Mozzy earned his reputation as one of the most authentic rappers in the game today by staying dedicated to his home neighborhood of Oak Park in Sacramento. Today, the veteran artist announces the tracklist of Children Of The Slums, his next album, which is dedicated to his home neighborhood's lost souls, and those who have lost loved ones to the streets via drugs or violence. The new album features a standout guest spot from Fridayy, who lends his otherworldly vocals to highlight track "LOST IT ALL," as well as spots from Mozzy's longtime collaborators Celly Ru and E Mozzy. Home to lead single "JADED" ft. Eric Bellinger, plus other previously-released fan favorites like "IF I DIE RIGHT NOW" (4 million views on YouTube), a heartfelt tribute to Mozzy's latest grandmother, "MISS BIG BRUH," and "FREE JUJU,"  Children Of The Slums drops on all platforms on Friday April 19th via CMG/Interscope.

Pre-save Children Of The Slums HERE
Children of the Slums arrives after a busy 2023 for the respected rapper. In the Fall, Mozzy released a series of high quality visuals for songs like the heartfelt "If I Die Right Now" and the retributive "Free Juju." Before Mozzy finished up a one-year bid in May, he released KOLLECT KALL, a 6-track EP featuring appearances from YFN Lucci, Baby Money, and his Sacramento associates E Mozzy and Celly Ru, and home to the acclaimed single "FREE ALL THE LIFERS." KOLLECT KALL earned coverage in Pitchfork, Rap Radar, HotNewHipHop,& Okayplayer, and more. The neighborhood hero linked up with a like-minded veteran when he appeared on Killer Mike's GRAMMY Award-winning album MICHAEL, and he kept the streets hot with singles like the flex-heavy "10 Percent" (8.8 million views).
Mozzy's next album continues his run as one of the most acclaimed and popular street rappers of his generation. He has earned two GOLD certifications from the RIAA as a lead artist–"Excuse Me" and "Sleep Walkin–and three more on his collaborations with Skylar Grey, Likybo, and $tupid Young. Mozzy earned mainstream recognition in 2018, when his song "Sleep Walkin" was featured in a pivotal scene in Ryan Coogler's Black Panther, and he earned a shout out from Kendrick Lamar in his Grammy Award acceptance speech. More recently, his street classic "Bladadah" placed #68 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best West Coast Rap Songs of All Time.
Tumblr media
Stay tuned for Children Of The Slums, one of Mozzy's most personal projects to date, coming this Friday.

Mac J — True Story (True Story Ent)
Tumblr media
youtube
When Young Slo-Be was killed in August it was a devastating loss for all hip hop community. It only made sense that Mac J would dedicate his new tape not only to Slo-Be but to Bris as well who was killed two years ago. True Story is a tribute album by the Sacramento MC which was released with a hashtag #LongLiveDaThugs.
True Story is a departure for Mac J. His previous efforts were short and tight. This one lasts more than an hour and consists of 23 tracks. It’s not exactly a baggy monster, but it feels that it was done in haste, like Mac J has just thrown in a few tracks which laid loose on his hard drive. It’s not that Young Slo-Be and Bris don’t deserve a full blown tribute. Trimming the disc by half might provide a moving memorial. True Story is 2021′s 7-song, 20-minute Tricky Situation, Mac J’s best to date, except he’s forgotten to delete all the mediocre tracks.
Mac J’s best weapon has always been puns, but here they’re drowned out. He jokes less and less. You have to dig through whole verses to find good quotes: “I never wear hats so I never turn a cap on”, “I get them bags to your door like I’m bellboy” or “Keep your eyes on that paper, that’s what teacher said.”
It’s not surprising that his mood turns darker. He’s writing about revenge for his fallen comrades. He mourns – and barely holds himself from spraying at the opposition. On every track, he reminds the listeners that he’s ready to avenge his friends. He raps on “Talk 2 Much”: “Make sure to count me in when it’s count time \ I ain’t give a fuck ‘bout yours but about mine.” Even when the production is playful and slappy, the Sacramento rapper has little use for play. He goes straight for threats. Maybe this is the reason why the CD lacks clarity: emotions get in the way of artistry. Half of the tracks are out of focus. Only the hooks hold attention.
