Was the "Monster" manga changed during serialization?
Tumblr media
So for "research" for the iceberg (and cause a friend watched it and wanted to talk about it so I said yeah why not, its supposedly a classic lol) I read the "Monster" manga.
I'll talk about what I found in the videos, but one thing that doesnt have anything to do with SE or the iceber what I wanted to put out somewhere cause couldnt find on google anybody saying it, is:
I think the story of it was written in chunks, that would often "retcon" or atleast significantly add to the direction that was intended.
Now I'll start with saying I dont mean this as some takedown or critique, just as an interesting theory about the production of the story.
I guess only with mysteries or detective storys, especially ones that are so interlinked, one kinda wishes that everything is neat and tidy - even if I doubt that is actually allways true.
So first some circumstantial evidence - it is a serialised story, meaning it is written and published as it goes along, with the threats of cancelation and possibility of being pressured to be extended.
This alone is not what I stake everything on, cause it is possible that somebody had it all figured out in advance and was steadfast that the vision will be written as it is, rejecting any pleas for bloat or fears of getting canceled before it is done.
One could say that it all is just part of the complex narrative web - but idk, to me its seems more needlesly complicated than complex, and thats what I mean with the feeling of the story being written in chunks, that would supperseed and rewrite some things that happened before:
But then we look at the story itself - at first everything seemed to lead to the evil orphanage, then it was supposedly some seminar in a reading group, then it was being held in a dark room Crona style (not getting into the twin swap thing, cause I think that was forshadowed, even if I had a resolution in mind that thankfully didnt come true cause it would have been to weird and stupid lol)
Think it is most obvious with little side storys and one of chapters that seem more like filler until the larger chunk gets figured out - while often very interesting and engading, they often did seem to get kinda forgoten, like the vietnamese unlicensed teenage doctor beauty (which idk felt kinda lowbro for the standards of the work, like atleast make her ugly, which would be understandable if she works non stop without caring for her health and doesnt feel so "mary sueish" for a lack of a better term lol)
Even some unanswered questions, like why Roberto tried to kill Nina at that sidestory in Italy, if he was totally loyal to Jonah - ofcourse one can suppose that with his obssession with him, he would want to eliminate someone standing in the way of single minded affection but still, weird to it not acknowledged in story.
Or on the other hand, lets look at the climax with the little town - I mean it is horrific to see that much death, but in the end it just a small town - like a nuke on Nagasaki killed prolly tons more, not counting radiation - what Im trying to say with the whole "he wants to be the last one stading when the world ends" it seems kinda small scale, like the dude was some wunderkind blackmarket banker at 15, with that one would suspect that he would try to start a nuclear war to tie back the whole theme of the cold war paranoia dehumanization and mysanthropie - the large scale massacacre of all against all in large scale.
But maybe Im starting to sound like those nitpick channels who go scene by scene of the newest superhero shlock and think they are smart for pointing out how space magic is not realistic.
So I'll end by saying that I quite enjoyed the story and think the fact the the author kept it together while adding new stuff on top at such a large scale is commendable on its own.
Lets see how 20th century boys will play out...

music recommendations because i have some thoughts™
i don't wanna be that person who's like "my music taste is so weird lol" but i find that very often most of my friends don't really care for the music i like so i thought i'd just make a long ass post about it on tumblr instead. Fair warning, I'm very passionate about MIKA and The Mechanisms and so this very quickly got VERY long because it is part of my ongoing campaign to convince people to listen to mika and the mechs.
1) MIKA in general, but especially My Name Is Michael Holbrook (2019) and No Place In Heaven (2015) (especially the Deluxe version!!)
MIKA is a kind of British singer (half Lebanese, grew up in France blabla), and you probably know him for Grace Kelly and Relax, Take It Easy from his first album Life In Cartoon Motion from 2007. He writes a lot of FUN music, interspersed with the occasional slightly sadder song, especially when looking at an album like No Place In Heaven, which contains a lot of songs with gay themes, resulting in some songs that are just a little bit ouch. He's originally classically trained and has a frankly RIDICULOUS range and idk he just writes very good pop music. Also I have so much respect for that time he talked about how a lot of pop is very fake, with like expensive cars and stilettos and mini skirts in the snow and said "Because I walk down the street, and I don't see any of that. I see fat women and gay men. I don't know... That's real". He's written 5 albums; My Name Is Michael Holbrook (2019), No Place In Heaven (2015), The Origin Of Love (2012), The Boy Who Knew Too Much (2009), and Life In Cartoon Motion (2007).
For starters, I recommend listening to Last Party, Origin Of Love, Grace Kelly, Blame It On The Girls, Blue, Happy Ending, Pick Up Off The Floor, Last Party, Underwater, Tomorrow and Tiny Love (yes this is a long list but i REALLY love MIKA). If you want a slightly broader palette that's not just my favourites, I recommend the Mika starter pack on spotify.
2) The Mechanisms. I warn you. I am making this a thing. I have been obsessed with the mechs since last march.
Boy, where to start? The Mechanisms were a British 9 member space pirate story-telling cabaret that "died" in January 2020. They rewrite songs to fit retellings of various stories. I don't even know what genre I'd describe them as, but probably folk but steam-punk?? Their 4 "main" albums are concept albums, and I honestly just recommend listening to the from beginning to end in chronological order. A good way to get into the mechs is also to listen to UDAD and then watching the live show on youtube or alternately try giving Death To The Mechanisms a listen, to get good quality live show audio of TBI and various other stuff. Also, it was streamed on YouTube and someone combined the footage with the album audio and it rocks. Really, I think the mechs' best selling points are honestly just their concept albums:
Once Upon a Time (In Space) Their first album from 2012. I'd say this is the most "easily digestible" for the general public, since it's a retelling of various fairytales. So, what if Old King Cole was in fact not merry, but rather a cold-blooded dictator, intent on colonising as much of the galaxy as possible. What if Snow White was a general, looking to avenge what King Cole did to her sister, Rose. What if Cinderella was to be wedded to Rose the day that King Cole attacked in order to kidnap Rose? But y'know, In Space and also like every other mechs album it's a beautiful tragedy. Fave songs are Old King Cole, Pump Shanty, and No Happy Ending.
