The older I get the less I care for copyright. Things like copyright, trademarks and patents *should* be there to stop the little gal from getting screwed over by people stealing her work, but in reality it's used by big corporations to squeeze money out of anyone who so much as mentions their brand name. Oh, so you used a 3 second clip of our music in your hour-long video essay? We can now take all the ad revenue from that video (none of the money goes to the actual artist, of course). Oh, you showcased my brand/film/TV show, basically providing me with free advertisement? I also get all the revenue from you, as 'punishment' for not doing it with my explicit permission. Even though my brand name and everything associated with it is basically so ubiquitous that it may as well be public domain.
Oh, through horrendous and ruthless anticompetitive business practices you've made your brand name synonymous with a certain activity, item or genre of entertainment, perhaps even giving yourself a monopoly over that industry? You're so embedded in the culture that you may as well be public domain, you may as well be owned and run by the state. Let's all make google a verb, everybody!
Disney have literally changed copyright law so they get to hold onto their precious mouse for even longer, pharmaceutical companies hoard patents to get money from life-saving medicine, but youtubers have to abide by fair use laws when talking about pop culture, and people can and do face severe legal repurcussions for pirating, or even providing the option. Did you know if you're detected pirating your ISP can lock your upload/download speeds without warning? Meanwhile literal public services like the royal mail, national rail and london tube are provided by private corporations - what fucking right do you fuckers have to any corporate protection at all? You're providing a public service, you should fucking belong to us.
I've admittedly not delved too much into the history of copyright, but my suspicion is that it's built from the ground up not to protect the creations of individual people, but to give existing powers legal protection. Some choice quotes from the history of copyright wikipedia page:
"The origin of copyright law in most European countries lies in efforts by the church and governments to regulate and control the output of printers."
"As the "menace" of printing spread, governments established centralized control mechanisms,[16] and in 1557 the English Crown thought to stem the flow of seditious and heretical books by chartering the Stationers' Company. The right to print was limited to the members of that guild, and thirty years later the Star Chamber was chartered to curtail the "greate enormities and abuses" of "dyvers contentyous and disorderlye persons professinge the arte or mystere of pryntinge or selling of books."
pfft the first copyright laws literally established 'monopolies'. Copyright law ostensibly supports the intellectual property of the average Jane, but it's primary purpose has always been to control the populace and preserve power structures.

i've given ada several (related) professions to corporate espionage, both because her job is often muddled between an intelligence operative, a private investigator & sometimes an assassin/mercenary depending on which source you are using (it's important to note here that annette's description of her in RE2R as a mercenary looking to sell golgotha to the highest bidder is pure guesswork, not ada's reasoning for seeking out g nor her profession. much like krauser describing her as the bitch in the red dress it's a case of other characters' interpretation of ada being retrofitted onto her character by the fandom) & i don't wanna hyperfocus on espionage as a driving force behind ada's role in a thread
i wanna explore more possibilities with her character & as i've mentioned a few times the most spy work she performs after RE2 is intelligence gathering (paging luis for info on the plaga through their exchanged e-mails & asking for dominant parasite as evidence) her work otherwise resembling that of a gentleman thief (sneaking into the cult to secure the sample itself while zipping about in her trademark hook-shot) &, well, i do love my lupin the third
but i also am very much led by humor & when it comes to ada spying on wesker & javier hidalgo by proxy the best way to describe her role is as, essentially, a mystery shopper for criminal organizations/pharmaceutical companies interested in bioterror. somebody sent over by the federation of pharmaceutical companies (the true identity of the organization from OG RE4, which is my own speculation to be justified eventually) to figure out the innerworkings of an organization sometimes posing as a broker, a potential buyer or infiltrating under a falsified identity & gathering information from within to be sent back to her real employers. she begins freelancing after 2004, both in the criminal underworld & working with 'reputable', publicly traded pharmaceutical companies where the illegal side of her business is more of an open secret & irrelevant because of her experience/skillset, but the nature of her profession never changes. ada likes her options & while her draw to espionage came from her early days pursuing an acting career but dreading the potential of a public reputation, she has picked up several talents on the side that not only aid her with her primary job but allow her to seek out different work if she's ever bored

