If you watch DBZ then you see that like...
We See Ttunks and Goten separately before we see them interact.
TRUNKS: He is a lively kid. He is excited to see Gohan, and thinks very highly of him. He did think that the Saiyaman outfit was cringe however. He trains with his dad. He seems to have fun being himself. He seems happy and confident.
GOTEN: ough god hes sofunny. He is VERY energetic and very loving. Partly due to age and partly due to who his father is, he is pretty thick-skulled. Definitely naive. Not a pushover, holds his own, but he does defer to Gohan's direction, trusting dearly.
GOTEN & TFUNKS INTEEACTING: immediatly we see something change in Trunks. Goten is the same but Trunks changes. I think it's becasue the expectation of the tournament changes him, hes in public, hes wearing a certain face, etc - but when he was informed that he had to fight in the Junior Division, his voice dropped an octave and he says to Goten smth to the effect of "you hear that Goten? What a load of barnicals."
It makes sense given who Trunks's parents are that he knows how to trash talk in a fight. It also makes sense that Goten didn't know what he was hearing when Trunks was spitting shit with that blond-mullet kid.
Trunks isnt even that particularly arrogant, but hes defintiely a kid who is behaving how he thinks he ought to, I.E. doing the best with what has been modeled for him.
Bless his heart - he didnt even know enough to know to go easy on Mr Satan. No one fucking tells this kid anything.
Goten has no tact or finesse. His father is a genius when it comes to battle, though he had his sloppy moments as a youth - but even accounting for that, Goten isnt the prodigy that Goku was. Unlike Goku, Goten has genuine hobbies and interests other than fighting, so he just cant dedicate all of his soul to that.
And he just lacks tact and finesse. It's becasue he's 7 but to be honest he is 100% DEFINITELY EXACTLY LIKE THAT in DBGT as well.
Goten shoots that kamehame-ha and destroys a bit of the building. Meanwhile Trunks has the foresight to Not blow up the audience with his ki blast. He also had the good sense to suggest that they stop using ki blasts. Trunks has received good training. Meanwhile Goten is out here just going for it
Trunks has a set of inner rules that hes following: he has guardrails: he has a sense of order, he understands where he is in a hierarchy, his spirit is being tamed.
His inner rules are things like: keep it cool, dont let them see you sweat, listen to your parents, have discipline and control in battle, stay resilient, stay prideful, WIN HARD, keep it cool, do what you're supposed to do; the rules for the regular folk dont apply to you becasue you're cooler; do well by yourself, earn your keep, earn your pride, be sneaky and dont get caught.
Meanwhile Goten's inner rules are more like: BE POLITE, mind your manners, always stand back up, be fair, listen to what Gohan says, live and let live, be nice to everyone unless they're mean to you, dont hesitate to defend yourself when you feel slighted.
Goten's rules foster more self-direction and intuition, whereas I feel like Trunks's rules get him all shaken up in the long run. They're less in-the-present-reality based.
When Goten walked out into the arena, he was amazed at how many people there were. Every time he won, he was bashful, and gave a bow.
When Trunks entered the tournament grounds, he slung his bag over his shoulder and walked like his father. He kept his arms crossed against all the other contestants, feeling slighted at having been placed in the junior division to begin with.
Trunks really felt that he deserved better than the Junior Division, and he wasnt wrong at all; but the fact that he saw that, felt that way, and acted on it says a lot about the sorts of values that hes growing up with.
I feel like if it was just Goten, he would have accepted that and had fun.
When Trunks gets to be with just Goten, he becomes a lot more spontaneous, eager, and happy. But he changes when the eyes are on him. At the same time, hes used to people, living in the city and being rich and all. I guess that's why he knows how to behave around them. Or maybe hes just shy like his dad.
Goten didnt know how to act in front of all those people, so he just acted like himself..
But also, Trunks isnt perfectly natural around Goten, becasue he does like to be better than him. Becasue he expects it. Becasue he ought to be. Becasue his dad tells him so. Or, rather, implies it.
BUT when Gohan asked Goten how strong Trunks was, Goten sang his praises and said that he won Every Time. But when Vegeta asked Trunks how strong Goten was, Trunks gave a modest answer, and said that they were pretty well-matched, and he explains their discrepancy likely being due to just age.
IDK. These details fascinated me two years ago when I first saw it and I still like it. It's a good show....

I was thinking about Goku and Krillin's friendship and it occured to me that they spent months training with Roshi together but then only saw each other for maybe a day every few years. Have you ever had a realization that tripped you out like this?
This is a really good ask, anon, and I just wanted to take a moment to say so.
I have had a few ‘a-ha’ moments like these, but I’m kind of blanking on specific examples.  I’ll see what I can come up with.
