You're reblogging some fantastic stuff about The Mechs (coming from a tma fan) is there anything else you can tell me about it? I'm deadly curious and very interested in seeing more of Jon Sims' work
hello!!!! I am so normal about the mechanisms (lying) but am not good at describing things so if you want, like, The Intro Post To The Mechs than @x-ca1iber has it and that’s much more fine tuned but I shall try my best! This may be… a bit of an infodump, and not very concise.
base content warnings for mechs, not this post but the mechs as a band and their stories: violence, so much violence, lots of death, war, general tragedy, British people (ew)
okay. So. The basics! The Mechanisms were a 9 person folk cabaret band who told stories in their albums and songs that were based on mythology and stories (more on that later)
Outside of these stories they played individual characters, a space, steampunk pirate crew of immortals roaming the universe aboard a sentient starship named the Aurora and finding tragedies to tell through their albums. They're, as I mentioned, immortal, through a mechanism (not to be confused with The Mechanisms, the name of their crew lol. They weren’t very creative with that) A mechanism is a replacement for a part (or in some cases several parts) of one’s body made of metal and shit, that causes regeneration if you die. And this shit isn’t light, it is totally possible to regen from being, for instance… shoved into a sun for a century. so basically, crew of immortals making stories they witness into albums and playing the roles of people in those stories.
For a fan of tma, the most recognizable part of this is 4 people in the crew (though only 3 are major characters in tma) Jonny Sims, of course, plays Jon in tma and Jonny D’ville (he/him) in the mechanisms. (He is… perhaps not the most creative with naming his character) Jonny D’ville is the first mate (NOT captain. Though he would say he was) of the Aurora, and his mechanism is his heart. He was the first person in the crew, and the first to become immortal. He’s also the lead singer, and plays harmonica. Frank Voss plays Basira in tma, and in the mechs plays Ashes O’Reilly (they/them) an arsonist crime boss, ship’s quartermaster, whose mechanism is their lungs! Jessica Law plays Nikola Orsinov in tma, and in the mechs she plays The Toy Soldier (it/its) The Toy Soldier is… a bit of an outlier, in that it wasn’t ever mechanized, wasn’t ever “made” immortal. It is simply a sentient clockwork toy, with a voice box stolen from a human it had been in love with. (Somehow jess is typecast as an unsettling dollike entity twice in a thing created in part by Jonny sims) Its role in the crew is… really nobody knows. Occasionally it’s called mascot. It’s just kinda there and whenever it’s kicked out it finds its way back. It’s very charming, and simply happy to be involved! last, and kinda least in the context of being a tma fan, is Tim Ledsam, who plays the exterminator Jordan Kennedy in tma and Gunpowder Tim, (he/him) master-at-arms, in the mechanisms. His mechanism is his eyes.
others, who I’m not going to go into detail about, are Nastya Rasputina (she/her) engineer, Ivy Alexandria (she/her, actor uses he/him) archivist, Drumbot Brian (he/him) pilot, Marius Von Raum (he/him, actor uses they/them) and Raphaella la cognizi (she/her)
two, the albums! This is gonna be pretty quick because it’s just an overview, but there are 4 main story albums that tell self contained stories, 2 that are a collection of songs that tell single stories, and 1 EP thing that tells its own little ballad. Then there’s a live recorded version of their final show ever, death to the mechanisms. They’re all very tragic, and *very* queer stories.
first, once upon a time (in space) a story based on fairy tales, tells the story of a war through the stars. second, Ulysses dies at dawn, a film noir style telling of a dystopian world based on Greek myths. third, high noon over Camelot, a cowboy western ballad about Arthurian legend on a space station. fourth, the bifrost incident, a rock ballad about Norse myth, lovecraft eldritch horror, and one person being really fucking horny for a train (Dw about it) the other albums are a mix of myth and story retellings (Frankenstein, the story of Prometheus, a rhythm based video game called crypt of the necrodancer) and character backstory songs for the Mechanisms.
random ass fun facts because I’m out of base info and I think the mechs is really funny for something supposed to be tragedy
-one of the crew, Nastya, is in a loving romantic and sexual relationship with the starship
-there are creatures called octokittens that are half octopus half kitten. I love them.
