The government will submit a bill for a new law aimed at providing relief to people who have been financially exploited by religious groups during the current session of parliament, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Tuesday.[...]

Kishida said he agreed with Yamaguchi that the new law would ban religious groups from soliciting donations in a “socially unacceptable and malicious” manner, as well as allow people to cancel donations to – and demand compensation for the damage incurred by – religious groups.

The law would also enable children and spouses of followers to get relief for their financial suffering, he said.

Native American tribes from Michigan, Wisconsin and Ontario have come together to call for an end to the Line 5 pipeline.

The Enbridge Line 5 crude oil pipeline, first constructed in 1953, stretches from Wisconsin through 645 miles of Michigan and ends in Sarnia, Ontario. Part of the pipeline travels underwater through the Straits of Mackinac.

In recent years, the pipeline's continued operation has become a source of controversy. Many tribal nations and communities claim that the pipeline goes through their traditional territories. The Straits area in particular is considered a place of significant cultural and historical importance to many native groups, including the Anishinaabe. According to tribal leaders, the pipeline poses a major and direct threat to the ecosystems along its path.

“The Straits of Mackinac are [...] sacred from both a cultural and historical perspective in the formation of the Anishinaabe people,” said Austin Lowes, chairperson of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, in a statement. “Protecting the Straits is also a matter of the utmost environmental and economic importance — both to our people and the state of Michigan.”

Tribal leaders and other environmental groups have publicly opposed the pipeline for many years and have called for the pipeline to be shut down.

Supporters of the pipeline point out that it transports 540,000 barrels of light crude oil and natural gas liquids through Line 5 on a daily basis. [...]

In an effort to address safety concerns, Enbridge has proposed an underwater tunnel to house the portion of Line 5 that runs under the Straits of Mackinac. [...] Critics of the tunnel project say no oil should be transported through the Straits at all, as a spill could have a devastating impact on more than 700 miles of Great Lakes shoreline. [...]

Previous attempts to shut down the pipeline have been stopped through various means, mostly the 1977 Transit Pipeline Treaty between Canada and the United States.

The latest attempt saw 51 tribal organizations from Wisconsin, Michigan and Ontario submit a report to the United Nations Human Rights Council. This report, dated April 4, claims that the Government of Canada is violating the human rights of Indigenous peoples through its continuous support for Line 5.

The report was submitted to be considered during Canada's upcoming Universal Periodic Review, conducted by the United Nations. As a United Nations member state, Canada is required to be evaluated for its human rights record on a regular basis.

Canada's Universal Periodic Review will take place this year on Nov. 6-17.

The 51 different tribal organizations that signed the report include: The Anishinabek Nation, which represents 39 First Nations throughout the province of Ontario, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians, Bay Mills Indian Community, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians, Hannahville Indian Community, Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, Match-e-be-nash-she-wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians, Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi, Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

Las Vegas police on Tuesday arrested eight teenagers on murder charges in connection with the death of Jonathan Lewis, a 17-year-old who was pummeled by a mob of his classmates in an alley outside their high school, authorities said.

The eight suspects charged with murder are between 13 and 17 years old, said Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Jason Johansson in a news conference on Tuesday. Police along with the district attorney's office are beginning the process to charge them as adults. Johansson added that there's no evidence indicating the attack was "a hate crime."

On Nov. 1, students from Rancho High School, including Jonathan, met in an alley just across the street from the campus to fight over "stolen wireless headphones and, possibly, a stolen marijuana vape pen," Johansson said. Police believe the items were stolen from Jonathan's friend but once they were all in the alley, it was Jonathan who fought instead.

Johansson said as soon as the first punch was thrown, 10 people swarmed Jonathan, pulled him to the ground and began kicking, punching and stomping him.

After the fight, a passerby found the teenager unconscious in the alley and carried him to the school, where staff performed CPR. First responders rushed him to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, where it was soon determined that he had suffered "non-survivable head trauma," Johansson said. Jonathan died several days later.

Police search for two more suspects, ask public for help

Videos of the incident – called "extremely disturbing" and "void of humanity" by police officials – circulated social media and were used by investigators to identify eight of the 10 suspects. On Tuesday, police and the FBI coordinated arrests of the eight students and executed search warrants at nine homes throughout Las Vegas. Johansson said clothing worn by teenagers in the video and cellphones were recovered.

