Linear String

I wrote this little love confession for some of my own oc's in my own original story, and I realized how much it felt like Pacey and Joey, so changed the names and changed some of the dialogue about their past and thought I'd share. I imagine it was Joey's final love confession to Pacey, the one that finally brought them together for the finale.

"What're you doing here, Joey?" He yawned and looked at her with his furrowed brow and sleepy set gaze. His hair was standing up in weird ways on his scalp and there was an indent on his forehead that she assumed came from whatever he had fallen asleep on. She smiled, seeing his disheveled appearance. It made her think back to when they were young, the old high school days. Pacey was notorious for falling asleep just about anywhere, and by the looks of his fully clothed but sleepy exterior, that hadn't changed a bit.

"Well, I … I needed to talk to you."

"Okay," his hands moved from his hips up to cross over his chest. It was the body's way of telling her he was defensive, he was protecting himself from more harm. "And this couldn't have waited till, I don't know, maybe daylight?"

His words without emotion sounded harsh, but the deep sarcasm he coated them with, and the slightest curve of a smirk on the corner of his mouth, told her otherwise. She let out a shaky breath and said, "No, it couldn't. Because I realized something tonight, and if I don't say it now, well… honestly I might never say it. And I really, really want to say it. I don't want to run anymore."

"Okay," he said slowly, "then say it," and that was all he said. He seemed weary, like he almost didn't want to know what she had to say, in case what she had to say might hurt him even more.

"Okay." She glanced inside the restaurant, hoping he would invite her in and she could spill her guts to him in the centralized heated building, but he didn't budge. He just stood there, waiting. So, here went nothing. "I realized today that fate is a real bitch."

Pacey’s brow furrowed into an even deeper V shape than before, “Who? Are we talkin' Fate Blanchard? 'Cause Jo, I’m pretty sure this could’ve-”

“No, not Fate Blanchard - god I haven't thought of her since high school, but she was a real bitch - but no. No, I mean like fate and destiny, like the universe and the cosmic powers that have a say in who we are, and where we are, and who … who we end up with.”

Pacey didn’t seem phased, but his lack of expression said everything. “Go on,” he nodded.

“The thing is, no matter how many years went by of me I trying to move on and you apparently yearning over me in silence,”

“I did not yearn -”

“Ah ah,” she pressed her finger to his lips, “I’m talkin’ right now, Witter.” He nodded, wordlessly, and she lowered her hand and continued, “I realized that even though all those years in high school went by where I may not have loved you, or at least didn't know it yet, and all those years of us broken up and trying to find someone else to replace what we had, I think there was always a part of me that always knew - and not in a conscious way, but in a ‘fate has this all mapped out if I like it or not’ way. Because I realized tonight, as I was lying on my bed and staring at the ceiling for answers, that in every relationship I have ever been in - no matter how much I loved them, there was always something missing, you know? I mean I even had this great epic love with Dawson, and no matter how much I wanted to say that he was my soulmate or my other half - I always had this piece in me that didn’t feel complete. It was like this missing puzzle piece, and no matter how hard I tried forcing all these other pieces to fit, the puzzle wasn’t complete until I found the right one. That made me so incredibly mad too, because I mean, he's my soulmate, you know? We understood each other in ways I have never known anyone to understand me. He was the person I had been looking my whole life for - and the moment I got it, I wanted to punch someone because it wasn’t what it was supposed to be. That piece was still missing and it made me want to scream. And then…” she hesitated, letting out an irate huff of air before continuing. “And then you come strolling into my peripheral again, and you stand there and you call me names and tease me and ... and you take care of me despite your idiot ways, and I suddenly remembered what we felt like. No matter how much I despised you in high school, no matter how much of my heart you shattered when you broke up with me, and no matter how much I convinced myself I had moved on, you walked back into my life with that stupid smirk on your face, and you called me Jo, and suddenly … that missing piece of the puzzle just … fit. I realized it always had.” Joey had tears stinging her eyes now, her words getting choked on by the sobs she was holding back in her throat.

“Jo,” Pacey started, his arms unfolding, his body language speaking much louder than his words.

