52-year-old Faye Wong: still the fashionable heavenly queen who never places herself above common mortals (2021)
By Katherine Ho
Faye Wong, music's heavenly queen of a generation, celebrates her 52nd birthday this year! Although she is over half a century old, there's no trace of time on Faye Wong's face, and she even officially became the global spokesperson of Helena Rubinstein in 2019.  Around that same time, it was announced by the well-known Taiwanese agent Chiu Li-Kwan that Faye Wong would release a new album, which made fans ecstatic. Although we don't know the exact date of Faye Wong's music comeback, we might as well review the past covers of Faye Wong's many classic albums.
Heavenly queen of a generation Faye Wong dominated the entire Chinese music industry with her ethereal and clear voice. Her beautiful voice captivated many fans. Once her singing talent as the "Little Teresa Teng" was discovered, she officially debuted in Hong Kong with her first album "Wong Jing Man", and then "Fragile Woman" and "No Regrets" became popular songs.  In 1996, she was recognized as a pop diva by Time magazine. In 2000, she won the Guinness World Record for "Best Selling Canto-pop Female Artist", demonstrating that the queen's status is irreplaceable.
Faye Wong’s styling is even more impressive. In addition to wearing simple and high-end designs for the mainland variety show "Phantacity", she also wore private custom designs by the queen's stylist Tiki Kwan that implemented Faye Wong’s chic and comfortable image and personality. In the past, there was no style that Faye Wong could not dominate. From Comme des Garcons, Helmut Lang, Dries van Noten, to Ann Demeulemeester, Maison Margiela, and even to the niche brand Jurgi Persoons, their unique and creative designs were natural to her temperament and created an avant-garde and bold fashion style.
In 2020, Faye Wong attended Helena Rubinstein's event in Shanghai and announced that she would become the brand’s spokesperson. She displayed Baotou style, but in fact, this style was not new to her. She has tried this style in past concerts and it was still elegant and fashionable.
In the 2018 Spring Festival Gala, she and Na Ying sang "The Years" on the same stage 20 years later. She wore a lavender dress with vintage gloves. The style cannot help but be reminiscent of the 1994 film "Chungking Express" directed by Wong Kar Wai. Faye Wong with a fresh short haircut and gloves secretly cleaned Tony Leung’s apartment. From cool and skinny sunglass, to the avant-garde see-through plastic dress with crop top and briefs, to Marjan Pejovski's Bjork collection, to Phoebe Philo's minimalist style Céline, she is completely unpredictable and her languid straightforward personality and temperament are fully interpreted.
NEIWAI, endorsed by Faye Wong, is a Chinese underwear brand founded in Shanghai in 2012. The founder Liu Xiaolu focuses on creating a comfortable lifestyle around underwear, adhering to the belief of "being free for both body and mind". Its products range from underwear and has expanded to lounge wear, sportswear and home accessories. The simple style is very prominent.
In order to create a more intellectual and refined sense of luxury, NEIWAI has recently invited Queen Faye Wong to become the global spokesperson, allowing the brand to enter the sights of more people.

Magazine Translation: 嘉人 Marie Claire 2017 Aug Interview
杨洋 Yang Yang 嘉人 Marie Claire 2017 Aug Interview
Tumblr media
Q: In a year, when is the period of time you must leave for yourself? YY: After working for several consecutive months, I will ask for a month of holiday, to travel, gym, and gather with friends, and my working team will not be able to find me. This makes me feel free. However this ‘one month’ is hard to get, I have to negotiate around with my working team.
Q: What do you collect? YY: Shoes, I have at least a hundred pairs of shoes, mainly for the design. I also have 10+ watches, which I rarely have the chance to wear them as I am usually filming. But I will bring two or three pairs to the film set, placing it somewhere within my view when I walk into the hotel room.
Q: What have you bought recently that made you feel happy? YY: I bought a new keyboard and mouse online, and was looking forward to receiving the courier everyday when I went back.
Q: What have you did that challenged your limits? YY: I have fear of deep ocean, but I wanted to see if can break my limits, so I went for diving. When I dived around 15 meters down, I was panicking and was really afraid, I kept pointing to my trainer ‘up! up!’
Q: Tell me a skill that you have but had never shown YY: I can eat. While filming ‘Divas on the Road 2′, I ate eight pastries at the resting lounge during transit; Today morning (on the way to Cannes) at the Dubai transit, I ate three burgers... So one thing I definitely do not want to hear is ‘You seem to have grown fatter’. This is torturous, should I eat or should I not?
Q: What is the weirdest fond of yours? YY: Does having OCD counts? For example if there are a few books on the table, I definitely could not help but to place the books neatly along the edge.
Q: How long can you tolerate without using any social media? YY: One day. From the time at start work in the morning till late night at around 10pm when I end work.
Q: What emoji do you use most frequently when chatting? YY: The emoji ‘Heyha’, that expression looks pretty cool. (Please imagine Yang Yang’s version of ‘Heyha’, seeing the real live version is definitely a benefit!!) (T/N note: the emoji is from Wechat and here is how it looks like~)
Tumblr media
Q: How often do you take selfies? YY: It’s been half a year since I took selfies. I am not someone who loves to take selfie. But my fans always ask me, why are you not posting on Weibo? So well...
Q: If you are requested to post on Weibo to garner as much likes as possible, what would you post? YY: Actually there is a photo of me lying on the film set’s chair sleeping, with a complete makeup for filming, wearing shorts, having my legs up on the chair, with chin up and mouth opened. It was secretly taken by the film set staff. I find that the sleeping pose is really funny, I have thought of posting that photo, but until now I still do not have the confidence to do so (laugh).
