A Reason To Come Back! Shanks (OPLA) Part 2

Reader is a mermaid who washed up close to death in Luffy's village and made a home for themselves. Shanks comes back and tries to convince y/n to join his crew. Shanks x Female Reader.

'Then join my crew!' Shanks said in a carefree manner.

That was four months ago, you didn't quite believe Shanks would go through with his promise, so you said yes.

After that first meeting, you went back to the tavern with Shanks to meet the rest of his crew, after stopping at your house to get some dry clothes. Shanks had so many questions about mermaids just like Luffy did and you tried to answer all of them. Maybe Luffy was right about him being a good guy, he gave off the vibe of someone you could trust but wouldn't want to cross.

You were nervous meeting the rest of his crew since pirates were primarily male, but they quickly put you at ease and were amazed at just how much booze you could put away, turns out that was a pro of being a mermaid. One of the newer crew tried to hit on you and it was then you revealed apparently what Shanks suspected when he heard you laugh, and that was your ability to compel. Let's just say the rest of the crew would never let the guy live down the humiliation you put him through.

Before he went to bed Shanks told Luffy of the promise he'd made to you. At first, the boy was upset that you wouldn't be joining his crew but was happy you'd both be pirates one day.

It did feel nice to let loose, laugh and have fun around others. And Shanks kept his eye on you the whole night. Maybe returning to the sea one day might just happen for you. You sketched a rough drawing of the jolly roger you'd seen during your escape, and it turned out Shanks and his crew didn't like that crew already so were all on board to help you.

During those four months, you kept yourself busy, fishing, helping around the village and keeping an eye on Luffy. You also had started putting things aside in case Shanks kept his promise and you had to join his crew which didn't seem that bad.

Today you'd just finished swimming and were returning to your house when you saw a familiar red-haired pirate sitting on your porch.

'SHANKS!' you call out.

I should have known y/n wouldn't be at home. They weren't in town when we arrived so I assumed they were swimming in the cove. Other than Luffy and myself no one else had been to the cove to see her mermaid form, it was her private space.

'SHANKS!' y/n calls out.

I look up to see the red-haired girl walking up the path towards me smiling and dripping wet. It was very unusual to see someone with the same hair colour as myself but y/n explained mermaids either got the colour from their mother or father or could get a mixture of both but y/n got her mother's red hair and tail.

I stand up and embrace y/n, who hugs me back. She was a lot smaller than me, but that didn't mean you should underestimate her, 'I told you I'd come back. You get younger each time I see you.'

y/n blushes at the compliment and playfully shoves me back, 'How old do you think I am Shanks?'

My face drops, this was a trap women liked to set to trip men up, 'err I don't know maybe early twenties.'

y/n grins, 'Such a charmer, we're the same age Shanks, mermaids just age slower and appear more youthful.'

I was shocked by her answer but also relieved. I said the early twenties to not sound awful when y/n could easily pass for eighteen or nineteen. At least we wouldn't have a kid on the crew with us.

'I didn't come to ask your age y/n, I came because I have something for you.'

y/n tilts their head and their eyes widen, 'what do you have for me? How's the arm by the way? Still getting used to only having one?'

Before leaving last time I'd lost my arm rescuing Luffy. I had no regrets and would do it again. It was tough but I was slowly adapting.

'Some days are harder than others but it will take time,' I reply honestly.

I reach behind me and under my cloak pull a wrapped-up piece of black fabric before handing it to y/n. y/n slowly unwraps the fabric and gasps loudly.

'You did it Shanks...this is the jolly roger I saw...thank you...' y/n stumbles over their words, tears pricking their eyes, 'what happened?'

It warmed my heart to see her get happy and emotional staring at the flag belonging to the ship that killed her family, 'they had a lot of enemies, and my crew simply pinned them against each other until they were no more. You're free to return to the sea y/n.'

y/n puts the flag down and throws themselves at me, causing me to grunt at the sudden impact but y/n wasn't that heavy so I was able to catch her as she hugged and clung onto me, 'you kept your end up so I'll keep mine, looks like I'm joining your crew Shanks.'