“No, don’t, not yet.” She put out a hand and took in a deep breath, letting it out with much stronger endurance. “I’m not done, okay? So, I realized tonight that fate is a bitch, because it was fate herself that did this to me. Because it was fate who never allowed me to quite love anyone the way that I … that I stupidly and hopelessly love you. And that’s not me saying that I’ve always loved you because, hell - despite my middle school crush on you, and my relapse of feelings junior and senior year, I never hated anyone more than I hated you in our freshman year of high school. But all that’s to say that ... that before I even knew what destiny and fate and the cosmos and whatever other chaos it had in store for me, the fates knew, and they knew that one day I’d be standing here, in your doorway, confessing my embarrassingly pathetic love for you, and fate knew that no matter how hard I might try to love someone more or the same as I love you, it wouldn’t let me, it wouldn’t let me even before I ever loved you. Because fate knew that you were my forever - and in a weird loopy, twisty, all jumbled-up way that fate works, before I even knew it, my heart knew it, too. I could devote my life to many people, but there was only one person who was supposed to be my always and forever and it’s … it’s you, Pacey. And the bitch that fate is, thinking she never let me be happy until I saw it, because she had already checked my heart out for a guy I never imagined I’d ever love. And I just, I realized, staring at my ceiling tonight, grappling at what I was going to say to you, I realized that fate was actually on my side - because if I could see my fate in some kind of linear line that only us mere mortals can comprehend, like following a string that got detangled and finally was straight shot to my end, I realized that at the end of the line, it would be you, always. A straight shot to my forever, and that means rather than fate not allowing me to feel love the way I wanted to - she instead was saving my whole heart for the most amazing love of my life.” She was crying again, but it was silent tears. She let out a shaky laugh and brushed a stray tear from her cheek, suddenly feeling embarrassed under the gaze of Pacey's serious eyes. “So, that’s it. I love you, and I don’t appreciate you setting me free or whatever crap you were trying to pull today because I don't want to be set free, okay? You're my forever, Pace.”

“Can I speak now?” he said with a glint of tears in his eyes, a warm smile beginning to cover his lips.

“Depends,” she wiped at her eyes and laughed at herself, “what are you going to say?”

Pacey took a step forward, cupping her face in his hands in one brisk movement. He used his thumb to brush away another stray tear from her eyes and looked down at her, grinning. “Nothing.”

Pacey didn’t take any more time to waste the space between them. He kissed her, hard and passionately, but also sweet and tenderly. Joey’s hands tangled in his hair, and Pacey dipped her a little, breaking their kiss from the giggling that was replaced between them. He lifted her back up and pushed some hair from her face, his thumb grazing her cheek and his eyes searching her endlessly.

“You’ve gotta say something,” she whispered to him, merely because they were that close, a whisper was all she needed to be heard.

“You’re right,” he smiled, kissed her again, and then pulled back to say, “I can’t believe you had a crush on me in middle school,”

Joey’s eyes rolled back in her head, “You know what? I take it all back,”

“No, no, no, but c’mon Jo, middle school? That’s… that’s pretty embarrassing.”

“You’re a dick,” she said, despite the beaming grin she couldn’t seem to wipe off her face, no matter how hard she tried.

“Yeah, but you love me, so…” he bragged. She scoffed and pushed him away a little in a teasing shove. He pulled her back in within seconds and said, “And you're it. I never doubted for a second you were the love of my life. You're it for me, darlin'.”

“Yeah?” she sounded a little more pathetic than she would have liked.

“Please, you already know I love you, Potter. I’ve been in love with you since freshman year of high school.”

“Oh my god, freshman year?” she said with great sarcasm and an even greater smile, “Wow, now that’s embarrassing, Pace.”

“Yeah, well,” he wrapped his arms securely around her, settling himself where it finally felt whole. That missing piece Joey talked about, was finally back in place, where it belonged. “Can’t really fight destiny, now can you?”

“No,” she ran a hand through his hair, her other arm securely wrapped around him. “You really can’t. But I wouldn’t want to, even if I could.”

Pacey intertwined their fingers together, tugging her inside the restaurant as he said, “Couldn’t say it better myself.”

And the rest is history.