Ulysses Dies at Dawn You guessed it, it's a story about Odysseus, or Ulysses because I guess Ulysses is easier to rhyme or fit in the meter or something, idk. Ulysses is a war hero of unknown gender who is said to keep something that could take down the corrupt Olympians, meanest families in the City, in a vault to which only they know the passcode. Oedipus, Heracles, Orpheus, and Ariadne have been hired by Hades, who happens to be The Mechs' quartermaster Ashes O'Reilly, to get into Ulysses' vault. I didn't care much for udad at first, but honestly it's got some real bangers and the story is really good. UDAD weirdly stands out as the only of the concept albums to not feature any gay relationships, per se. Fave songs are Riddle of the Sphinx, Favoured Son, and Underworld Blues.
High Noon over Camelot This is my favourite mehcs album. So basically, this is Arthurian legend, but it's a space western and Jonny D'Ville does a bad southern accent. This is the story of the cowboy lovers Arther, Lancelot, and Guinevere searching for the Galfridian Restricted Acces Interface Login, or GRAIL, in order to stop their world from falling into the sun. Meanwhile, Mordred and Gawaine are ruling Camelot, and Mordred has convinced Gawaine to try to establish peace with the Saxons by whom Mordred was raised, but Gawaine hates viciously. If you love getting your heart broken and songs by a fucking off the rails batshit preacher I HIGHLY recommend hnoc. Fave songs are Gunfight at the Dolorous Guard, Blood and Whiskey, and Once and Future King. Honorary mention for Hellfire because it awakens something animalistic in me.
The Bifrost Incident TBI is the frankly only good adaptation of norse mythology I've ever known of, and I say that as Dane who was literally forced to learn things about norse mythology in school because it's my heritage or whatever. I've been listening to TBI a lot lately because it's VERY good. It's definitely the most refined of the mechs' albums (because it's the newest) but also I just love a little bit of cosmic horror. 80 years ago, Odin, the All-Mother, ruler of Asgaard, launched a train through the wormhole Bifrost that would reduce the travel between Asgaard and Midgaard from 3 months to 3 days, but things didn't go quite as planned. Lyfrassir Edda of the New Midgaard Transport Police is trying to solve the case of why suddenly the train has arrived 80 years late; to figure out whether it was accident or maybe it was sabotaged by Loki, who was allegedly sentence to death her murder of Baldur, by the Midgaardian resistance led by Loki's wife Sigyn, or maybe by Thor, who was to take over after Odin, and who holds quite the grudge because he used to be a friend of Loki's. You might've heard the song Thor from this album, it's apparently quite popular. Fave songs are Loki, Ragnarok III: Strange Meeting, and Ragnarok V: End of The Line. Yet again an honorary mention: Red Signal because while Lovecraft was a bitch, his invocations are fucking RAW.
Basically, the Mechanisms do all of their performances in character as captain first mate Jonny D'Ville, quartermaster Ashes O'Reilly, pilot DrumBot Brian, master-at-arms Gunpowder Tim, science officer Raphaella la Cognizi, doctor Baron Marius Von Raum (neither a baron, nor a doctor), archivist Ivy Alexandria, engineer Nastya Rasputina, and The Toy Soldier, who is, as usual, present. You can find very obscure lore about the crew of the Aurora here, tidbits on Tales To Be Told and TTBT Vol. 2, such as One Eyed Jacks, The Ignominious Demise of Dr. Pilchard, Gunpowder Tim vs. The Moon Kaiser, Lucky Sevens, and Lost in the Cosmos.
If you feel like listening to a full 40-50 minute album to find out if you like a band is a bit much, I recommend listening to one of the mini stories Alice, Swan Song, or Frankenstein, which are about 12, 5 and 9:30 minutes respectively.
3) The Amazing Devil You know that guy who played Jaskier in the Witcher? I got into The Amazing Devil from spotify recommending them because I listened to the mechs, and apparently Joey Batey from The Amazing Devil is the same Joey Batey who was in the Witcher. Both him and Madeleine Hyland are VERY talented singers and songwriters and their second album The Horror and the Wild makes me go out into the forest and SCREAM. I listened to it on repeat for like a month straight. I guess they'd also be considered folk, but like. New Folk. Also yes, this is another British artist, I don't know why I'm like this. I've never really gotten that into their first album, Love Run, but King slaps. As I understand there's this whole lore about the Blue Furious Boy and Scarlet Scarlet, Joey and Madeleine respectively, but unlike the Mechanisms it's actually possible to find out things about the actual real people and harder to find the obscure lore? I'm open for people to please help me. Fave songs are The Horror and the Wild, Farewell Wanderlust, and That Unwanted Animal, which is literally a third of their second album, but again. I haven't really listened to Love Run that much, and I just LOVE the harmonies on THATW. (also im gay and dramatic leave me alone)
4) dodie I have so much love for this woman. Like many others, I first knew dodie as doddleoddle on youtube. I think I first stumbled across her in probably 2015, because I distinctly already knew her before she released her first EP Sick of Losing Soulmates in 2016. I think I watched probably every video she's ever made in the span of a few weeks. I just loved her quiet sound and was absolutely HOOKED. Also she's actually the reason I got into MIKA originally, so thanks for that. Dodie just realeased her first album Build A Problem (in addition to her three EP's; the one mentioned above, You, and Human) and it slaps. Yes dodie is also British Fave songs are probably Monster, Rainbow, and In The Middle.
5) Cladia Boleyn Unfortunately, Claudia Boleyn only has three singles and that's it. She's been making content on youtube for quite a while, and that's how I first discovered her. I don't know what genre her music is, but I like it. The songs are Celesta, George, and Mother Maiden Crone, of which the latter is my favourite. I'm not saying Claudia Boleyn invented women in 2017 when she released Mother Maiden Crone, but she did. Also you guessed it, Claudia Boleyn is British.