I laugh and put y/n down, 'Welcome to The Red Hair Pirates. I think you'll fit in nicely.'

It turned out that y/n was already packed, ready for the day to arrive. The rest of the crew and Luffy were waiting at the tavern, so we headed down there with y/n's belongings.

'I'M GOING TO MISS YOU SO MUCH Y/N!' Luffy shouts in y/n's face as soon as we enter the tavern, but y/n simply smiles and ruffles his hair not fazed by the loudness.

'I'm going to miss you more,' y/n replies and squeezes his cheek.

I clear my throat behind them and they both look up at me, 'What about me Luffy, won't you miss me?'

Luffy grins like an idiot, 'Of course, I'll miss you Shanks, you made me want to become a pirate but how many mermaids am I going to meet in my life?'

y/n sniggers, 'and since I'm now a pirate mermaid I guess you're number two in his eyes Shanks or should I say, captain.'

I roll my eyes but embrace the situation. Things were going to be a lot more interesting with y/n on the crew.

Defresne, he explained, signed off on the documents “without so much as a glance.” The implications were staggering. Over 12 years, the 5th Circuit, which is responsible for reviewing challenges from trial courts in four parishes, had disregarded at least 5,000 pro se petitions from Louisiana prisoners, according to the court’s records. The inmates ranged from people convicted of murder to nonviolent offenders sent away for life. Many had limited education and struggled to present their arguments in the language of the courts. If Peterson’s accusations were true, none of the judges had ever laid eyes on their claims.

There is overwhelming evidence that state courts routinely send innocent men and women to prison. Researchers estimate that at least 1% of those serving time for violent offenses have been wrongfully convicted — roughly 7,000 inmates in state prisons alone — though they believe that number is much higher. Louisiana law says that people sentenced to death are entitled to court-appointed lawyers for all of their appeals. Subjected to such scrutiny, an astounding number of the state’s prosecutions have fallen apart. Since 1976, 82% of Louisiana’s death sentences have been overturned by appeals judges after defense attorneys exposed serious violations that occurred at trial. Most sentences were reduced to life; some prisoners were exonerated. That statistic underscores a fundamental inequity. The people sentenced to lengthy or life sentences were arrested by the same police forces, prosecuted by the same district attorneys, represented by the same public defenders and convicted in the same courts as those on death row, but they are on their own. When they file a pro se petition asking Louisiana’s appellate courts to reconsider their cases, they are at a significant disadvantage. Those petitioning the 5th Circuit after that meeting in 1994 had no chance at all. To create the appearance of a proper review, former staffers said Dufresne formed a “pro se committee,” which included three judges who agreed to lend their names to Peterson’s rulings. Whenever a judge on the committee retired, Dufresne appointed someone new. The nature of the pro se committee was an open secret at the courthouse. “I knew what they were doing, and I knew it was unconstitutional,” said one former clerk. “Everyone knew about it.” In Louisiana, courts charge prisoners a fee for petitions — generally $50. Those costs are usually paid by parishes in which the defendants are convicted. By 1999, the 5th Circuit was charging $300. The money, paid by taxpayers, flowed into the 5th Circuit’s discretionary fund. In a period when the state’s criminal justice system was close to financial collapse, with some public defenders representing as many as 400 people at a time, records show that the 5th Circuit collected at least $1.7 million for the pro se petitions its judges did not read. Former 5th Circuit employees told me the judges spent the money on office furnishings, travel allowances — even for retired judges — and other perks the state didn’t cover. When asked about the fund’s expenditures, the 5th Circuit said it keeps financial records for only three years and could not provide an accounting.

