Jhonen was only 22 when contacted by Nickelodeon to make a series for older children, specifically one that could recreate the success the network had with Ren and Stimpy as the network felt it was losing the “edge” it used to have

Ms. Bitters is in her 50s. She looks old because the show is supposed to be seen through the eyes of Dib/other children

ZIM, like Gaz, is a gamer but is generally terrible at them and a sore loser

ZIM was originally going to hug and kiss TAK’s hand in the “romance” montage of TAK: The Hideous New Girl but Jhonen took it out because he didn’t want viewers to think he actually liked her (sorry ZATR fans)

Jhonen had to fight with the Nickelodeon higher ups to keep Dib’s trenchcoat in after the Columbine massacre made them controversial

The PAK that Irkens have comes from Jhonen’s own habit of wearing a backpack everywhere

A venn diagram of the queer/neurodiverse content depicted in Invader Zim. I've already talked about the inherent queerness of Zim and mentioned a few times that there’s a big overlap with autism/neurodiversity but I thought this would make a handy reference. Note that “neurodiversity” isn’t just autism/ADD/ADHD but also includes mental illness, personality disorders, mood disorders, learning disabilities, and anything else that isn’t “neurotypical”.

On the queer side there is actual canon queer rep in the show and comics:

Irkens are canonically aroace and intersex.

Groyna from the comics was confirmed by Eric Trueheart to be a lesbian.

Commander Poki from the comics may be trans, as she has eyelashes normally only seen on female Irkens, but lacks the curled antenna every other female Irken is shown to possess.

Recap Kid's gender is deliberately ambiguous.

There are also many instances of queer-coding that can be seen throughout the show such as:

The homoerotic rivalry between Zim and Dib.

Red and Purple basically being Zim's two gay dads.

Zim and several other characters having campy and dramatic mannerisms.

Zim using Keef and Tak as beards.

Zim and GIR wearing make-up/cross-dressing and generally not concerning themselves with or even being aware of gender conformity.

That time Dib's personality was copied into the body of a female ship which became very distressed at being told it wasn't really a boy and changed its physical appearance to match its brain.

Other queer elements featured in the show include:

Female characters who aren't love interests/show no interest in romance.

Most characters showing a general lack of visible interest in the opposite sex or romance.

The Membranes being a non-traditional family (single dad with no mom, later acquiring two more dads in the form of Foodio and Clembrane). Irken society not being structured around family units at all.

Satirical depictions of nuclear family units (Zim’s roboparents).

Dib being open about his otherness and looking for respect and acceptance in the face of overwhelming ridicule and contempt.

Dib being pressured by his father to conform in order to please him.

Dib finding that the social benefits of conformity aren’t enough to outweigh the pain of not being his authentic self in Mopiness of Doom.

Dib’s experiences and perspectives being trivialized, dismissed and medicalized as indicators of mental illness.

Dib actually being mentally ill, but only as a result of not being accepted or supported for being different.

The eugenicist dystopia of the Irken Empire, where Zim is labeled “defective” and sentenced to death rather than treated for the mental health issues caused by the society that created him.

Daddy issues/familial rejection/non-acceptance.

Zim and Dib’s struggles with depression.

Zim and Dib’s need to prove themselves to gain validation and acceptance.

Zim and Dib being victims of bullying and in turn bullying others to feel a sense of power.

Dib’s self-loathing.

Zim’s default state being paranoia and anxiety.

Hey! Its completly fine that you dont like zadr, its really understandable and i can understand your points. But saying zim is a canonical adult isnt really fair since we cant truly take everything Jhonen says as factual canon, he also said that Zim x Gaz wouldve happened if there were to be a canon romance- implying Zim is not in fact an adult. I am totally against adult x minor ships and if Zim were no doubt shown to be an adult or adult-coded character the ship would be unacceptable, though it in reality is very vague and does not have a set canon. I dont ship ZADR either, but theres no need to put those (who are mostly young people) on the same level as bad people like proshippers when the canon itself is very vague.

Ok fine if we disregard what Jhonen says it's STILL a HUGE STRETCH not to consider Zim an adult. He's stated to be over 50 years old in Tak the Hideous New Girl.

If Irkens just age really slowly, that means Dib is going to be an adult while Zim is still a child. Seems like its fucked up either way to me.

The whole point of shunning adult/child ships is that they can be used to groom real children. If zadr can be so easily interpreted as adult/child (see: Zim stated as being over 50 years old), it could be just as easily used for grooming. In this case I really think Zim is read as adult commonly enough that it should be discouraged like a more conclusively adult/child ship.

That said I'm not sending death threats to kids about this and I never will. But it's still important to point out that its potentially dangerous and might be used by predators as a tool of manipulation. IMO that's MORE reason to discourage kids from getting into it, in like a normal and reasonable way.

Also. There's still more within the text of the show that codes Zim as an emotionally immature adult.

The show's core philosophy is less coherent overall if Zim is a child. IZ LOVES making fun of the fact that children are forced to rely on/have their world shaped by adults who can be just as ignorant and petty and stupid as other children are.

Why would the vaguely-aged but clearly-socially-independent and ignorant protagonist be an exception?

The Irkens also become much less of a scathing critique of the childish shortsightedness and stubbornness of fascist fanatacism if he's not an adult. IZ seems like a show that would go out of its way to make fun of a reliance on child soldiers if thats what the Irkens were doing.

I get it if you were into zadr as a kid but it's ridiculous not to let it go. They can be frenemies and still get into all kinds of wacky hijinks.

I cant believe i woke up to an extremely long post about why invader zim ships are problematic. Holy shit people, this is the same show where the main character likes torturing others and wants to destroy the world but i guess him dating someone while being a 100 something years older is apparently TOO FAR in comparison. Makes me wonder if any of these people would last in Deviantart side of the fandom back then. I think "proship" and "anti" are really cringe terms but GOD i dont think ive seen a more dramatic group than antis. In conclusion i dont like zadr, in other words, zim x tak or gaz is a better ship than davekat.

Zim x Gaz aka ZAGR aka Zim and Gaz Romance is better than Davekat. Sorry for being biased, but I ship Zim/Gaz back then in old Deviantart days. Anti as a term especially had changed. Like before, there used to be Anti-ZADR, Anti-SasuSaku, or Anti-Sakura. Groups to show only specific hatred towards one character or ship. And hate art was common to show their dislike and critique. But now, you don't see that anymore.

In the dvd commentary for taks episode, it was referenced that gaz may be zim's love interest, which was most likely a joke made at the time, since Jhonen Vasquez once stated that there are no official romances in the series, but the fact it was said implies that ships with zim shouldn't be seen as problematic since one was initially considered.