6) Hozier I'm not about to tell you about Hozier. You know who he is. Listen to Nina Cried Power, Angel Of Small Death & The Codeine Scene, and Shrike. Also Hozier isn't stricly British in that he is definitely from A British Isle, but Ireland is not part of the UK. Give me a break.
7) Oh Land Oh Land IS DANISH. I like her early music best, because I'm not that into the electronic sound. I guess Oh Land is just you regular old pop, but with the occasional weird vibe? Oddly enough, I like her first album Fauna best. Unfortunately I haven't really listened to her newest album Family Tree much, but it seems good? Fave songs are Frostbite, Love You Better and Family Tree. I cried on the bus, first time I listened to the Danish version of Love You Better, Elsker Dig Mer because my mother tongue always just hits harder. Also Frostbite is Oh Land doing a duet with herself which is pretty cool.
8) Oysterband This is a live recommendation. I mean they're a decent folk band and all, but they're a fucking experience live. If you like folk and you ever get the opportunity to see Oysterband live, do it. Unfortunately, yes. They are British. Either way, they are incredible on a scene and I think they deserve a mention for that.
9) Ben Platt Honestly don't know much about this guy, but he's not British and he was in Dear Evan Hansen. He released an album in 2019, Sing To Me Instead, and I just think it's a good album, there isn't really not much more to it. Fave songs are Grow As We Go, Bad Habit, and In Case You Don't Live Forever.
and thats all for now. this has been a ramble. shout out to you if you actually read all of this, especially the mechs part.

Now that I (finally) finished watching the newest season of Doctor Who, I want to give my thoughts. This review includes spoilers, by the way.
Spyfall Part 1: 8/10. I had low expectations going into season 12, but this episode was great compared to all of last season. I loved the mystery and the monster and, of course, the big reveal. I was shocked! I absolutely adore the Master, he’s so goddamn childish. and did you know that O sent the doctor a pic of a catfish, bc he was one??
Spyfall Part 2: 9/10. After the first episode, I was excited going into this. (Since I watched this season after it all came out, I didn’t have to wait a week, fortunately.) I loved it, especially the reference to the four knocks/drums and the Master’s tissue compressor from classic Who. I think Dhawan’s Master has now become my favourite incarnation, although to be fair, I’ve only seen two other incarnations on screen. The only thing is they dropped Ryan, Yaz and Graham being fugitives of the law immediately by the end of the episode, and everyone who was present for Bartman’s presentation I guess just forgot that he has/had control over all their phones?
Orphan 55: 5/10. It started off strong. I got Midnight vibes at first, but the monster really wasn’t that good. The fact that they were all humans affected by global warming made me feel kind of pessimistic about the future, and most of the side character’s arcs ended poorly. I like the girl (I forget her name) who Ryan got a crush on, I wish she was around for more than one episode. I also like the furry girl with the tail... don’t judge pls.
Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror: 9.5/10. I love this episode so much and I’m not even sure why. The guy who played Nikola Tesla was such an amazing actor and after the episode I just wanted to know more about the real person behind him. And the Doctor’s chemistry with Tesla was so nice to watch. It really made me like Whittaker’s Doctor more, since I felt pretty iffy about her after season 11. Also the monster was good, reminded me of the spider woman from season 4.
Fugitive of the Judoon: 7/10. I thought bringing back the judoon was a weird decision, since I didn’t enjoy them during Tennant’s era very much. However, I surprisingly enjoyed their presence. Jack definitely brought the rating up for me, he’s just an extremely likeable character, but why didn’t he get to meet the Doctor? I would have loved to see her reaction (or disappointment) to seeing him again. Overall, this episode was very confusing. I liked Ruth as the forgotten doctor, but I don’t know how to feel about the Doctor having other incarnations than the ones we already know. It almost feels like Chibnall tried to create as much mystery as possible since people didn’t enjoy the lack of a storyline last season. Basically, idk.
Praxeus: 4.5/10. I kind of liked it, I guess. The mystery was intriguing, but I think there was too much here. And the girl whose friend died should definitely had more of a reaction to her FRIEND DYING IN FRONT OF HER. But, I thought the ex-officer and the astronaut (sorry, I forget their names) relationship was sad and cute. I’m so glad they didn’t kill off the astronaut, I’m tired of people dying.
Can You Hear Me?: 5/10. I would have put this at a 4, but I actually liked the story of the two gods. I would say they’re trying to fit too much story in a single episode, but I think DW is just like that in general. I’m glad the companions are finally getting some character development, that was probably the highlight of the episode.
The Haunting of Villa Diodati: 6/10. The idea of ghosts in DW is pretty cool, but I found most of the episode boring? I guess? I didn’t pay very close attention until the cyberman came on screen. It was an interesting concept, but I’ve never been super invested in ghost stories. I thought they would incorporate Mary Shelly into the story a bit more, too.
Ascension of the Cybermen: 7/10. It wasn’t bad. I’m glad they brought the cybermen back, but now I’m just confused about where they fit into the timelime? Why does the head cyberman feel emotion? Maybe it was explained in the episode but... I didn’t care much for the side characters, though I was interested in how Brendan fit into the storyline. Of course, my favourite part was the Master showing up at the end.
The Timeless Children: 8/10. This finale is leagues better than the season 11 finale, even if it retconned all of the Doctor’s past. I love seeing the Doctor and the Master together, you can just tell they had a deep connection with each other when they were children from the way they act. I thought the whole Timeless Child storyline would ruin my experience as a DW fan, but it really hasn’t changed all that much, besides making the Doctor even more of a Mary Sue/Gary Stu character than she already is. I just have one question: if the Doctor was Brendan in the past, then why was he on Earth? Maybe it will be answered next season. I guess the Master is dead now, but he’s like a cockroach, you can never kill him, so I expect he’ll be back at some point.
Overall: Maybe it’s because I haven’t watched old seasons of DW in years, but I would say this is one of the better seasons. I know I’m probably in the minority here, though. I always try to go into new seasons with an open mind because DW changes all the time and most people are not open to big changes. Whittaker is a good Doctor (and actor in general) and I feel bad that she has to deal with a lot of hate because she’s the first female Doctor. Also, all the diversity is a good thing, shut up. There literally cannot be too much diversity, that’s literally how the world is in real life. I’m looking forward for season 13. I heard Graham and Ryan might not be in the next season, sadly. And I have a strong suspicion the Captain Jack will be back (lol) to meet Thirteen.

