okay yes you’re being very normal BUT. “what makes you think he was a hero?” “because he kills monsters.” “what makes you think that she was a monster?”
“not everyone who looks like a hero is a hero, and not everyone who looks like a monster is a monster”
“…and against all odds, he managed to find his way to a happy ending”

This is all the backstory we get for Moriah, and while he isn't the deepest or the best villain in the world, he is effective. I feel like he's one of those bad guys who's more interesting in hindsight, after we see what almost happened to Luffy during Sabaody and the Marineford War. Moriah isn't a roadblock like Crocodile or Doflamingo or Kaido, he's a warning, and a look at what a potential future could look like for Luffy if he were to ever fail.
I especially like this implication that Moriah's former crew was small. It's another thing that makes him a good parallel for the Straw Hat Pirates.

Something I noticed while looking for panels for an ask that I have queued up for the next day or two: this is the moment Guts' breakdown over his sword starts. When he does manage to hit Griffith as he's shielding Casca, but it doesn't work, his sword is stopped, and now he feels helpless and lost. Initally when I first read the chapter I assumed the 'what' was about Griffith protecting Casca again, but in full context of Guts' subsequent breakdown over his sword failing him and Griffith still being untouchable, it seems much more clearly a reaction to his failure to touch Griffith here.
And the funny thing is if Griffith hadn't magically stopped his sword here, Guts would've cut Casca in two along with Griffith. Based on that panel of his quivering hands, he might still be trying to, if they're quivering with effort rather than shock.
And I find it interesting that Guts' breakdown over not being able to hit Griffith with his sword even happens considering this moment exists. Not only is Casca's kidnapping not a factor we see him consider, Guts nearly killing her along with Griffith isn't a factor either. If he had successfully killed Griffith here, Casca would've died with him, and Guts is having a breakdown over failing to do that. He's not relieved that Griffith's power saved Casca's life from him here, he's not torn over his own capacity for destruction, he's in despair that his sword was stopped.
It's also a neat parallel to the Lost Children arc, the moment when Jill shields Rosine. The protector/protected roles are reversed, but either way Guts had the opportunity to kill one opponent and one innocent, and in both instances he tries to do it only to be stopped by an unforseen circumstance (Griff's invulnerability, a crossbow bolt from Jill's dad and Farnese's knights finding him).
That Guts in a rage aesthetic, sword held high, one glowing eye in a dark demonic silhouette, lots of visual similarities here.
Maybe Casca's endangerment is a coincidental detail we're not meant to examine too closely, it's hard to say with the new team stlil finding their feet. But yk, it does fit Casca's magic dream therapy sequence, where the Guts in her subconscious mind nearly kills her while fighting Griffith, and of course it fits Guts' whole blacking-everything-else-out-in-a-rage beast of darkness thing. It's a solid illustration of Guts' black-out rage, a theme so significant that it's what the story is named after.
It's a dark moment and I hope it gets some attention or at least acknowledgement in future chapters, but at the very least it's a fitting addition to this fight with Griffith, and it's potentially interesting that it hasn't even crossed Guts' mind in his despair.

yet another line from the Book One novelization that's gonna fucking haunt me
"An assassin doesn't decide right and wrong. Only life and death." Rayla parroted the mantra Runaan had so often repeated. She did not know if she was reciting the words to convince the prince that his fate was sealed, or to convince herself to seal it.

hiiiiiiiii im so mentally ill abt the swk-mk relationship from 1x09 into ROTSQ. wukong literally goes from having this “oh shit i Care about this kid” moment in 1x09 to Not Being There when mk faces off against the possessed dbk in 1x10. and then at the start of RotSQ they sit on that damn cliff again and wukong, for the first time, invites mk in, and we get to see just how lonely he really is. and mk’s about to leave, hesitates, realizes this, and Chooses to spend time with wukong. im so #normalgirl about them
(and also there’s tiny little origami versions of the original pilgrims in wukong’s little new year’s setup. and that’s just so everything to me)
GOD.
There really something about that ROTSQ scene. The way Wukong comfortably turns as MK's stammering and trying to leave. He seems so...at ease in his loneliness.
I also lose my mind that their mini 4x12 training sequence takes place at the same temple:
Sun Wukong: "I've been alive a long, long time. I've fought along side the Brotherhood and the great Companions, and now you. You may not believe it but you are all stronger than you know! Every one of you is already a hero—together you can do this, we can do this! Are ya with me!"
((*cough cough* "Just believe in yourself! Even a smidge makes all the difference." *cough *cough))
The contrast (and similarity) to their ROTSQ convo:
Sun Wukong: "I got you where I wanted you, by putting myself where you wanted me. It's called: misdirection."
MK: "Seems like a shady lesson."
Sun Wukong: "Too soon, buddy."
MK: "UGH, I'm never gonna be as good as you."
Sun Wukong: "Pst, not with that attitude!"
Their whole strategy in TEW was getting Azure where they wanted him, by putting themselves where Azure wanted their team. Really #normalgirl about it all

Opened twitter for 3 minutes and saw 4 people talking about enstars gay marriage (Not sure why? Maybe I missed a memo) and also about wataei wedding. In honour of this sentiment I want to remind everyone of the part in ring.a.bell where midori is like “No way I’m wearing a bride dress, I’m too tall so it wouldn’t look cute on me at all...” and leo is immediately like “Really? But I bet Wataru could pull it off perfectly and look cute” like. do with that what you will. perhaps even draw fanart of it you know I don’t know do whatever.