“This is our legacy? This is what we’re leaving behind? After all our years in Capeside, this is what we have to remember--”

“Dawson,” Pacey cuts off his best friend, “it’s not the end of the world. It’s just graduation.”

“It’s not just graduation,” he protests. “You’ve got Joey, and you’re moving to Europe. I got the filmography scholarship, and I’m going to California. Even if we ever go back to Massachusetts, it won’t be the same.”

“Sometimes change is a good thing.” Joey ironically points out, wrapping her arms around Pacey’s waist and smiling at her best friend.

“Sometimes.”

Three Ships

Buck x Eddie (9-1-1) - They’ve had a grip on me since early 2020 when they showed up on my dash and have never let go since. I have no clue if they’ll ever go canon, but I’m going to root for them always.

Pacey x Joey (Dawson’s Creek) - I can’t call them my first ship, but it’s a close damn thing. I remember watching DC every week and just despising Dawson. I know it was technically his creek, but damn was he annoying, especially when he was with Joey. And then there was Pacey. Still one of my favorite television characters ever. They were so cute together and seasons 3 & 4 of the show were just excellent, mostly because of their chemistry and how many scenes they shared.

Bella x Jasper (Twilight) - Team Edward/Team Jacob, who? To be honest, I don’t really know where this one came from. I have just been in the mood recently to read some Bella x Jasper fic, and luckily there are some excellent ones out there. These moods have always ebbed and flowed, but this pairing always seems to come back every so often and they’ve got a grip on me right now. I’ve even started rewatching clips from the movies (??? what am I doing with my life???) and looking for fanvids on YouTube. I’ve always gone for the unexpected/rare pairings, I guess. Thank fuck for fanfic and fan created works.

First Ship

Kimberly x Jason (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) - Does it make sense? Not so much. But I haven’t ever made sense, even as a child. I always remember being mad that Kimberly got with Tommy and would think up scenarios that could change canon even way back then. I was writing fanfic in my head before I even knew what it was. I wasn’t joking about those unexpected/rare pairings.

Last Song

Volcano Girls by Veruca Salt - Alternative rock has always been my number one genre, particularly 90s alt rock and female-led bands are badass. This song is so kickass.

The Proposal - Needed a mindless rewatch of something cute, that I’d seen before.

Fight Like Hell: The Untold History of American Labor by Kim Kelly - Just got this one from the library and haven’t read too many chapters yet, but it’s great so far!

Currently Watching

9-1-1 - Finally getting around to finishing my rewatch of the series with my mom that we started last year. Just made it to the halfway point of season 4. I am in no way prepared for 4x13 and 4x14. 😬

Puppet History - Doing a complete rewatch of the series, now that the latest season is finished. I do a lot of rewatches, I’ve noticed, lol.

Good Omens - I saw stuff on Tumblr when the first season came out, but I was able to get the DVD set from the library and I’m finally watching it the whole way through.

Ghosts (CBS) - I watch this one every week with my mom and my aunt.

Water - it’s almost 1am here. If I tried to eat or drink something else now, I’ll be up even later.

It’s a week before Thanksgiving that her cell phone rings. Most of her friends just text, but Bessie still calls. Something about the reception at the B&B always makes Bessie sound so far away, like the occasional overseas call home she made in that lost year. Fall has been late in coming, and it’s not until she clicks off the window a/c that her sister’s voice comes through clear enough to hear, and mid-sentence. “–won’t take no for an answer this year, I swear to God, Jo. We’re setting a place for you at the table and you’re going to sit in it.”

I agree, I was really annoyed when Mr. Potter was praising Dawson and putting Eddie down. Who is he to judge anyone? Also, I’m tired of are all these parents kissing Dawson’s ass. Pacey‘s father also did this in S2.

DC recycles plots lines a lot. They recycled Pandie’s dynamic with PJ, they recycled the student/teacher plot lines and the mean boss plot lines. They also recycle dialogue verbatim. For example, the speeches Pacey makes to Joey about her being the most beautiful woman in the room/vicinity is something he says to every girl. He says this to Emma in the episode where he tricks her participating in a costume. It’s starting to sound like a bad pick up line.