1) For openers, there’s the whole thing where the Red Ribbon Army has a Dragon Radar, but it’s nowhere near as sophisticated as the handheld one Bulma invented.  I think the same holds true for Emperor Pilaf, but his gang is only three people.   You’d expect the RRA to have the best equipment possible, because that’s their whole deal, and by normal standards they probably do have the best possible Dragon Radar... but Bulma’s is simply that much better, because she’s on another level.   And it’s easy to overlook that, because Bulma’s supposed to be a genius teenager, like Donatello in TMNT, but the RRA’s Dragon Radar is the first hint that she’s even more special than we could have guessed.
2) Rewatching Dragon Ball in 2019, I gained a new appreciation for the filler episodes where Mr. Popo trained Goku.  The first time I saw them, I was hoping we’d see Goku grow up and make progress over the three year gap, but instead they just focused on his early days on the Lookout, with Popo just saying things and Goku failing to understand.  It was very frustrating to watch.
But in 2019, I noticed that all those episodes get paid off in the Piccolo Junior fight.   Popo kept telling Goku to be “quicker than lightning” and “quiet as the sky”, and Goku just couldn’t figure out how to do that, let alone fight at the same time.   He had to unlearn all the stuff that had helped him defeat King Piccolo, and he couldn’t do it... at first.    But by the time he fought Piccolo Junior, he put it all together, as demonstrated with his big finishing move.   Piccolo thought he had vaporized Goku, only for Goku to fly up into the air and crash into him.   Why didn’t Piccolo sense Goku’s presence?   Because Goku had learned to become as “quiet as the sky”.  Why couldn’t Piccolo dodge it?   Because Goku had learned to become “quicker than lightning.”  So it vindicates those filler episodes pretty nicely.   They weren’t just marking time, but they were setting up what the manga was going to do later.
3) I think last year, it hit me that Vegeta had probably never lost a fight before he went to Earth.   That alone isn’t probably any big deduction.  The only people stronger than him were all working for Frieza, and he knew to steer clear of them until he was ready.   But it explains why he was so giddy about the zenkai effect.   He had always known about it, but he never mentioned or cared about it until he experienced it for himself after losing to Goku, and then Zarbon.
Yeah, I think this occurred to me during a conversation about Vegeta killing Nappa instead of helping him.   In theory, Nappa could have recovered and gotten a lot stronger, just like Vegeta did.   But Saiyans Saga Vegeta didn’t care about that.   He only gave his henchmen one chancemand discarded them as soon as they lost.   This attitude would also explain why he never dared to challenge anyone at a higher level.    He knew no one would show him any mercy, so the zenkai boost would have been meaningless to him.
So he might have regretted killing Nappa after he experienced the zenkai firsthand, although he was so drunk on his own increased power that he probably never stopped to consider it.   But before Earth, Vegeta probably dismissed the zenkai as a crutch for lesser Saiyans.   In his mind, a truly great Saiyan never loses battles in the first place.  Or so he believed, until he lost a few times, and became stronger for it, and had to reconsider.
And that also explains how he warmed up to the Super Saiyan Legend over the course of one afternoon.   He and Goku made such sick gains that week that he started to wonder if you could zenkai your way to Super Saiyan, and then he was begging Krillin to shoot him just so he could get a step closer.
4) In the same vein, it occurred to me at some point that Bardock was probably stronger than King Vegeta, and neither of them realized it.   Maybe it was just a dub-ism, but I’m pretty sure “Father of Goku” has a line about Bardock’s power level being 10000.   At the time it was released, 10k wasn’t that big a deal, but in the Saiyans Saga, Vegeta was somewhere around 18-24k. Later, he would claim to have surpassed his father as a child, so I think it’s fair to assume that King Vegeta must have been in that 10,000 neighborhood.
Which makes a nice subtle commentary on why the Saiyan Kingdom failed. They tried to breed better warriors, putting all their stock in the royal family, when the true secret lay in warriors like Bardock, who were constantly getting clobbered and healed.  Prince Vegeta only started to make real progress once he began fighting on that same regimen.
5) Also about “Father of Goku,” Frieza only wanted Planet Kanassa subjugated because of the psychic powers of its inhabitants.   I think the dub insinuated that the planet itself gave people those powers, but whatever the case, Frieza heard about these people with unusual powers and wanted them stamped out immediately.   Just like he wiped out the Saiyans over the Super Saiyan Legend, and just like he planned to destroy Namek to prevent anyone else from using the Dragon Balls.
In short, Frieza fears and despises legends.  Why?  Because he’s so powerful that real people can’t hurt him, so his fears naturally turn to half-truths and folklore.   He chases down ghost stories and rumors, because let’s face it, what else does he have to occupy his time.   That’s why King Cold was happy to have the Saiyans working for him, while Frieza wanted them all dead.   Cold didn’t share Frieza’s hangups.   Cold barely knew what a Super Saiyan was, while Frieza thought about it all the time.