Las Vegas police will be releasing photos of the remaining suspects and urged the public to assist investigators in identifying them. Johansson asked that people submit footage of the incident to police and called on parents to speak with their children about the videos, which have been shared widely across multiple social media platforms.

"If you're a mentor with youth, if you're a parent, you have to assume that your kids have seen this video ... don't put your head in the sand," Johansson said. "Please talk with your kids about it and explain – people need to know right from wrong and that this act was heinous."

Jonathan's father seeks 'deeper justice'

Jonathan Lewis Sr., an electrician who lives in Austin, Texas, said his son was "a hero" who stuck up for his friend.

"That's just the kind of person he was," Lewis, 38, told USA TODAY. He described his son as an avid hip-hop fan who liked to make digital art.

Lewis said when he got the phone call that Jonathan was attacked and in the hospital, he could "could barely walk."

His family arranged to get him a flight to Las Vegas, where he and Jonathan's mother stayed at their son's bedside for days. During that time, they started planning a foundation that would address youth violence issues through counseling, mentorships and after-school programs.

Lewis created a website for the foundation, Team Jonathan, and is beginning to work on what he hopes becomes a nonprofit that'll prevent incidents like what happened to his son.

"Justice is a much much deeper issue to me than these children go to prison," Lewis said. "This is an all-encompassing issue that involves all of humanity and how we behave and the lack of empathy and compassion that we have. I just feel like my son's legacy deserves a deeper justice."

Analyzing Invention: Some Data for the Inventor's Fair 2023

As a way of introduction, the Inventor's Fair is a Magic: the Gathering card design contest blog here on Tumblr. Each week, a contest is announced and members of the community submit designs throughout the week meeting the design specifications. At the end of the week, a few winners and runner-ups are selected, with commentary given by a series of judges. It's a fun exercise in creativity, one that I have participated since November 2022.

This past week, I decided to go back and compile some data about the blog, from January 1st, 2023 to Dec 2nd, 2023. I got some general data and then did a dive into data on the winners and runners-up. I would have loved to look at data for all of the entrants (on average, 23 each contest), but that was just a little too much for the time I have.

To start, let's look at that general data:

To start off, there have been 48 contests thus far during the year, with 4 more potentially planned (yes, Dec 31st would be the posting date for one of the contests, so it is technically a 2023 contest).

In the above graph, I included a 3-week rolling average as a trendline: basically the average shown for a week is the average of that week with the two weeks preceding).

The highest participation happened from February to mid-May, which corresponds to the Spring Semester in the US school system (my area of experience).

The contest with the greatest number of entrants: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work, which started on April 16 and had 36 entrants.

The contest with the lowest number of entrants: Re:Vision, which was the most recent contest and had only 8 entrants.

Now let's dive into some of the stats around the winners and runners-up:

There have been 50 unique entrants who have been either a winner or a runner-up so far this year. Many entrants have been part of the contests since the beginning of the year. The most recent entrant to have their first win/runner-up was @aethernalstars, in the Nov 12th contest Lost Caverns of Ixalan's Lost Vault.

The entrants with the highest numbers of wins/runners-up so far:

@spooky-bard: 22 total, with 16 wins

@izzet-always-r-versus-u: 16 total, with 10 wins

@nine-effing-hells: 15 total, with 7 wins

@hypexion: 14 total, with 5 wins

(tie) @deg99 and @bread-into-toast: 13 total, with 8 and 7 wins

Congrats to these entrants for some spectacular submissions!

So what makes a winning entry? Mostly the awesome creativity of the entrants, but here are some stats about the cards themselves that I found interesting.

By far the most popular card type was creature (and this includes Artifact Creature and Enchantment Creature submissions). Granted, there were several contests asking for creatures, like Rebels and Dragons. But it is such an overwhelming favorite that I just had to call it out.

As a note on other, I lumped things like planes and phenomenon into a single group, just to keep things simple (since there weren't that many)

Here, there has not been any contests for making cards in a specific color. However, red is a clear favorite among entrants. This is a mix of mono-red and multi-color including red cards. Black, white and blue are all closely tied for the 2nd most popular card, with green being fifth amongst the colors. I included colorless, but that being a low count is to be expected as I looked at color identity instead of cost, so many land submissions were pulled into one of the color categories.