biography !!
a middle child belonging to christopher and imogen carmichael - two stanford professors. christopher specialized in british literature whilst imogen specialized in the classics. hence the name.
the order of siblings goes as such: lysander, elektra, juno, philomena, and twins orion & valora. the deal was that everybody had a greek (or in juno’s case, roman) first name and a middle name inspired by a piece of british literature circa 1800s and under. a family of nerds, if you will.
so, clearly - right off the bat, their parents are ... eccentric. they’re both in love with their respected topic, and with each other, and with their kids. the carmichael family is a happy family.
they each have their own quirks and whatnot - though philly’s always been particularly dreamy - even as a child, she’d spend hours watching clouds or caterpillars or the leaves blow in the wind rather than play with other kids. she wasn’t a shy kid - she just had her own interests.
hardship doesn’t hit the family until philomena is five and starts having splitting headaches. they’re slow at first - but as soon as she’s seeing spots and unable to walk in a straight line, doctor appointments are made.
it doesn’t take long for them to discover the tumor, though the official diagnosis of malignant ependymoma comes a month later.
it’s grade ii but slow-moving, small enough to not be as much of a threat as worried, but big enough where removal is necessary. philomena earns a scar and brings it in for show-and-tell. for two months afterwards, philly’s at radiotherapy monday through friday.
they’re lucky - philomena’s considered cancer-free by the next year. she’s babied at first - handled delicately, as if she could break if touched - but with five other children ... it doesn’t last for too long.
and life continues as normal.
her personality doesn’t shift much over the next few years - she’s awfully independent for a kid, and awfully quiet - when she speaks it’s about faeries and bigfoot, about how the sky is so blue and if you listen quietly, you can hear the leaves whisper their secrets to each other. this is not odd.
she’s close to all her siblings, but she idolizes her older sister - elektra. elektra’s six years older and dyes her hair whatever colors she wants. elektra bought a knife off a seedy guy downtown. elektra threw away all of her heels and renounced god. elektra is god. her music is loud but it’s not heavy - it’s florence and the machine.
they’re opposites - elektra’s boisterous and feels loudly, philomena’s softer and feels...less. when elektra sneaks out, philomena keeps watch. they are a duo.
philomena is smart - but she’s fifteen and hates school. hates sitting inside all day. hates the same routine - day after day - it’s all the same. her parents’ routine is the same, philly feels contained and she wants to live.
elektra’s twenty-one and just bought a brand new spanking (used but not falling apart) 19-something volkswagen ... van - using her entire savings account. she says she’s tired of routine, she’s leaving the next day.
naturally, philomena stows away in the back and isn’t discovered until they’re two states away and she’s got to pee. elektra nearly crashes the van in shock.
it’s an argument - philomena vs. elektra, then them vs. their parents, then their parents vs. the school, the state - it’s an ordeal. philomena switches to an online program in the end.
it hurts christopher and imogen - lysander’s not having any of their nonsense, juno’s betrayed and alone - the twins are twins. in the end, it’s alright. the carmichael family is a happy family.
philomena and elektra take their time - it’s not a road trip, it’s their new life, permanently on the road. they stop and explore often - they do odd jobs in whatever town they settle in. they dine-n-dash, they shoplift. they survive in their own way.
she drops out of high school officially when she’s seventeen - they have to drive all the way back to california to deal with the wrath of their parents and to deal with paperwork, but it’s done. philomena doesn’t know what path she wants in life - but it’s not that.
it’s during this time that the episodes occur - philomena’s outside her body, philomena’s wrapped in cotton, her memories are not her own. she’s looking in the mirror and she doesn’t recognize herself. they take shelter in a city for six months, long enough for her brand spankin’ new therapist to figure out what’s wrong with her. she’s diagnosed with depersonalization / derealization disorder - they think it’s stress. philomena doesn’t get stressed. they think it’s trauma. she laughs - she never laughs.
she gets medication, and life is normal.
it’s four years later and they’re in vermont when their good ol’ trusty van - affectionately named florence - breaks down in a town called livingstone. the cost is more than they have at the moment, and they’re stuck. philomena thinks she likes the town - but she doesn’t know about the watershed.
personality !!
she’s quiet but she’s confident - her voice sounds like rustling leaves, if leaves smoked a pack of cigarettes a day.
often underestimated - philly’s petite and looks like she’d fall over if a plastic bag blew too close to her. she’s independent - for the most part. elektra is the only person philly takes orders from.
has always been considered odd - weird, strange. still talks about the trees as if they’re listening, as if they’re old friends. she’s vague and doesn’t elaborate on the things she says.
believes in pretty much any superstition you throw her way. luck is very important to her. if you ask her if the earth is flat, she’ll say probably. believes strongly in bigfoot and the lochness monster. has personally seen aliens, and loves ghosts almost more than herself.
she can be amusing - whether you ‘get’ her or not, her outlook is often bright - she talks about the negatives the same way she talks about the positives. can be seen as naive or gullible, but she’s plenty smart. even if half of her education has come directly from google.
philly doesn’t laugh. a smile, yes - often, in fact - not always reaching her ears, or bearing teeth - but these are not indicators of her happiness. philly is consistently content. she thinks many things are funny - she still will not laugh.
her voice is often monotonous - she doesn’t sound dreary, she sounds far-away. her voice carries. her emotions are often unknown to others.
is apathetic in most situations. she’s hard to bother - she’s incredibly patient and enjoys the company of most - tolerates them at the very least. it’s hard for her to express her emotions, because she feels them so little that it’s very nearly not worth it. her affection is not verbal - it’s small touches and gestures of kindness, love in her own way.
is a fan of knock-knock jokes and bad puns. she won’t crack a smile while telling you them, nor does she expect you to laugh. she just enjoys them.
