speaking of genbu's "serious" sounding tone in his voicebank, i think that might be why he was such a dead ringer for teto pre-synthv-bank-release with just a couple little gender parameter tweaks. wait do my followers know this. sorry i know most of my vocal synthesizer talk is genuinely gibberish to my beloved and loyal long time followers but do you guys know this. for a few years, people had discovered that since utau teto and genbu have this similar strong enunciation and dark sounding tone plus teto can have a bit of a tomboyish edge to her voice anyway -> if u mess with some parameters and phonemes he'll sound close enough to her, so it became a bit of running gag in the community, along with just being a genuine and novel use case for his voicebank. actually recently i found out about someone who made a couple of synthv scripts to set genbus voice to his falsetto pitch and set the tension to drop during each syllable automatically to make him sound like the utau sora amaha. genbu's purpose is to impersonate other vocal synthesizers

Iruka Umino is still awake and grading when Kakashi jumps in through his window. He's not expecting the smoke bomb to the face that opening the window triggers and he ends up falling off the window sill and onto the ground three stories below. He cushions the impact with chakra so it doesn't hurt, but still.

Iruka leans out the window, blinking down at him blearily. "Hatake? Aren't you out of village?"

"You taught Naruto about pranking," he accuses, hands on his hips.

He scratches the scar on across his nose. "I taught Naruto basic ninja skills, just like the rest of my students. How he applies those skills is his own business."

"Can I come in?" Kakashi asks, not really wanting to continue this conversation where anyone could overhear them.

Iruka's eyes narrow but he shrugs and steps away from the window. Kakashi decides to take that as an invitation and jumps back up, slightly more cautious as he steps inside the apartment.

“Tea?” he asks, already moving towards the stove.

“Sure,” he says. “What can you tell me about my kids?”

Iruka doesn’t so much as blink. “What do you want to know?”

He wants to know how well these little schemers have been scamming the village. But he can’t say that, so he has to go after this a little sidewise. “Our C rank turned into an A rank. They faced the Demon Brothers and the Demon of the Mist.”

He’s expecting an explosion – Iruka is notoriously overprotective of his students, and fond of Naruto on top of that – but instead he just frowns. The silence stretches on until it’s interrupted by the kettle. Iruka pours the water into the teapot, finally saying, “That must have been quite a surprise.”

Annoyingly ambiguous. He has to be doing it on purpose. “You’re not concerned?”

“You’re back and you’re here. That wouldn’t be the case if any of them were dead,” he answers, which is true. Damn.

“Why didn’t Sasuke graduate early?” Kakashi asks. “He’s certainly capable of it.”

All of them are capable of it, but if Iruka doesn’t already know then Kakashi isn’t going to reveal the secrets that his kids have gone to so much effort to maintain.

Iruka holds out a cup of steaming tea to him. “Children should be able to set their own pace. If I have a child that does not want to graduate early, then what I have is a child who is not ready to graduate early.”

They could just be talking about Sasuke. “What about Naruto?” he asks. “You passed him even though he failed the exam.”

Iruka’s face darkens, which isn’t the reaction Kakashi had expected from mentioning his favorite student. “A failing of childhood, especially a ninja one, is the belief that they’re responsible for things adults are meant to handle. When a child acts in accordance to that belief, the behavior and accompanying consequences must be corrected.”

He knows. He must have figured out that Naruto failed on purpose to draw out Mizuki, which means he knows that Naruto was capable of graduating all along.

“Any tips?” Kakashi sighs, holding the tea cup between is hands so the warmth can sink into his skin.

Iruka smiles. He doesn’t think Iruka has ever smiled at him before. It’s kinda nice. “Despite appearances, they’re good kids. You’ll be fine.”

