Homework Default Replacement for TS3

❗❗❗ This is for sims 3! ❗❗❗

My first creation for sims 3! ✨ Since I've been playing ts3 a lot lately and taking heaps of screenshots, the blue homework began to annoy me. You'll still see it in some of my screenshots in the future since my queue is very long but I wanted to share this now! Why wait? 😁 It's not perfect because my gimp skills are trash so it's kind of blurry but I don't mind too much. I may try and improve it in the future.

This is a default replacement for the homework, and will replace it for child-YA. So I tried to pick something non-descript that wouldn't seem too much like one school subject or one age group. It's this image from freepik.

It's the very first thing I've ever made for ts3, so I hope I did it right. It'll still appear blue in sims' inventories and I don't know how to change that but in-game it's fine. Also because children and teens don't appear to actually flip the notebook open I've put the texture on both the front and back of the notebook. My YA test subject did actually flip it open but it wasn't distracting to have it on both imo.

Unfortunately, sims won't be any happier to do homework with their snazzy new notebook, but oh well 😅

It works for me having it in my Packages folder, but the tutorial I followed said to place it in Overrides so you may want to put it there.

A compiled list of my favorite default replacement and override mods from the past year, plus a few classics that I just couldn't leave out. This is Part 1/3 of a collection of cc finds.

So, I figured I'm long overdue for another mod rec list and voila! - here we are.

This time, I'll be linking my favorite default replacement and override mods! While I mostly focused on newer releases, I also tried to add some overrides I don't frequently see mentioned on YT or in rec lists.

Lag Reducing/Game Improving Mods

Nraas MasterController- Adds countless options that allow you to easily control and change just about anything about Sims in your town. Featuring a robust filter system to allow you to find the Sims you want to target and execute actions on. Missy Hissy Custom Careers- Custom Careers. Lot Population Mod- Teleports more sims to community lots, making them more populated.  Nraas StoryProgression- The purpose of the mod is to simulate a life-like balance amongst the inactive members of town, while providing the user the option to disable functionality they do not want. Custom Vehicles- Custom vehicles. Postal Mod- You can send post to any sim in town. Social Clubs Mod- Create custom clubs for your sims to join. Hairdresser Mod- Play as a hairdresser or a client. No Fridge Shopping- Replaces the meal-making interactions on the fridge with custom ones that check whether the Sim has the required ingredients to make the meal or snack. Business As Unusual Bistro- Modifies EA's store content bistro oven splitting the chef and waiter roles in two and allows you to set shifts for them. The Sims 3 Open For Business- Create a store, hire employees, set objects for sale (without rugs!), restock objects, earn XP on sales to increase your rank and more! Flower Arranging- Adds flower arranging skill to the game. Knitting for TS3- Adds knitting skill to the game. Attend University Online- This mod allows sims to work towards completing a university degree on the computer. Yoga Mod- Brings the yoga activity from The Sims 4: Spa Day to The Sims 3. We often see questions on Reddit from Simmers, asking for mods that enhance their gameplay. We decided to compile a list of mods players found useful (the list will be growing!). 10 Mods SIMS4 that I use and that I really like.

They are not listed in order of preference but it's 10 mods that I use all the time.

I wanted to share with you the 10 Mods I use the most in my Sims4 game. Maybe you already know them but I hope you will discover some of them too :)

1 - Faster homework (Scarlet)

This mod allows university students to do their homework faster.

My personal opinion: It's a very interesting mod if we send our sims to college because it saves a lot of time.  University required.

Homework time by default => 150 minutes

Homework time via mods => 10/25 or 50 minutes

Lately this mod has been modified, to have tried both versions, I prefer the old version but then it's a matter of taste :)

2 -  OMSP Shelf (Amoebae)

This little red shelf everyone should know about it, it allows you to place almost all objects exactly at the height you want.

My personal opinion : A small shelf that I cannot do without in my constructions or renovations.

3 - Automatic Thermostat (LittleMsSam)

An automatic thermostat that regulates the temperature on its own once the sims has purchased the option (Around 690 simoleons)

My personal opinion: I admit having hesitated to put this mod in my game because I did not see the usefulness of it but once installed, I would not remove it anymore.

