Watching Dream on Netflix and there are so many Be Melodramatic easter eggs.. not to mention so many familiar faces from Be Melo.

Unsurprising because both are written and directed by Lee Byeong Heon, but I still find myself excited every time I spot a Be Melo reference.

I just finished up watching Glitch, and omg was it satisfying. I was thinking, “You know I think this is the first kdrama I’ve watched featuring aliens… there had to have been another, I’ve watched so many…. Oh wait no there was Duty After School… but that show doesn’t count.” For those who haven’t seen my thoughts on Duty After School, you can read it here. I actively try not to remember that show bc it def traumatized me, and not in a good way.

Long story short, the plot of Glitch without too many spoilers is: the main gal can see aliens (however she does her best to ignore them) and believes her ex-boyfriend has gotten abducted/kidnapped by aliens. On her journey to find answers, she runs into a group of believers who become trusted allies. Seeking even more answers, they discover a cult whose religion seems to be about aliens. Chaos ensues. Playing the female lead as Ji-Hyo is Jeon Yeo Bin, who also played the amazing Cha-Young in Vincenzo, and Lee Eun Jung in Be Melodramatic/Melo Is My Nature. Both were other fantastic shows that I suggest you watch if you haven’t.

Vincenzo of course is about a character who was adopted in Korea by a mob boss from Italy (who takes him there to raise him abroad). Vincenzo has to find the treasure that was left to him in a building in Korea, and he ends up having to deal with a ragtag group of tenants that live in said building. He also has to deal with an unexpected foe while in Korea while looking for said treasure. Chaos, hilarity, and heartbreak ensues. Be Melo Dramatic is about three female friends in their thirties trying to get their lives together. You will cry with this one. But it was so great having three female characters that I loved, who loved one another and weren’t at odds over the male lead.

Anyway if you want a funny scifi show, definitely go watch Glitch on Netflix! Multiple scenes throughout the season had me in stitches and that credit scene left me wanting more (like the one in Hotel Del Luna. Iykyk).

back at it again for my 3rd/4th/5th rewatch of be melodramatic!!! (i haven’t kept track but i’ve watched it at least once a year since 2019/2020 around the holiday season. it’s still the kdrama of my heart for far too many reasons [big and small], and here are some things i noticed about it, again lmao)

the humor is so off base and extra, which aside from the plot of one of the main characters, is one of the things that turns people off. but like, jinjoo’s humor for things is so literally on-brand for me that it’s a boon for me personally. like…i act like that irl. i am like that irl. and to see her unapologetically like this, even with the background actors and characters being concerned as to why she’s like that, is so refreshing? like she’s ridiculous, especially in this slice-of-life drama, but that levity really helps to balance this show out with its heavier plots. but also like yes, i too would carry around a guitar just to Make a Point if it could appear out of nowhere lol

everyone mentions the friendship between the three as one of the greatest friendships in kdrama land, but it honestly really is? a lot of the female friendships in kdrama land (and in other media and even in irl ngl) work out because people are in the same stage of their lives. whereas in be melodramatic, everyone is in a different state in their life AND YET they still allow their friendship to be a priority (single young professional, single but grieving/depressed, single mother) [like yes, they’re still single, but their mindsets and priorities are still very different from just a single, young professional yanno?] it’s the fact that, even with the advantages of cohabitation, that they all decide to move in together because of eunjung. do you know how many friends would just move in to be with their friend after an attempt like that? loving as close as they can? especially within the context of korean culture? the greatest theme of this drama is love, as shown in it’s opening and ending, but this honestly hammers home just how important other forms of love outside of romantic love is.

more thoughts to come as i comb through this kdrama that never fails to get to me. can’t wait for the ensemble cast to make me laugh to the point of crying and rip my heart out so i can cry again 🥲

i'm reading to room nineteen again, and its solidifying how really medicore the last 2 episodes of because this is my first life is. like the whole point of to room nineteen as a story is talking about personhood and the seperation of someones indivdiual personhood and their feelings from the front they put on for the world. so to have the climax of the story in the final episode to be about "opening room 19" makes zero sense. i still love the show a lot, heck i've seen it 3 times now, but they dropped the ball on how it ended.

i get they had to squeeze in a typical kdrama cliche somewhere, they have the random for no reason break up that just happens to have some tension, and despite the serious critiquing marriage throughout the entire run of it, it ultimately ends with the three main couples being married and subliminally going with the idea that marriage is what makes you happy.

like episode 1-14 are perfect, 15-16 are just very...not good. idk what changed, did they change writers somewhere? because its just a sudden tonal shift that makes very little sense. ji ho was someone who always did things that made sense, so to have her suddenly be stupid is weird. but i did like seeing se hee have his breakdown and finally reveal how he feels, it just doesn't make sense that they did it in the way that they did