He’s not so sure, but he appreciated the sentiment.

how many times have u read/watched naruto? i’m js curious bc u catch so many things! also, wld u agree that sakuino serves as a foil for sasunaru? i js think it’s interesting how love is at the crux of both rivalries, tho for sns it brought them together (as much as it cld) despite their time apart while sakuino’s rivalry/friendship was disrupted by love (sakura’s inclination for sasuke..) wld love to hear ur thoughts!

why would sakura and ino’s rivalry over a guy that wants nothing with either of them would serve as foil to naruto and sasuke’s rivalry? only if it’s to show how shallow of a character sakura is honestly. naruto and sasuke have mutual admiration, they want to reach for the other but fear the other’s rejection, they mistake their jealousy for the other over a rivalry because they were “lonely kids starved of love that found nothing but hatred”, they just can’t deal with their feelings properly, there are layers and layers for their rivalry and overall relationship. meanwhile ino took sakura under her wing and helped her build her confidence just to be ditched the moment sakura found out they were interested in the same guy, because she is that shallow, and that’s literally the reason they are rivals, they fight over a guy’s attention, wouldn’t say it’s love either because they both have shallow crushes on sasuke. vote1 has more layers than all of ino and sakura’s interactions in the manga, i doubt kishimoto would honestly write any sakura related content being a foil to naruto and sasuke unless if it was to show how much incapable she is of having any impact

This is............... a complicated thing to answer.

Naruto is not good.

The world building starts off intriguing but falls flat on its face as you realize how fucking... insular the story is (the country/village Naruto belongs in was founded literally 2-3 generations ago, like the leader who takes over when Naruto is 13 is the grand daughter of the founder).

The morality of the story is fucking all over the place and it is EXTREMELY frustrating how much potential early Naruto's messaging has (confronting the shortfalls of founding an economy/nationstate on war, impacts of trauma, manipulation of youth, even on fighting destiny) and how much it goes exactly waht it originally set out to say.

The story gets sidelined and it spends like... 100+ chapters on a war you do not care about and has little to do with like... the actual OG story. Like... it becomes about an alien/goddess thing who was like... not at all foreshadowed. Lots of retcons happen mid story to change character dyanmics and motivations and it's clear quite a few of them were not planned.

I can't even say the charactrs are particularly good. I love Sasuke but he disappears for dozens of chapters at a time and he's not allowed to ever fully live up to his potential. Naruto's character development is killed like... early on. Women are not allowed to be half as complex as their peers. Interesting side characters are either killed off or live in another village so you barely ever see them or their lore is given in crumbs so you're never fully satisfied.

I don't think anything abotu Naruto is that unique (especially if you've read/watched any of Togashi's work like YYH/HXH but also any shounen).

But also... here I am............ 15 years later....... more than 15 years later....... still low to high key obsessed.

A lot of it is Sasuke and Naruto's arc, which is... probably less than 20% of the total series... but like... if a ship is enough to make me deal with everything else, it's gotta be pretty fucking good.

But then... part of me is like "If you didn't get into Naruto as a kid as it was coming out, don't bother, you have to be mentally bonded and shaped by the series tto enjoy it" but idk... I know people who have read it in their 20s, post completion, and got into it.

I'm the wrong person to ask because I hate that I love it. But... I've hated to love lots of things before and I dropped them all. I'm like... the queen of turning on previous passions. And Im still here.

THAT SAID... I never finished *watching* Naruto. It had too much filler (though, if you're insane and this made you want to watch it, google Naruto Kai, it cuts out the filler and flashbacks). I read the manga. I read the first ~500 chapters at least 5 times and the last 200 chapters... once (with an exception of a few chapters I mined for sasunaru content).

TO PUT IT CONCISELY:

Naruto sucks. I can't ever abandon it, it's too good. Do it for Sasunaru. Don't do it for your mental health. The anime is too fucking long, I can give you the tools to make watching it shorter. Don't watch it. Join us. Don't you wanna know wtf I'm blubbering about? Save yourself. Watch Star Trek instead for Spirk if you're just gonna watch shit for god tier soul mate (but still a choice! it's not destiny, it's a CHOICE, we were made for each other but choose everything else until we realize that everything else HURTS) content.

my personal preference on the team minato age thing:

Personally, I like drawing Kakashi being 4 years younger than Obito and Rin, partially because the idea of a 10 year old Obito being absolutely desperate to show up this know it all 6 year old is just like. really, really funny + compelling to me (the embarassment of being much less skilled than a kid whose barely more than half ur age??? LMFAO. BRUTAL TO THE EGO!)