Honestly in my opinion, there’s nothing WRONG with watching copaganda shows, AS long as you know theyre copaganda yk? I like Brooklyn 99 but I still know it’s copaganda despite that yk????

completely agree! like, there's a difference between watching a copaganda show because you actually like and support cops irl, and watching a copaganda show because you enjoy other aspects of it without actually supporting its pro-police methods. copaganda is sneaky and very insidious so there's absolutely something to be said for being very aware and critical when you're consuming that. that's why i am whenever i watch most of my favorite shows.

and like, copaganda has different levels. ultimately it's ALL copaganda, but there's a major difference between, say, shows like Blue Bloods, which literally justifies ALL of its main characters commiting police brutality, and Station 19, which strongly focuses on BLM, highlights the Black characters' disillusionments with the police, has deep storylines about Black characters and white characters working together to actually create tangible change, and allows its Black characters to show pain and discomfort without tone policing them.

i can't stand shows like Blue Bloods because it's clear that they were CREATED with an intent to spread copaganda. it's pretty difficult to watch a show like that and not be affected by its copaganda, no matter how much you think you're against cops, which is why i stopped watching it very early on. however, watching shows like station 19, 911, and 911: lone star (which, mind you, are all about firefighters for the most part, not cops) is much easier because the copaganda they contain is much easier to analyze and work with and not internalize.

i enjoy shows like that primarily because they often contain a found family dynamic that is enhanced by the characters having to face danger together, a dynamic that i've always loved. i don't watch them because "ooooooooooh cops good wahhhhhh", and in many cases these shows have actually given me so much inspiration to not only unpack my own racial biases, but to formulate ideas of how to participate in anti-racism in the future, which is something i take very seriously.

so it's not that i take copaganda lightly. i do not. but i also am able to have a critical lens and separate myself from copaganda messages when i watch certain cop-adjacent shows, and i don't think it's particularly helpful to try and tell people that media consumption is always and unequivocally related to what you believe- i know from personal experience that media can have a very diverse set of purposes- you can use media with fucked up themes for things other than justifying fucked up shit.

i guess, in a way, in the same way that people can have interests and fascinations with other dark media, doesn't mean they're suddenly going to condone murder and shit.

on a side note i actually seriously recommend station 19 and 911: lone star because they have both greatly strengthened my anti-cop sentiments. station 19 actually lingers on the topic of BLM for awhile instead of just trying to sweep it under the rug after one episode. a huge part of the show focuses on the Crisis One team, a team that two of the Black main characters created together to respond to mental health crises with trained responders instead of automatically deploying the police.

it also allows the Black characters so much room to grieve and be angry, and regularly disparages cops as a system and shows the firefighters struggling internally with working within a system they don't support. it's very good in my (albeit white) opinion.

and 911: lone star shows a lot of natural diversity and deals with it pretty well imo. like, instead of just having a Muslim woman for diversity points, they actually develop her and allow her the room to be a whole character. they allow the Black trans guy to deal with his family issues in a very adult way and they show the real traumas that come with being Black and trans while also allowing him joy in his trans identity. they show one of the most beautiful gay relationships i've ever seen on TV and one of the main characters struggles with his learning disabilities and instead of laughing at him, all the other characters just... adapt to his learning style and help him pass his tests to become a firefighter.

i really recommend the shows if you haven't already watched them!

You know, this is pretty silly, but I'm kinda starting to dislike the term "PoC", mostly because its used so often when it doesnt make sense. Like I still recognize its usefullness sometimes, but many times I'll see phrases like "POC are usually considered dangerous and threatening". Like I'm sorry, but in what world are asians considered scary or dangerous, or light skinned hispanics and native americans? It's literally only black and brown people that are seen this way. I dont know why so many people like to group every single non-white together when our experiences are often very different. "POC tend to be more disadvantaged at any level of education and perform worse." Again. asians literally kick white people asses when it comes to academics and success, literally what the fuck are you talking about??? Just say blacks and hispanics, like its only a few words more."

That's why I'm pro black women. Not pro Black (Black men can choke and BLM was a pro Black MAN movement) and not pro POC. Asians are infamously anti Black and I'll never forget how glad they were to feast on the anti BLM/the 13% Black menace resentment to push their anti asian hate thing. There was a reddit threat with a asian man saying Black people had the blood of the asian women who got killed by that WHITE psychopath..... His reaction is everything you need to know about how Asians will always suck up whiteness to dunk on Blacks.