This thermostat changes the temperature according to the seasons. It is hot in winter and cold in summer without the sims intervening.

4 - T.O.O.L (TwistedMexi)

Also some very well known mods that let you do "almost" anything with in-game items, this mod has too many good sides.

For example, you can put a chair on one side as if it were overturned or a car on the roof as if it had overturned following an accident. And many more.

My personal opinion: A must have mod for me since I got it in my game.

It allows you to do almost anything you want with objects.

5 - More Columns in CAS (Weerbesu)

Display 5 columns in the CAS for a better overview of everything that creates a sims.

My personal opinion: Not super useful you will tell me, but this mod is so practical.

6 - Go to the nursery (Grumpy / MaiaGame)

A mod that allows toddlers to be sent to a nanny or to the nursery.

My personal opinion: A mod that has changed the life of my sims who have a toddler !!

We can send his toddler to the nanny or to the nursery for a certain amount of money, the toddler leaves and comes back alone after several hours and he has his needs gauges in the green and in the private guards they also increase their skills , which allows the other sims of the household to do something else (for example I use it for one of my sims who works independently, suddenly when his toddler is at home, my sims are always requested by the little one because he is hungry, or wants to go on the potty ... With this mods my sims can have a few hours of peace while knowing his child is safe at the nursery or at the nanny's.

7 - Photographic Memory (RVSN) - Patreon 💰

A mod that transforms the photos taken by your sims into frameless photos to hang on the wall or on the postcard board.

My personal opinion: Recently discovered and already a fan of this mod. I was fed up with having selfies of my sims in frames, with this mod, we can transform this photo (and many others) into a simple photo that we can tape or hang with a thumbtack on the wall or on the postcard board. I find it really nice, it gives another meaning to the photo.

8 - Hire certain Sims (incl. Family Members) at Restaurants (LittleMsSam)

This mods allows you to hire members of your household or friends if the sim has a restaurant.

My personal opinion: I admit, I had trouble understanding how it works because there are several characteristics to put in place to hire his wife or husband as a host or server in his own restaurant but it is is really a very nice mod.

9 - Spend Weekend With... (LittleMsSam)

This mod makes it possible to send children or toddlers to another home for several days, such as for example with grandparents for holidays or with dad or mom if the couple is separated.

My personal opinion: A mod that I also like a lot and very useful when you have separated couples or families in the game, it allows a very pleasant shared custody.

10 - Tiny Elevators For Pets (and toodler)  (LittleMsSam)

Mini lift that allows puppies, kittens and even toddlers to descend the floors without going through the stairs.

My personal opinion: A mod that has changed the lives of my toddlers who lived upstairs, they no longer spend the day going down or up the stairs ... They borrow this mini elevator which makes their life easier.

The Ideal Sims Game

Had some thoughts and have to put them somewhere.

I’ve thought about what I like about different sims games and reached the conclusion that it would be... Mostly a mix between The Sims 2 and The Sims 3.

Hear me out.

“The Sims 6″ or whatever we should call this hypothetical game, would be generally similar to The Sims 2, with some notable differences

CAS

CAS customization options closer to the The Sims 3 level. Color sliders!

Traits, aspirations, lifetime wants, and personality points. Obviously some traits would be removed since personality points cover some of those (mean, outgoing etc), and plenty of traits should be featured later in expansion packs/DLCs so EA can milk their dear cash cow, but as said, DLCs should not be for gameplay essentials, it should be for gameplay enhancement.

Turn ons and turn offs. Should include things such as personality traits, approximate hair color, work type, work level, clothing, glasses, yadda yadda. The hair color would check based on what’s in close proximity by using hexadecimals, that way sims can also be attracted to custom hair colors such as purple hair.

Age options, because sims shouldn’t have to start at the beginning of the adult stage every time.

Height sliders!

Disabilities. Yes, this would include a Simlish sign language. Disabilities should also be able to overlap, and occur because of events and chance cards.

Worldbuilding

The ability to create your own town like in The Sims 2, but the ability to edit the map itself such as adding/removing roads and more.