6) One day I thought about that timeline where Cell killed Trunks and took the time machine to find the androids.    That specific timeline is pretty much empty.  The Z-fighters are all dead, and so are all of the androids and Trunks.  They don’t even have a Cell anymore because he went back in time and never returned.   There’s still a population, I guess, because the Trunks of that world wouldn’t have just stood by while Cell absorbed everyone on Earth, but that’s about it.   Bulma might have survived Cell’s attack on Trunks, but she’d be the only “name” character on the board.  It just sounds like a pretty depressing world.   Maybe this was the timeline Whis picked out to relocate Blunks and Future Mai in Dragon Ball Super.
7) It sort of blows my mind that the entire Majin Buu arc takes place over a couple of days.    Like, episode 207 through 250 all takes place over one day.   We know this because Goku only had 24 hours to be back in the living world, and that time was cut short by his use of SSJ3.  Then the Elder Kai started doing his ritual to make Gohan stronger, and that took like 25 hours, I’m pretty sure.  That wrapped up in #262, and there was no break in the action from that point onward, all the way up to the defeat of Kid Buu in #287.  So yeah, eighty episodes over two days.   It’s practically real-time footage, save for skipping over the Elder Kai’s ritual and Goten and Trunks practicing and sleeping.
It’s hard to catch on to this, though, because so much stuff happens in the anime version that leads you to think that it’s a much longer span of time.    After Vegeta wrecks the stadium, the anime can’t decide whether or not Mr. Satan would stay there or return to his dojo.   In the Fusion Saga, Mr. Satan wanders from Buu’s house to the nearest town, then he wanders to the next town over, doing his “Last Man on Earth” bit, except this all happens during the Gotenks/Super Buu fight, which barely lasts half an hour.   In the afterlife, Chi-Chi is worried that she can’t find Gohan, but she wouldn’t have even been there that long, and wouldn’t she still be in line to meet King Yemma?  She was one of the last Earthlings to die, so how did she end up in heaven so quickly?
8) I used to think Movie 13 (the Hirudegarn one) was canon, but the last time I watched it, I noticed all these glaring problems.  They use the Dragon Balls in this one, which means it has to be set six months after the wish to make everyone forget about Majin Buum which means it’s been a year since Kid Buu was defeated.  Okay, fine, except Gohan and Videl are still in high school.   Shouldn’t they have graduated by then?
More importantly, their high school and Bulma’s house seem to be in the same city.   I guess that’s an easy mistake to make.   It took me a long time to even notice, but Orange Star High is in Satan City, which is a totally different place from West City.   I mean, right?  They’re not terribly far apart, but they’re not the same place either.
Then again, they seemed to make the same error in Episode 287, where Bulma’s out shopping and Great Saiyaman 1 and 2 foil a robbery.   Are they in West City or Satan City?  Maybe there’s more to this...

Drew head canon designs of what I guess Videl might have looked like durning moments of DBZ she wasn’t see in. I always thought it was boring when I saw a younger Videl just made exactly like how she looked durning the Great Saiyaman arc/Highschool episodes but younger.
The first one is the Saiyan Saga and Frieza Saga I assume her mother was still around and at this point in time she’d be somewhere between 4 and 6. That’s prime my mom picks out my clothes and dresses my hair age so she’s wearing more girly clothes.
The second one would be around the filler Garlic Junior arc and being of the Android Saga when Trunks gave Goku the medicine and told him of the Android attack. Videl would be about 7 at this point in time and her tomboyish nature would start showing more as she was probably now able to pick out her own clothing.
The third one would be the Android Saga post time skip and the Cell games. By this point Hercule has become famous by winning the World Martial Arts Tournament (probably now where near as famous as he’s going to be after the Cell games). At this point I based Videl’s design to look a bit more like how she first appeared but not exactly like it. The black skin tight shorts (but longer she’s like 10, I ain’t drawing booty shorts on a 10 year old) and the lower Pigtails. The big kiddy smile now a softer version of the Videl Glare™. She probably got to officially start being trained in Martial arts by this point but probably no where close to how she’d been 7 years later.
The forth one is the Android Time Line/History of Trunks. I’d like to imagine she was similar to how Mai was in the Goku Black arc and tried to lead and protect a group of survivors in Orange Star City unknown if she was really successful or not though. Her hairstyle is based off a version of Videl that appeared in Dragon Ball Muliverse (forgot where though) and tried to show she carries a pistol and knife on her. (Bonus: As for if she ever met Gohan I like to believe she witnessed him fighting the Androids at least once. Gave her hope that there’s at least one person out there who can fight back against them.)
I’m also thinking of trying to do the other members of the Orange Star crew Sharpner and Erasa.

*sighs* “Okay, I kinda did a ‘Saiyaman Junior’ gimmick in high school like Dad. And, I do another superhero thing with Rez*. So, I guess a bit?