and also it's a neat parallel with Gai, whose genin team was Genma (3-4 years older than Gai) and Ebisu (1-2 years older than Gai). I feel like it emphasizes the kind of brutal war machine that Konoha is at that time—that they'd consider a 5 year old (or in Gai's case, a 7 year old) to be viable soldiers, especially during this war where they're apparently spread incredibly thin and theyve got to cobble the teams together

i think that there's potential for like a really impactful moment where minato tells obito abt sakumo

and suddenly obito realizes that kakashi, at the insane age of 5, had decided he would never let anyone get close, and instead of seeing kakashi as this arrogant rule obsessed prodigy asshole, obito realizes that kakashi is not only a scared kid just like him, maybe even moreso, but like terrifyingly vulnerable.

Kakashi is like 8 and has nobody watching out for him except maybe Minato, meanwhile Obito who comes from the huge and tightly knit uchiha clan is like. constantly caring for and being taken care of by other people—i'm sure that he tried to imagine himself in Kakashi's place when Minato told him abt this.

i think it could be a really interesting moment where obito stops seeing himself in relation to kakashi as like, subordinate (tho kakashi still has rank on him) or like, a struggling teammate being bullied by a hardass child prodigy— and instead. for just a moment. maybe he sees himself as like an older sibling/cousin/member of the clan who has a duty to take care of kakashi, in a way that kakashi cannot take care of himself i especially think that him having that feeling right before he ''dies'' and as a final gesture gives kakashi his eye…that could be really fucking touching. like. the sharingan is like THE identifying feature of the Uchiha right, and after that the Uchiha that we do see Kakashi interact with, Itachi and Sasuke, both see the sharingan, and have a strong reaction to it, wanting to kinda size kakashi up and see if they accept him, bc they understandably see the sharingan as something belonging to their family.

this said, the choice to give it to Kakashi, could be read as Obito giving him a gift of not just of a very special jutsu, but also like, in a way, a belonging? Maybe extended with the intent to like, tell Kakashi that he's like family?

Theres also something abt his imitation of obito afterwards…not only adopting his philosophy but his mannerisms…and the way that this gift from obito is foundational to the person who Kakashi becomes (his special chidori is only rlly functional optimally with the sharingan—his whole nickname "copycat kakashi" is bc of the sharingans ability to remember jutsu)

like. i just think that an older brother type of figure reading of obito could have been really compelling if kishimoto leaned into it

but he didn't! not in any way that mattered anyway. so my reading remains my singular interpretation

Never.... He was nervous when Sasuke invited Naruto for the duel... He was also nervous when confessing Under the Bridge... He was extremely nervous and felt insecure in that Onsen bath scene with Yamato & Sai... He stuttered when admiring Sasuke’s “Cool” looks.

Nothing of this sort with Hinata though.

This is the only panel where Naruto was stunned and blushed around Hinata. Because she motivated him with kind words. I don't know if this can be taken as Crush Behaviour because he reacted like this almost with Sakura when she said she was gonna feed him and he blushed for 6 panels around Gaara too. 

And because of that, he said this....

But in any case, this is very similar to...

Naruto saying he liked Haku and Zabuza as well.... 

These are the only two supposed NH moments that has back and forth conversation between two of them AKA Without Hinata going any Naruto-kun bubbles... Had the Author really cared to go for NH, he could’ve easily developed their bond starting from Chunin Exams and especially after her acknowledgement... But after that, Naruto never even gave a deep thought about that scene... and this scene was never called back at any time...

Whereas

Haku’s words are called back once again and after this he produced 1000 Kage Bunshins. 

So, Naruto saying I like people like Hinata is just a compliment without any “Romantic” feelings... Even Haku’s words had more impact on Naruto to the point of shaping his character. Can’t say the same for Hinata.