Here, we see that the most common mana value of cards was 3 - 84 cards total! 4 (with 60) and 2 (with 41) came in 2nd and 3rd.

Entrants seem to really like submitting Rares (114 total) and Uncommons (92 total), as they made up almost 75% of all entries. The number for commons will get a small bump from a recent contest that is currently being judged: One for the Money, but nowhere near enough to dethrone the other two.

SO, if you were to submit a card, it seems like the best chance for a winning submission is a red/partially red creature that is rare/uncommon and has a mana value of 3/4. Looks like a Santa Clause card is up for the next few weeks ;)

How many contributors will be accepted? How many pieces per contributor?

Determined based on number of submissions! The zine will likely be capped around 50 pages due to physical and financial constraints.

What is the contributor compensation (including merch)?

Contributors get free physical and digital copies of the zine, shipping included. Merch will be determined based on the success of the zine.

Is traditional art allowed?

Yes, it must be scanned in high quality (at least 300 dpi).

The Merlin Library’s Merlin Finale 10 Year Anniversary Prompt Challenge

The Merlin Library is celebrating the decade anniversary after the Merlin Season 5 finale left behind one of the most memorable television endings and emotionally devastated all of its viewers as it aired on the night before Christmas…ahem. The Merlin Finale 10 Year Anniversary Prompt Challenge is a ‘prompt’ challenge designed to capture elements of each episode as the 5th season celebrates its 10th anniversary since airing. Each week is dedicated to a specific episode until the week of the finale, where the two episodes aired within days of each other.

This fest runs for 12 weeks, starting on October 6th with the original airing date of Arthur’s Bane: Part 1, and ending with Diamond of the Day: Part 2 on December 24th. 

All creators are welcome to participate. Content is open to fic, art, edits, gifs, manips, meta, poetry, podfic, and whatever else you can creatively come up with during these 12 weeks.

You do not need to do something for each week, but there will be a special prize for those who do. Participate as much or as little as you want.

HOW DO PROMPTS WORK?

The themes of each week are dedicated to the episode that aired. You can write fix-it fics for each episode, or fanart related to that episode, or use the word prompts or color prompts for whatever you make. The content you make doesn’t have to be specific to that episode or an ‘episode tag’ art/fic necessarily. 

The prompts are meant to inspire you, not box your creative muse in. You can interpret the prompts as literally or loosely as you want. 

The only prompt requirement is that whatever you create is set in or around the canon era Merlin universe. The fest aims to celebrate the show Merlin and it’s original setting. As great as fusions, fandom crossovers, and modern setting AU content are, this is not the fest for that.

You may combine this fest with other ongoing challenges (ie: Merlin Bingo, Kinkalot, etc).

Each prompt week opens from the point at which the episode would have aired. However, there won’t be a deadline for when you post a prompt if it’s from an earlier week, and you have until the 25th of December to post. The Villainous Timeline (Part 1): Flug & Miss Heed

Made this theory to calculate, breakdown and understand the Villainous Timeline. (I will be making 2 or 3 parts as ran out of space for photos.😅)

Part 3: SunBlast and Miss Heed

Alan mentioned on Instagram that:

"The Villainous timeline so far followed real life (as shown on Miss Heed and Penumbra's Instagram) but when the show airs, it’ll slow down and follow its own timeline as they wait for more episodes to release, but it’ll be similar to ours. As we know, all actual real events happened in Villainous and BH even had some influence over them, so I’m sure they’ll still follow ours but at a different pace."

So 3 points to note:

The Villainous Timeline Follows our Time line but at a different pace.

The timeline slows down when the show airs.

BH has some influence over real events happening.

This is confirmed here as when the show airs in 2021, in Episode 4, the date here (in red) is shown as 14 Jul 2021.