No townies or NPCs should spawn unless you approve of it. This means you’d be able to create your own NPCs for the town. Your sims shouldn’t be able to go to the hospital if no one is employed in the Medical career, or call a fireman unless no one is in that career, etc. (unless you have chosen yourself in settings that should be created by the game automatically).

Open world and story progression like in The Sims 3 if the player enables it in settings, university shouldn’t be separate. The university system shouldn’t be as complex as in previous The Sims games, just a school essentially but requires more homework and similar. This experience can be elaborated on in expansion packs and DLCs.

More control over economics and politics in the world. Should taxes exist? You decide. Monarchy? Democracy? Dictatorship? All of this should be something the player can fix. Alternatively include this part in a DLC since it’s very specific.

Gameplay

Wants and fears, affected by traits, aspirations, and personality points. A family sim with commitment issues will still fear marriage. A “Gold Digger” lifetime want family sim will want their relatives to marry rich sims.

Aging settings- let players decide for themselves how many days a sim should be a baby, toddler, child, teen, young adult, adult, and elder. The default days should match number of years IRL, because no one is a teenager until they’re 30.

Jealousy changes. Being in love and being in a relationship needs to be a separate thing, because Don Lothario getting slapped for “cheating” on Nina Caliente with his fiancé makes very little sense. Open relationships should be a possibility, perhaps require certain traits for this to happen?

Sims who hate each other shouldn’t necessarily get into violent fights constantly. Traits and personality points etc. should change how the sims act around the people they dislike.

I love chance cards, keep those in please. If anything, add more of them. Also, if chance card choices go against the sim’s personality, possibly have a small % risk that they will lose that trait or gain/lose certain personality points (with the % increasing per time the sim acts out of character)? And of course, chance cards that give you the ability to gain traits. You could also have extra options arise depending on skills, personality points, traits etc. (For example, a charismatic sim should be able to talk themselves out of a situation, or have a greater % chance of success doing so.)

Pre-made sims

The “alternate universe” idea was cool but poorly executed. Feel free to try again, and do so with the old Sims 2 premades. That way, you can take the storylines everyone thought were so cool and give it a new spin, without ruining current canon.

By following these we essentially have a mix between The Sims 2 and The Sims 3 base games with a few enhancements.

What can be added in expansion packs and DLCs?

How can you milk the cash cow without taking away essentials from gameplay that make players feel forced to buy everything or they can’t play? Well, ideally everything should just be included in the first game, but we know EA doesn’t operate that way.

The key to “expansion packs” is that functions in it should add more to gameplay but not be a requirement to enjoy the game. To quote someone on the Steam review page who bought African portraits for Crusader Kings II: “I have to pay money to be black.” That’s not how it should work.

Things you can leave out from the OG game and include in Expansion packs or DLCs:

CAS

Various clothes and hairstyles. With the color changing tool there’s a lot of room to change things already. Cut down on the number of hairstyles and outfits so more energy can be focused on improving the gameplay aspects. Cosmetics are always best reserved for DLCs.

Tattoos.

Secondary aspirations. They’re good to have in the game to give your sim more depth, but they are not a neccesity and are thus good to save as optional content.

More aspirations and lifetime wants. Goes together with more careers of course, and pet-related lifetime wants for pets expansion pack etc.

Stuff packs that focus on certain time periods, cultures, and more.

Worldbuilding

Alternate start years. A medieval expansion pack, for example, that allows you to create a medieval world specifically, where technological advances aren’t available etc. You could use “into the future” ideas for this too. You would be able to choose whether technological progression should be flat or improve over time. (Imagine the Legacy Challenge done in this!)

On that note, a “Castaway” type of thing would be cool.

Gameplay

Aspiration rewards. Not essential for a base game.

More careers! Can easily be included in a work expansion pack. With this expansion you could include career rewards, more chance cards for all careers (including chance cards that make you gain/lose traits, personality points). Businesses go here too IMO but knowing greedy EA they’d put it in separate expansion packs.

Expansion packs with chance cards and special events for different life stages. A mid-life crisis? Teenagers going through hormone hell? All that doesn’t need to be in the original game but can be included in expansion packs.