Naruto never once displayed any crush like behaviour with Hinata. Not once. However, he displayed those behaviour around Sakura though. **Which is where he was lying to himself**.

what gets me the most is naruto may huff and puff about it to put up a front but at the end of the day naruto just so obviously loves sasuke as a person. like obviously he's in love with him but those moments in which naruto makes it clear he loves sasuke in a way where all he wants to do is build sasuke up mean so much to me - he wants sasuke to live a long life, wants to help him become strong, wants him to find peace, wants him to find happiness, etc. he just loves this guy you know and in my mind at vote2 when sasuke is still skeptical and naruto goes 'cmon don't you get it by now! 🙄' that's just another way naruto is trying to tell sasuke without telling him that he loves him in that way, in a way that he will never take back, so he obviously cares about what happens to him. and sasuke has that realization and he cries. does this make any sense.

i just love that more than anyone in the series, naruto cares about sasuke in a way that makes his happiness and wellbeing a priority. like absolutely naruto has his stupid crazy moments (i'll break all ur bones if that's what it takes) and his own selfish moments of wanting sasuke back for the sake of just having him back in the village bc naruto likes all his important people close to him but i appreciate that naruto even acknowledges that himself. he's the first person who confesses 'i didn't understand everything about sasuke the way i thought i did and that's why we could never laugh together' or whatever and starts to think about what he can do to be a better friend to him - while everyone else in konoha/team 7 is giving up on him lol. idk correct me if im wrong but i think he's the first person to do that and the only person who's resolve never wavers in that. like at least he tries. and even though the ending sucks and sasuke's 'punishment' was bs and it makes no sense for sasuke to leave bc of his rinnegan or w/e at least we see that last shot of sasuke and naruto at peace and naruto letting sasuke go without kicking up a fuss because he knows now that wherever sasuke goes he will be ok - i.e. all naruto ever wanted for him. he doesn't force him to stay, doesn't forcefully follow him again against his wishes... just lets him do what he has to do. to me that's naruto loving sasuke.

again naruto's not perfect in some of the things he says to sasuke. sasuke offering his death at vote2 as a solution was awful but telling of how he believes he has nothing left now that his fate is in the hands of konoha and retcon had naruto offering a lot of promises to sasuke that ultimately turn out to be empty. eventually you figure out it's not surprising that sasuke's anti-military state/anti-authoritarian rule ideologies were never going to survive in a shonen manga where the protagonist's ultimate dream was to become hokage lol. soon kishi started reworking sasuke's revolution to make him look evil and crazy and the plot suffered huge nosedive after nosedive etc etc

but bad ending aside, it still means a lot to me that canonically shippuden is a story of naruto fighting to keep sasuke alive out of love.

so that's why i still think the way naruto loves sasuke is one of the, if not the, most impactful and selfless forms of love sasuke receives throughout the series. it makes sense that it's naruto too since this is the person who sasuke says himself 'knows his heart'. and if the ending had followed the trajectory of early naruto/early shippuden and championed radical reform over the lie that konoha is infallible then we all know how that would've gone and naruto would've stayed in character in choosing sasuke over everything else bc that's what he's always done anyway and sasuke's own dreams wouldn't have been supressed in favor of naruto's and *makes myself sad* I dont know i just *cries* :(

(1) They really skipped straight to the end of the shoguns character arc, huh... While we knew she was beginning to understand from her character quest, now, she's become a wizened expert offscreen. Consequences are a far off dream, and any potential is thoroughly dead. Also the filth in the roots is such an anticlimactic telly way to express Inazuma's past. I think ur right, they def need to invest in some 2d animations.

(2) The sad part is, this would have been a perfect middle part. Imagine the shogun, doubtful, but still confident in her decisions, being guilt tripped for an hour straight by everyone who made the mistake of believing in her, until she realises that she betrayed their expectations, and betrayed her sister, and it is then that she finally realises her mistakes. then you push the shogun robot fight, and this whole introspective attitude to act 3.

