Always make more than enough food for your guests that are coming over for dinner.

I know this may be a given for hosting but I have been to many a small gatherings where the host has not cooked enough food to serve the guests without conserving food or not eating themselves.

This may not be a problem when serving close friends but when entertaining in-laws or people you want to impress or return to your home this is a must. The simple solution to this problem is always overestimate how many you are serving or assume that at least 50% of your guests will be eating a second helping, and include yourself.

Going along with this topic you, as the host, do not serve yourself or eat until you have seen that the rest of your guests have served themselves or started eating. Another tradition you may run into is that often the men will not eat until both the women and the children are seated and already eating. Happy Hosting!

I appreciate that there is a focus on creating support for trans kids. I do wish there was some acknowledgment that trans adults are hurting, too. Like, yes, put resources toward the kids. Maybe just don't put all the resources there.

Phillip Ford, who spoke in opposition to the bill, was representing multiple groups. He stated in his speech that the mere hearing of anti-trans bills would result in a negative mental health impact to 94% of queer youth in the state, and 42% of queer youth considering suicide, citing a Trevor project study. “I was one of those youths,” he said, “several years ago when they passed the amendment banning marriage equality.”

Again, I get that the focus of so many of these is queer kids, but I don't think they are the only ones having negative health impacts because of the hearing of these bills, and acting as if they are only buys into the right wing's framing.

Or they don't care only about queer kids. They are attacking queer kids because that was one of the things that stuck when they were looking for wedges. Sports is another. Which is why you're seeing so many of them targeting trans kids' participation in sports.

Their goal is to eliminate queer people entirely and focusing the whole argument against being cruel to children or in favor of parental rights leaves us unprepared when they eventually continue the eliminationist push beyond youth (though it's looking like a lot sooner rather than later).

The South Carolina Constitution provides a right to privacy that includes the right to abortion, the state’s Supreme Court ruled on Thursday, saying “the decision to terminate a pregnancy rests upon the utmost personal and private considerations imaginable.”

The decision overturns the state’s law banning abortions after roughly the sixth week of pregnancy. More broadly, it is a victory for abortion rights in the South, where states have severely restricted access.

It is the first final ruling by a state Supreme Court on the state constitutionality of abortion since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June, which ended the right to abortion under the federal constitution that had been in force for half a century, and left the matter to the states.

Valentine’s Day EGL Meet, 2023

In case you didn’t know, EGL stands for Elegant Gothic Lolita and has been an easy way to group the subculture fashions. The South Florida Lolitas do require wearing lolita style at formal meets which entails a certain modesty, color/accessory coordination, and dress shape. 

We went to Vienna café in the Davie area, a place we have held meets twice before. It is unassumingly located in a Publix plaza with décor completely contrary to its name: that of the British monarchy, complete with cardboard cut-outs of the Queen (RIP).

It was a great turnout with a few new faces and members we hadn’t seen in a while, including a new gothic lolita! (I have a long fascination with Gothic subculture, long before I got into EGL. Plus, I’m selling a sweet style dress so I can buy a Baby gothic JSK or OP soon...).

I opted to take only a few photos as the cafe is small (I need a wider lens) and I wanted to enjoy our high tea and conversation! I edited these photos a tad to give them a dreamier look while sticking with a journalistic style of documentation.
