Flame Toys Go! Kara Kuri Power Rangers Dino Megazord
So much to say. Firstly, we've known about this toy since January of 2021. I remember being very excited at the initial reveal, because while it was the Dino Megazord, it was so hyper stylized and cool looking, that I would definitely own a second one for something like that. (Look at the pictures, then think about that statement for a second...)
But it wasn't until August of 2022 that it actually went up for order. And y'know what went up for order shortly before it? The ZAP Megazord. Good job communicating with your third party developers Hasbro. But I was still way more interested in this one. I even had $300 set aside to buy it. But when it went up for order, it was over $400, and I realized that I could be both the ZAP Megazord and the newly unveiled ZAP Dragonzord for less than it combined, which is how I ended up owning them... And then I caved and preordered it anyway.
But we're not done, because this thing was originally supposed to release in June of 2023. But it got delayed. And again. And again. It had multiple production delays that set it back until the last day of February 2024 (thank goodness it was a leap year). And the whole thing just got me feeling a little... jaded. I just felt like I had waited for so long, and that it had been delayed so many times, that I just didn't think it was ever going to come out.
But when I finally got that email saying it had shipped, I let out an audible gasp. The next two days we me antsily waiting for it to get here. And when it did, everything was, like, "they did that?" "Wait, they thought of that?" "That transforms, too?" It was a magical experience I haven't felt since Glacialord. So let's get to why this toy makes me feel like that:
Tumblr media
The Good: Where to start? The T-Rex, I suppose. It puts the other three I have to shame. It GaoGaiGar's the legs, so they're able to have more articulation than the others, which fold the legs up onto the back of the thigh. It has pretty decent ankles, fully posable arms, the robot's waist, and a tail with a ton of universal joints in it (not balls, like ZAP Dragonzord). The tail can even expand and compress at every joint. Its only part with subpar articulation is the head, but that's only due to all the transforming it has to do, and even then it's still a great, unique sculpt.
If you've handled the ZAP or Lucky Cat mastodons, you'll understand what they tried to do with this interpretation, but it's just a bit more and feels a bit better. Like, it can balance on its back legs, its front toes can articulate, the trunk has a ton of joints. Its definitely the most brickish of the set, but I can't imagine giving it, say, a neck joint without encumbering it. And speaking of neck, the new head position gives it such a great identity that sets it apart from its predecessors.
The triceratops has legs! But if that's not your thing, they can flip around to reveal those usual treads. Those tiny legs are also very strong, and quite posable. Definitely the second-most brickish, but that's saying a lot considering how many poses you can get it into with what it has.
I find it really hard to get good looking quadruped articulation, but the saber-tooth tiger nails it. Pounce pose, run pose, (I haven't tried sit pose yet) any pose you can put it in looks great. It also has a really emotive neck, which helps a lot.
And the pterodactyl has the biggest glow-up. It has an actual neck like an actual pteranodon! And that head on top is very articulated, giving it a lot of emotiveness. Those wings are also very articulated, and having the hip skirt serve as actual feet makes it feel like such a better package than even the Lucky Cat's version, with the double ptera that mostly ends up as a backpack.
And onto the transformation, it's not actually that complicated. Its big thing is it has a lot of locks all over the toy to prevent certain joints from moving in different modes, but it doesn't take long to realize "if it doesn't move, look for a lock." And there are so many weird and cool transformation bits, like how the head assembles, the T-Rex's nose compressing, the mastodon toes becoming the elbow guards, the shield actually transforming, etc. It's fun.
Tumblr media
Now, before we get to the main attraction, lets pivot and talk about the tank mode real quick. There's quite a bit of dedicated engineering for just this mode, with there being a slide in the legs, cuts in the hips, dedicated parts in the T-Rex chest and mastodon head, etc. Also, credit to this one over the others, the pterodactyl really brings it together.
Tumblr media
And the actual Megazord is so well engineered. When combined, it feels like a solid piece; I'm not really worried about it falling apart, or untransforming as I play with it. All those locks really do make a ton of difference. And it's incredibly posable. I never had any trouble getting it into the pose I wanted; wings were super smooth to work with, arms never fought me to do anything, ankles are good, tail caused a few problems but only because I was trying not to poke my monitor. And that's the most amazing thing about this toy; that it is a toy. This isn't just some big display piece, it's playable, it's fun, and that's what probably surprised me the most about the whole experience. I was expecting to be scared that I'd shatter this thing if I looked at it funny, but it's just a super solid toy.
And everything is very self-contained, like the original. There's no extra hands, no adapters, no weird super-complex dismantling going on. The guns don't store (from what I've found), but apart from them, there are no spare parts. Heck, even the sword stores away. The sword. It's exceedingly impressive what this accomplishes.
