Friday, October 27: Soilwork, "Ghosts and Thunder"
R.I.P. David Andersson (1975-2022)
Ola Flink left Soilwork shortly before they went in to record The Ride Majestic, leaving frontman Björn “Speed” Strid as their sole remaining original member.  But the bigger story behind the band’s tenth album was its tentative but decisive steps away from the sound they parlayed to international success over their previous five albums: “Ghosts and Thunder” had almost nothing to do with melodic death metal, and even though it was written solely by Strid, it was of a piece with the David Andersson compositions in a way that illustrated just how much the guitarist had become a co-captain alongside the singer instead of merely a musical partner and foil.  There were flourishes that nodded to the past, but the track was esoteric and dynamic in a way that The Living Infinite barely hinted at.  “Ghosts and Thunder” pointed towards a much more progressive direction, and in that respect was a key stepping stone before the band really explored more adventurous avenues on Verkligheten.

I actually quite like a good chunk of soilwork's new stuff, but god i would explode if they made another album in the style of Stabbing the Drama. It feels a lot more raw and angry and i think it suits them a little better than the Grand Melodrama

Don’t have flour? NO PROBLEM!
Just use a handful of dirt!
Will it taste good? No!
Will it work? Also no!
But it’s free and in your backyard today!

Friday, April 14: Soilwork, “The Undying Eye”
R.I.P. David Andersson (1975-2022)
The Underworld EP appeared as an addendum to Verkligheten, and its four tracks were something of a bridge between the more progressive approach Soilwork began adopting around The Ride Majestic and the more straightforward songwriting of their previous material.  As it was, “The Undying Eye” was both direct and a bit woolly, with David Andersson’s music and lyrics flowing nicely but also feeling abstract to the point of inscrutable.  What made it work was the band’s confidence- Andersson was a rather instinctive writer, and Björn "Speed" Strid clearly relished the chance to be more adventurous with his singing.  There was a strange dichotomy at work on “The Undying Eye”, as it was just as melodic and catchy as previous Soilwork numbers, but also felt completely distinct from what they had done before.  In that way the track showed just how far the band had come, and presented them in the midst of a rather intriguing evolution.