-Jonny is Texan. Yeah. (Well technically New Texan, because he was born on a planet called New Texas, but whatever)
-I’m not going into this because it’s more complex lore but the person who “created” most of the mechanisms was a vampire named Doctor Carmilla and was a (very disfunctuonal) mother figure to at least most of the crew. They kicked her out
-Doctor Baron Marius Von Raum, one of the other crewmates, is neither a doctor nor a baron. His real name is Byron. He psychoanalizes people for fun.
-they’re all horrible people, the Mechanisms. They kill and burn and destroy and manipulate unrepentantly and take pride in breaking every law they can find (though we have explicit canon confirmation that Jonny flat out refuses to commit any sexual crimes) It makes them fun, though
-there are *so* many photos of the bandmates in character and a good part of fandom activity is just passing around those photos within the fandom like they’re Pokémon cards
-last, and very much not least, it’s quite important to note that Jonny Sims didn’t “create” the mechanisms, not like he did tma. It’s a collaboration between a bunch of great storytellers and musicians that started out as a uni band
here is a photo of the mechanisms as a whole group, because why not
Tumblr media
Anyway I’m going to see so many glaring issues with this as soon as I post it but I hope it makes at least some sense! Check out x-ca1iber’s post for it if something doesn’t make sense… yeah. That’s it.

mechtober day 27 - outfit swap
Gunpowder Tim was no thief. He was a murderer, sure, he’d eaten some dead people, sure, but he didn’t steal.
There were, of course, exceptions to that rule. For example: Halloween.
Hollowseen was an old tradition from his home planet where people would dress up as other things and do various ridiculous activities, most of which resulted in acquiring sweets. He’d never really participated in it much, since it had been a huge thing back when North America was still around, before everything over there went to shit and the US burnt the continent to a crisp. (Tim had once brought up the fact that he’d visited Texas to Jonny, who’d grumbled something about human settlers, only to tear Tim’s throat out when he pried). But he’d enjoyed the tradition, back when it had been a thing.
Just because Earth was uninhabitable at the point of time they were currently in didn’t mean he couldn’t have fun.
So, while Gunpowder Tim wasn’t a thief, Marius von Raum most definitely was. So was Raphaella, but he hadn’t been able to get her on board.
The plan was to steal everyone’s clothes while they slept and exchange them with someone else’s thus forcing Halloween upon the crew. Marius, Tim, and Ashes were probably going to get brutally destroyed afterwards, but it would be fun nonetheless.
It had taken a moment to answer all the questions that his partners in crime had. Questions like ‘do we get to eat candy?’, ‘why aren’t we all dressing like Nastya if we’re supposed to be scary?’, ‘I think we’re too tall for Jonny’s trousers, will that be a problem?’, ‘can I paint your nails?’, and ‘you said there was fire in the Jim-A-Lanterns?’. Admittedly, most of the questions came from Marius, but once he had cleared things up, they both seemed content.
He’d roped Marius because he felt like Marius would enjoy it. He’d roped Ashes in because they were the only other person he could think of who would help for only a small fee.
The trio worked quietly, which was a rare achievement for any of the mechanisms. They managed to get Ivy’s clothes into Ashes’ room (Ashes had already set their things aside to be put into Nastya’s) and Raphaella had helpfully slept in her lab, so they didn’t encounter any issues there. Drumbot Brian didn’t really sleep so much as power down in his pilot chair, so moving Marius’ belongings in and his own out was an easy task. The Toy Soldier, obviously, had been the easiest of the heists. After a couple hours and one close call when Jonny had gotten up for a drink, they only had a couple swaps left: the Hard Part.