The Bad: Two things. One, some of my glue didn't set? The front of the T-Rex pelvis, and the back of one of my hands both pop off. These aren't super important, load bearing areas or anything; I can glue them myself and they'll be right-as-rain, but I worry about other people where maybe more important areas didn't set right? Hopefully this is a rare issue and never on anywhere important.
And second it the saber-tooth tiger bit me, and it drew blood. Like, it's the next day and I can still see the mark. I also tried to set him on my lap, and his tail poked me right in the ouch. Very spiky, very pointy, be aware.
The Next: When this went up for preorder, they did also show off their grey prototype for a Go! Kara Kuri Dragonzord. And I think the only other time they've mentioned it was when that same proto showed up at a toy show. I follow them on The Twiblies, and they talk about this line maybe once a year, if that, so my hopes are not high that we'll ever get it. But after handling this, I do hope it eventually comes out. Heck, with how much work I've been putting into redesigning Titanus, this feels like the company that might actually do something interesting with it, besides the mono-boot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, I cannot sing enough high praises about this release. It's a beautiful, well engineered, very playable toy. It is incredibly expensive, though. I just hope that if you walk away from this review with anything, it's that if you do bite the bullet, you'll be getting your money's worth.

this is another dinosaur character. this one is from 2017 :D he's more of a mysterious character, as at first he was supposed to be a robot, but somewhere in 2018 i made him a real pteranodon. he did not have colors so this could count as a completely new design, but i think it's just finishing something i never did.

OptimusPhillip Reviews – Transformers: Power of the Primes Swoop
So now that we've talked about Grimlock and Slug, I think it only makes sense to round out wave 1 with Swoop, the Dinobot bombardier. Swoop has always been my favorite of the original Dinobot team, but I'm willing to put aside my biases and evaluate this toy just on its own. Because, I'm gonna be honest, this one is kind of an odd one out among these Dinobots for a number of reasons.
Pterosaur Mode
Just like in G1, Swoop transforms into a robotic Pteranodon... which was considered a dinosaur in the 1980s but isn't today. Regardless, he does largely look the part of the G1 toy, with only very slight deviations like a lack of fingers on the wings. Like Slug, much of the original sticker detail is recreated as greeble on the wings, which actually have different molding on the bottom, just like the vintage toy. And of course, he still has the "rockets" on his back, complete with red piping detail along the sides, and even black patches on the top. The tail is missing, but honestly that's such a small part of the design, I forget he even had one in the original.
Much of the coloration in this mode is also toy-based. In addition to the metallic gray, the feet on the back and the lower jaw are both done in red. If you look at the beak itself, however, you'll notice that it has the same gold paint on the inside as the clear parts on Slug and Grimlock. But unlike those two, Swoop didn't have gold parts inside his beak in the original toy. There's a reason for this, but we'll get more into that in robot mode. For now, he seems to be a pretty solid, if not entirely perfect, recreation of the original toy.
Unlike the G1 toy, this figure lacks landing gear. Instead, he just lies flat on his belly, which could lead to scuffing in places you don't want it. You can bring the claws down and stand him on his feet, and the head can also hinge down to face forward in this configuration. But the fact that he's resting on a pair of tabs instead of the actual feet tells me this isn't 100% intentional. Thankfully, he does have a pair of 3mm ports on his belly, so you can always just put him on a flight stand... if you have one.
Other articulation in this mode is fairly limited. The wings are on hinges so you can get some flapping action, and they can also curl up for transformation. The jaw also opens, exposing some sculpted teeth... which Pteranodon didn't have, but I don't think anybody cares that much. Aside from that, he's basically just a brick. You can store his accessories in this mode, though. There's a 3mm port under the jaw, so he can store his sword, and there are tabs on his back for the Prime Armor to attach to. So you can still play around with him a bit, which is nice.
Now, however, I think I should address some of the flaws in this mode. Due to the combination, Swoop's head is attached to a cradle that hinges down at the chest. It's supposed to tab into place for pterosaur mode, but there's something off with the molding and it doesn't actually fit properly on most copies. The joint is tight, so it still generally stays in place, but it still kind of sucks. Also, and this might just be my copy, but the alignment of the tabs that are supposed to keep the feet in place seems wrong. The tabs are angled inward slightly compared to the slots they're supposed to go into.
Overall, I think the Pteranodon mode is alright. It's a well-done homage to the original toy, only marred by a couple minor design flaws.