she owns a motorola razr covered in puffy stickers - hasn’t ever had a smartphone. she’s a fan of emoticons. her favorite is :o)
has a lot of bruises and scratches and scars - she’s often getting herself into pickles. there are always, at the very minimum, three bandaids on each hand.
she has insomnia, so she’s awake often. is often seen wandering town - even when she shouldn’t be, even when it might be dangerous. her intuition is delayed. when she does sleep - her dreams are vivid and fantastical.
keeps a box of memories - sentimental bits and pieces she’s picked up over the last few years. there are a lot of buttons and postcards, but any teeny tiny object will do.
her style changes every week - most, if not all, of her clothes are thrifted. one week she’s baby spice and the next she’s lydia deetz. she combines pieces from different styles often - she looks like a barbie clothed by a child. she feels most comfortable like this.
will either patch-up the clothes that get too worn or reuse them in some way. sometimes donates the clothes she gets tired off - isn’t minimalistic, but she’s learned to keep only a small amount of possessions.
the only consistency is her lucky ribbon - it’s pastel yellow and silky and as thin as a shoelace. she ties it onto her outfit of the day, everyday. if she loses it, she’s lost. elektra has a matching ribbon.
has no problem with minor theft - she only takes bare minimum, puts herself and elektra first and that’s how it’s always been. she tries to be good while in livingstone - would hate to make enemies whilst florence is getting repaired.
they’re staying in a motel, currently, in the cheapest room they could get. philly will still visit florence. will sometimes go home with strangers purely to take advantage of a comfortable bed and a shower with better pressure.
it’s a common occurrence - she doesn’t sleep with them - but somehow, she weasels her way into their homes anyway. has come out mostly unscathed, on most occasions. this has been a practice ever since they’ve been on the road.
really, truly - has not slept with anybody, had her first and only kiss at thirteen with a frog. this doesn’t bother her.

Fatherly Adventures with the Captain Chapter 9: Come Home
The one thing she notices about their home is that boy, do they have a lot of books. However, when your husband is the most inquisitive man whose lived for like three hundred years and your son is the author, not just an author, but THE author- it’s to be expected.
Their house, she would say, perfectly describes their little family. Henry’s scarf and coat hangs on their coat rack, right by their front door. Killian’s leather jacket on the hook next to it, followed by her red leather jacket, tying up the whole ensemble.
Killian’s shoes are always neatly placed on their shoe rack, and let’s just say hers and Henry’s are usually haphazardly strewn across the entrance to their home.
Their living room has an open feel to it- in fact, it’s probably where you’ll find them every night after dinner. Their coffee table, handcrafted by Marco and specifically designed per her and Henry’s requests to look like a treasure chest (much to Killian’s surprise and delight), often holds cups of hot chocolate, bowls of popcorn and milk duds, as the family settles in for their movie nights. This is where Henry’s love for Star Wars, Emma’s love for the classics like Back to the Future, Breakfast Club, 16 candles, are introduced and shared with Killian. She’s worried that as Henry gets older that these movie nights might seem lame to him, but she’s already missed out on so much. But she finds that she’s got nothing to worry about- she’s got a great kid- one that gets just as pumped for movie nights as them.
She remembers when she was the Dark One wanting to incorporate little aspects of Killian into their home, but to be honest, home decorating was definitely not her focus or priority at the time. Now that they’ve settled into a more peaceful routine devoid of monsters, villains, and fairies, Killian’s added upon her choices during her stint as the Dark One Decorator. Their library with all the books has many of the maps he’s drawn as Captain proudly framed and hung. His sextant is displayed, along with the compass from his and Emma’s journey. He’s got a dart board in their library, where he’ll swear by his aim and precision. Her favorite though is when he’ll make that dopey face at her when he hits a bulls eye as she’s curled up on the lounge chair, enjoying the quiet moment and more often than not, catching up with her mom on the phone. His silly face makes her fall in love with him all over again.
The first couple of weeks since they found out that she’s pregnant, it’s only her, Killian, and Henry that know. It’s kind of exciting that this is something only the three of them know and can share, but also something that she needs. The last time she was pregnant she was in a far different situation- there was no excitement, there were no hugs or kisses. Instead there was fear- there was coldness- and those are feelings that stick with you. So while they wait for the all clear from the doctor before announcing it, she’s also working through these feelings- letting herself not feel guilty that this pregnancy is and will be different from the last, allowing herself to feel excitement over this child and being able to share this experience with Henry, even though she didn’t have it when she was pregnant with him. It’s also an eye opening experience for Killian- he’s had to confront his past demons himself- coming to terms with his father’s abandonment for his children and then Killian’s actions in retaliation.
The night before their 10 week check up with the doctor, she finds herself sandwiched in between her two boys, after finishing Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Tomorrow once they get the clear from the doctor, they’ll be telling her parents that they’ll get to be grandparents again- the youngest second time grandparents this world has ever seen. She can already hear  the high pitched noises and squeals her mother will make and she already knows her father’s not gonna be able to calm her down, ever.
Vaguely listening to the two men in her life talk about their favorite heists/pranks from the movie, she starts to imagine how soon there’ll be a high chair added to their dining room, one of those sleeper chairs that rocks the baby in their living room. She can see it now- there’ll be baby books chosen by Henry all throughout the house- their little shoes will soon find their own place with Killian’s, Henry’s and hers by their front door. It’s something she never had, something she could never give Henry, but now she gets her second chance.
“Mom, are you okay?”
She’s startled out of her own thoughts by Henry’s worried tone. Quickly placating him, she throws her arm over his shoulder and ruffles his hair- just like she’s always done from the first time he brought her to Storybrooke. “Don’t worry kid, just got lost in my own thoughts. Pretty soon our house is gonna have baby stuff and I was just imagining how that’s gonna look like.”