As a tribute to the killed partners, True Story is as genuine as it can be. As a piece of art, not so much.

Showtime Ramon - Crossface Crossface
Sacramento, California rapper Showtime Ramon spills his bag of rhymes down the mountain as he climbs to the very top. Through bravado lyricism Showtime flashes light onto the highs and lows of his journey as an MC, clearing a path of his own and distinguishing himself from his peers through the process.
The Hard hitting beat was produced by Zoneto'zen, creating an up tempo sound that gives Showtime the momentum to clear any competition on his uphill climb from the underground to the mountain top. Track 3 from his recently released album Abominable Snowman , Showtime proves to be a promising up and coming star as he competitively elevates through an overly saturated hiphop scene.

SEMATARY SHARES NEW MIXTAPE BLOODY ANGEL
Tumblr media
Sematary, the Northern California-based experimental rapper and producer, has just shared his highly-anticipated mixtape Bloody Angel, along with a music video for the intro "Bloody Angel". Since releasing his pioneering debut mixtape Rainbow Bridge in 2019, backed by fan-favorite tracks like “Bunny Suit” (13M+ Streams) and “Slaughter House” (12M+ Streams), Sematary has gained a massive cult-like fan base, accumulating over 100 Million streams as an independent artist. As the founder and leader of the Haunted Mound collective, Sematary's emerged as the leader of his own wave – pulling elements from the drone-influenced sounds of Salem, and the SoundCloud-era Trap music from Gucci Mane and Zaytoven to create an unforgiving, distorted sound. Typically rapping over blown-out 808s and self-produced guitar riffs, the accompanying deep-fried visuals and haunting aesthetic have become synonymous with Sematary and his movement, evoking the feeling of rural American decay. Pushing the sonic boundaries of genre and meshing all of his influences together into a raucous sound, Sematary has performed at Lyrical Lemonade’s Summer Smash Festival, toured as direct support on $uicideboy$Grey Day stadium tour and kicked this year off with his long-awaited Chief Keef collaboration on “Fuck the World” from the forthcoming FTP mixtape. Following up last year's Butcher House tape, Sematary's fifth project Bloody Angel is out now.
youtube
Backed by its lead singles “Wendigo”, which features a self-produced shoegaze riff and a synth-pop drumline and "Headlights", which features a blown-out 808s and self-destructive lyricism, Bloody Angel is an embodiment of all his artistic influences. After spending the past four tapes pioneering the distorted Trap / Black Metal mashup sound, Bloody Angel finds Sematary fully leaning into these influences and cementing his influential stature in this scene. Boasting select features from Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, Haunted Mound members Hackle and Buckshot, as well as Chicago rapper Lil Flash, Bloody Angel even finds Sematary sampling Darkthrone on "Hearse Truck". While tracks like the intro "Bloody Angel" and "Mordor" push the limits of extreme distortion, tracks like "Demon In Pain" showcase the candid vulnerability behind Sematary's music – capturing the spirit of a true outsider who's stuck to his own sound without paying any mind to mainstream trends.
Tumblr media
The new release of Bloody Angel arrives on the heels of the forthcoming Haunted Mound Angels Tour – kicking off in Florida next week, where he'll be joined by fellow Haunted Mound members Hackle, Buckshot, Oscar18 and Anvil, performing throughout North America before making their way through Europe and the UK. As he continues to lean into his distorted sound and terrorizing aesthetics, Sematary is revitalizing the very sound that he’s spearheaded, taking his brazen self-production to ambitious new heights while contributing to his mercurial status as the pioneer of a burgeoning underground scene that defies trends.

📸 Genius Korea: [EVENT REVIEW] BANG YONGGUK Is A Vibe On 2024 U.S. Tour ‘III’ A/N: posted on 240428
BANG YONGGUK’s ‘III’ THE US TOUR 2024 brings the 34-year-old rapper, singer-songwriter, producer, and art director across a span of 11 cities beginning in April 2024. His most recent stop landed in Northern California, under the intimate lowlights of Harlow’s, which holds nearly 500. Performing in Sacramento for the very first time, Yongguk proved to a crowd of buzzing fans why he’s a powerhouse in his industry.