Conversion
Compared to Grimlock and Slug, Swoop seems to take more creative license with the original transformation. The rocket pack still forms the legs, the arms still come out from the side, and the beak still forms the chest, but there are a couple little deviations that I can't quite see any purpose for. Instead of forming the thighs, the pterosaur feet fold down against his shins, and instead of folding up into the back, the wing tips rotate around and point downwards in robot mode. I'm guessing these are concessions for the combination, but I feel like something else could've been done here.
Robot Mode
Remember how I said we'd talk about coloring oddities more in robot mode? Well, here we are, and I think it's quite apparent. Unlike the G1 toy, Swoop not only has gold parts inside of his beak, but he also has a blue chest. For those who don't already know, this is an homage to Swoop's cartoon model, which was primarily based on his Diaclone coloration, with a blue chest and a gold lower jaw, rather than the Transformers toy which had a red chest and no gold in the mouth. What makes this a little odd is that the rest of his deco is still based on the Transformers toy, with the black shoulders, the green bands around his wrists, and a couple tampographs on his chest mimicking vintage sticker detail. Of course, these details stem from the Diaclone toy as well, so they could just be going for that look... but then you notice the pterosaur feet are done in red, like the Transformers toy, rather than the cartoon and Diaclone-accurate gold. So this is a full-blown toy-toon pastiche, which does kind of clash with the other, more toy-oriented Dinobots. I personally don't mind. The colors don't clash or anything, and Swoop already looked very different from the other Dinobots in the cartoon, but I can see it being a bit off-putting. Thankfully there is a fully toy-colors version in Generations Selects, so you have options... if you can find him at a good price.
Like Slug, Swoop's arms and thighs are slimmed down some from the original design. Unlike Slug, however, I don't think this really detracts from his design. Not only was Swoop already on the thinner side, meaning the effect isn't as drastic as it was with the bulkier Slug, but it just makes sense for him to be a bit slimmer, given that he needs to be able to fly.
Swoop's articulation is about on par with Slug's. Ball joints in the neck and shoulders, bicep swivels, and 90-degree elbows. There is a mushroom peg in his waist, but the pterosaur nose actually locks it into place, so you'd have to break transformation to use it as a waist swivel. But he does get ball jointed hips, thigh swivels, more than 90 degrees of bend in the knee, and some play in his ankles. You can also use the wing joints in this mode, in case you want a bit of a different look.
For accessories, Swoop comes with his energo-sword, which actually looks like his original toy's weapon. It's cast in clear plastic, but painted over in red (again like the Transformers toy, the Diaclone version was gold). The handle feels a little loose going in, but it actually stays in nice and securely. You also get a piece of Prime Armor, which is identical to Slug's in design. Swoop has no peghole in his chest, but he can still wear it as armor. There are two slots on either side of his pterosaur head, which connect to tabs on the inside of the thumb pieces. It's actually a pretty secure connection, which I honestly wasn't expecting. That said, I still don't care for the look of the Prime Armor, so I prefer to keep it on his back, where the same thumb tabs connect to slots on the wings, allowing him to wear it securely and unobtrusively.
Combination
Swoop's conversion to arm mode has a couple little oddities that set it apart from other limb robots. The wings pivot down one click so they can fold flat against his arms, and the combiner peg actually comes out of his back instead of his chest. This is also where the cradle piece I mentioned earlier comes in, moving his head out of the way so his combiner peg can fold out all the way. There are tabs to connect the arms to the wings, but they're such a tight fit that they sometimes squeeze themselves out.
In arm mode, Swoop continues to look far skinnier than Slug, which means he doesn't look nearly as powerful. The wings on the shoulder, however, do add a bit of visual flair, almost like an anime super-robot. Then again, the gap for the heel spurs does let you see that the entire forearm is hollow, which can be a bit distracting.
He has all the same joints as Slug in this mode, but due to the extra range in the knees, the elbow now bends much further, almost to 180 degrees. There is a bit of an issue, however, in that the leg joints are loose enough that it's easy to knock things out of alignment, especially when trying to use the bicep swivel. You can actually exploit this to get a more organic looking bicep rotation, but it makes things feel a little awkward, at least to me.
While the arms have special mounting tabs for arm mode, the leg mode simply puts them back in their pterosaur mode configuration. Swoop's legs, meanwhile, retract on double-hinges to suck in the thighs. The wings then fold around like before, but now in the downward position they used in robot mode. Essentially, we're turning Swoop into a flat brick with a Pteranodon head on the front.