I’m wondering what your thoughts will be on the resurrection of PJ? Frankly, it feels very contrived and sloppily written. It seems like the writers were setting up a Pacey/Emma thing but decided to pivot to Pacey/Joey last minute, hence Audrey’s comments during Christmas dinner.

Yeah I agree. How did the student/teacher plot line happen THREE times over the course of six seaons?? That's three times too many. And they definitely recycled the Pandie "I love to hate you" dynamic with Jacey and also the moment where Joey was proud of Pacey for getting his "first" A. When watched it I was like: "Alexa play dejà vù by Olivia Rodrigo!"

All jokes aside, the reconsiliation of Pacey and Joey felt contrived and as if it was just added as an afterthought. Maybe the writers finally realized that fans want to see Pacey and Joey together rather than Pacey and Audrey or Pacey and Emma and Joey and Dawson or Joey and Eddie, and decided to change their mind last minute. They had almost no screen time for a season and a half and then suddenly mid season 6 they kissed and Pacey was all doe-eyed for her and said he never got over her. It's sweet but I don't really buy it??

It reminds me of reading Jackie x Hyde fanfics that take place after season 8. They're usually like:

Hyde: I love you.

Jackie: But you were nothing but mean to be the whole year! You even pushed me into the creek at one point!

Hyde: That was all because I loved you!

Pacey and Joey had a similar conversation in castaways. It was basically: "Yeah, I dated your roommate but I loved you all along I never got over you!" Yeah.. no. I don't buy it sorry.

F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom

Hmmm... not sure. Do we count the years before almost constant internet interaction and Tumblr/Twitter/Social Media general? If so I guess since the early 00's that I first got introduced to Friends and Dawson's Creek.

G - Do you remember your first OTP, if so who was in it

Either Mondler from Friends or Joey/Pacey from Dawson's Creek. Those two ships were definitely my first ones. Still love them to this day.

I - Has tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why

I don't think so. I generally try to just stay in my corner and just enjoy the things ( shows/ships/characters ) I love while ignoring the things I don't love and don't bother anyone.

L - Your favorite fanartist/author gives you one request, what do you ask for

The possibilities are endless honestly. I guess I would choose any of my favorite ships in fanart inspired by classic movie scenes, like Darklina in The Notebook-based kiss in the rain art, or Saphne in a You've Got Mail inspired art, or switch up ships and fandoms like having Sherlolly drawn in the Deckerstar first kiss at the beach and Deckerstar having the Sherlolly kiss... Like I said, the possibilities are endless.

N - Your favorite fanfiction or fanauthor

Oh my... well, I Told You So by @writingwife-83 is always been my personal comfort fanfic for me, I always go back to it, and to many other stories of her like Half Agony, Half Hope. Another favorite of mine is The Side of the Angels by @mizjoely and practically everything she has ever written. I also really love the work of @pennywaltzy and her many fandoms. And I have many new fics from the Deckerstar and the Darklina fandom that I will mention soon ( I hope ) and add on my writing sideblog @the-consulting-strange-writer.

O - Choose a song at random, which OTP does it remind you of

Wicked Games ( the Ursine Vulpine/Annaca cover ) makes me think of all of my ships, but currently mostly Deckerstar & Darklina. And Mercy by Shawn Mendes just screams Deckerstar to me.

P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas)

Just... movie AU's. I love taking a favorite movie plot ( especially romantic comedies ) and then insert my ships in them.

My favourite ships to write are Dramione, Rayne (Firefly) and Shenny

My favourite ships to watch are very eclectic. Probably Hyde and Jackie (though Danny M has coloured my enjoyment 🙁), Laura and the Admiral from Battlestar Galactica (not your average love story at all, but so so good), Chenford on The Rookie (basically the only reason I watch the show at this point), Pacey and Joey in S3, Lucaya from Girl Meets World (surprised me), Grebecca from Crazy Ex Girlfriend (I will die on a hill that he's the only one she really loved), Alex and Izzie on Grey's Anatomy and (very unpopularly these days) Buffy and Angel.