I’m not sure about Vegeta though. He wouldn’t be caught dead doing such things.”

Dragon Ball Z 289
Tumblr media
So we’ve finally reached the home stretch of Dragon Ball Z.   These last three episodes are set ten years after Episode 288, and this period is colloquially known as “End of Z.”
Tumblr media
Why do an epilogue ten years in the future?   Well, there’s a specific reason that’ll become clear in the next two episodes, but I think it’s a handy way to establish that nothing terrible happened for at least ten years following the Buu conflict.   Also, this era roughly coincides with the date that Future Trunks arrived from in Episode 120.  In case there was still any lingering confusion, that dystopian future has clearly been averted.   Kid Trunks is now the same age Future Trunks was when he first appeared, but there’s no androids or anything for him to worry about.   His biggest problem is that his aircraft is slower than his own ability to fly.
Tumblr media
At least, I always assumed that’s why this part of the story opens on Trunks.   He really doesn’t get a lot to do in this.    He flies to Goku and Chi-Chi’s house, hoping to visit Goten, but Chi-Chi doesn’t know where he is, so he goes next door to ask Gohan.
Tumblr media
I guess over the past decade, the Son family made some upgrades to their home, and Gohan lives right next to them.   Trunks finds the door unlocked, so he just walks right in.
Tumblr media
There’s some establishing shots of the house, but the main feature is a photo of Gohan and Videl from their wedding.  They didn’t look like this when Gohan was handing out wedding photos in Dragon Ball Super, but what can you do?
Tumblr media
Anyway, Gohan couldn’t come to the door because he’s busy taking books down from his enormous shelves.  Also, he has glasses, which are supposed to tell you he’s all intellectual.
Tumblr media
Oh, and he’s even got the pencil in his ear.    Lay it on thicker, why don’t you.
Tumblr media
I never understood Gohan’s career as a “great scholar”.   This episode makes it clear that he became one, and that with Buu’s defeat, he was finally free to pursue that life, but I have no idea what kind of “academic meeting” he’s talking about, or why he needs all those Charles Darwin books to prepare.
Tumblr media
Anyway, I’m happy for Gohan.    There’s people who wanted him to be this unstoppable badass, or they’re salty that he didn’t become the main character of DBZ, but this is alll he ever wanted out of life.   His own place, not too far from his parents, and a ton of books to read.
I suspect that’s why Videl fell in love with him, because as much as she wanted to know about the Great Saiyaman and the Golden Warrior and the kid who beat Cell, the real Gohan is pretty much the awkward guy he was trying to be when they first met.   Yeah, he was keeping secrets, but he wasn’t disguising himself.   And I know there’s fans who wish Videl would have continued fighting and training until she became strong enough to beat up Goku, but I think in the end, this is the sort of quiet life she always wanted too.    She just needed to meet Gohan to realize it.
Tumblr media
While they talk, Mr. Satan appears on TV in an ad for the 28th Tenkaichi Budokai.
Tumblr media
Videl is embarassed at her father’s antics, but he really did save the world from Majin Buu, so it’s not like he isn’t entitled to some of this.   But Videl points out that no one remembers what he saved the world from, because of the wish Goku made to make everyone forget Majin Buu.
Anyway, Gohan tells Trunks that Goten is out somewhere sparring with Goku, and that Bulma and Vegeta are there too.    So I really have no idea why Trunks came here alone.
Tumblr media
Look how pissed these two are.   What is their problem?
Tumblr media
Anyway, Goku and Goten are indeed sparring, and Goten doesn’t seem to be enjoying it much.
Tumblr media
Bulma’s mad because they almost never see Goku anymore unless they come to him, and Goku says they dropped by five years ago.
Tumblr media
Then he observes how old Bulma looks now.  Let’s just do the math really quick... Yeah, Bulma is 51, while Goku would be 47.
Tumblr media
Vegeta explains that Saiyans remain in their prime longer as an evolutionary trait that lets them fight longer, but Bulma believes she looks very young for her age, and besides, she can just use the Dragon Balls to make herself younger if need be.
Tumblr media
Anyway, the point of this whole visit is that Vegeta heard Goku was planning to enter the World Tournament tomorrow, and he wants to know why.   Goku thinks that there’s a strong fighter appearing at the tournament, and he wants to face him at the event.   This intrigues Vegeta, who suspects an alien or another android, but Goku insists that he’s a fully human Earthling.    Bulma doesn’t see how that’s possible, but Goku’s so sure of this that he’s making Goten enter the tournament as well.
