most of Arthur and Bernhard's interactions during the Viking Age actually happen in Constantinople while they're serving as Varangian Guard rather than during viking raids on Britain, so Arthur and Bernhard's relationship is a lot less tumultuous than Arthur's relationships with Mathias🇩🇰 and Lukas🇳🇴.

despite this, Arthur is lowkey terrified of Bernhard at first. he gets over it when Bernhard brings him some Volga honey as a peace offering.

Arthur likes how quiet and generally predictable Bernhard is. having him around is good for Arthur's anxiety.

Bernhard is nearly a foot taller and Arthur refuses to ask him to bend down, so usually Arthur waits to kiss him until Bernhard is already bending down or sitting or however he's closer to eye level. this inadvertently results in most kisses being attacks of opportunity, if you will. Bernhard really prefers he just ask.

Arthur wrote Beowulf and based the character after Bernhard. in particular, the scene prior to the Grendel fight where Beowulf is the only character who doesn't get drunk off his ass? or Beowulf's line "The monster is not afraid of the Danes, / but he will soon learn to dread the Geats"? yeah, that's Bernhard.

from pretty much the moment they meet, Bernhard is consistently the first out of all the Nordics to pick up on when Arthur is upset or frightened and trying to hide it. this fact annoys Mathias immensely.

he'd never say it to his face, but Arthur absolutely thinks Bernhard has severe Middle Child Syndrome and is less than impressed with him a lot of the time (particularly when Bernhard is beefing with Mathias).

I couldn’t figure out just how i wanted to draw the NA brothers so i did some brainstorming and these are the end result! I decided to go with them being half indigenous— but they of course never did represent any tribe whatsoever. They were “born” shortly after their founding. They didnt get many traits by their colonizers/founders, just a select few. America is thankfully exempt from the male pattern baldness, thank you Sweden for the good genes 🙏 I just wanted to be self indulgent and make them indigenous tbh.