Favourite ships to read are Katniss and Peeta , Nikolina from Grishaverse (not fallen that hard for a ship in a LONG time) and way too many others from other genres to list. 😅

Favourite fanfic ships to read are probably Dramione, Shenny and Jackie x Hyde

1. Do you remember the episode/scene/chapter that you first started shipping 6?

Well, I honestly don't because I was 8-9 years old lol. I guess it was s3e12, where Joey is sleeping on the couch in front of a fireplace and Pacey just stops to watch her sleeping.

2. Have you ever read a fanfic about 2?

Hmm no, I haven't but… never say never!

3. Has a picture of 4 ever been your screen saver/profile picture/tumblr screen saver?

Hmm, I'm gonna have to say no to this one too.

4. If 7 were to suddenly break up today, what would your reaction be?

Well, this one hits a nerve, because they got back together right at the end of the series finale and it wasn't exactly as I expected... I can say with certainty that I would survive because I've had to deal with worse things than that (for example, Sarah completely forgetting that she was in love with Chuck since she lost her memory because of the Intersect, therefore breaking up with him because she couldn't feel anything, maybe ?!)

5. Why is 1 so important?

O-Kay. I think they are the ones who most of all taught me that in life it's not always all sunshine and rainbows, but if you have someone to share the joys and sorrows with, your fears, your desires, and who loves you and really accepts you for who you are, then you can't fear anything. Also because I've always loved them, even when I thought it was all over, I never really believed it. I think it was love at first sight with them, and it is mainly because of the incredible interpretation of Noel and Cam and their chemistry on screen that I completely fell in love with them, first individually as characters and then together as a couple. Plus, the thrills they give me… they make me feel something that I do not feel with any other ship, maybe only Brian and Justin can get close.

6. Is 9 a funny ship or a serious ship?

I don't remember there are many funny moments between them, I think they are more of a serious ship.

7. Out of all the ships listed, which ship has the most chemistry?

Definitely Ian and Mickey. They are perfect together. They are able to make you feel the same emotions they feel in that exact moment. As I write this I'm thinking about the kiss at the dock and for me that's the moment in which you perceive the true passion, the one that consumes the soul. They're the only ones who made me feel so much reality in the truest fiction.

8. Out of all your ships listed, which ship has the strongest bond?

HA. I seriously sound repetitive but, of course Ian and Mickey. They basically survived everything, prison, shitty fathers who wanted to kill them for being gay, stepsisters who wanted to ruin them just for revenge, diseases, consequences of the same diseases, prison (again?), goodbyes at the border of Mexico, other 'boyfriends', prison (yep, again.) and general misunderstandings. I mean, if they do not have the strongest bond...

9. How many times have you read/watched the 10’s fandom?

I watched it just once, but I rewatched their scenes many times in the past (if I've understood the question...?)

10. Which ship has lasted the longest?

Hmm, I don't know... Brian and Justin, maybe? Because they've been kind of together all the time, except for Justin's hateful time with Ethan, which luckily for us lasted relatively short.

11. How many times, if ever, has 6 broken up?

I'm not 100% sure, but from what I remember at least twice. The first time when Dawson found out about them, and the second one at the prom because of Pacey’s lack of self-confidence, he truly believed he was not good enough for her.

12. If the world was suddenly thrust into a zombie apocalypse, which ship would make it out alive, 2 or 8?

I have to go for Brian and Justin because I think they can do anything together, even surviving a zombie apocalypse.

13. Did 7 ever have to hide their relationship for any reason?

Yes, for a while. Sarah is a CIA agent whose mission is to protect Chuck, and for this reason she can't be sentimentally involved. Of course she seems to forget this little detail over time lmao

Ahhh, good 'ol times.

14. Is 4 still together?

Not at the moment. Unfortunately, they never had full freedom to be together, they had to do it secretly.

15. Is 10 canon?

YEES!

16. If all 10 ships were put into a couple’s Hunger Games, which couple would win?

17. Has anybody ever tried to sabotage 5’s ship?

Sabotage? Well, kinda. Let's just say she tried to kill them. There was this girl, Bonnie who wants to take revenge on her boyfriend who died because of them (although she does not know that they killed him only in self-defense).

18. Which ship would you defend to the death and beyond?

Ian and Mickey, without any doubt. (For all the reasons mentioned above.)