Tumblr media
And he’s entering his grandaughter Pan too.   I’m oonfused here, because in the previous scene Videl called for Pan to clean her room, but now we see she just got back from flying around the circumference of the planet.   Maybe she snuck out of the house, or Videl just didn’t realize she wasn’t home.   Goku says that she probably won’t win, but she’s got a lot of power, and he thinks she’ll perform well.  This is enough to convince Vegeta to enter the tournament as well, and he threatens to slash Trunks’ allowance unless he joins in.   Yeah, like Vegeta gives Trunks an allowance.   I think what he means is that he won’t give Trunks as big a cut of the allowance he gets from Bulma.
Tumblr media
So the next day we see the tournament grounds ago.    I just want to point out that Chi-Chi is the only one who got a better hairdo over the past ten years.   Videls’ bob is all right, but it’s not as good as the pixie cut, just sayin’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Goku and Pan wander around the place for a while.    By now, the Tenkaichi Budokai has become almost a complete carnival.  The 21st tournament was pretty subdued by comparison, but this thing’s got merch stands, arcades, and cartoon mascots.
Tumblr media
I like the part where they eat hot dogs together, because in the dub, part of Goku’s reason for returning to the Tenkaichi is that the stadium hot dogs were so good.
Tumblr media
Then some kid knocks over Pan and makes her drop her ice cream while he’s trying to steal a bunch of watches.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Goku’s afraid that she’s going to end this boy’s entire life right in front of everyone...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But instead, she cries because dogs are eating her ice cream.   Awwwwwwwwww.
Tumblr media
So Goku gives her his ice cream to calm her down.   He already ate an entire carton out of the freezer for breakfast this morning, so he’s good.
Tumblr media
Vegeta’s family shows up, and they have a daughter now named Bulla.  Honestly, I’m not sure why Toriyama bothered introducing Bulla, since she does so little in these episodes.    Maybe he was helping Toei flesh out the cast of GT, except GT didn’t do much with her either.   Maybe he just wanted to make it known that Bulma and Vegeta had sex more than once.
Tumblr media
Krillin’s the only one who looks that much older.  Part of the trouble “End of Z” created for the franchise is that the characters in Dragon Ball Super probably ought to resemble these designs, but they usually dont.   We never see Roshi get his other sunglasses, and Krillin shaves his head again instead of turning grey and getting a terrible hat.  And GT is set after “End of Z”, which means they had to make the character look even older, which is why Krillin looks like a miniature Gabe Kaplan on that show.
Tumblr media
But let’s check in on Mr. Satan, who’s going over the tournament with Majin Buu.   Satan’s lost some hair, but Buu hasn’t changed at all.    What I really love is how Bee’s grown up into a big ol’ dog who just sleeps by the recliner all day.    He borked at Super Buu and Kid Buu a lot over the past 35 episodes, but it was all worth it.   He got his pals home safe and sound, and now he can eat bananas whenever he wants.
Tumblr media
Anyway, ever since Majin Buu came to live with Satan, he’s been rigging the Tenkaichi Budokai by having Buu act as his prize student.   Majin Buu defeats the other fighters, and then he faces Mr. Satan in the final match, and lets him win.   I guess Android 18 taught him the value of cheating.  This would make Satan a four-time Tenkaichi Budokai champion, but he only wone one of those titles legitimately.
Tumblr media
Here’s this, by the way.
Tumblr media
So, Mr. Satan was planning on having Buu do the same bit again for this tournament, except Goku, Vegeta, and their kids are planning to enter, which shakes things up a bit.   But Goku promises that they’ll let Satan win the final match if any of them make it that far instead.
Tumblr media
There’s a quick gag where Mr. Satan gets seats for his friends, but he puts them right at ringside, which is apparently really awkward?  I dunno, that seems like the best place to be.   A lot of these characters used to be in these events, watching from that entranceway.
Tumblr media
So they ask Mr. Satan to intervene again, and he sets them up with this VIP Skybox looking thing.  I don’t know, the view might be better, but it seems kinda chincy to me.
Tumblr media
Then the contestants come out for the bracket draw.   Goten promises to avenge his loss to Goten in the 25th Juniors Division match.   Incidentally, there is no Junior Division this time, so Pan just has to fight grown men.
Tumblr media
Somehow, Majin Buu became really popular with the ladies.  Don’t hate the player, hate the game.
Tumblr media
And here’s the field of twelve.  Now, you might say that isn’t enough for a proper single elimination tournament, but don’t worry, we’ve only got two episodes left.    It’s not going to get that far.

Dragon Ball Z 209
Tumblr media
This is the “Fuck All Cameras” Episode, which is kind of awesome, but also a little outdated in this age of smartphones.    If Piccolo blew up my phone just to keep me from taking pictures of his friends, that’d be really inconvenient.    My boarding pass for the flight home would be on there, for example.
Tumblr media
We open on this dude, who’s just doing martial arts stunts for a crowd of bystanders.   Who is he?   We never find out, but he does look pretty cool.
Tumblr media
This somewhat less cool-looking dude shoves him out of the way before we can learn anything about him, and this reporter lady starts interviewing him instead.