Yongguk served as the leader of the fan-favorite infamous K-Pop group B.A.P for six years into his career. He is no stranger to packed venues and ferociously loyal fans—to the average viewer, he appears a cool and collected veteran who flows through energetic and soul-scratching discography for nearly two hours. But for true fans of Yongguk who know his story, every performance, no matter the space, means far more than a great setlist and screaming crowds.
Yongguk is not your traditional former idol rapper heralding from Korea’s monolithic pop music industry – his beginnings are rooted in Seoul’s underground rap scene, where his early writing bloomed with the hip-hop group Soul Connection. He was later invited to train and join the eventual overseer of B.A.P, TS Entertainment, where he would slowly feature and debut collab singles and duo projects before promoting with all of the members of B.A.P in 2012.
Regarded as one of the earliest K-Pop groups to attempt gritty, authentic concepts with their hard-hitting lyrics and powerful live performances, the group was able to recruit a passionate following for years before lawsuits, hiatuses, and internal mistreatment by their company plagued the group for the remainder of their career. Despite their undeniable talent, and to the dismay of BABYz (B.A.P’s fandom name), Yongguk was the first to leave the company and the group once their contracts had expired in 2018, with each member following suit shortly thereafter.
There’s a reason for the quick history lesson – I promise.
Like so many others, I’ve been a fan of Yongguk and B.A.P since they were actively promoting. I’ve been following his career for years, from Bang&Zelo (look it up, thank me later), to his solo self-titled album and EPs. Hearing and reading about an artist’s journey is not the same as feeling like you walked the path with them, something I know every longtime fan of Yongguk can attest to experiencing. Watching him grow from a reserved, budding rapper into the assured, multi-dimensional accredited artist he is today has been a gift – then you stick him in front of me in my own backyard, fresh off a new vibey six-track project release? It’s a miracle I wasn’t crawling on the ceiling of the bar like Toni Colette in Hereditary.
Yongguk’s roots in the underground rap scene are still evident in his modern artistry and style – on top of the smaller venue space, DJ Babynine has been opening for him on his US tour. His set was a perfect taste for the rest of the evening, mixing crowd favorites from Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina” to “Water” by Tyla – even throwing in some old-school with Kurtis Blow. It felt like a genuine nod to hip-hop and set the mood for the rest of the show, where Yongguk wasted no time taking the stage and immediately going into a set of older and newer tracks like “OFF,” “Xie Xie,” “Ride or Die,” “IXLU,” “NUMB,” and “RACE.”
The crowd was unstoppable the minute he came out – mind you, this was a room of maybe 100-200 fans. Every song was sung back to him, and every pause to address the crowd was filled instantly with words of affirmation, hollers, and infamous “barking.” Yongguk was caught off guard a couple of times, at one point laughing into the mic and stating: “I love your f*cking energy, Sacramento.” It was a great back and forth as the show progressed, even into slower, more sentimental tracks like “I Remember,” “히키코모리 (HIKIKOMORI),” and “AM 4:44.”
That’s kind of the beauty of Yongguk – his stage presence, coupled with the range of his music, is wildly captivating. He’s towering, a 6'0 handsome man who could still pass for a teenager with his boyish smile, but he opens his mouth, and you’re hit with a husky baritone voice that somehow weaves excellently through his crooning and heavier rapping sections. His lyrics are deeply personal, and you really can’t help but lose yourself in the moment of his music. In fact, “여행 (Journey)” was probably the most silent the room would be all evening – a plucky, bossa nova melancholic track where he explores his sadness feeling lost in life. It’s one of those quiet rarities where the language barrier doesn’t really matter, where everyone can understand as you watch him sing one lone note over and over under a single light, and the rest of the room fades at the edges. As a fan, you already know why you love him, and what, as an artist, he does for you, but experiencing something like that in person confirms why he does this for himself, too.
