#justforlewks - Day 5 The final day of everyone is running on fumes. I was very proud of how I had paced myself,planned in advance, kept hydrated made healthy choices (with a few treats.) I do not give into the sadness I don’t go to the hotel the final night I give people their space. I think more then a goodbye people remember how you’ve made them feel. There is always friends from far away I wish l could watch do their thing all the time. Meeting @paulrabliauskas after writing about him several times was lovely “You were a reviewer who finally got it right what you wrote stuck with me. Cause that’s how I see my comedy.” @co_christmas is a very unique talent I have followed for about 2 years and I was so happy to get to know him better. I joked I would trade 3 Toronto comics to for him. During the day at the @sonofacritch panel I opted for my very rare map print wind breaker made popular by #kurtcobain from @kingpin_chic and my trusty black jumpsuit from @fashionnova Then for the 40th anniversary gala I opted for a #LBD with custom Victor ( the retired mascot of JFL) Purse and earrings made my beloved @skriptzz Walking down St Catherine street wearing this outfit. My little Victor purse caught the eyes of people and they yelled and wanted to take photos. In a festival that was previously teeming with Victor people were happy to see three no matter how small. It was not lost on me looking around the press section of the gala how fortunate I had been so spend so much time doing my thing at @placedesarts over that week @jimmycarr plus 3 galas the 40th being the most star studded. This was a photo I took. I couldn’t post until it was up on the @theinterrobang but hands down the highlight of my @sxsw experience was getting to be on the red carpet for the screening of the final 3 episodes of @broadcity and attend a Q and A with @ilana @abbijacobson moderated by #kentalterman On a whim I took out my Polaroid and Ilana Glazer seemed oddly charmed and struck a pose the other pushy photographers knew it was just for me Then Abbi followed with “Okay go” that seemed to snap me into the reality of the situation. It was a validation of my work up to this point. I was very pleased and greatful thank you to my photo journalism teacher Geoff Robbins. Bruce McCulloch chose quietly do the world premiere of his new stage Tales of Bravery and Stupidity At a Presbyterian church in Paris Ontario. I wrote about for @theinterrobang it and we had a great conversation. In Toronto we’ve known about the new season of The kids in the Hall since it began shooting in the summer. It gave us hope and some of us jobs. The opportunity to write this was born out of sketch comedy connections forged out of the non glamorous times, The small shows before the big breaks. Thank you @vancebanzo @lauracilevitz @edisontwins @elise_bailey_ I kept my scene in my heart during this interview. I didn’t want to write the same article I have been reading. This doesn’t feel real. The comedy world lost one of it’s great lovers. True documenters. I met Sara’s words before I ever met her. Her column Notes from a comedy Junkie was the ticket to glimpse into shows I couldn’t go to. That column was a living history of rooms and festivals moments where the biggest comedians relaxed and spoke candidly about fear and fame. That’s the thing about comedy it’s so fleeting those moments that take so much to make crackle and fade. Sara saw their magic and made them last. She was capable of that sort of writing because that’s who she was as a person someone who really respected the art of Comedy for all it’s complex nuance. She basked in the process of solidifying imperfection and examining it under-stage lights. It turning out all better then it began. She loved a show. She loved all parts of what that took she saw them appreciated them. To have a Sara Dahms article written about you it was truthful and celebratory. She did not frame or angle her stories in accordance to anyone but herself. I love how she would cover the roasts and totally changed how I came to think of them as a major comedy event. A break out moment for stand ups and writers. When I did finally meet this beautiful person it is not not a understatement she changed my life. Getting me my first writing gigs at The Interrobang. At Just for Laughs in 2018 When I saw her again in 2019 she was so proud of all that I had accomplished. I remember gushing over the gala tickets we had both gotten. She promised me to show me around Skankfest when I went. She was so gracious in the industry. Would talk comedy with anyone long enough to know if they knew their stuff or not. Introduced everyone around her without pretentiousness. Doing the red carpet at Just for Laughs was one of her true joys. Just for laughs is huge but I know the streets of Montreal will feel so empty without you this summer. I also know a part of you will always be there. I write for Interrobang. You know Sara Yes. I love putting this out quietly ever year. Allowing whoever finds it to find it. Taking notes on how they react. Munching the remnants of Christmas chocolate as the comments roll in. People always have something to say....this is the only piece of work of mine that is never up for discussion. I welcome the comparison to @goaheadsumi list I sincerely miss talking shop with him when we wound up in the same audience. Before I ever wrote I remembered when his best of included a section for the worst comedy shows of the year. I now understand why and keep an informal such list of my own. (Yet I still disagree. Stanhope whatever year it was drunk at the Danforth... was art!) The editing process was brutal this year. I had selected 10 television shows, 5 albums, 10 comics. I also submitted 10 producers because I think they especially deserved acknowledgement for constantly adapting to capacity limits or whatever Covid had on the menu at that time. Covering @justforlaughs has always been a challenging experience with amazing rewards. The pace is very demanding. I would see shows get up,write articles, plan my lewk and do it all over again. With humility I didn’t know where to start covering it this year. All the digital festival pivots prior only made me long for the real thing. This one more then any before. I used that longing and wrote about what I would see if I could go. Inspired by the most common conversation I have at the festival which is what Canadians I believe are representing the landscape of comedy and the directions they are pushing it in.