Tumblr media
So it’s the 25th Tenkaichi Budokai and Videl’s here to enter, but she also specifically wants to fight Gohan, so she’s trying to find him.     Instead she runs into Sharpner, who for some reason is now madly in love with Videl.    I mean, I don’t blame him, Videl’s awesome and all, but we saw none of this in Sharpner’s previous appearances.   He sat next to her in school, so I guess he was trying to get close to her until he was ready to shoot his shot.    But now he’s wearing a suit and offering her a bouquet of roses, so this seems awfully sudden.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Basically, Sharpner’s throwing out everything he knows to try, and he can’t even get Videl to turn around.    This is downright painful to watch.    Some dork probably told Sharpner to “just tell her how you feel” and here he is doing it and he’s going down in flames.   You can make the argument that his approach here is kind of crappy, but it doesn’t matter, because he doesn’t have a chance here and he never did.   Videl didn’t cut her hair for Sharpner, she did it for the boy who taught her how to fly.    There’s no topping that, and he doesn’t even know that’s what he’s up against.
I don’t know, I feel for Sharpner here.   That feels weird to say, because he’s presented as kind of a dick, but he’s not that bad.    Yeah, he tried to pick on Gohan a little, but by the end of the day he respected him for being tougher than he looks.   Vegeta beat the shit out of Gohan multiple times, and everyone loves that guy.   I’m not saying Sharpner “deserves” Videl or anything, but it sucks that he clearly worked up a lot of courage to make this big play for her affections, only to find out that he’s a bit player in someone else’s story.
Tumblr media
Likewise, this little girl overheard Sharpner’s invitation to go to some stand that sells fruit juice, and she’s smitten.    Sharpner’s the handsomest guy she’s ever seen, he’s really old, like maybe ten.   He’s offering to buy her juice and she’s taking him up on it.    Apple, please!     But alas, he wasn’t talking to her, and she’s just a bit player in his story, just as he is for Videl’s.
This is why I don’t respect people who just blow this story off as being nothing but guys screaming at each other for ten episodes.   Yes, it has that.    It makes time for that.  But there’s also a lot of exploration of the human condition in this thing.  You just have to be willing to root around for it.
Now, let’s hurry up so we can talk about the Punching Machine.
Tumblr media
This shot of Goku strolling through the tournament grounds is awesome.   He’s got his best friend and his grown-up son with him, it’s just really great to see.    The funny thing is, Goku’s only been absent from the show for a handful of episodes, but it still feels like it’s been seven whole years.    It’s just awesome to have him back, and in his old stomping grounds, ready to kick some ass and hug some children.
Tumblr media
Trunks isn’t sure what to make of Goku, but he thinks his own dad is stronger.  Goten replies that Gohan always said Goku was the “strongest in the universe”, which is weird because Gohan was demonstrably stronger than Goku before he died.    Modesty’s one thing, but it’s strange that Gohan would just flat-out say something like that.    I mean, Gohan honestly had no idea that he had surpassed Goku until Goku asked him to fight Cell.  Could it be that he still can’t accept his superiority on that day, even after all this time?
Tumblr media
Goku can’t get used to seeing Krillin with hair.    He asks why he stopped shaving it, and 18 walks by.   Well, it’s not because 18 likes the hair better.   She shaved his head in Res F and seemed to like him better that way, or at least that was my take.
Tumblr media
Then Goku finally notices 18 and he’s all “What’s she doing here?”
Tumblr media
And Krillin’s like “Me, Goku.   She’s doing me here.   That’s your answer.”
Tumblr media
Goku’s all “How’d you have a baby with a robot?” and Krillin has to explain that 18 was never a robot, just a human with cybernetic enhancements.    This is a polite way of saying 18 has reproductive organs.    This feels like a bit of a retcon to me.   19 and 20 had entire chunks of their bodies chopped off, and they appeared to be wholly metallic, except for some fluid that might have been blood, and Dr. Gero’s human brain.    17 and 18 claimed to be modified humans, like Gero/#20, but we never saw either of them take any heavy damage, so it was never clear how much of them was still human.    At the time, it didn’t especially matter, but once 18 settled down with Krillin and had a baby, it was worth clarifying that this was possible for her.   But if she had been in some epic battle and half of her face got ripped off, she’d probably turn out to be metal underneath, and the implication would be that she was just a brain in a robot body like Gero.  It just depends on what direction the character went in.  Schrödinger’s uteurs.
Tumblr media
Later, Gohan runs into Videl, but he explains to her that he’s entered as the Great Saiyaman, so she has to call him that for the whole day.   Then she shows off her flying ability to him, but she gets kind of frustrated that she can’t keep up with him.
Tumblr media
Then Sharpner runs into them, and he quickly gets the impression that Videl is sweet on this Great Saiyaman person, if that is his real name, which it isn’t.