While we’re talking about that, a pregnancy DLC sounds like a mess, but this is an opportunity to add triplets and quadruplets, pregnancy tests (although obviously sim-ified), the ability to lie about the father of the child, paternity tests, and more.

Pets! Not much to add here other than that it’s a perfect opportunity to add a unicorn and, idk, the ability for horses to get jobs if your sim has particular traits that lead to nonsense behavior á la Caligula.

Weather and season holidays.

Vacations, because every sims game needs it.

The Sims 3 Supernatural was incredible with the complexity to each supernatural creature. Something similar again, however, it should also acknowledge hybrids (we know this is possible to some degree, because aliens in The Sims 3 had a hidden “alien DNA percentage” value), and no random assignment of supernaturals. They should be rare unless the player changes it to not be so in settings.

III. Meshing a (vintage) dress

(Previous: II. Learning to mesh)

Now that you know how to get around in Blender, you can finally put your newly acquired skills into action and mesh your first dress. I just hope you did your homework and really made your donuts - otherwise you might find it very difficult to understand what's going on in this part! I'll assume that you've watched and practised it all, so I won't explain the basic yet again. I will be writing the shortkeys in brackets though – there are way too many of them to remember them all after just a couple of videos.

So, let's get it started... But where?

As usually, there's no one proper answer to this question. Generally speaking, creators' approaches to meshing can be divided into 3 categories:

Combining parts of different EA meshes into a new mesh – a.k.a. frankenmeshing.

For sure you've seen frankenmeshed CC many times, even though you might not have realised it. Let's say EA releases a new DLC which includes a top with some cool, never-seen-before sleeves. Let's say there's a dress in game which you think would look great with those new sleeves instead of the boring old ones. In such case you can simply export both meshes in S4S, open one of them in Blender and append the other one (more on it later). A bit of deleting & merging of vertices and voilà! The mesh is ready. Most of the time you don't even have to worry about uv-1 and weights (again, more on it later... LOTS on it later).

Mesh editing

That's pretty self-explanatory, isn't it? This method is what most tutorials try to teach you. Look for a piece which resembles the most what you'd like to make. Export the mesh and make the necessary adjustments. Depending on how much you edited, you might have to mess with uv-1 and weights a little bit, but usually it shouldn't be too problematic.

Making a mesh from scratch

As far as I know without having ever used Marvellous Designer, this is what MD creators do: 'sew' their mesh completely from scratch and then import it to Blender. Such a mesh doesn't carry any of the vital information – uv-maps, weights, bones, anything - so all of those have to be manually assigned to it. This, obviously, significantly increases the workload and can be very tricky to do; however, this meshing method gives you almost unlimited freedom. If you don't limit yourself to editing existing stuff, you can make pretty much ANYTHING.

As you can see, all of those methods have their pros and cons - and they're all equally valuable as long as they help you achieve your goal. The method which I like the most and which I'm going to show you lands somewhere between no. 2 and 3: I use an existing top and make it into a dress. This way I have lots of creative freedom, but also reduce the unnecessary workload (yes, in most cases meshing a top from scratch would be totally unnecessary).

Enough theory, let's go grab that top!

Open S4S. Choose the “Create 3D mesh” option under “CAS” menu and then click that “CAS” button. You will see the list of all CAS items in your game.

NOTE: If you DON'T see the list, that probably means S4S didn't manage to find your TS4 files. You have to open the 'Settings' tab and manually change the 'Sims 4 Path' and 'Sims 4 Documents'. And if you're already there, make sure your Blender path is correct as well!

As you can see, there are many categories you can choose from at the top to narrow down your search. I need a top for adult females, so that's what I'm going to select. My favourite starting point is that simple BG top – it's skin-tight (meaning: the texture is only printed on top of the body, not really meshed, which makes it perfect for any future edits) almost everywhere, except for the breast area: there it's nicely stretched, just like it should be in case of my dress. If I wanted to make a dress with a deep décolletage, like an evening or ball gown, I'd type 'nude' in the search bar and select that naked female Barbie top instead.

The swatch doesn't matter. Select any of them and then click 'next'. I chose the red one, just because I like the colour:

What you're doing now is cloning a BG item and creating a new package. Name it whatever you want and save it in some 'Tutorial' folder or so. It doesn't really matter, as soon you won't need it anymore – we're here only for the mesh.

