I can't remember the last I had seen a Rodger & Hammerstein interpretation in movie or even stage. This stage performance was certainly busy, big costumes and loud music. Which isn't a bad thing. To me, it was good but also underwhelming. Like I mentioned in my last post, it's not disney. It's the OG verison, or at least one of the versions. - Visuals, (9/10): One of the best things about Rodger and Hammerstein (R&H) films or plays is that the set pieces and choreography is usually on such a grand and playful scale and this film continues that tradition. I remember always trying to copy the dances until I was out of breathe to this day. I’ll admit that some designs like the inside of Cinderella’s house may be a bit much, but I still love it. - Sound, (8.5/10): the score and songs aren’t that different from the other versions of R&H Cinderella, but with a little 90s R&B flar for some songs and scores. It’s on par with the 1957 version and better than the 1965 version based on what clips I could find to compare. - Story, (7/10): It’s the tale of Cinderella with not much diverging from it. One thing that they added that was interesting, is that the Prince (disgusted as a peasant) meets Cinderella at the beginning and interact as equals before meeting again at the ball. - Character, (8.5/10): Before we had Tiana and all these live-action remakes, Brandy was my first black princess. I remember reenacting the the songs as her or as Whitney hundreds of times to the point that I knew the whole script at one point. Not once did I ever stop the think how a white king and black queen got an asian prince, I just loved how they sung, danced, and the comedic way that they played off of each other. And the same went with the Stepmother, Stepsisters, and Lionel. - Overall, (8.5/10): This would be a 10, but if you take out nostalgia it’s still gets a solid 8.5 or if you’re into musicals then a 9. If I had any complaints, it’s that this isn’t on Disney+ for some reason. It's been a hot minute but how beautiful is rodger and hammerstein's cinderella!? Everything's so big and pretty. Certainly different to what I've grown accustomed to but it's still pretty good.