While you could kind of see it in arm mode, in leg mode, Swoop's blue torso is plainly visible on Volcanicus's shin, adding a sudden hit of blue to an otherwise predominantly red combiner. Whether you have a problem with this or not is entirely a matter of taste. As someone who generally likes color mixing in his combiners, I think the blue and red work well enough together that it still looks good, but I can see other people finding it out of place with the rest of the Dinobots. If you feel that way, again, you might want to seek out the Selects Red Swoop.
Whether or not you like the look of Swoop as a leg, there is a pretty significant flaw with this mode. While the legs are sucked up past the line of the waist, there's nothing locking them onto the torso, and there's still a bit of range for the hip joints to move. It's only slight, but there's enough play that the slightest shift in weight would be enough to send Volcanicus toppling. So unfortunately, I can't recommend using Swoop as a leg.
Final Thoughts
Power of the Primes Swoop is even more of a mixed bag than his fellow Dinobots have been thus far. While he is a worthy update to the original toy, the weird mix of toy and cartoon colors causes him to lose some of the nostalgic value of the others. While I think he wears the colors well, I wonder if he would've done better to simply release the Red Swoop at mass retail to fit in with the rest of the Dinobots. We would get a fully cartoon-accurate Swoop later on anyway, with the Selects giftset, and a Diaclone colors Swoop similar to this one is the exact kind of thing you'd expect to find in Selects. As it is, I like this figure, but I can't recommend him to G1-toy purists like I did for Slug and Grimlock. Whether or not this figure appeals to you hinges entirely on whether this in-between aesthetic does it for you the way it does for me, or whether you care more about the combination than the coloration.

Godzilla Rewatch: Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla II
Others have ranted about the name so I'll skip it. Seeing Mecha King Ghidorah recovered and used to justify the building of Mecha Godzilla is causing me flashbacks to my bad continuity induced headaches. I exaggerate, but really, leaving the time travel plot alone might have been for the best, but that's not the choice they made. I am amused by the intro narration; “We spent unknowable billions of taxpayer money to make Garuda but it sucks now. MechaGodzilla is the real deal.” They don't wait long to blare out MechaGodzilla's theme music, it's ok because it's pretty cool. I do like how the guy has his work place under camera surveillance so he can get back to looking like he was doing his job just in time, but that ends up being the one trick I find redeeming.Rodan landing so close to a bunch of tents without alerting anyone feels implausible especially given how much focus there usually is on him generating terrible winds just by flying around. It's funny, Rodan seems so short-changed by staying fairly close to his original size while Godzilla doubles in height and the fight between the two is basically Rodan kicking Godzilla's ass until he goofs up and flies right into a tail whip. Which I guess that isn't too different from the fight in Mothra vs Godzilla – maybe it's just favoritism to the older movies while I was never that into the Heisei movies? I think they were partially victims of being over-hyped – it was the 'cool kid' thing to do in the Godzilla fandom back in those early days of the internet, be really into the new continuity instead of those silly old movies and it took me a fair while to start seeing the Heisei movies.Parasite egg is fine and all, but I figure it's only done for the twist. I mean, no way this baby passes for pterosaur, parasite birds lay their eggs in the nests of other birds, not, I dunno, lizards or large insects, they want some chance to deceive the unwitting foster parents. Also: baby sure doesn't have the teeth of an herbivore does it?Pteranadon fanboy is a creep isn't he? Sheesh. “Small flying dinosaurs” is an annoying line too. My niece knew better by the time she was five years old.The first fight with MechaGodzilla is definitely an example of a boring beam battle, though I suppose Godzilla suddenly developing new power to best a MechaGodzilla is arguably a bit of a homage to the first time. The crew's sure lucky Godzilla didn't hold a grudge and was content to just push the robot over. The baby chewing shoes is kind of cute but the whole flying pteranodon robot, how do the kid's say? Cringe, is that right? The kids are supposed to be singing this very unchildish sounding noise and that's fine, but the girl in the darker pink suspenders was making some goofy faces. Not really inspiring much of an opinion on my part, but I noticed it. Oh and their song revives and powers up Rodan. Why not?!They say the only way to lure Godzilla is to use the baby, but that just makes one think of the bird calls in 84/85, or you know, just nuclear power. It actually kind of makes me wonder why they want a killer robot in MechaGodzilla so badly when both Cadmium shells and the anti-nuclear bacteria were pretty effective at incapacitating Godzilla earlier in the series. Retconning I guess. The shipping container sequence – something you're not supposed to be in even when transported by ground – is being carried by helicopter then Rodan destroys the helicopter, catches the container mid-fall and flies off with it and lands, and then and THEN MechaGodzilla and Garuda start blasting at Rodan and like so many in the Godzilla franchise start by aiming low. Probably not as bad as the one Megalon sent flying but still. I gotta feel bad for Rodan here, from his perspective he's just running out to save his baby bro and he gets jumped by a couple of war machines until they land a fatal blow. Good on him for taking out an eye canon though, Godzilla didn't even pull off any damage until he did that reverse polarity thing. The second round with Godzilla fighting MechaGodzilla is better than the first and it's mostly due to what Rodan did to run down MechaGodzilla's weapon systems. The scene of the spinal nerve cluster or “second brain” actually exploding has always made me flinch a bit from how surprisingly graphic the visual is, still does a bit. I wish I could remember where I heard the joke about “Godzilla eats the soul of a pterodactyl” but I just can't off the top of my head. Anyway, I know this was referenced in Godzilla King of the Monsters to also justify a power up, but it's still something that feels "extremely Japanese.” The effects as MechaGodzilla's heat-proof armor starts to evaporate away from the heat Godzilla's generating even without any blasts are are well done, but the feat does feel a bit silly. MechaGodzilla's been seen to have small windows that open when it lands, are we sure it won't melt the windows or something?Poor baby, ditched by their human 'mom' and then intimidated by Godzilla. It doesn't last long, but it's still pitiful. It's kind of dark with hindsight when they talk about how the Godzillas will surely be there for a new age of the dinosaurs in the far future when we all know the big one dies in a couple of movies.