Tumblr media
Gohan tries to leave, probably because he’s afraid Sharpner might recognize him from school, but Videl decides to play along.  She doesn’t actually tell Sharpner that she’s dating Great Saiyaman, but she doesn’t deny it either.    You can tell from the way she smiles that she enjoys watching him think about it.
Tumblr media
Also, when the tournament contestants are summoned to the preliminaries, she takes Gohan’s arm in hers, just to twist the knife.   Gohan’s even more unnerved by this, because, as Uncle Raditz once told him, he’s one of the mighty Saiyans too.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Raditz, is that him posing in his underwear for a bunch of fans?    Is that Luffa on the far left?     Computer, zoom in sector 4 and enhance!
Tumblr media
I mean, it’s not the standard color, and I’m not even 100% sure that’s supposed to be a woman, but the skin tone and the swagger are there.    This isn’t a fan, either.   You can tell by the gym bag she’s carrying....... which must contain her usual fighting clothes.    It’s perfect.    Anyway, she’s here to scold Raditz for skipping Tail Day.
Tumblr media
So this reporter and camera crew are trying to get interviews with the contestants, but Vegeta and Piccolo blow them off.
Tumblr media
Goku’s more accomodating, but they don’t understand what he means when he says he’s dead and he’s only visiting for the day.
Tumblr media
And that’s when Piccolo gets fed up and starts blowing up cameras.    Maybe he just doesn’t want Goku explaining the afterlife to the media?
Tumblr media
Then we see this dude signing autographs... Is this Jonathan Joestar?
Tumblr media
I mean, am I on drugs today?   This episode is full of cameos.    I came for the exploding cameras, but I stayed for the JoJo references and OC photobombs.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Sharpner has made it his business to unmask Great Saiyaman and expose his identity to the world.  Not sure how or why that would improve his standing with Videl, but I think at this point he’s just upset and this is the only outlet he has for his anger.    I would give him credit for not stalking Videl or anything weird like that, but that may be more self-preservation than discretion.    Videl would kick his ass in two seconds and he knows it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Z-Fighters all assemble in the area for the preliminaries, where all the other competitors are.   A bunch of them are working out with weights to pass the time.    I really don’t get that.    This just seems like a bad time to lift, you know?    Also, why bring dumbbells with you.   You have to lug them around the whole time, check them on the flight, etc.
On the other hand, I totally get that guy on the left who’s stone cold taking a nap.   I guess this is why I never had any talent for combat sports.
Tumblr media
Hey, guess who it is?   It’s the World Tournament Announcer!    He’s still hosting this thing, and he’s delighted to see Goku, Krillin, and Piccolo return.   As far as he’s concerned, these events are downright dull without awesome guys like these to make them cool.   WTA’s gotten spoiled on gonzo super brawls, and now regular fighting just doesn’t do it for him anymore.
So the funny thing about all of this is that WTA is one of the few people who know that Goku and his friends beat Cell, and not Mr. Satan.   King Furry figured it out, based on his recollection of Goku fighting King Piccolo, and he announcer knows it because he witnessed Goku’s battle with Piccolo Junior.   That, and WTA watched Mr. Satan win the 24th Budokai, which must not have been nearly as impressive as the Goku/Piccolo battle from the 23rd.
Tumblr media
Also, WTA is thrilled to see Goku’s brought even more cool dudes to join the action.  He doesn’t understand Goku’s halo, but he still hasn’t made sense of Krillin’s resurrection from back in the day, so by now he’s just given up on trying to figure it out.   He only asks that Piccolo doesn’t blow up the ring again, and Piccolo’s all “We’ll see,” which is probably exactly what WTA wanted to hear.    Yeah, he doesn’t want the ring destroyed, but he likes the idea that it could happen at any time with this crew.    Piccolo’s a master showman.
Does WTA remember that Piccolo’s the same guy who tried to conquer the world?   He revealed himself at the 23rd Budokai, but the announcer doesn’t seem to remember, or maybe he figured out that Piccolo turned face by the Cell Games.
In any event, Gohan is pleased to see that there’s at least one person who knows and respects his father’s greatness.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Sharpner tries to jump on Gohan from one of the rooftops, hoping to pull off his sunglasses, but Gohan bends down to pick up something at the last second, so it goes pear-shaped in a hurry.
Tumblr media
Holy fuck he was picking up Captain Ginyu!   This episode is truly a cavalcade of stars!
Tumblr media
Also, Sharpner hit the pavement so hard he cracked it, and yet he’s still alive and unhurt, which lends to my theory that even ordinary people in Dragon Ball are much, much stronger than real-world people.   Bulma could kick Brock Lesnar’s ass, is what I’m saying.  He’d F5 her and she’d just jump back up and bitchslap him so hard that it’d break his neck.   The cops couldn’t arrest her for murder because she’d be too strong for their feeble handcuffs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later, Sharpner gets a kid to pull off Gohan’s sunglasses while he lurks nearby with the camera.   It’s too fast for him to recognize him on sight, but he knows the camera got a good shot, but then Piccolo destroys it, along with every other camera in the vicinity.    So that takes care of Sharpner.