So Given the Ages and Timeline:

Flug is 26 yrs old in Aug 2019

So in Aug 2022 Flug is 29 yrs old. (until Aug 2023, when he becomes 30 yrs old)

Flug's Journal and Demecia's Diary came out on 21st Feb 2022

Flug said in his book “I have been working as the chief scientist of the Black Hat Organization for approximately 8-10 years.” [Google Translate]

Flug's P.E.A.C.E. files mentioned he has been working in Black Hat Organization since March 10, 2011.

21st Feb 2022 - 10 Mar 2011 = 10 years 11 months, 11 days.

So, Flug has been working in BlackHat Org years for 10 years (11 months, 11 days) - (Note: round up to 11 yrs for easier calculation)

29 yrs old - 11 years = 18 yrs old.

Based on the year in the photo of Flug’s Thesis in Episode 6, we can conclude that Flug's thesis started out and was finished on the Year 2005. If it was longer there would be a time range. (e.g. 2005 - 2006)

2022 - 2005 = 17 years

29 yrs - 17 years = 12 yrs old

If they follow Mexico School System, Black Hat Institution should either start in early July or late Aug.

So Flug started going to school either in Jul/Aug 2005

So Flug was 12 years old when he met Miss Heed and started going to Black Hat Institution. (So they started at middle school age)

This was probably the class photo taken on the 1st day of school.

It's shown he was celebrating Halloween so this picture should take place on the 31st Oct, so they've known each other around 2-3 months at this time.

According to this article, It takes around 2-6 months to write a thesis

So maybe Flug has to submit his thesis at the end of the year in Dec 2005 before Christmas, as there were no Christmas decorations (I think even if BlackHat hates Christmas, the Villains would probably celebrate Christmas in their own evil way)

So Miss Heed probably stole Flug's thesis in Nov-Dec 2005 and left to become a hero at the age of 12 yrs old.

So, Flug and Miss Heed knew each other for about 4-5 months.

According to Miss Heed's P.E.A.C.E. Files, she was 17 yrs old while the experiments were being conducted.

17 yrs old - 12 yrs old = 5 years.

So does that mean that Miss Heed was experimented on at P.E.A.C.E. when she was 12 years old, for 5 years before she got her powers at the age of 17 yrs old? (Unless something happened between the 5 yr gap.)

Also, According to her P.E.A.C.E. Files, she needed to train her powers, which might take a few months or immediately.

So this picture with Flug staring at the TV looking at Miss Heed, might be when he is 17 - 18 yrs old before he joined Black Hat Organization.

Conclusion:

-> Flug has been working in BHO for 10 yrs 11 months, 11 days, since he was 18 yrs old.

-> Flug and Miss Heed were 12 yrs old when they met each other for about 4-5 months.

-> Afterwards, in the same year Miss Heed left to become a hero and might have been experimented on for 5 years before she developed her powers at the age of 17 years old.

Update setelah beberapa hari calming myself down: kemarin full seharian di rumah istirahat aja yang banyak. Malam juga berusaha untuk tidur cepat karena ternyata masih pusing-pusing dan hidung tersumbat betul-betul sepertinya akan kena flu sih ini (padahal udah vaksin flu?). 

Barusan akhirnya keluar rumah karena diajakin Hanif buat makan siang dan makanlah kami (aku, Hanif, dan Bang Reybi) di Nando’s George St. SANGAT ENAK, DAN SANGAT KENYANG HHH ALHAMDULILLAH YAALLAH. Sekarang ini di Radcam karena tadi keluar rumah nggak bawa laptop samsek (karena berat). Gatau juga goalnya apa ini kerja hari ini. Jujur masih belum bisa pick myself up banget sejak email rejection itu… Ku udah ngemail co-authors juga dan ngirim reviews-nya ke mereka dan setting up meeting Rabu pagi jam 10 sih… Udah booking konseling uni juga Selasa sore. Terus udah… Apa lagi yang harus dikerjain gatau… Dari besok postdocku bakal away sampe 20-an Nov(?) (lama juga ye dia pergi). Spvku malah baru balik besok. Hhhh emang ga jodoh aja schedule semua orang. Ku cukup yakin nanti Rabu yang dateng cuma 2 kolaborator dan postdocku, karena kedua spv-ku sudah bilang “gausah tungguin gw yah”, baiklah. Gapapa tapi udah ada yang bisa aja udah bagus. 