“It’s gonna be awesome! I was thinking- what kind of mobile should the baby have in their room? I mean, I know Grandpa and Grandma planned for unicorns in yours, but I feel like we’ve got to find a way to combine Savior and Pirate for my brother or sister.” Henry’s excitement for his new sibling was something she’s eternally grateful for each and every day. She remembers the disappointment and the sinking feeling she had when she learned her parents were having another baby. But trust Henry to not only have the heart of the truest believer, but to literally be the most excited big brother. He wanted to know everything- how big’s the baby now, what can the baby do now- can it hear? can it see? is it sucking its thumb? He made it his and Killian’s mission to make sure that she wasn’t overdoing it- they’ve called it Operation Nesting Swan- they tell her it’s a working title. “Don’t forget author, lad.” Her heart melts  hearing Killian chime in. From day one, he’s stepped into the shoes of fatherhood for Henry, never treating him any differently or distantly because he wasn’t biologically Henry’s father. And since they found out news of the baby, he’s made it abundantly clear to their son that his relationship with Henry wouldn’t change and that Henry was just as much a part of this happy beginning and addition to the family.
Henry’s smile at Killian’s suggestion brought the same to both Emma and Killian. She knew that keeping a secret from his other mom and grandparents, hell the whole town, was really tough on Henry, so she knew that once they got the okay from the doctor, he was going to be unstoppable then- he already was practically bursting at the seams. And speaking of which, she knew that there was no way she would be able to reign in Killian. Every time they’ve visited the doctor, he’s requested for a copy of the sonogram- she wouldn’t be surprised that once news spread, she would find her husband showing the whole town each and every picture.
She couldn’t believe it- how far she had come, everything she’d faced- there were definitely times where her happy ending seemed impossible, where the picket fence life seemed so unattainable. But now here she was sitting in their home- a home she made with her husband, once a lost boy, who was on the verge of becoming a father, and what a wonderful father he would be. A home she made with her son, the boy she had to give up so he could have his best chance, who now found it with her, was growing up to be everything and more than what she wanted and dreamed for him, and she would get to witness it. A home where this newest duckling, who decided at that moment to move around her belly and make their presence known, would be joining them in just a couple of months.
As she rested her hand on her growing bump to soothe her duckling, she thought, oh baby, we love you so much already and we can’t for you to come home.

oh hey, I can go hard on this one. The Doctor, by regeneration, as monsters and myths? later 10 makes me feel Prometheus?
So, I do not know Classic Who well enough to do the OG docs. It is on my list. My list is long. I will get to it.
As far as New Who goes, honestly they all kinda have that Tragic Greek Hero Figure vibe going???? But that might just be because they all share the I Had To Destroy My Own People backstory. As far as the newest developments in canon go, I am only on the fringes of awareness bc I was streaming it on Prime and Did Not Get That Far (I had barely started Twelve sobs) but what I do know is that other than Jack being back it all sounds Really Bad And Dumb. So. All that in mind...
Nine is like... Classic Cursed Monster, werewolf or some flavor, that is aware of his curse and wants to protect others by staying away from them. Of course, he’s not an introvert, no matter how bad he wants to be one, so he’s very bad at actually doing this. So obviously enter Rose, who is the plucky best friend that refuses to let him drown in his own misery and isolate himself. Am I writing an AU? Maybe, just now, because you gave me the idea. They fuck.
Ten has hella Prometheus vibes. Is losing each of his companions his equivalent of the liver getting pecked out? Ouch.
Eleven... okay, I’ll level with you, this is hard because I don’t... really... like Eleven. I don’t think I’ve made a secret of this, but in case you missed it. Uh, I think Eleven is a Trickster figure? Fae or something? Some kind of creature that Fucks Shit Up For The Lulz, and doesn’t worry too much about who he’s hurting. I know every version of the Doctor has their own angst, but man, he spends an awful lot of time doing shitty things and smiling his way through it. It’s like that Late Ten “Time Bows To Me” trait got dialed up to 11 (hah!) when he regenerated. Don’t get me wrong, he’s there to do the hero schtick when he needs to be. But... something’s gonna explode. Possibly lots of somethings. And he will not feel particularly bad about it.
Twelve is... hm. After having consulted my roommate, because I was a little stuck, we came to the conclusion that Twelve is Hephaestus. Cranky, underappreciated, likes to have a good time but still manages to be grumpy while doing it. Extremely competent and kinda rude. Poor social skills. That one applies to all the doctors though honestly.
Thirteen... so this devolved into a conversation with the roomie over the Born Sexy Yesterday trope and sexism and now all I can see in my head is Jodie Whitaker singing Part of Your World. Pick literally any story about a person or creature who is created as an adult or otherwise fully grown and has that whole... wide-eyed wonder thing going. She’s basically Wonder Woman, okay. Superhero comics are kinda like myths, right?

Hey Nicole! I love reading your tags abt the latest DW books and audio dramas you’ve started. Curious. What are your favorite DW audio drama series? Do you listen to all of it? I often find out Big Finish news by reading your tags lol
YES!!! Hi!!! No, I haven't listened to every single thing Big Finish has released (is that what you meant??? lol). I mean, I think I've barely scratched the surface, and I really only started once they got the OK to start making audios with New Who. It's honestly very overwhelming when I look at everything they've ever made and I almost never know where I want to start, and then they're just constantly releasing new stuff! But anyway some of my faves from the last few years are:
Gallifrey - I think the Gallifrey series is my number one favourite Big Finish series, I love it sooo much I love Romana and Leela and Narvin and I am so invested in Time Lord politics and I cannot wait for Gallifrey: War Room 2 to be out!!!!!!
Tenth Doctor Adventures - especially the two series with Ten and Donna, of course :')
UNIT (the new series) - I LOVE UNIT SO MUCH! Kate and Osgood MY BELOVEDS! I could listen to UNIT stories all day every day, they're so much fun. I think the newest one will be out in the summer!!
Doom Coalition - this series is an Eighth Doctor adventure and I LOVE the villain, a Time Lord called the Eleven. And I also love the Doctor's companions, Liv Chenka and Helen Sinclair. I've been jumping around with Eight's stories but I really do need to listen to more. Gotta listen to Ravenous next. I did start on some of his Time War stories but I've fallen behind on that...