(3) I also cant believe MHY is pretending the puppet shogun is a character. Though to be honest I prefer her character to Ei's. Also kudos to Genshin for having us use an immortal c3 electro with an infamous c2 powerspike in a bossfight where electro is mandatory, thereby hiding shitty game design. (Unless it changed after Beta) I also feel like the fact that Ei still thinks erosion sucks is bad. Erosion is change, you're supposed to have accepted it, lol. Muddy concepts

(4) but hey, if she acknowledges her mistakes, maybe there will be consequences soon! Maybe she'll personally go apologise to Kokomi, Thoma, Kazuha, Itto....oh who am I kidding. Of course she won't. This chapter really should've been part of the Archon Quest. Probably not as is, but elements of it would've been more impactful if Raiden's realisations about her people's strength, what they want, etc. were actually linked to... her people actively doing stuff within the story, instead of the memories of people that died 500 years ago.

Okay so i think i wanna start off with how Nart fell for Sakura. They were kids. Kindergartners even. He saw Sakura as the "pretty, smart, popular girl" and like the attention deprived child that he is, he chose he wanted to be with her. It was a CRUSH. An innocent and childish one at that.

Did he love her? Yes. Was he in love with her? Debatable tbh. He was infatuated with her. It's a normal infatuation vs. real love type of shit.

I mean, he was too busy to even focus on himself and with the whole Sauce drama, so i doubt he even had the time to even sort out his own romantic feelings. I'm not even sure if his feelings for Sakura were really that deep rooted as what alot of fans claim it to be.

BECAUSE BECAUSE GETTHIS. If Naruto was really that in love with Sak, why didn't he introduce him to Minato when he was about to depart? If he was really that confident for his feelings for Sakura, then why didn't he share those thoughts to one the most essential things his mother imparted to him?

The only thing similar between Sakura and Kushina are their hot headedness. Even kishi himself admitted that scene with the girlfriend thingy was a herring. Even freaking Tsunade admitted that if Naruto were to be with someone as willful as him, they'd be butting heads all the time.

Do they have a special bond? Yes. Would they work out together as a couple? Yeah, as a bickering married one

And another thing, remember the fake confession scene? Sakura said "I love you" to Naruto. She said those words that Naruto himself has been "dying" to hear, so why didn't he get all ecstatic?

Because he knew she was lying!

Exactly!! He knew she was lying. He knew he'd never have a chance with her. He knew the extent of her feelings for Sasuke and respected it. He didn't act on it, he joked around with dates and what not but there was never any impactful romantic scene between them. Oh and shouldn't romantic scene have i dunno; mutual romance?

Theyre "the most developed ship" but Sakura has established mulitiple times that she was only in love with Sasuke. Narusaku was just as one sided as the other ships in shippuden but some of you aren't ready for that concersation.

Naruto would get rejected every damn minute or at every "moment" they had. How is that mutual??

They just had the upper hand because theyre mcs and they had the most screentime, let's be real

And what I absolutely hate the most about how people perceive Naruto's feelings for Sakura is that they see him as this pathetically in love, obsessed weirdo who only chose Hinata as a rebound or a second choice.

who are some artists u take inspiration from / are some of ur inspirations? love ur art btw :)

Wow I’m so sorry it took me awhile to get back to you anon! This was a hard one. I haven’t thought of my inspirations lately since they have changed a bit. I tried to keep these relevant more to my anime art since that’s what I’m more known for, but some are influences on more of my original art that I hope someday I’ll feel brave enough to share with you all.

From left to right, top to bottom.

CLAMP (Magic Knight Rayearth) - they were the reason I started drawing manga/anime artwork at all back in early 2000′s for me. The only “shoujo” artists on this list, I was really taken by the eyes they drew at the time and it still can be seen a little bit today, though I’ve really tried to steer myself away from the large pointed eyes with thick lashes and elongated bodies that plagued my art for a long time. I’ll always love their compositions, use of color and just how they use marker.

Yusuke Murata (Street Fighter fan art) - known for Eyeshield21 and One Punch-Man. This man can draw anything. His sense of anatomy, foreshortening and movement is breathtaking. I love the lighting and rendering as well. He also has a knack for creating really original faces and he doesn’t have the “same-face” syndrome problem. Just top-notch. I don’t aim to be as shonen in style as him, but I hope to start being able to add more dynamic poses into my work.