Once you've done it, a new window will appear. This is your new package with all the information it carries. We'll delve into details later – for now, as I said, we only need the mesh. Go to the 'Meshes' tab and click the 'Export mesh' button (make sure NOT to change the level of detail by accident!). Save it in your Tutorial folder as whatever (e.g. mesh_1).

You can close S4S now – we won't need it for a loooong time. Open your newly exported Blender file instead. This is what you should see:

NOTE: It won't make any sense to you right now, but check if you see the 'S4Studio CAS Tools' on the right side! If they're not there, it means your Blender and S4S are not properly connected and you'll run into problems later. Go back to S4S settings and assign the correct Blender path!

I'd suggest you immediately change the perspective to Ortho (num 5) and hide those sidebars on the right (n) and left (t) of the main window. Better, right?

Make sure your cursor is in the main window! If the shortkeys aren't working, it's probably because the cursor is in the wrong place.

When you go into edit mode (tab), you might notice one very important detail: body parts are also parts of the mesh. If you delete them, they won't appear on your sim either. Our top includes hands and neck only – the rest of what you can see is visible only in Blender. A good way to check if your mesh isn't missing anything is clicking that little plus next to 'rig' and then 'closing' all those little eyes next to all the listed body parts. Now your model will look a bit different:

Of course, missing some of those body parts is not a problem. A dress shouldn't include head or feet – those are separate categories. We can toggle feet, both heads and teeth visible again. What we lack is a bottom, i.e. legs – but luckily, we don't have to worry about it, as they'll be hidden under the skirt anyway. I will explain how to add legs (or any other missing body parts) to the mesh at one point, but a bit later – for now let's say we don't need them.

There are two methods of meshing a skirt that I'd like to show you, and they both start with the same basic steps:

1. Just after exporting, your mesh is cut wherever its uv map was cut, which might lead to some problems. Better select all your vertices (a), press w and choose 'remove doubles' from the list. Almost 300 vertices got merged!

2. Turn on the X-ray. Make sure you're in the front view (num 1) and then select (b) all the vertices below the waistline. Press X or del and choose 'vertices'. Kaboom!

3. Select (b) the lowest remaining row of vertices.

4. Extrude those vertices down (e, z) until the point to which your dress should reach. If you're using a reference picture, that's one of those moments when you should take a close look at it.

5. Scale (s) those extruded vertices until the bottom of your dress is as wide as it should be. If you're using a picture, pay attention to the proportion of the bottom of the dress vs shoulders – that's usually the best reference point you can get. Mine should be quite a bit wider than the shoulders, so I got this:

6. Turn the camera around and check how it looks from other viewpoints. I can see that my skirt is kind of asymmetrical, and not in a good way: flat at the back, going too far to the front. Let's go to the side view (num 3) and move those vertices back a bit (g, y). Much better!

7. I still don't like that flatness at the back. Let's go to the top view (num 7) and select only the central vertex on the back. Now, do you remember what you did to get that icing on the donut? Proportional editing? That's what I'm going to use. I'll turn it on only for connected vertices (alt + o) and then move that central vertex back (g, y).

NOTE: If your whole mesh is moving when you're trying to use proportional editing, scroll your mouse wheel until you see a white circle on the screen. The smaller the circle, the smaller the area affected by your edits. By default it's very big, that's why everything is moving!

8. Once again look around and make sure the basic shape of your skirt mesh is correct. Save, e.g. as mesh_2 (ctrl + shift + s).

Did you make it till the end? Congratulations! I'm sorry it got so long and I hope you could follow everything (also, please tell me if something isn't clear, I'll try to add explanations). Of course we're not done with our meshing adventures; the skirt still needs lots of tuning, but we'll deal with it next time. Now we all deserve a good rest :).

The biggest it’s been in a while with a whole 3.22GB of mods and cc. I really need to organize my toxic folder and delete some because I prefer to keep it under 2GB!

What default eyes and skin do you use?

That would be the Beetle Eyes by Squeamishsims and the Halo skin from Magicbats which you can find here and here!

Who is your favorite gameplay blog?

