possession horror really so often gonna be like "oh noooo I'm just an innocent sweet girl with an evil man desperate to get out of me, we must exorcise the man from within to become the sweet girl again" and not expect me to make it about transmasculinity?

SUMMARY: After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, a psychiatrist becomes increasingly convinced she is being threatened by an uncanny entity.
Please, please, please take care of yourselves and avoid this movie (or watch it through your fingers) if you're sensitive to themes of self-harm and suicide.
Beyond that, don't watch the trailers! Go into this movie with only the information given here. It's so fucking good, the scares were great and the 'monster' or 'creature' or whatever the fuck that thing is haunts the mod to this day.

WHEN EVIL LURKS (2023)
Tumblr media
Holy shit was this film intense. About 5 mins into tye film, and we've discovered a corpse cut in half with all of its innards on proud display. This caught my attention immediately, and I knew thus wouldn't be your typical horror flick. To have that gruesome of a discovery so early in the film was certainly a bold statement of what was to come. 3 minutes after that, we come face to face with one of the most disgusting makeup/ prosthetic jobs I've ever seen, and I mean that in the most positive way. The look of Uriel was enough to make my stomach turn. Tye film continues to test the limits of horror until the end credits. I think I will permanently have Vicki being flung around by that dog seared into my brain. It was really interesting to see how a low functioning autistic person might react when possessed as autism isn't portrayed very often in horror. As an autistic woman, I always enjoy seeing representation, and Emilio Vodannovich, who portrayed Jair, did a fantastic job. I especially love the low-key ambiguous yet heartbreaking ending. If you want to be traumatized, it's a must-see

Fun religious horror trope I'm not sure has been done before
Picture this: furious, obsessive hate preacher eventually experiences demonic possession/transformation as he cares more about his own contempt and hate than God's word, and is reborn or reformed as a horrifying monster, fulfilling the Biblical saying of humans being "children of wrath".

Edit: I see a ton of answers saying "torture porn" and some asking why I didn't add it. Torture porn isn't a subgenre of horror. Every single horror film that yall describe as torture porn falls into an actual subgenre (usually slasher/splatter or body horror, though there are exceptions). Torture porn was a term made to describe the rise in realistic brutality in horror in the early 2000s. If you don't like the brutality or gore in horror, that's fine. But that's not a subgenre. Every single one of these could be incredibly gorey and brutal, as well as can be the opposite of that. Torture porn is not a subgenre in itself

BEYOND THE DOOR (1974) Reviews of Italian Exorcist rip-off
‘You will definitely quiver with fright…’ Beyond the Door is a 1974 Italian horror film about a pregnant woman who becomes possessed and is seemingly going to have the devil’s baby. Directed by Ovidio G. Assonitis (Piranha II: The Spawning; Madhouse; The Visitor; Tentacles) and Robert Barrett from a screenplay co-written with an uncredited Alex Rebar (The Incredible Melting Man). Original…

SUMMARY: Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons.
Ash Williams is the love of the mod's fictional life, sorry to every other horror character. Look at that face! (By the way, the mod has seen The Evil Dead.)

paranormal: possession vs. devils, demons, & hell
possession: this subgenre is pretty straightforward. someone or something is possessed by a spirit. the spirit can be good or bad, but this is horror, so most of the time we will get a malevolent spirit. sometimes, humans don't have to be the ones that are possessed. some of my favorite horror films include inanimate objects coming to life to kill.
examples: christine, oculus, possession
devils, demons, & hell: very rarely in possession films does the devil do the actual possessing, but when he does inhabit a human body the stakes are always much higher. demons and lesser imps often do most of the devil's heavy lifting, but they don't always have to possess a body to create a living hell for the characters in the film. instead, they can simply be entities that leave a wake of death and destruction.
examples: the omen, devil, to the devil a daughter

NIGHT SWIM (2024)
Tumblr media
Painfully mediocre. Although i did like the idea of instead of a haunted house, it's a haunted swimming pool that's about where my appreciation for the film ended. Even in terms of paranormal horror, this film was vanilla. It didn't do anything particularly fresh or exciting, nor did it have amazing effects to make up for the overall boring storyline. While I do admit that the makeup job of the bloated corpse of the previous dead looked pretty decent, the possession makeup was not as terrifying as it should have been. I also hated the unrelatisic breath holding capabilities of Eve, where she resuces Elliot. Girl, even if you weren't being attacked by corpses, you would have drowned. In the end, it was nice to see a parents love shine through for their children enough to make the ultimate sacrifice, but even in the way this scene was done was boring. It didn't feel desperate or emotional at all. The best scene in the entire film was at the end and filled in the pool because it was the first and only smart decision in the whole movie. It was also nice to see that people in horror movies are indeed capable of making decisions that make their situation better for not only them but also for future people. As a last thought, justice needs to be bought about for cider the cat who was just minding his own business and not even that close to the pool when he was snatched. Not cool demonic pool. Not cool at all.
