It was roughly boat-shaped: humped near this end with behind them the jumbled descent to the shore.On either side rocks,cliffs,tree-tops and a steep slope: forward there,the length of the boat,a tamer descent,tree-clad,with hints of pink: and then the jungly flat of the island,dense green,but draw at the end to a pink tail.There,where the island peetered out in water,was another island; a rock,almost detached,standing like fort,facing them across the green with one bold,pink bastion.The boys surveyed all this,then looked out to sea.They were high up and the afternoon had advanced; the view was not robbed of sharpness by mirage.

Rasina tells a story from two POVs: from the POV of Joost Borstveld, a Dutch officer in Batavia in 1755 and from the POV of Hendriek Cornelis Adam, another Dutch officer in Banda circa 1621. What makes these two POVs intersected is the narration about slavery during the Dutch colonialism in Indonesia esp those coming from Banda; pointed in two aspects: the opium trade and the slavery. I am always amazed with Banu’s ways in depicting his story. He seems to drag his readers’ imagination and take them to experience the story themselves. Add his strength: his research on the specific matters he’s trying to convey. I wish that this book can be translated into different languages. PAUl VERLAINE, ARTHUR RIMBAUD AND INDONESIA Who doesn’t know Arthur Rimbaud? French poet known for his transgressive and surreal themes, and his influence on modern literature and arts. A restless soul who is also well-known for his controversial homoerotic relationship with the fellow poet Paul Verlaine. Rimbaud wrote his famous poem the Drunken Boat in 1871 and sent a copy to Paul Verlaine. Verlaine - not knowing that Rimbaud was only 17, urged him to come to Paris where they began their feverish homosexual passion and emotional abnormalities. It lasted for 13 months as in 1873, Verlaine shot Rimbaud in Belgium. In 1876, Rimbaud joined the Dutch army and was sent to Indonesia in 1876. He was stationed in a small city of Salatiga, East Java where he finally escaped and made his way to Europe a week after his arrival. People made a speculation saying that he returned to France with the British army. He then made it to Cyprus before headed to Africa and lived a prosperous life in Abyssinia for 11 years until he contracted syphilis. In 1891, he had a leg injury and was forced to return to France. It was too late because his leg would have to be amputated and at the same year he died in the hospital there. Meanwhile, 3 years later in 1894, Paul Verlaine died penniless and in relative obscurity after: being divorced by his wife, prison in 1981 and living as a religious Bohemian who could not stop his drinking habit even in poverty. Hello, book fam! I’ve had a busy, satisfying weekend and I’m ready to rock and roll into the new week. As many of you are aware, I am experiencing a reading slump. I’m not fighting it - instead I’m discovering other things that I like to do and this is making me content. I made my way slowly through Love by Jeanette Winterson. She writes piercingly with a certain brutality that, at first, can feel intimidating. The reader can feel her anguish and bitterness emanating from her clipped, taut prose. Sarcasm is highly evident and her take on love and it’s associated emotions is highly singular and bold. That being said, I did not agree to many of her ideas. I also found that as the book progressed, many of her ideas were repetitive. Overall, Love is a solid introduction to Winterson.