The second half of the night was a complete vibe switch as he let loose into his most popular hype tracks. Bouncy trap-inspired songs like “UP,” “UFO,” and “BUSS IT DOWN” had the crowd going feral, jumping and bouncing with him as he swayed through hit after hit. Two of his staff members were on stage with him for English translations, and even they were grooving and smiling at fan reactions. I even caught the security guards beside me at one point elbowing each other as bass-destroying head exploder “YAMAZAKI” started, one of them saying: “This is that one you know – it’s dope.”
“MOVIMIENTO” off of his latest EP release is my current hyper fixation, and once it started, I vaguely recall telling the friends I came with “I’m about to go full monkey.” I cannot emphasize enough just how pleasing to the ears this man’s music is, and how there is a little bit of something for everyone in all of his discography. There’s a reason fans ride or die for him, and it was felt in the room when green B.A.P lightsticks and phone flashlights lit up the room for his final setlist track, “Green.” The lyrics are very reassuring and sweet, emphasizing a place of comfort and a shoulder to lean on in hard times, and many fans especially love the title being a nod to the official color of B.A.P’s fandom. Yongguk watched with relaxed shoulders as the crowd showered him with love, a look of pure gratitude on his face as he bowed, thanking fans and heading backstage.
But it didn’t end there – after disappearing beyond the velvet curtain, Yongguk and DJ Babynine returned rocking tour merch and vibing into an encore set. “BUSS IT DOWN” made a reappearance, as well as “야해 (Ya),” “Rain On Me” and “Orange Drive,” and at that point it was a full-blown party. He took special time to laugh with the crowd and thank everyone for coming out, swapped hats and beanies with lucky fans in the front row, even messing with videos and photos by doing cute poses and throwing water on himself and the crowd. My friends and I took part in the revelry, holding heart emojis and kind messages in Korean on our phones up by our foreheads and absolutely losing it every time he pointed and sang his lyrics directly to us. He was a class act, finally taking his bow to an eruption of cheers and officially closing out what was close to a two-hour showcase.
Bang Yongguk’s legacy means far more than a name on a marquee – his artistry not only reflects the early tenacious fire of his humble beginnings but has only developed and matured as time goes on. An artist who has never been afraid of vulnerability and pushing boundaries, Yongguk’s sound and style transcend every venue space into a raw retelling of his inner self. Fans see someone who has dealt with public scrutiny and underestimation, has admitted to personal struggles involving depression, anxiety, imposter syndrome, and even life-ending thoughts, and has chosen again and again to overcome every odd with a vengeance. An industry rarity, Yongguk not only wears his entire heart on his sleeve but invites fans to take a piece of it with them after each and every performance.
We would like to thank BANG YONGGUK’s team for inviting Genius Korea to his show. Be sure to check out his latest album 3 on all streaming platforms with lyrics here on Genius!

NEWS CRIME AND PUBLIC SAFETY
Person of interest sought in I-80 slaying of Bay Area rapper
By NICK SESTANOVICH | [email protected] PUBLISHED: April 1, 2020 at 5:34 a.m. | UPDATED: April 1, 2020 at 5:46 a.m
Based on information provided by the public, the CHP says it has been able to develop a sketch of a person of interest involved in last year’s murder of Robert Edwards Marques on Interstate 80 in Vacaville.
Officer John Fransen, a public information officer with the CHP’s Golden Gate Division, said the agency would not release information on how the new details were obtained, but a public update was posted to the agency’s Facebook page with the sketch in question.
At approximately 6 p.m., June 15, Marques, 33, was murdered on I-80 at the Orange Drive offramp. CHP officers later determined that Marques’ truck was being followed by a newer dark grey or black Toyota Prius moments before he was murdered. The Prius had a partial license plate of “712,” and the CHP wrote in its most recent update that the person of interest was believed to be in the Prius at the time of the homicide.
Marques was living in Sacramento at the time, but he had grown up on Brown Street in Vacaville and attended Country High School. He operated a trucking business called Edwards Freight and was a rapper who recorded under the name “Big Cholo.” His songs have racked up millions of hits on streaming sites, and his death was mourned by other Bay Area rappers. He had an 11-year-old daughter at the time of his death.