19. Do you spend hours a day going through 3’s tumblr page?

I used to, very much. Unfortunately, since the show was canceled, there aren't a lot of active pages about them.

20. If an evil witch descended from the sky and told you that you had to pick one of the ten ships to break up forever or else she’d break them all forever, which ship would you sink?

1. Do you remember the episode/scene/chapter that you first started shipping 6?

Hmmm no but it wasn't at the beginning. Maybe around s3?

2. Have you ever read a fanfic about 2?

Yes, I have!!! I'm very picky about their fic as people have a very hard time nailing Felicitys speech patterns but there is a really great one from their son's pov and it's a great canon divergent fic and one of the only first pov fics I've ever liked. Also, I read a fic about them before I started the show cause an author I liked wrote a short pjo fic for them and then I started watching.

3. Has a picture of 4 ever been your screen saver/profile picture/tumblr screen saver?

No, none of them have. But these three haven changed a lot of my habits so maybe in the future. I should make them the header for my Haven blog tho. . . Only Nathan and Audrey rn.

4. If 7 were to suddenly break up today, what would your reaction be?

Well, they were never together and I don't watch anymore but I'd be like, ugh of course, this show is the worst, why can nothing good happen???

5. Why is 1 so important?

Cause it's leverage??? Healthy polyamory filled with communication and commiting crime together??? Perfection. Also, I love that their most shippy moments are like hugs and cheek kisses. Beautiful.

6. Is 9 a funny ship or a serious ship?

Legends is pretty silly and while Sara and Ava have their serious moments, they generally lean more towards the silly. Very playful together.

7. Out of all the ships listed, which ship has the most chemistry?

All???? I mean, Olicity became canon because of their chemistry. .. . But I think Audrey x Duke x Nathan (right now) have the most chemistry for me. They are pretty explosive together and I can't stop watching their scenes and reading fic and now I'm trying to write for them???

8. Out of all your ships listed, which ship has the strongest bond?

Parker x Hardison x Eliot. I can't imagine them breaking up and there was no insta love and they built relationship organically, so that trust and respect is really hard to break.

9. How many times have you read/watched the 10’s fandom?

Once all the way through, but I've watched a few episodes twice and a lot of scenes over and over.

10. Which ship has lasted the longest?

Canonically? I think. .. Oliver and Felicity, even including their break ups. I think they were together for four seasons. .. . Joey and Pacey only had one canon season together. Parker and Hardison and Eliot were confirmed at the end and the dating wasn't stared inverse. Hope and Landon are 2 seasons. Sara and Ava are on 2 seasons. .. and the rest were never canon.

11. How many times, if ever, has 6 broken up?

They were never canon :(

12. If the world was suddenly thrust into a zombie apocalypse, which ship would make it out alive, 2 or 8?

2, hands down. Joey and Pacey would not do great in a zombie apocalypse but Oliver would do amazing and Felicity is very resourceful, so my money in on them.

13. Did 7 ever have to hide their relationship for any reason?

There are so many fics about that. .. alas, I hope they have just been hiding their relationship from the audience this whole time.

14. Is 4 still together?

One of them is dead so that's a hard no.

15. Is 10 canon?

Nope :/

16. If all 10 ships were put into a couple’s Hunger Games, which couple would win?

Hmmm .. . I think Sara and Ava would win. Former assassin and clone? Yeah.

17. Has anybody ever tried to sabotage 5’s ship?

Fake Cupid did and failed. Malivore and Clark, you could argue. Penelope did a little bit, but she just told Landon the truth, she didn't try to break them up.

18. Which ship would you defend to the death and beyond?

Parker x Hardison x Eliot cause they are so healthy and people should look to them for a good relationship model (even non romantic). Trust, respect, and communication. They can be vulnerable around each other, they offer challenges, they are very supportive. . .it's lovely.

19. Do you spend hours a day going through 3’s tumblr page?

I did like last week. They are so cute and were cut short but they had a solid ending at least.

So many of them have been sunk already. .. . Maybe Audrey x Duke x Nathan. S5 was not good to them so a permanent break up might have been the best. They got quite toxic.