The Diary of River Song - I honestly didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I do! But I love that River gets to meet so many incarnations of the Doctor :')) And special mention to the Tenth Doctor and River Song audios - I really hope they do more!!!!
Classic Doctors New Monsters - exactly what it says on the tin :D
Ninth Doctor Adventures - I'm honestly just so happy to hear Chris Eccleston as the Doctor again :')))

DC’s Swamp Thing roundup: Trailer, Premier Review, next Episodes, Public reactions and so much more
DC Universe has been killing it lately with the likes of amazing shows such as Titans and Doom Patrol. The newest addition in the comic book franchise based TV series is DC’s Swamp Thing. It looks like the makers are not afraid of taking any risks and have adopted one of the darkest comic characters.
[This post contains video, click to play]
Swamp Thing is a scientist who turns into a monster due to some experiment gone wrong. While other superheroes are either good or bad, swamp thing operates in a gray area with horror elements. Here is everything we know about DC’s Swamp Thing TV series.
Swamp Thing Trailer
youtube
DC first released a teaser announcement for Swamp Thing a few months back as a DC universe original series. The first official trailer for Swamp Thing was released on May 28, 2019, as DC was asking users to subscribe to their streaming service.
DC’s Swamp Thing stars Abby Arcane as a doctor and an investigator, who goes for a case in Louisiana about a deadly swamp residing virus. Soon, it is discovered that the swamp is now what it seems; it holds supernatural and terrifying secrets. New horrors and deadly chills start emerging from the dark marsh water, and no one is safe in the small town.
Cast and Characters
Even though the swamp thing is the titular character of the show, his POV is rarely shown to maintain the horror elements. Most of the characters are residents of the small town, where the swamp thing resides. Everyone’s life is affected when a mysterious swamp shows up connected with a series of murders. Here are the main cast members of DC’s Swamp Thing, along with their character names.
Crystal Reed as Abby Arcane
Virginia Madsen as Maria Sunderland
Andy Bean and Derek Mears as Alec Holland / Swamp Thing
Henderson Wade as Matt Cable
Maria Sten as Liz Tremayne
Jeryl Prescott as Madame Xanadu
Will Patton as Avery Sunderland
Swamp Thing Premier
The first episode of DC’s Swamp Thing was premiered on May 31 at the Dc universe streaming service. Swamp Thing starts as a typical horror show, with men rowing boat in unknown dark water. It starts getting violent soon when a strange plant kills two of them, and the remaining succumbs to a mysterious illness.
Rest of the episode deals with solving the murder mystery and the origin of the Swamp Thing at the end. Critics have liked the horror element of the show and given it a 90% RT score.
Total Episodes
Earlier it was stated that DC’s Swamp Thing would have a total of 13 episodes as the usual like Titans. But after the production started, the main producers and WB studios were not happy with and decided to cut it short. Since James Wan is the executive producer of the show, he managed to save the show from cancellation. There will be a total of 10 episodes now in the DC’s Swamp Thing original series.
Plot Details
The story starts, when Dr. Abby Arcane of CDC comes to the town to treat the disease. She, along with the help of another scientist Alec Holland, begins to investigate the virus. Things start getting messy when an unknown creature murders more people.
In the end, Alec is shown by an assailant, and his body succumbs to the green vines. Alec turns into the Swamp Thing, with a tall mossy body and red eyes. It is reported that the remaining episodes will deal with Alec and the Swamp Thing coming to terms and have a mutual existence. Along with that, the people responsible for cutting the swamp forest will be targeted by the green monster Swamp Thing.

Episode 1 of #SwampThing is perfect horror comic book love. The score, atmosphere and cast is great. The horror element is 100% all in. It’s got a TV-MA rating that has scenes reminiscent of John Carpenter’s “THE THING”. I’m in love with this show so far. Can’t wait for Ep. 2 pic.twitter.com/beAO5sKqop

Really dug the first episode of #SwampThing. One incredible sequence of practical effects body horror and some quality character work. Love the chemistry between Abby and Alec, which bodes well for what’s coming next. Only wish I didn’t have to wait for more!

The question raised by every new iteration of the Doctor — the central character of the long-running, 55-year-old British sci-fi franchise Doctor Who — seems simple, but offers endless variations on a single theme: Will the latest version of the show focus on the alien Doctor? Or will it pay more attention to the humans who join the newest Time Lord on the TARDIS?
Prior to now, Doctor Who has had two showrunners in its modern era, which began in 2005 with the relaunch of the series by the first of those two showrunners, Russell T. Davies. And during their respective tenures, Davies and his eventual replacement, Steven Moffat, took the show in opposite directions.
Davies’s Doctor was a whimsical madman, to be sure, but Davies was far more interested in the humans who became entangled in the Doctor’s orbit over the four seasons he ran the series.
Moffat, who took over the show in season five, was far more interested in the Doctor’s ability to solve any puzzle; while the humans on the TARDIS were frequently fascinating, it was clear his sympathies were always with the Doctor. And over the course of Moffat’s six seasons as showrunner, that approach became exhausting, at least to me.
Thus, the most welcome element of “The Woman Who Fell to Earth” — the first episode of Doctor Who under its new showrunner Chris Chibnall and the first to star a woman in the role of the Doctor — was how both Chibnall and new Doctor Jodie Whittaker pushed the focus just a little bit more back toward the people who are pulled into the Doctor’s orbit.
The Doctor meets some new friends. BBC Studios 2018
In watching “The Woman Who Fell to Earth,” I kept thinking back to two different debuts of new Doctors — 2005’s “The Christmas Invasion” (the first with David Tennant as the Doctor) and 2010’s “The Eleventh Hour” (the first with Matt Smith as the Doctor).
In the case of the former, the story similarities were obvious; both that episode and this one involve the Doctor struggling to stop an alien menace while in the process of regenerating into a new form. But I was also struck by how Whittaker’s gleefully altruistic spin on the Doctor immediately felt more akin to Tennant’s version than that of her immediate predecessor, Peter Capaldi (who imagined the character as a sort of gruff but good-natured building superintendent for the entire universe).