And yeah, I roll my eyes soooo bad whenever I see Asians pull out the bEing a MoDel MinOritY is HaRd.....hmmmm, shut up? 🙃 they have the same lack of self awareness has those millionaires complainzd about being stuck in their 1500 square mansion during quarantine..... Just shut up, already.

And despite their struggle of being the model minority, Asians never peep a word when the Whites are using them to diss Blacks and argue that the problem is that they're just stupid and need to integrate moar (of course they forget that Asian vs Black immigration story are entirely different, their racial stigma is not comparable (east asians are still PALE and phenotypically very closer to whiteness than Blacks and that definitely plays a role). So deep down, they LOVE being the model minority and stick up FOR THEMSELVES when the Whites don't on other POC. They just pretend being sad about it to sound relatable to other non White communities and rebuke the "Asians are white supremacy cucks" narrative.

That being said, I'm the first to point out how the Black community needs to get its shit together. Of course, rap culture got created by the CIA to destroy the African American community, this whole ghetto, baby mama, glorifying illiteracy shit got shoved to Black Americans.. None of those things are organic to Blackness, otherwise it would still be as much of a thing in Africa, when that's not the case (African immigrants do better in the USA than ADOS, that's for a reason) but there's still need to be accountability. I'm sick of some Blacks acting like Blacks dealing drugs and shooting each other were victims. They are predator and need to be treated as such. Candace Owens is insane but she's very right on that aspect. Black men are the main source of Black femicide yet those men expect us to mule for them against White supremacy..... Black women need to burn the cape and look out for THEMSELVES. Black men are emasculated bum and will always use their women as human shield than hold themselves accountable (they always blame their shortcomings on White supremacy, yet lust after the White man's women...the same women birthing their oPpResSor lmao). This realization made me snap out of that BLM shit (not that I was really into this anyway but I thought it was still a positive thing that more ppl grew aware of police brutality) and made me pro Black women. Other communities can choke big time.

And don't get me started on Latinos. Those people will clown gringos to sound cool but weren't they the one clowning France soccer NT and how full of Blacks it was so they possibly couldn't be french? Weren't Argentinian soccer fans bragged about their White passing team and how their country wasn't "like a Netflix movie"? lmao Those idiots have the tragic mulato curse written all over their butt. Months passed, Leo would visit them as much as he could. It seemed to be around the same time every month. His actions became more obvious to Logan and it would irk him more and more. Forgetting those unsettling feelings when he would remember how loving and sweet and just how amazing Leo was. 

Leo would cook for them.

He dances with Logan in the middle of the night when neither can sleep.

He reads those long boring books with Finn and talks about his favorite parts with him. 

He loves them in a perfect way that ties all of them together in a wondrous equal tangle. 

He also has a tendency to get angry after being awake too long. 

He gets jittery when nervous or when he hasn’t had a moment alone after a few hours. 

He would disassociate to the point where he would stare forward for hours. 

Leo would scare them sometimes, not because he was violent or abusive but because it was obvious he was sick. They knew about his fibro and learned all they could about it. How it flares up after stressful situations whether physical or emotional. How painful it is. Where the pressure points are. How to care for someone going through a flare up. 

The issue was, Leo didn’t take care of himself. He would continue working until absolute exhaustion, until he could not stand without help. He would drink and take medication to numb himself completely. It was dangerous and scary. They worried one day Leo would accidentally mix the wrong medications and not wake up the next day. 

Leo would never tell them what he was taking or how much, when they would call him after a show and it was obvious he was in pain they would see him tossing pills into his mouth but never knowing what they were. 

It’s terrifying watching someone completely destroy themselves. Logan knew something illegal was being hidden and he wanted to get to the bottom of it to help Leo. To save the one he was falling in love with. 

But Leo was a pro at hiding. 