Q: What would you be if you did not became an actor? YY: Dancer. Or a pilot. I look upon the feeling to soar, and I am always looking forward to operate the plane.
Q: How have the job of being an actor changed you? YY: It changed every second of everything I am doing. If I was not an actor, I would not have the chance to chat with you here, I would not be going to the Cannes film festival. The effort I gave for this work, and the attention this job gave me, makes up the whole of my current life.
Q: Who is your favourite onscreen actress? YY: It was Gong Li when I was young. Now, it is Natalie Portman.
Q: Bai Qian, Feng Jiu, Su Jin, from the film <Once Upon a Time>, who would you choose? YY: Still Bai Qian, it is fated by destiny.
Q: What do you hope will reappear among the things that are gone? YY: Collagen
Q: What type of gift do you give the most? YY: Electronic technology products.
Q: If your bag is emptied and you can only keep one thing, what is it? YY: Wallet.
Q: What about an emptied room? YY: Mobile phone.
Q: What do you usually do with your friends from outside the entertainment circle? YY: With my junior and high school friends, we will eat, chat around, watch movies, and gaming. Actually the frequency of gaming is higher since we do not need to meet up,we can ‘work together’ online.
Q: Where can we ‘bump’ into you in Shanghai? YY: (Now it is fans’ guessing time) I will always eat at a Hong Kong style steamboat restaurant, a Thai cuisine restaurant, and a 24 hour soy milk shop when I am back in Shanghai. There was once where I got off the plane during midnight and I went straight to queue. The shop does not have any private rooms, people gather around together, it really feels like living a normal regular life.

Would they act with their real-life partners? (2002)
Chang May Choon & Wendy Teo
Would they act with their real-life partners? Screen lovers Faye Wong and Tony Leung gave very different answers to this simple question.
Faye Wong doesn't mind acting in the same movie as beau Nicholas Tse. "I've no objections, but the script must be suitable, and also on the condition that it's not for publicity's sake."
What if they play lovers?
"It depends on the script and the director," was her answer.
The singer/actress was in town on Monday (2/4) to promote her new movie, "Chinese Odyssey 2002". The singer, known for being reticent with the press, didn't fail to live up to her reputation. The 32-year-old looked like she'd rather be lazing in bed. Her attitude made it difficult to imagine her as a wild princess who goes on a forbidden adventure outside the palace walls and then falls for a wanderer played by Tony Leung, in Chinese Odyssey 2002.
Faye hardly moved from her comfortable position on the sofa at the Music Lounge in the Fullerton Hotel, only lifting her head at reporters when they asked questions. And she only spoke once without being prodded... when our photo journalist, Kian Yan, tried to take a picture of her from a low angle. With an indulgent lilt, she remarked: "It's ugly if you take it from that angle."
Ask her other questions, and Faye's lips are sealed.
How is she celebrating Valentine's Day?
"I don't celebrate it at all. This is a Western practice," was her reply.
How about Yuan Xiao (the Chinese equivalent of Valentine's Day)?
"No."
She was a little more forthcoming with her Chinese New Year plans.
"I'll be in Beijing, I spend all my Chinese New Year's there."
She drawled: "I'll probably be making dumplings and such - like I used to when I was young. But I don't know, it seems a bit different from those days." And changing the subject to Faye's darling five-year-old daughter, Tong Tong, didn't loosen the diva's tongue either. Faye was reported earlier to be fuming over a Hong Kong reporter who way laid Tong Tong in front of her school, and asked the little girl about her mum's relationship with Nicholas. The reporter was mistaken for a kidnapper, and Faye reportedly had to take her daughter out of school for a few days. But when the matter was brought up, an irritated Faye retorted: "Why are you people so concerned?"
She had earlier refused to reveal how often she called her daughter while she was shooting on location in Shanghai for two months for Chinese Odyssey 2002. "I call her whenever I feel like it," she had replied with a frown. She also declined to say who was looking after Tong Tong while she was away, dismissing the question with "just take it that someone's looking after her".
And when a reporter suggested that Faye send Tong Tong to school in the US to avoid media attention, like Taiwanese media veteran Chang Hsiaoyen did, Faye emitted a loud "Choi!" and went "Pei, pei, pei!". (These are Chinese expressions used to negate unsavoury remarks.) After a bit of confusion, it turned out that Faye confused Chang with Pai Hsiaoyen - the daughter of Taiwanese host Pai Ping-ping who was raped and killed by her kidnappers.
Recovering from her sputters, Faye didn't seem too happy with the suggestion anyway. "Don't you think it's too soon to send a five-year-old abroad? Isn't it better if she stays by my side?" And when someone asked if Faye was going to beef up security for her daughter, she sighed loudly and picked imaginary lint off her slim black pants. "I'll do what I have to do." Then, to stop further questions about her daughter, Faye finally added: "I know you think she's very cute, but for her sake, can you just rein in a bit of your curiosity?"
Tony Leung's Thoughts On Faye
Eight years ago, they barely spoke a word to each other.
Tony Leung and Faye Wong, who acted together in "Chungking Express" in 1994, behaved as though they were total strangers. And didn't exchange words except when the camera was rolling.
"She seemed very unhappy all the time, and looked as if I owed her money!" teased Tony at the local press conference for their new movie, Chinese Odyssey 2002.
Faye, on the other hand, claimed that she couldn't remember much about their first collaboration. She said: "It was so long ago, I don't remember anymore. I feel like this (Chinese Odyssey) is our first time working together instead."
And eight years down the road, Tony claims that they have become more like pals. Tony said: "Faye seems more mature. She talks more now, and even jokes with me sometimes."