◈   @freedomsbounty said:   ❛ The temperature changes were still something the Siberian woman was getting accustomed to. From the severe cold and biting ice to the dusty and grating sands, it was a world different. Nonetheless, the strong woman pushed on through Junkertown. She was part of a convoy delivering some supplies and had agreed to give them protection through the storms and whatever else lurked through the route. Stepping off the machine, Zarya stretched out her shoulders and arms putting up a strikingly strong silhouette for a moment's time. Her joints cracked and her bright hair had been tied back once more. It was in need of a buzz once more but her traveling made that project difficult. Her trademark canon rested inside the convoy as it was not needed out and about among the Junkers. If someone wanted to make trouble, her strength could handle that by grabbing an arm and snapping it like a twig. Zarya was not above utilizing her best attributes in a brawl after all even if she had been trained in the art of war as a soldier back home. "Now, let's see about getting this cargo where it needs to be," she uttered with an accent being thick. Grabbing a giant crate, Zarya lugged it over a shoulder and stepped off to deliver it to its proper place. ❜
It was not often that the Junker Queen graced the loading bay.  Transactions with the outside world were infrequent, supplies arriving from beyond the Wasteland’s stricken borders rare – and if the convoy managed to survive the wilds, there were grunts to run inventory, to unpack, to disseminate.  The difference was that, this time, a highly anticipated coffer huddled somewhere amidst the delivery, its contents worth every tarnished coin that had been squeezed out of the dusty fist of the royal vault, like blood from a stone.  Crowbar in hand, Odessa pried open crate after crate, searching, the threat of a snarl lying thick on her tongue.
Bright and biting, it was a shock of pink hair that she noticed first, a colour as vibrant and unapologetic as her own cobalt blue.  It burned in the periphery of her vision, standing out against the drab backdrop of rust-eaten metal.  Odessa looked first at the woman, then at the gargantuan crate she was carrying.  Hope rekindled.
“Oi,” Odessa called, seizing attention with a rude snap of her fingers, signalling to where the container could be placed.  At the first opportunity, she opened it, the lid levered until it popped off.  Inside the gaping, splinter-lined mouth of the box, floating among a sea of protective packaging, was a clutch of pharmaceutical vials.  Pristine, intact despite the danger of their journey.  A gift.  A godsend.
The sickness had come from outside, Odessa was told.  Eradicated elsewhere in the world, it spread through the unvaccinated and isolated population of Junkertown like wildfire, devouring the young, the old, the compromised.  Even the healthy and hale had been knocked flat, and the fortified principality was reduced to a skeleton crew.  In this box lay the promise of immunisation, of lives saved.
Odessa released a breath, a look of relief painting her features.  Laughter came in the form of a coarse magpie-cackle as she clapped the woman gratefully on the arm. Maybe now the pyres would have a chance to burn themselves out.
“Thank fuck for that.”

isn't adrenaline the name of a hormone produced by the adrenal glands? how can it be a trademark owned by a company? isn't that like trademarking mucus or blood
Paraphrasing Jeffrey K Aronson
All drugs have at least three different names:
The chemical name, whose form generally follows the rules issued by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC); in this case, that is dihydroxyphenylmethylaminoethanol.
The approved (official or generic) name, which is usually the World Health Organization's international non-proprietary name (INN); in this case, that is epinephrine.
The proprietary (brand or trade) name, which is the name given by a pharmaceutical manufacturer; in this case, that is Adrenaline (also EpiPen for intramuscular injection, or Eppy or Simplene eyedrops, among others).
Other examples include:
N-acetyl-p-aminophenol / acetaminophen / Tylenol
(RS)-2-(4-(2-methylpropyl)phenyl)propanoic acid / ibuprofen / Advil
2-acetoxybenzoic acid / acetylsalicylic acid / Aspirin

The solution to the Pension System thing
Finish medical science.