Some have John Arbuckle, Others Scrappy Doo
My nemesis is Kazuma Aoki, the pterodactyl guy from Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993).
Tumblr media
A lesser evil I’ll admit, but this waste of space took up too much of the movie, being a comedic male lead who takes away from the baby godzilla subplot.
Says his hobby is pteranodons and doesn’t even know they aren’t dinosaurs. Hah!

An ALLEGED list of power ups for Revice
Kuuga/Lion Faiz/Pteranodon Kabuto/Bear Den-O/Mammoth Gaim/Mantis Fourze/Gorilla Ex-Aid/Jackal Zi-O/Brachiosaurs (Revi's Robot) Zero-One/Giraffe for Revi and Vice So it goes without saying that none of these make any kind of sense. Hell the theming itself doesn’t make sense, are they going dinosaurs/ancient animals? Modern animals?

for ur epic ask game idea im gonna tell u abt ianto jones my beloved (i apologize in advance for how long thisll probably end up being)
Tumblr media
^ picture bc hes pretty
he works for torchwood except he doesn't rlly have a defined role unlike the others BDKDKFOFOOF something like personal assistant-butler-chauffeur-cleaner-archivist-field agent-teaboy?????? he goes around calling himself a butler but rlly hes kind of the 'does everything' support staff and i wonder how torchwood didn't crash and burn before hiring him. he makes the coffee also and hes very very good at it. coffee is like his specialty. he also knows everything (well. not really but pretty much) like he can tell you from the top of his head how many ppl theyve given amnesia pills to even tho its a number like 2 thousand smthg
he pretends to be all posh but actually hes lowkey a bitch BDJDKDLDO and he was a goth before. (im convinced hes still goth just hiding it) hes also extremely loyal, like 'my girlfriend was turned into a robot soldier and just tried to kill me and all of my friends but i still want to protect her' levels of loyalty. also he was willing to sacrifice his life to save the world some times and he was also willing to sacrifice his freedom to protect ppl from him when he thought he was a serial killer (long story) bc he just has a strong sense of right and wrong and like. while he wont hesitate to defend himself and sometimes hes even had to kill people he would NEVER hurt an innocent person. he doesn't have a great relationship w his family and he lied abt them to his friends for a long long time to make them seem better thn they were (mostly abt his dad who was a horrible piece of shit) and sometimes he lies abt his real role in torchwood to strangers but really its bc he wants to impress people!!! he wants to be liked and admired!!!!! everytime i think abt how much he wanted to impress the team to make them like him again in s1 afrer he betrayed them i get so so emotional. he was in the background for so long but he didn't want that anymore he wanted to be a real part of the team.........
aside from coffee he also likes geo-caching and metal music........ and he helped capture a pteranodon for the hub and he called her myfanwy (no idea how its pronounced) so i guess he has a pet pteranodon...........
also i love him a lot and i would literally die for him
Tumblr media
meet dimples bear the second!!!! i found him earlier but he seemed to fit most for ianto. i think it's cool a bear with different facial features exist and especially so early on (2007)- it shows the potential with how creative they can get!!!
i'm surprised they have either yet to release a coffee scent or that no one talked about it online. i figure cookies that you could dip in coffee could do the trick!
i'd hope he'd be a friend fur life :3
