One frustrating thing about being a mathematician is that people who aren't into math heard that Einstein quote that's like "you haven't understood something unless you can explain it in layman's terms" and use it to mean "if it can't be explained to me in five minutes it's needlessly complicated, this person is a pretentious snob and academia is gatekeeping knowledge". And like everything in life, the matter of scientists not being able to/not caring to explain their work to people who aren't at the same level of expertise as them is a complex one that is worthy of being discussed, but here's the thing that you have to keep in mind if you haven't done math since high school:

the further you get into math, the more specialized your field becomes. You start working of puzzles that are small, but fit into a greater web of similar problems, like knitting a beautiful flower that's meant to be incorporated into a huge quilt. And all of math is build on top of each other, so you can't get to the most interesting, current math being discussed in the world without getting through the building blocks that are taught to you in elementary school, high school and the university.

You ask me to explain my thesis to you and I can tell you the title, but you won't know what the main words in it mean. And that's not because you are stupid, that's just because to learn that word you have to spend time learning a hundred others. I love math, it's my favourite thing in the universe and I always have time to talk about it, so if you want, we can sit down and I'll tell you everything you need to know to understand what I'm currently working on. You can ask me questions and I will reformulate, you can ask me to go over things again and I will oblige. With your permission, I will get a piece of paper and draw shapes and schemes to help us, but it won't take five minutes. It can't take just five minutes. That is a concession you will have to make if you truly want to learn.

(Unfortunately, I don't want to disclose the title of my thesis on tunglr dot hell, because it's super specific and I don't feel like doxxing myself. But I hope this resonates with some people. I work both in symplectic geometry and Riemannian geometry, and I have to say between the two Riemannian is a little bit easier to explain, because I can just talk about distances, but symplectic geometry or Lie groups... I'm afraid I just can't explain those in a sentence because they rely on people knowing what differentiation means, and that's not knowledge you necessarily retain if you work outside a stem field. Explaining that in a few sentences would eat up the whole five minutes).

in all honesty,,, why is jype trying lore now.... they just,,,ugh. ..................i'm gonna stop you right there because i think we need to define what 'lore' means in a kpop context. when i talk about a group having 'lore', i am refering to groups that have a specific and intentional storyline/narrative arc/characters that appear consistently across all their content, regardless of what the 'concept' is. aespa has lore, ateez has lore, cix has lore. taemin does not have lore. taemin explores a thematic idea through an album and moves on to something different. taemin's only consistent character is himself, and even then it's not even consistent! he's literally labelled all of his different personas as different people with different personality types!!

also i feel like i need to stress this: 'lore' does NOT matter to the structural integrity of a work. these storylines are tacked on to the general framework of a kpop cb and have no active impact on the audience's reading of the work. you can watch any ateez mv and get an entirely complete reading of it without knowing wtf the halateez are. aespa are always just fighting some kind of techno construct. i'm willing to bet that most people don't even know cix had lore in the first place. a concept is something that is intrinsic to the construction and meaning of the work. when taemin makes a work, he takes an idea that he wants to explore and breaks it down through that work. you cannot separate those ideas from the work itself. someone using a repeated motif or thematic idea is not lore. it's just putting intentional meaning into your work.

ohhhh my god your mind i didn't even THINK of that!! that actually fits perfectly though. that one is a character study examining jamie's Need To Be Needed and how that informs his relationships. there's a very clear progression from his relationship with ben and polly, to victoria, to zoe, that i really wanted to examine, but his other relationships all fall into the same pattern: he needs to have a clearly defined Role or he becomes directionless and despondent. he's His Father's Son, he's The McLaren's Piper, he's The New Guy, he's The Protector. when they fall at culloden, or ben and polly or victoria leave, or zoe proves too independent to accept help from him, he's left floundering without anything to define himself by, and he latches onto whoever can give him a sense of purpose back.

this leads to a very interesting, though not always entirely healthy, relationship with the doctor. even this early on in his life, it's clear that the doctor should never be alone, for both his own sake and that of those around him. he needs someone as badly as jamie does, and this sort of codependency leads both of them to go to extremes in order to stay together (and to fall out in explosive fashion when one doesn't quite match up to the image in the other's mind). jamie knows him better than perhaps anyone else, certainly anyone in a very, very, long time, and he knows his place by the doctor's side is secure. he can't fathom a future where one of them is without the other. the same way he could never fathom victoria being happier somewhere other than the tardis. or how he was certain he had found himself on the right side of the war.

and then the war games come around, and the doctor is so scared of something that he thinks abandoning jamie and zoe is the kindest, or perhaps the only, choice. of course jamie fights back: how can the doctor send him home if the only place that feels like home anymore is with the doctor? whatever would have happened to him if he had been left on the war world, the truth (which he comes to accept in the glorious revolution, even if i can't spell it out in the fic itself) is, he needed to have his memories erased to not be eaten alive by the knowledge of what he's lost. and the doctor doesn't get that small mercy.

#this is way more than i meant to write haha #i love this fic so much but that's why it's been languishing cause i want it to be Perfect #but i will finish it one day #hopefully it goes without saying that this isn't me trying to paint any of these relationships as Problematic or whatever #but i know you agree that jamie has a Lot more going on under the surface than most people give him credit for #nor do i think that two and jamie are the *only* doctor/companion pair this sort of analysis is applicable to #most of them are a little bit codependent #this is just my personal favourite to look at for Obvious Reasons #dw #my posts