Clay was sick, he was ill, he didn’t know where he was. He just knows that someone is pressing a cold cloth to his head while he lays on the cool floor of a bathroom. He doesn’t remember anything besides having a good time out at a club in Gryff with a couple new found hockey friends. He was shivering, everything was spinning, he couldn’t catch his breath, his memory was fuzzy and he was sweating so much. He knew he was making some noise but he didn’t know what it was. 

He didn’t know how much time passed but his surroundings were starting to defuzz around him. There was a woman crying next to him quietly, she must have been the one who was pressing the cloth on him. He blinks trying to get his eyes to focus. 

Someone else was in the room. He heard them talking, and that other person sat down next to the woman. He keeps blinking but nothing is working and suddenly everything goes black. 

He wakes up with a rotating fan stationed near his head moving from side to side giving him a delicious breeze. He looks around and realizes he isn’t on the bathroom floor anymore. He’s on a couch in Thomas and Dr. Tremblay’s house.

 Why was he here?

 What time was it?

 What happened?

“Thomas! He’s awake!” Dr. Tremblay rushes over and kneels next to him. Clay tries to talk but nothing is coming out. She has a tiny flashlight and shines it in his eyes, blinding him for a few moments. “Fuck, we should have just taken you to hospital.”

“Is he still not okay?” Thomas’ voice sounded rough like he had been yelling or singing too much. 

“No, will you help me get him to the car?” Clay watches Dr. Tremblay back away from him, his eyes feeling heavy again as strong arms find their way under him and the feeling of the couch beneath him disappears. 

Everything is black again.

He once again wakes up, this time the lights of the room he is in are blinding. He closes his eyes and lazily lifts his hands to rub them feeling tape or something on the back of his right hand. Picking at it, someone gently stops him. 

“Don’t do that.” The voice was gentle and sweet. It was feminie and familiar but he couldn’t place who it was. “Don’t pick at it.” He opens his eyes and the light is diffused around two concerned faces.

4/18 - on my way to work a goose was walking towards me in the middle of the road. asshole. I spent the morning immediately ravelling and watching YouTube, then we had a safety meeting but T let me skip it cause I had a ton of work. they talked about s's goose fight, she had to get 7 stitches in her head. holy shit. talked to T afterwards about it and turns out she was also pregnant. id quit too. G needed help with a shipment but actually he didn't and we ended up just talking about his car and how shein is taking advantage of duty loopholes and we're tryna go to court to stop em. ravelled all day. watched this anime called zombie Land Saga, it's cute. thought about trans stuff. I'm tired lmao. had lunch w mom, poke, talked about her real estate stuff and how my dad is an asshole and her allergy shots and aunt K's business that she let fall apart and B and how he backpacked Europe when she had me and she gave me a red velvet crumble cookie and a chocolate chip one for K. and I tried this maple cake one she had and it was delicious. when she left the goose wranglers showed up and I headed in and mom sat in the parking lot watching her while D and I stood in the stairwell watching as well and talking about suba and why they use border collies and then M rolled up and joined us and told us he had a one legged deer in his yard and I said "one leg????" and he meant 3 but that shit is hilarious. just a deer hopping around. or dragging itself. that's terrifying. spent the rest of the afternoon ravelling and watching that anime, got most of it done, oh yeah this morning I figured out this thing that my phone has been doing for months where I can't make or receive calls. finally sorted that. hopefully for good. came home, shaved, did my makeup, looked cute, worked on homework, watched a supereyepatchwolf vid about fake games, got a unit done, made poblano tacos, smoked, chainsaw man, dark souls, beeeeeeed. I felt really sad most of the day about just, trans stuff lol. enough of that for now.

4/19 - slept good, woke up awake, work was chill. spent all day pretty much ravelling and watching YouTube vids, some vids about trans manga, bought the flashlight M showed us at S's bachelor party in fuckin 2019, had it on the list forever lmao. can't wait. planned more of the trip with the cousins, went to Wawa on lunch for soda and zyn and a banana. fuck it, zyn every once in a while.