Okay, just to explain for younger readers, back in the day cameras relied on film, which had to be chemically developed before you could see the picture you took.   So that’s why Sharpner didn’t just look at the photos he’d taken before it was too late.   I think camera film is still common knowledge, but I’m trying to make sure this blog post will make sense in case someone finds it on archive.org in 2030.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Piccolo just flat out explains that he destroyed every camera in the area.  There’s a real Ron Swanson energy to Piccolo.    “I don’t like flash photography so I murdered all of the cameras.   You’re welcome.”   Seriously, though, he did it just so Gohan can fight without fear of his disguise falling off.   He’s a good friend.
Tumblr media
So, in past tournaments, the preliminaries were this single-elimination tournament to choose eight fighters for the quarterfinals.    This time around, they have a much faster system: The Punch Machine.     Basically, everyone has to punch a device that measures how hard you hit, and the top 15 scorers get to participate in the tournament.    The 16th slot automatically goes to Mr. Satan, since he’s the defending champion.
While the Z-Fighters are amused and/or disgusted by Satan’s antics, I think it’s pretty awesome how he comes out, holds up his title belt, and greets the other fighters by asking “Who among you will surpass me?!”     I think in the dub he shouts “Who wants this?!” referring to his title belt.    He knows one of these guys might beat him.   If not today, then some day, and for all his glory-seeking, he accepts that.    Plus, he gets the crowd all fired up.    Goku just isn’t built that way.
Tumblr media
So Mr. Satan does the first punch, which I guess is meant to establish a frame of reference for the machine.   It scores him at 137, and I assume everyone thinks no one else can top that, since he’s thought to be the strongest man in the world.
Tumblr media
While the gang lines up for their turn, Goku asks if Tien and “them” are coming.    He really doesn’t know Chiaotzu’s name, does he?    Is he using “them” to refer to Launch too?    Or is he just not sure of Chiaotzu’s gender?    Maybe he thinks Tien married a robot too.    He has no idea.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Krillin explains that Tien probably won’t be here.   “No, dude, he just looked at us and said ‘I’m leaving now.   Goodbye forever.’  And then we never saw him again.   Pretty sure he’s not coming.”
Tumblr media
All ofthese girls are here to cheer on Videl for when she takes her turn on the Punch Machine.   Are they friends from school?  Where’s Erasa, then?   It seems a bit odd that they’re allowed back here, unless they’re entered in the tournament too, and they don’t appear to be dressed for it.
Tumblr media
Anyway, this Punch Machine business really annoys Vegeta.   Is that Nappa behind him?   Wow.
Tumblr media
18 takes her turn, and she tries to hold back, but she ends up getting a score of 774.    Whoops.
Tumblr media
Krillin scolds her for this, because now the officials think the machine is broken.    She tries again and gets like a 206, which is still suspicious, but at least they can sort of buy that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So the others just sort of barely tap it to get believable scores, but even so, they’re still higher than what the officials would have expected.
Tumblr media
This is especially shocking to Videl, who hasn’t met the Z-Fighters yet.
Tumblr media
So then it’s finally time for Vegeta’s turn.    As it turns out, this marks the start of an epic battle, one of my all-time favorites.    You don’t see a lot of talk about this one, but Vegeta vs. Punch Machine is a real classic.   Over the course of the next six episodes we’ll--
Tumblr media
Uh...
Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
PUNCH MACHINE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Tumblr media
Videl is stunned.    Punch Machine was her godfather, but now it’s just a bunch of scrap metal.    And that red cushiony part on the front.
Tumblr media
Look at this heartless bastard.   He killed Punch Machine and he doesn’t even care.  It had one more day till retirement.    I... I can’t go on anymore.
Tumblr media
Yeah, that’s the Great Saiyaman Saga.    Not so great, actually.   They should call him Stand-Around-And-Let-Punch-Machine-Get-Murdered Saiyaman, because that’s what actually happened.    I guess “justice” is only for humans and cat people now.    Way to drop the ball, Saiyaman.

2019DBLiveblog Index (Draft)
The Dragon Ball liveblog is getting kind of  meat-normous, so I’m working on tagging everything by sagas and putting together an episode index so people can find stuff more easily.
For right now, I’m just going to slap what I have in this post.   Eventually, I’ll make a more permanent page on this blog.
I’ll probably go back and do the same for my 2017 viewing/reading of JJBA, and probably Luffa too, since those are the other two huge features I’ve generated on here.    But let’s start with this and see how it goes.
