Such a book for the first read of 2023! Like many of you who have known Žižek, my encounter with him started from those literary classes where we would have to dig and gain resources about this Slovenian philosopher and his prolongation of Marx' idea of the-ism. One thing about Žižek I've found out was leaving me with the question or admiration: "where on earth you can find such a Marxist who is super duper funny!?" One of the answers prolly lies: in Slavoj Žižek's. And as much as I search, I can hardly find anyone writing about contemporary politics and economics who does anything but rehash well rehearsed ideologies that are worn, tired, and ultimately irrelevant. Zizek is the exception. In this book, Žižek actually looks at what has happened in 2011 and allows its reality of that particular year to shape his thoughts - rather than his preconceived narrative shape his reality. It was not an easy reading but I found the book genuinely challenging and typical Žižek, he backed up his argument so well and I was forced to agree most of the time as I found it consistently insightful. If you aren't familiar with Marxist critical theory or psychoanalysis, you could easily get lost or misread this book. That said, it is the only book on the topic I've been able to find that is worth diving into. Dinesh lives in a displaced people camp on the coast of the ocean during the Sri Lankan civil war along with other refugees. These people dun have anywhere to go anymore when the Tamils are pushed out of the villages by the govt. forces fighting the Tamil Tigers. Dinesh is completely alone with no family remaining. He would have to face the violence and destruction the war brings upon the citizen of the country. Dinesh later is bestowed a girl by this girl's father to be his wife. The father does it in order to protect his daughter as he no longer can protect her himself. Initially Dinesh is so unsure to get married but he finally jumps in. Yet can a ring go without the suffering? What I love about Arudpragasam's The Story of a Brief Marriage is his ability to present the scenes and to drag the readers to the sequences of the story like they're experiencing them themselves. When the marriage triggers Dinesh's emotion to the extents of the existence of which he has totally forgotten; Arudpragasam to me also shows what is inside the boy's traumatised mind. There's no such sentimentality but Arudpragasam has never failed with the readers' physiological insights. The text flows leading the readers along with Dinesh. Yes! The book is indeed so condensed and the timeframe in which the story takes time is so short but Arudpragasam manages to pack so much in each sentence. At times, it just feels that Arudpragasam tends to give too much time to things so they will go along with the meaning instead of allowing them to hold their own meaning by existing. What came before and what is to come seems to matter much less than what is happening right now and it's Arudpragasam who successfully brings that essence in this book. "This time I felt lonely and sad, deeply sad. Some part of me didn't want to corporate or move forward. The tree seemed to mock my self-pity. I was raging. I was completely exhausted by myself, exhausted of my fear of vanishing into ordinary. I was at the end of my body's road. Everything has stopped inside me, even tears. I passed out..." I was completely tired physically and mentally. Added the drama and heart aches from the closest and dearest one leaving me nothing but exhaustion. I was on the verge of nothing and everything as I am about starting a new life. I do not have places nor anyone to turn to. Completely on my own with series of medications. A bitter laugh out and I started to question myself "how can one feel so lonely even when she's in the crowd? Life always works in such funny ways!" Then comes Ensler's whose one of the monologues I once performed on the stage. My heart constricts as it may come as a message from above. A reminder that if I were given this life to live for 36 years; it's worth fighting for. “People thought that being one of a kind made you special. No, it just made you lonely. What was special was belonging with someone else.” ― Brit Bennett, The Vanishing Half Self-quarantine after being tested with co19: rereading Brit Bennet's the Vanishing Half and my heart constricts rereading the lines written here. How can some lines in a book resonate your soul in a way you cannot explain? "..Paris! His head was full if Paris. In the last few days they had been singing nothing but Paris...Paris...Paris... what memories the name evoked! Sundays on the butte at Montmartre, picnics in the Bois de Boulog e, the carousels in the Tuileries, the lake in the Luxembourg where the youngsters sailed their boats. He thought of the lovers who embraced in public, in the parks, on the street, everywhere. Christ, how they made love in Paris! And the twilight hour - that eerie mettalic glow in the sky, as if it were a piece of metal played on by vivid lights, streaker with hasty daubs by an