Ku masih mayan upset tapi ga separah Minggu dan Senin kemarin sih. Terus ku dapat message sangat baik dari Mba Mita HUHU (cc @peminumteh) yang membuatku sadar bahwa ku udah bisa ngeluarin ke jurnal aja tuh untuk anak PhD tahun ke-3 (kemarin pertama kali submit Nov 2022 --- WOW SUDAH SETAHUN YANG LALU???) udah keren banget. Dan beneran sih, kadang suka ngerasa ga enak gitu kalau share lagi sedih kena reject gini ke teman-teman se-office gitu misalnya. Ada yang setahun di atasku masih berkutat dengan mikroskop lagi ngejar submit dan belum dapet cc buat submit ke luar, ada juga yang seangkatan-ku dan baru mau di-acc chapter 1-nya (BARU MAU dibaca). And here I am yang chapter 1 ini udah dibaca ber-RATUS-RATUS kali oleh >5 orang (including reviewers dan editors ada 10 orang kali), terus menangis karena dibilang tulisannya kureng. Betul-betul untitled kid. 

BERSUKUR NONNNNN. Tapi ya valid juga kan ngerasa sedih walaupun at the same time juga bersyukur?? Apakah keduanya ekstrim polar opposite? Apakah kalau kita sedih dapet 98 instead of 100 artinya kita ga bersukur sama si 98 itu? Kan nggak juga??? Jujur sekarang w adalah Jimin. HAHA RANDOM tapi kalau kalian nonton documentary-nya BTS di Burn The Stage, Jimin MENANGIS after going off-key YANG MANA GAADA ORANG YANG NYADAR YA TOLONG. Ku pas nonton itu kaya upset banget kaya ??? BRO SEHAT??? Terus yaudah sekarang I’m just Jimin?? Kayak… NON SEHAT??? 

Ainna kemarin juga ngasih komen sangat baik di postingan sebelumnya (HUHU terima kasih Ainna *emoji peluk*). Terus banyak deh replies dari teman-teman lain di insta setelah ku-post skrinsot-an post terakhir tumblr juga di insta. 

Udah sih. Plannya weekend ini cuma kelas aja Sabtu-Minggu jam 8-10, terus mengundang Aji dkk mau masak opor di rumah di hari Minggu… Oh iya, dari kemarin juga lagi ngabisin Brooklyn Nine-Nine lagi setelah sekian lama dan emang kadang ada episode yang bobrok banget aja lucu banget sampai ku ingin menangis (fav-ku masih interaksi kebodoran antara Jake dan Captain Holt). Belum lama juga abis ngabisin Lupin. Lagi pengen nonton yang drama-drama sampah gitu deh padahal, modelan PLL atau Revenge. Ada seri apa lagi sih, recommend me tvshow dong anyone.

POSTING CLAIMS ARE THIS WEEKEND

Hello, all! We just sent out an email with a reminder about posting claims and a link to the claims form, which will open at 8:00AM CST on September 9 and close at 11:59PM CST on September 10.

You can find our posting expectations here.

A few reminders for posting:

Only one team member needs to submit the claims form. It can be anyone on the team.

Any date between October 1, 2023 - January 15, 2024 can be claimed.

To try to keep posting somewhat even, we are only allowing three team slots per day for posting. Once all slots are taken, that day will no longer be available. If needed, we may open a fourth slot on some days. Days are claimed on a first-come, first-serve basis during claims weekend.

All members of the team are expected to be 100% completed and ready to post their projects on the date chosen, so be sure to communicate with your teammates about what day works best for everyone. Accommodations can be made if requested!

We will have a two week extension period set aside from January 16 - January 31, 2024. Those two weeks will be assigned when extensions are requested after posting claims.

*Note: If you haven't received an email with the link to the claims form, please let a mod know!

Additionally, due to some mod changes and general requests for more time, we have shifted around and updated the bang schedule.

The main takeaways from the new schedule are:

We have gotten rid of our 90% check-in. Instead, our September check-in will be for the 75% draft for writers and a 50% completion check for artists. That will be our only check-in.

The final deadline has been shifted back from October 1 to November 1. October is remaining as a potential posting month for those teams who are already completed, but no one will be required to be done until Nov. 1.