What do I mean by, 'finish'? Well, it's simple. The greatest expense in life is our bodies getting old, wasting away and eventually dying because the mechanisms that keep us alive when we're young are in substantially better condition than when we're older. Our youth is the time of our independence.
But why does it have to be this way? We are pushed to produce children, but the people that designed the social welfare system themselves decided to make it pyramid shaped, of the young being born to take care of the elderly through sheer numbers. But this cannot work in a world of limited space and resources. You just get people forever aging and with the oldest aging out slower, requiring perpetual growth.
Now, socialists try VERY HARD to emphasize the "infinite growth is unsustainable :^)" thing and point the fingers at capitalists for this, but like everything else socialists and related philosophers imagine, it's not true. It's the people that decided it's in the state's interest to use the citizen's money to make it possible to pay for peoples healthcare that got us in this mess. It offered an OPTION for our aging and diseased population problem that was unaffordable otherwise, but that's just the problem. It REQUIRED a social contract with the state to make that possible, just by sheer scarcity and dfifficulty of scale.
So clearly the solution is to reduce the cost of healthcare. The biggest expenses come in the forms of surgery, the overhead and charge for high tech, patented and trademarked, very sophisticated and expensive medical devices, the absolute racket that is the pharmaceutical industry, and the cost of hospitals.
These are all questions of the level of the science, logistics of production, and minimum standards. If we had cheap ways to accomplish all medical needs for gauze and bandages and gowns that were pennies to the dollar, ways to manufacture anesthetic that are extremely cheap, ways to manufacture even personalized medicine, and set those as the minimum standards, we could disentangle these elements from the proprietary healthcare system.
No more Emergency Rooms charging $100 for a high priority OTC pain killer.
And the biggest expense of all: Longterm care, and Disability, the mandates that society beat a path through the world for the disabled. If disability can be cured, then a means to provide ability should be offered.
A single person reduced to a vegetative state can effectively vaporize millions of dollars of wealth from the pool, subsidized by insurance and state funds to distribute the load across the rest of society. There's absolutely no justification for this.
Rather than trying to find solutions that force everybody else to cover everybody else, thereby making untold billions of wealth disappear, why not systematically solve disability and restore ability? Invest in stem cell regenerative medicine and restorative therapies. Invest in refining our life support machines with computerization, which is very cheap now, that can do the job of millions of dollars of specialized medical equipment for the price of your wall outlet in electricity.
Can the problem be boiled down to medicine? Refine the processes that make the medicines and find alternative, more cost effective products for better results.
Vaccinations are getting to the point where one can vaccinate against every single part of a virus, thereby immunizing the animal from them for hundreds of millions of iterations, as well as being usable against cancers. Your own tumors could be MRNA vaccined away.
Eliminate disease that has to be treated chronically by curing it, not covering up the symptoms. If it's a system in the body, it has a process to make a functioning one and a process to unfucking it and working properly.
Once you get the process down to a science, it's a matter of making it as economic as possible. Once the science is finished, a trinket that can provide '00s quality MRI from a handheld device, medicine that cost a few dollars, not thousands of dollars a pill, that leaves the biggest expense of medicine of all being surgery.
And, well... there's no real way around the cost and expense of surgery. So. Removing the massive expense that comes from our own ignorance and the cost of technology that bloats the industry, we still run into the issue where needing surgery is still expensive. There's some hubub about mechanizing surgery, but I just don't think that's viable.
There's absolutely no reason why, outside the government and corporatism collaborating to gatekeep the profitability of the industries and how much they cost, these refined and improved processes couldn't give people cheap, functional prosthetics if the business and technology to do it is there. In this modern day we should have technology that scans a toothless human's gums and print them off dentures for dollars, not tens of thousands of dollars.
Once the cost of mortal life is reduced so you could cover every conceivable surgery you'd ever need in your lifetime to one year's salary, indirectly, just from buying the other things in life you'd need to function (having a designated family sensor chair that'd diagnose everything you could possibly have) then the necessity of bilking the public treasury for overpriced, write-their-own-paycheque bullshit will go away.