enormous, unseen hand. A different sky althogether, the Paris sky. A northern sky." - Crazy Cock by Henry Miller I guess Miller is always identical to Paris or vice versa. I sometimes wonder why he is more famous there than in his origin. If you are reading Miller and looking for the sperm soaking scenes in it then you'll be disappointed. Yet if you are into eroticism like I do, you will have to slow yoursef down to grasp it in the midst of Miller's absurdity. I love my rereading time on this book. The intro written by Erica Jong whom she is also well-known in the erotic literary industry is enlightening as well as the intro from Mary V. Dearborn. I cannot help myself but to go with Jong's argument that the tones used in this novel is completely different than that somehow "melancholic" Tropic or Cancer. You'll understand it when you read this book! Stories exist in the moment when you have no way of knowing how you got from the past to the present. We never know at first why they continue to survive, as it in hibernation, despite the erosive power of time. But as you listen to them, you feel like they have been woken up, and up breathing them in. Needle-like, they poke along your spine into your brain before stinging you, hot and cold, in the heart. - The Stolen Bicycle by Wu Ming-Yi Des ✨ #bookishindonesia #bookaholic #bookstagram #bookstagramindonesia #bibliophile #bookreview #bookreviewer #booknerd #bookaddict #bookblogger #bookaesthetic #bookenthusiast #booksbooksbooks #descalibrary #descaslibrary #descareading2022 #fictionbook #literaturejunkie #nonfiction #igreads #igbook #instaread #instabooks #ReadTheWorld22 #riotgrams #BookstagramReels #WuMingYi #TaiwaneseLiterature #TaiwaneseWriter #TheStolenBicycle (at Bangkok, Thailand) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClPsTi-Sls6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Meet May Belle, the community midwife, healer and conjur and Rue, her daughter who wants to follow the mother's footsteps. Rue has more talents for birthing than casting spells and hoodooing as her mother. Yet she takes over the duty of thise "conjure women" when her mother dies. As the setting of the novel is pre, during and post- slavery, the readers will meet Varina, the daughter of Marse Charles - the plantation owner. Rue and Va are at the same age but Va holds a higher position simply because her background and the fact that she's being white. So when her pregnancy goes wrong, the first thing she does is to susperct Rue of her casting a spell on her. So yes! The readers will be time-travelled -swept away with all the stories, characters and history from 1854 to 1929. Births, deaths, mother-daughter relationships, slavery atrocities, violence, abuse, racial injustice, beating, lynchings, rape, intensity, hierarchy, mystery, haunting fears, African-American history, dialect, life on the plantation, as well as magic like voodoo things are going to be centres of the book. if you ask me: WAS it WORTH reading? My answer is yes! I think that the book will invoke some good discussions around the slavery and freedom. However, here is what I feel: I was a lil bit confused half way through the book. It isn't that the book is bad but some parts of it are not well-elaborated. For example: when they found a naked dead man in the woods. I was clueless and never really understood the purpose and connection to everything else. So, just give this book a go. As this is the first work of Atakora, I am sure her next book will be more appealing. A Pho Love Story follows the story of Bao and Linh, two Vietnamese teens whose parents own and run competing Vietnamese restaurants. When they finally meet again after many years, the sparks fly between them but sadly their families' feud and the past catch up with them. This book has elements of romanticism but also dramatic moments related to the diaspora Vietnamese families. The racism, stereotyping, war-related trauma and questioning their roots are all there. The writing may be mediocre and the love story may be so cheesy but they delve into some really serious personal experiences like the trauma and the grief from escaping from the Vietnam war and living in a new country they do not even familir with in order to start a new life. So yes! My opinions of this book are two-fold. The mediocrity is not the reason tho. What brough this down for me is the slow facing esp. in the beginning of the book. It's incredibly slow causing me the urge to put the book down so many times. Add Linh and Bao's relationship that does not hook me that much. But heck it's okay and pretty entertaining tho for an easy reading. “It saddens me that you don’t recognize this. It’s an unfortunate reminder that as much as my community represents the true American Dream- building a foundation out of uncertain hopes and dreams- people like you would rather be ignorant or spread hate than accept this reality. But your racism has no power here. Your words mean nothing in Little Saigon. So whatever you hoped to accomplish- in person and online- you have failed."