No one really wanted to be the one to go into either Jonny or Nastya’s rooms. They hadn’t ended up watching a movie together, like they’d said they might, which was a hindrance, and Nastya had fallen asleep in her own bed, pressed close to the wall, and not in the vents like she was prone to doing.
The siblings were the two eldest mechanisms, which meant they’d been alive centuries of not millenia longer than the rest of them, and had honed their reflexes to shoot at the slightest sound. Tim slept with a gun at his side, prepared to fire if anything went wrong, but the first mate and engineer were on a whole other level. So that was going to be a problem.
They had everything prepared and had even convinced Aurora to open the doors as silently as possible, but that didn’t change much about their current dilemma.
Ashes clothes were in a neat pile, ready to be put in Nastya’s closet. Nastya’s belongings would be placed in Jonny’s and his would, unfortunately, be handed over to Marius. Ashes had spontaneously decided that this would be the case when he’d stepped on their foot, since they couldn’t kill him right then and there.
Tim wasn’t afraid of death. He was worried about the plan he’d spent so long on not working, but that was a simple concern. No, the thing Gunpowder Tim and just about any rational being were truly afraid of, was Nastya Rasputina. Jonny was a little batshit and prone to eating people, but Nastya was cold and calculating, with hard eyes that knew just how to take you down. She didn’t talk much but when she did her presence was nothing if not commanding, and the things she had to say were often laced with exasperation. The only person who didn’t seem at all scared of the former Cyberian princess was Jonny d’Ville. He’d been around for quite a while before her, and even though he’d died at a younger age, therefore leading their ‘older sibling/younger sibling’ dynamics to shift near-constantly, he’d seen a whole hell of a lot in that time span.
Gunpowder Tim was not and would never be as stupidly reckless as Jonny, in that way. So it was with great caution that he approached Nastya’s door. It was with anxiety that he opened her closet and began passing her clothes out to Ashes, who handed them to Marius in Jonny’s room next door. Even though it had been Tim’s idea, it was fairly clear who was making the decisions in their group and it sure as hell wasn’t him.
It went… mostly fine. Tim escaped alive. He did panic and leave some of Ashes’ waistcoats on the floor, which they would probably kill him for when they found out. In his defense, Nastya had stirred and it had spooked the living shit out of him.
Marius also successfully didn’t die. Being the newest member of the crew, they’d put him in the position where he was most likely out of the three of them to die a painful death. Tim would’ve gotten a quick shot through the head, but Jonny had been drinking and wasn’t known for conserving bullets. Ashes gave him a pat on the back for being alive, then lit a cigar and took off to their rooming, claiming that they hated both of them and just wanted their rest.
Marius and Tim grabbed snacks from the kitchen then parted ways. They had to seem like they didn’t have a clue what was going on either when they woke up, or it would all be stupid and useless and not fun anymore.
Tim had taken time to decorate the Aurora (with a lot of her help) with what he remembered from Hollowseen. Spider webs, Jim-A-Lanterns, cracked mirrors, the whole shebang. He was quite proud of his handiwork and went to sleep content, only to be woken up a couple hours later by the sound of loud gunshots.
This was not an uncommon way to wake up, aboard the Aurora, but these seemed more purposeful than usual. Well. Sounds like Jonny woke up. His theory was proved when the gunshots were accompanied by the sound of a very upset harmonica, like the first mate was just trying to make as much noise as possible, which was probably the case.
Tim stretched and changed into the Toy Soldier’s clothes, tying his hair back to set the hat jauntily on his head. He briefly considered imitating the mustache, before deciding it would be a dead giveaway and walked out of his room.
The hallway was a mess in a good way. Everyone looked confused and a little pissed and very out of place in each other’s clothing.