I love Sulanii and Anotherplumbob so much and if I could find my Tumblr crushes (can’t seem to locate that feature anymore) they would definitely be the top two!

Who is your favorite storytelling blog?

Uhmm I’m not sure I follow any strickly storytelling blogs unless Anotherplumbob counts? (I think they do because their Lacey Legacy is a great ride and a fun read!) The closest thing to a storytelling think I follow isn’t sims (Lore Olympus). I prefer sims gameplay rather than realistic story telling in the sims. 

What do you do when you are unmotivated?

When I have no motivation for the Sims 4, I step away from the game and play other things. Recently I played the Sims 3 for a solid month and a half. It was nice and I had so much fun. Then when I returned to the Sims 4 I take the family I play with and give them a makeover and build them a new house. The surroundings feel renewed and so does my gameplay! Soon you’ll see I built a new house for the Melons when I came back from my break and I love playing in it!

Do you talk about sims with people in real life?

I annoy the crap out of my best friend of almost 15+ years by telling her about my gameplay and new packs and sims drama. She listens to me rant and I appreciate her so much!

If you play gameplay, do you play with mods?

Yes! I play with Master Command Center, UI Cheats, Playable Pets, Better Build/Buy, and some University mods that shorten the credits needed for a degree(I needed this mod after Honeydew’s uni experience) and makes uni homework take an hour rather than 3 hours because as a uni student I know it takes an hour and that's all anyone usually put into it.

7. Of the sim skills available, what would you say you’re most proficient in?

Cooking. Looking at the dishes available at each level, I’m maybe a solid 5 (why are omlets a level 7 dish though? They’re pretty basic). Maybe Parenting (level 4/5) as a close second. Since I’m a good 10+ years older than my sisters, I’m used to looking after them whilst my mother’s at work/otherwise busy - so I’m reasonably skilled at defusing conflicts between them, helping them with their homework, and occasionally trying to give them life advice (whether it’s effective life advice is another question altogether).

10. Favorite occult type? Why? 

Vampires! I like the diversity of powers and weaknesses that you can choose between, being able to change their appearance in dark form (a function I sometimes use to create other supernatural creatures like demons), and being able to both infect other sims with vampirism and have hereditary vampire families. 

Werewolves would be my default choice, but Sims hasn’t had a good werewolf occult state since Sims 2. I didn’t like the Sims 3 werewolves very much (maybe because there were no good fur options so they didn’t look very “werewolfy” to me?) and we sadly still don’t have werewolves in Sims 4 :’(

Best part of simblr: Connecting with other simmers, and seeing the cool & creative new ways other simmers play The Sims and push the borders of our sandbox. Worst part of simblr: EA’s brainwashing influence making simmers complacent with mediocrity, constantly voting with their wallets for watered-down regurgitated content rather than putting EA’s lazy uninspired arse to the flames so they can finally make content worth the money we pay for these games year after year.

What other games you play: Most recently: Dragon Age: Inquisition (if EA shuts down Bioware before they make DA4 Imma be so freaking angry! I need CLOSURE!); Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice; Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice; my zillionth replay of God of War 4.

Betty Inkwell for @sandy-sims The Lion, The Snake, and The Snitch.

Hufflepuff, Year 5, Half Blood.

Quidditch Position: Rather spend the time reading a book or finishing homework. Extracurricular: Her and her friends have an unofficial book club that meets once every other week in the library. Pet/Familiar: She has a sweet tabby cat named Juniper. Boggart: Her friends and family rejecting her and hating her. (It usually shows up as her father yelling at her, saying he wishes she was not his daughter.) Amortentia: The smell of her parent’s bookstore.  Old books, her mother’s perfume, and cat hair.

Betty’s father has owned a wizarding bookstore for almost 25 years.  During this time, while on the search for a rare book, he met and fell in love with a muggle woman.  They were married, and now they run the bookstore together.  Betty was born in 1968, 4 years after her parent’s wedding.  Both of her parents hoped that she would be born a witch.  When she got her Hogwarts letter, they were ecstatic.  Now, Betty is entering her 5th year at the school, and her father hopes that she will continue to run the bookstore after his death.