Kyohiko Azuma (Yotsubato!) - known for Azumanga Daioh and Yotsubato! I really love the comedy and slice of life genres lately. I love softer styles and I really adore the more simplistic approach he has to his character design that really allows the slice of life genre to shine through his art. Despite the simplicity, it still is very anatomically technical. It’s simple, but warm and effective and very soft. His skill in backgrounds as well is phenomenal. I think it’s a whole atmosphere he creates and the story he tells in his illustrations that I would love to apply to my own work if I can. I also related a lot to an interview where he stated he struggles blending little Yotsuba into the world he created because she’s so different stylistically from all the characters, so it’s a lot of fun and helpful to see how he accomplishes this throughout the manga and the panels.

Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto) - of course one of my biggest influences due to all the SasuSaku I draw. I think his style is very effective. It’s also I think more on the simpler side actually (if you compare it to CLAMP and Murata’s). But it’s so dynamic and full of strong composition and memorable character designs. I really appreciate how by his influence, I never really stopped drawing thanks to the characters, Sasuke and Sakura, that he created that had such an impact on me.

Xia Da (Song of the Long March AKA Choukakou) - This one is a manhua artist. Her inking and watercolor artwork is absolutely phenomenal. Definitely someone I look up to when I’m inking my own pieces, I would love to be at her level of skill someday. Primarily an inspo for inking.

Kamome Shirahama (Atelier of Witch Hat) - another artist with phenomenal inking skills that I really admire. She’s also really good at drawing children! But I definitely believe she can draw anything, the fact that she has crossed the barrier to illustrate comic covers for both DC and Marvel is just incredible to me and a testament to how much skill she possesses. Primarily an inspo for inking.

Kozue Amano (Aria) - Known for Aqua, Aria, and Amanchu (lots of A’s!). Her ability to design precious soft characters, gorgeous scenery, and write a beautiful and gentle slice of life fantasy tale has always made her one of my absolute favorites. I absolutely love how she colors her works.

Adachitoka (Noragami) - this is a team who does characters and background art. It’s not a secret that I love watercolor. I also love the movement and action and fighting scenes from this manga. The fact that this team is female and broke through with a popular shonen series is simply amazing. I hope to be as good as they are in drawing figures and in watercolor someday.

James Gurney (Dinotopia) - the master of creating fantasy worlds and making it look like it EXISTS with his painting skills. His “Color and Light” book is an absolute staple (I have it always ready as reference) and it’s a must if you want to give your lighting that more realistic feel. I think my love of lighting really came from growing up with the Dinotopia series. He is always constantly sharing his wisdom as well on his website and twitter and just an amazing and inspiring person for generations of artists.

Makoto Shinkai (Kimi no Na Wa) - This movie’s aesthetics (especially the lush backgrounds), surrealism, and existentialism really spoke to me. I adore the starry skies and heavens and clouds. Screencaps of his movies fill my phone as a quick reference whenever I’m rendering some complex lighting or trying to create some sort of composition with the sky.

Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki (Kiki’s Delivery Service) - nothing really needs to be said especially given my love for the details in all the movies, the fantastic scenes involving flying in the sky, the gorgeous backgrounds, and the delicious food. Always a good choice to use as a reference for anything with nature or even cluttered cozy houses and rooms and greenhouses. It’s still a desire to delve more into world building for me and I’ll be using these movies for reference. I also keep tons of their artwork in my phone as reference.

Satoru Takizawa (Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild) - Known for his work with Twilight Princess and Breath of the wild. You know where I’m going with this - he is the MASTER of ambient lighting. I love his rough and loose painting style that I wish I could achieve someday, but I still have a tendency to over-render. A great resource for learning how to world-build and for concept art.

Andrew Loomis - anatomy and figure drawing master. At the end of this list, but not the least important by a long shot. His book I think is not the most beginner friendly in terms of seeing basic shapes and breaking down the form (I think his construction is still more on the complex side), but it’s a good place to start and keep grinding until it “makes sense.” It took me years, but once it started clicking, I have him to thank for it because my anatomy was an absolute mess because of my background of starting from CLAMP’s art style. Buy his book and make it your bible. Attend figure drawing classes. If you want to illustrate people no matter how simple, you must make studying anatomy a part of your process.