Raphaella had tucked her wings into Tim’s coat, making the back bulge oddly. Ivy kept fiddling with the back of not-her shirt, where there were two slits sown open for wings to pass through. Ashes was rocking Ivy’s flowery skirt, though they looked strange without their signature hat. Nastya was wearing said signature hat and eight scarves in an attempt to replicate her jacket. A jacket which Jonny had adorned, having to roll up the sleeves and the cuffs of not-his trousers. Marius looked uncomfortable in Jonny’s too small clothing, but smiled widely as he adjusted the goggles which had never once been more than just an accessory over his eyes. Brian looked… fine, really. Confused, sure, but he’d gladly adopted Marius’s tan jacket and pink necktie. The Toy Soldier was grinning with Brian’s tophat perched on its head the way it usually had their own, arms tucked behind its back in its typical manner.
“Jonny, give me my jacket back,” Nastya ordered.
“Absolutely not! Whoever did this shit had help from the ship, so it could easily have been you.”
“Why would I change my own clothes out as well.”
“Because you’d be caught out if you didn’t! I’m not that stupid, Nas.”
Tim smiled at the chaos. It was a perfect way to start off the day, in his opinion. Jonny seemed to have his mind set on not killing anyone who he deemed a suspect, which was everyone, so he didn’t even have to worry about that.
“You know, while we’re already in this predicament, there’s this Earth tradition I thought might be fun.”
Tim was shot in the face by three different people.
When he woke up, they all wanted to know more about Hollowseen, and he was happy to oblige.

hello Dino please tell me about ur oc rosie. I probably will understand nothing bc I know very little about the mechs but please ramble to your hearts content anyways.
I love you so so much!!!!!
Okay so.
Her name is Rosaliya, she's a mechs oc and she's like if just some guy was a cute girl who takes to the whole *gestures to the mechanisms* thing scarily easily
Her backstory is that she's from The City (kind of a. Technological dystopia inspired by greek mythology, the setting of the mechs album Ulysses dies at dawn) and that she's childhood friends with Raphaella la cognizi (who in my canon grew up in the city before she joined the mechs) and through time travel and mechs typical general timeline weirdness, just after the events of udad, Raph (several millenium old at this point) realizes that in the point in time that they're at, her childhood friend Rosie is alive and it's only been a few years since she left The City, so she goes to find her
Unfortunately Rosie got caught up in Some Kind Of Something (<- has not figured it out yet) and Raph finds her just in time to watch her get shot and killed so she does the normal, well adjusted, rational, platonic friend thing, which is of course to bring Rosie back from the dead by replacing her boring human spine with a fun mechanical one (and also giving her a tail just for funsies)
They're t4t also which is Important To Me
I love her so much!!!

Ivy Alexandria collects myths. Whilst Jonny might start killing immediately and Nastya might investigate the local machinery and Raphaella will look for test subjects, she’ll be making a bee line straight for the local knowledge store. There, she’ll download everything she can get her hands on, and then spend the next decade reading and making notes and archiving.

One day, her memory will fill up, she’s sure. The unfortunate consequence of a mechanical brain.
There must be some sort of management system, chugging along in the background and sorting out old memories, and presumably that had a manual, but all she could remember was a broken shortcut that no longer led anywhere, languishing in some obscure branch of the file tree.
It made her uneasy, for reasons she couldn’t quite name. That shortcut is deleted now.
She’s taken to backing her brain up periodically on a separate hard drive, kept safely in her library.

Things have been hazy recently.
No, not things - Ivy’s catalogue of butterflies indigneous to the Xefe forest on the planet sometimes called Nes’Casa is as pristine as it always was. Her collection of fables, fairy tales, legends and myths is still vast and still meticulously organised. Her things are fine, and she checks through them monthly at minimum to ensure they stay that way.
On a more abstract level though…
She keeps finding new passages on Aurora that she has definitely never seen before, but the rest of the crew act like she’s the weird one when she tells them. Then later, they’ll be telling some story like she was there when it happened, even though she for sure doesn’t remember it happening.