“The Eleventh Hour,” however, came to mind in terms of its contrast. That episode started with a human being — Amy Pond, a woman who first met the Doctor as a young girl — but it barely left the Doctor’s side as he tried to work out a mystery that kept drawing him back to Amy over the years. It was a sign that Moffat, who took over as showrunner with that episode just as Chibnall did with this one, was making a break from Davies’s sometimes cheesy but always humanistic approach to Doctor Who, in favor of elaborate structural games and puzzle-solving.
I haven’t seen any episodes of season 11 beyond “The Woman Who Fell to Earth,” but based on Chibnall’s approach to it, I’d wager that he’s going to write the show as a kind of workplace ensemble drama that just happens to be set across all of time and space. It takes the Doctor around 15 minutes to show up, and when she does, she’s discombobulated, dropping from the sky into a train where humans are being threatened by an alien. Before that, his focus is squarely on those humans.
Throughout the episode, he fully develops four different human characters, in addition to Whittaker’s new Doctor, then gives all of them their own storylines to pursue, which dovetail in the group’s final confrontation with the alien. It’s closer to Davies’s approach than Moffat’s, but it’s also not quite like either man’s spin on the material. I’m surprised Chibnall found a way to thread the needle.
Some of the episode’s human characters get a bit less shading than others — Yasmin (Mandeep Gill), the cop called to the scene of an alien spacecraft landing, is defined largely through what other characters say about her — but that’s likely because the hour is more focused on the familial bonds between a young man named Ryan (Tosin Cole), his grandmother Grace (Sharon D. Clarke), and her new husband Graham (Bradley Walsh), whom Ryan has a strained relationship with. It’s not as if future episodes won’t bring more shading to the others as well, and Chibnall’s strength building out an ensemble cast on his earlier series Broadchurch promises dividends for this approach.
Ultimately, “The Woman Who Fell to Earth” is more of a statement of purpose than anything else. Yes, there will be aliens and monsters and classic Doctor Who adventures. But this latest iteration of the show is also going to be a story that positions the humans who board the TARDIS (presuming they eventually board the TARDIS — it’s missing as of episode’s end) as an ad hoc family, with the Doctor as the matriarch.
So, then, how is the new Doctor? Quite wonderful, I’d say.
The very pointed makeup of Doctor Who’s new cast — a white woman, an older white guy, an older black woman, then two younger actors of color — is perhaps easy to read in light of the Brexit vote, which was driven, in part, by anxieties over the cultural shift that immigration brought to the United Kingdom (and, okay, also a healthy dose of outright racism).
Indeed, the Doctor all but makes this explicit in the closing moments of the episode, when she says that her own regeneration is a symbol of what human beings have to do to keep their nations and institutions fresh. You can honor the past while still evolving into something new in the present, she says; it’s not hard to imagine her unfurling a banner reading, “REMAIN” and cavorting it around the set.
But at the same time, there’s a much more immediately obvious reason for her to give this speech: Whittaker is the first woman to play this part, after 12 men got the chance. There are still concerns over just how much ground is being broken by giving a role that was previously held by a bunch of white men to a white woman, a tactic that many shows have used to appear diverse without even beginning to deal with all of the other systems of oppression built into society (as outlined in this article for TV Guide by Mo Ryan). But the fact remains that some people are hopping mad to see Whittaker play the Doctor, and yet if they want to keep watching Doctor Who, they’re going to have to keep watching Jodie Whittaker.
It’s impossible to conclude much of anything about a given Doctor from one episode — I dearly missed Christopher Eccleston for Tennant’s first few hours, but Tennant eventually became my favorite modern Doctor — but Whittaker’s first outing as the character is a promising start. She’s hampered a bit by the curious decision to have her regeneration result in at least partial amnesia for much of the episode, but that makes her ultimate statement of purpose near the end, when she reclaims the mantle of Doctor and vows to help, heal, and fix the universe, all the more powerful, so I’ll allow the initial confusion.
And that initial confusion mirrors what I’ll imagine certain portions of the audience are feeling too, especially viewers who might be missing Moffat’s Doctor or a male Doctor or [insert descriptor of choice] Doctor, or who might long for some earlier era of the show. (Maybe they hope it will once again become the children’s educational program it was initially meant to be.) Chibnall knows he can’t simply treat this change as business as usual, even if his storytelling instincts keep guiding him back to the Doctor Who tried and true.
He still does the bit where the new Doctor expresses surprise and excitement at her new form, where she chooses her new costume (after running around in Capaldi’s for almost the entire episode), where she rediscovers her sense of purpose. These are all hallmarks of the “first episode with a new Doctor” subgenre of the show.
However, both Chibnall and his star intuitively understand how these tropes shift, ever so slightly, when there’s a woman at their center. There is not, for instance, a montage of Whittaker trying on new outfits. Instead, she just emerges in her new, slightly geeky get-up. (She’s wearing suspenders??)
But the biggest change from Moffat’s Doctor is something much harder to spot, something ingrained in the storytelling from the very first scene, on Earth, with a young man trying to understand the course of his life so far, instead of out in the cosmos with a superhero trying to save the world. It signals that Chibnall is intent on making this story instantly understandable to you, even if all you know about Doctor Who is that the Doctor’s name isn’t literally Who. Season 11, all involved realize, is a great chance for the Who-curious to hop on board, to discover why this franchise is so beloved across the entire planet.
The cynic in me says it is simply a chance to put new packaging on very old stories. But the part of me that loves Doctor Who but always got a little bogged down by the sheer weight of trying to follow Moffat’s many convolutions felt a simple happy gratitude at a clean story, well-told. Moffat’s Doctor Who was for the hardcore. There’s nothing wrong with that, but there’s a whole universe of people who’ve never seen the show but who might also want to plunge headlong into the cosmos alongside a geeky, empathetic hero who always, always saves the day.
Maybe I’ll go watch “The Woman Who Fell to Earth” again.
Doctor Who’s 11th season premiere continues to air throughout the week on BBC America, including repeat airings on Sunday, October 7, at 3:30 pm, 6 pm, 8 pm, and 10 pm Eastern.
