your best. That’s a weight you should want to hold on to.”
6. Be Honest About What’s Doable Right Now
“You have to be ruthlessly consistent with your habits, so make sure they can fit into your lifestyle. If you try to fit a square peg into a round hole, you’re bound to fall off the wagon when life hits you in the face — and it will,” McHale says. For example, if you’re a nine-to-fiver who’s exhausted at the end of the workday, maybe after-work workouts aren’t the most practical for you, but early morning or lunch-hour sweat sessions can be.
Realize, though, that your lifestyle won’t always be the same and, as your lifestyle changes, it’s OK to adjust how you implement your healthy habits.

Quick Thoughts on the Start of Focus T25
Drew and I decided to kick off the year with a round of this program, plus various fitness adventures. Drew suggested not going right into an extremely intense workout program next, and we had been wanting to check-out a few fitness classes in the area. We are doing this a bit accelerated, doing two weeks of each cycle instead of four, for a total of eight weeks (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Strength Hybrid cycles).
Focus T25 is a Shaun T program from Beachbody. This is how the Beachbody site describes it "Ready for a shock? Turns out longer workouts don't always deliver better results. In fact, major studies show that the first 30 minutes of exercise can be every bit as effective at burning fat as workouts that are twice as long. So when you do a FOCUS T25 workout, you can get an hour's worth of results...but you'll be getting it done in only 25 minutes—so you stay within that optimal, fat-burning zone. It's a full-body workout in 25 minutes. With zero rest. Focus Interval Training works every muscle group in your body—one after the other—then it works it again. It's short. It's sweaty. But after 25 minutes, it's done. No BS...just amazing results."
Like all Shaun T programs, it's pretty heavy on the cardio, though in the Beta cycle you start doing strength workouts with dumbbells, and all along you do a fair amount of bodyweight work. Dysfunctional Parrot has thorough reviews of each cycle as does Dumbbells and Diapers (the cycles are meant to be progressively harder and to build on each other, with Alpha as a foundation, Beta as the next level with more strength, and then Gamma as most challenging). 
This program has a funny schedule of five days a week, one of which is a double day, and two rest days, though one of those is an optional stretch/recovery workout day. You can also use either rest day to get in the second double-day workout if you missed it. In addition to the scheduled workouts, we plan to keep up with our circus schedule (cyr, static trapeze, flying trapeze, and open practice when possible). We'll also have fitness adventures, though I expect those will often be instead of the scheduled T25 workout, not in addition.
Drew and I have both done T25 before; it was actually my first really intro to strength training, oddly enough, since before I hit the Beta cycle for this I had really only done cardio classes and programs before (aside from Pilates). It will be interesting to see how it goes this time. After this we have talked about Bodybeast again (probably what I'd lean toward) or P90X2. I'm also a bit interested in 21 Day Fix Extreme, but I probably wouldn't pick that next.

2017 New Leader Conference
The New Leader Conference will be held at the JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles on Feb 9th & 10th, 2018.
Elite
Coaches can now earn points from Personal Volume generated in 2017 by customers that enrolled in 2017. The number of points required to qualify for Elite remains 135.
Coaches can earn Elite points from new customer Personal Volume generated in 2017.
Coaches can earn rank booster points by having their Personally Sponsored Coaches advance to a rank between 1 and 5 Star Diamond or by having them achieve team leader status on the Leadership Ladder. These points only impact ranking and not Elite qualification.
We will now be recognizing Elite Coaches in the year they receive the rewards for qualifying to be an Elite Coach. This means that Coaches who are qualifying for Elite int 2016 will be referred to as ‘2017 Elite Coaches’.
Premiere
Coaches can now earn points from Personal Volume generated in 2017 by customers that enrolled in 2017. The number of points required to qualify for Premiere remains 135.
Success Starter