It’s confusing and it makes her head hurt and she’s taken to spending more and more time in the library, where she knows the exact contents of every book stored there

Susanoo (スサノオ; historical orthography: スサノヲ, 'Susanowo') is a kami in Japanese mythology. The younger brother of Amaterasu, goddess of the sun and mythical ancestress of the Japanese imperial line, he is a multifaceted deity with contradictory characteristics (both good and bad), being portrayed in various stories either as a wild, impetuous god associated with the sea and storms, as a heroic figure who killed a monstrous serpent, or as a local deity linked with the harvest and agriculture. Syncretic beliefs that arose after the introduction of Buddhism to Japan also saw Susanoo becoming conflated with deities of pestilence and disease.
Susanoo, alongside Amaterasu and the earthly kami Ōkuninushi (also Ōnamuchi) – depicted as either Susanoo's son or scion depending on the source – is one of the central deities of the imperial Japanese mythological cycle recorded in the Kojiki (c. 712 CE) and the

The Mechanisms fic part 1 of 5
Bluebeard and Scheherazade - Overture
We all know that stories can be tricky. Sometimes they can be about multiple things at once, depending on who's doing the telling - and who's doing the listening. For instance, this story could be about the inevitability of the narrative and how stories always end, no matter how much one might wish otherwise. From another point of view it's simply another dreary tale of how a monster fell out of the sky and ended a world. It could even be about the fight against an evil king and the downfall of tyranny…but then, we've already had that one, haven't we?
Regardless. Are you sitting comfortably? Good.
Our tale begins with Jonny d'Ville - part time storyteller, full time monster, humble first mate and unwanted captain - falling out of the sky some five miles over the surface of the planet Perrault.
:readmore:
The exact time of these events is difficult to pinpoint, nor can it be said to matter in any objective sense. Suffice to say it was, by the measure of the living inhabitants of the planet Perrault, in the thirty third year of the brass century, and by Jonny's own reckoning was some time after the arrival of Marius and Raphaella, but well before Nastya's departure.
The exact reasons for Jonny to find himself falling in such a way are equally difficult to pin down. In all probability he had done something stupid. What more has to be said?
In any event he splattered across the Barbin Forest and while his mechanism was working steadily to reassemble his liquefied remains, the people of Conomor, a nearby village, ventured into the woods to see just what had come crashing down on them. This wasn't the wisest of plans, since it was well known that the Barbin Forest had a large concentration of the bloodthirsty monsters known to plague Perrault and to feast upon anyone foolish enough to cross their path - not to mention the danger that Jonny himself presents to anyone foolish enough to cross his path, especially newly resurrected and more than a little irritated. No, in any other situation, this story would have been very short and very boring. But it just so happened that the person who finally did cross Jonny's path - a young woman by the name of Liesel - bore an uncanny resemblance to someone Jonny had once known.
Now that in itself is not so fantastical if you stop and think about it. There are a limited number of possible configurations of physical features in the universe, after all, so perhaps the real surprise is that in all the people that Jonny had (briefly) met he had never encountered a doppelganger before. Or perhaps he had met many but had never cared enough to remember their faces and thus had never noticed. This face though. This face he remembered.
To understand why we will have to jump back a bit, to a time when Jonny hadn't even lived a whole century and was just starting to think he understood what immortality meant. At this time he was, by and large, content to be the chaos in Dr Carmilla's wake as she roamed the stars in search of science and stories, and it was on the course of those roamings that they met a young girl who was bright and fierce and funny, and who played the harp like each note could kill you. Things happened - not all Jonny's fault, not all in the Doc's control - and as the girl lay dying she begged for the chance to live.
Dr Carmilla knew how to save her.
It would be nice for Jonny to have a sister.
Only one of the preceding statements is true.
The mechanisation process had worked before, and there was no reason for it not to work again, except it didn't.
She died in agony and revived screaming until she died in agony and revived screaming until she died screaming and revived screaming and diedanddiedanddiedanddied and screamed and diedrevivedscreamed and…
The doc took her apart, again and again, searching for what went wrong, and when that didn't work she took Jonny apart, again and again, searching for what went right.
Jonny held her hand. Told her stories. Smothered her with a pillow. Knitted her a jumper. Put his gun in her hand and the barrel to his chest and let her pull the trigger as much as she liked.
And all the time the girl went on dying. Reviving. Screaming. In agony, every second of every day of every month of every year of every…well. You get the idea.
Eventually, the doc found a way to let her die for good.
She died peacefully.
Carmilla never made the same mistake again.
Only one of the preceding statements is true.
And none of this affected Jonny, because even back then Jonny wasn't the sort of monster to be affected by mere death, no matter how bad that death might be. He never so much mentioned her name again, which should tell you something.
And yet, when he saw Liesel in the forest and she held out a hand towards him and asked him if he was alright, he stood and stared and the thought of violence never crossed his mind.

hi. Normal Mechs AU content.
all the albums are things that they have actually experienced, except they’re just wayyyy more played up.
OUAT(IS) was when they went to a renaissance fair, and the workers decided to spice it up and have a full blown war go on while the fair was in town. the crew loved the idea so much that they started working on the album immediately after the fair ended
UDAD was literally just a shortened version of a D&D campaign Ashes wrote and played with the rest of the crew
TBI was written after a nearby passenger train got derailed. Lyfrassir is an actual person, and did actually work on the case. Marius, Raphaella, and Ivy however were not actually arrested, they just actively tormented Lyfrassir until they caved and told them everything they knew. after that, the crew began working on TBI
the events of HNOC are still in progress. not too sure about it just yet

"Representation is power"
Nasir Fleming asserts, "Representation is power."
Nasir Fleming's article, "Dope Women Bloggers Discuss the Importance of Black Travel," effectively highlights the empowering nature of travel for black women. It achieves this by showcasing the experiences of black female travelers who have shared their insights through their blogs. While writing about their journeys is a form of liberation in itself, disseminating these stories to a broader audience of black women globally serves as an opportunity for community-building, mutual experience-sharing, and enhancing safety.
Historically, marginalized groups have faced significant barriers in accessing essential resources, as well as in obtaining accurate representation, coverage, and support for their experiences and challenges. In the present day, the internet plays a crucial role for underrepresented communities, providing them with increased agency in crafting their own narratives and representation, a significant shift from mass media before the internet.
Furthermore, through sharing their experiences online, these creators have the freedom to express themselves creatively. Online platforms allows them to reveal aspects of themselves that may resonate with others. These women have beautifully demonstrated the art of traveling as black women, documenting their stories through photographs that can be viewed on their platforms. Additionally this challenges the misconception that travel is exclusively for a white demographic. As Briona Lamback (22) shares, “Black travel is important because like most spaces, we are ignored in travel. Things are just now starting to be more representative, but that’s because we started creating content. I have friends and family who do not think black people are supposed to travel, and that traveling is reserved for white people. We [content creators] are changing the narrative because it’s simply not true. I’m just happy to be a part of that! Their journeys serve as a source of inspiration for those who may have never seen themselves as deserving of travel.
Recognizing that borders between countries are ultimately social constructs is a crucial step forward. As humanity progresses, embracing our identities as global citizens, unbound by physical or mental limitations, will become increasingly vital. Those who embody this global perspective will serve as bridges, connecting us to new experiences and forging innovative ways of coexisting.
These women serve as powerful advocates for experiencing the world on our own terms, each exuding a sense of individuality and empowerment. Raphaella is a glowing 20-year-old currently studying abroad in Leuven, Belgium. Through her blog and Instagram, she shares valuable insights on personal health, travel, and hair care. As Raphaella aptly puts it, "Scam when you can." She emphasizes the significance of black travel, underscoring how it opens doors and encourages black individuals to venture further, broaden their horizons, and seize travel opportunities. She advocates for equal access to these enriching experiences for all.
These writings possess the power to inspire us to embrace the world on our own terms. Furthermore, their stories remind us of the profound impact that access to resources and representation can have on individuals. With the ongoing evolution of the internet, it has become an even more potent tool for underrepresented voices to shape their own narratives, offering a platform for self-expression, creativity, and personal growth.
