like. arguably, taigen would be a better romantic partner (per the ideals of his time and culture of course), or at least he would be on paper. cuz i mean as a husband, as he is now, i think he'd be awful. but i'm talking about if you and him were dating or courting or just seeing each other romantically, he would be good to you. like we saw how he behaved with akemi and he was nothing but sweet and gentle. the very reason akemi wanted to marry him so bad was because she KNOWS without a doubt that he respects women and would treat her well. "oh but he cheated on her with the prostitutes while celebrating his engagement!" yeah but per the norms of the time and place, it was not considered cheating and akemi (as well as any wife or romantic partner of that period) would not have minded or even cared.

and yes taigen IS an asshole and he IS obnoxious but come on. so is mizu, if she is allowed to act like herself around you. mizu will tease you and mock you and challenge you and even poke at your insecurities (see:her goading mikio on even though he clearly did not view her teasing as light-hearted banter and took it all very personally). she would tell you to your face if she thinks you're being annoying (see:mizu rolling her eyes and telling akemi to straight up just "shut up" when she'd believed mizu had killed taigen).

mizu is not merely a hot and talented badass with a sword and the insane hyperfocus on her desire for revenge which literally drives her to withstand like, extreme amounts of damage and survive it. mizu is also flawed and the show does a good job at showcasing this, and showing us that she's not merely a victim but also a multilayered person. we see throughout that mizu is blunt and sarcastic and prideful.

oh what's that? oh right, very similar to taigen, who is also hot and talented with a sword and with insane hyperfocus on his desire to duel mizu and regain his honour. taigen who is also flawed (though, arguably, more so) as he is blunt and sarcastic and prideful.

the only thing that sets mizu and taigen apart is the fact that taigen is a man and is not mixed race, which thus affects their positions in society and how people perceive them. these are external factors. taigen being a boy who is not blue-eyed allowed him to easily mingle with the other kids in the village, all of whom were similarly fed the same prejudiced values which led them to gang up against mizu and bully her.

but take all that away. strip them down to the bare essentials. suddenly it's like they are the same person copy and pasted.

and that's what makes them even more interesting. yes absolutely they would be toxic. whatever souls are made of, mizu's and taigen's are the same (derogatory). and we literally see them fight all the time!!!! but the thing is they are both deranged when it comes to this.

do you get me. they both literally get turned on by sparring. mizu's whole spar with mikio was her way of flirting. just look at how she smirked at him and said "unsheathe it" like it's clear that this is an innuendo of not just unsheathing his weapon but also what's in his pants. then during the chopsticks fight with taigen in the snow, despite mizu literally being injured and taigen trying to attack her, mizu gets attracted to him. meanwhile taigen got a boner after wrestling with her in the forge.

taigen goes around saying he wants to kill mizu to regain his honour but he still literally risks life and limb for her constantly. mizu gives ringo stomach ulcers by going around flinging herself into near-death situations 24/7. she ups and leaves her beloved swordfather with barely a goodbye twice to pursue her batshit far-fetched quest for revenge (against people she doesn't even KNOW btw because she literally starts off with practically No Leads and not even knowing the NAMES of the white men who are her maybe-fathers).

these bitches are crazy and you know what good for them. that shit needs to be contained and quarantined though and that's why in that sense they would be good together.

i want to put them both in a jar and shake it very hard and see what happens. personally i think they will argue and insult each other while working perfectly in sync with each other to break out of the jar and then proceed to kill me and make out sloppy style over my dead body while they're both covered in blood.

Are we meant to interpret the staircase scene as being consensual? Because, not gonna lie, the choking and the way Coriolanus basically forced the hate sex did give me a bit of pause. Lucy Gray did reciprocate though, and I do believe if she'd told him to stop, he would've. And the next day, she seemed comforted and reassured by his presence when they faced the president together, which said a lot to me

to be fair, from the moment he'd brought her back to the capitol, was anything that happened between them ever truly consensual?

my take for this verse is that lucy gray is in a constant state of conflict with herself - on a rational level she knows she shouldn't want him, not after everything he's done & what he continues to do. time and time again she keeps reminding herself of it, trying to talk some sense into herself. but there is also the physical level - she desires him, physically, yes, but there's also something so deeply rooted in their past together, in the memories of their time together before everything went to hell - that despite the rational logic of HE'S A BAD MAN I SHOULD HATE HIM, on a subconscious level she is also drawn to him for support & comfort, and in times of trouble it is him she turns to, him she trusts. it defies logic. it defies reason. i guess it's a peculiar kind of emotion that we do not dare name at this point.

regarding the staircase scene - i want to underscore that these two are fucked in the head when it comes to each other. given what they've been through together, what they've done to each other - combined with the months they've now spent living together as a caricature of a family - this relationship has grown twisted and so, so, toxic. they want each other badly, but the bad blood and the constant conflict piling up makes it impossible for them to form even a resemblance of a healthy relationship. they cannot deal with it, and it's just scorched ground between them, constantly.

and lucy gray is not crystal pure in this. she's feral too, and doesn't mind drawing blood, and as much as she curses and blames him, in certain ways she's becoming a fitting match for him.

so they both chose an extremely violent, unhealthy way to deal with their emotions that night. i'm not putting a label on it. they're both fucked up, and the dove has been terminally ill for a while now. they're just sickos your honour

so i will fully admit that cmi inspired this and then my brain just ran with it. i grew up in a house where my parents had (and still have) just a very toxic, unhealthy marriage, and i developed a lot of childhood trauma around that. ironically, it turned me into a hopeless romantic, and i very much clung to love stories in books and movies as a means of proving to myself that "love" didn't have to look like that, and now my love of love stories is, i feel, fundamental to who i am as a person.

I agree with your meta on Katara and Azula and I was wondering what you think about people who use them to parallel Zuko and Sokka? I've seen the argument that they're both older brothers who feel inferior to their prodigy younger sisters, but I never felt that Sokka thought he was inferior to Katara. Thoughts?

i've seen this "parallel" a lot in general atla fandom spaces and it really annoys me because it's a classic example of a purely fanon interpretation that then gets touted as canon.

you're absolutely right to say that there's no proof that sokka felt inferior to katara. i think this interpretation comes from the sokka's master episode, where sokka expresses that he feels useless compared to the rest of the group. but this inferiority isn't about katara at all, it's about the gaang as a whole and sokka's position in it as a nonbender surrounded by the most powerful benders in the world. that episode has absolutely nothing to do with his relationship with katara; it is about learning who he is and what he has to contribute to the world.

even if sokka expressed feelings of inferiority to katara in this single episode, it is nowhere near the same as a lifetime of both feeling and being told by a trusted authority figure (your father, no less) that your sister is better than you. zuko and azula have been taught to compete from the time they were children, and zuko has grown up internalizing the idea that azula is stronger, smarter, better than him in every way to the extent that it still shapes their relationship and his view of himself in his teens.

in comparison, if we look at sokka and katara's childhood relationship, there's absolutely no credence to even the fanon interpretation that sokka felt inferior to katara. when the show begins, katara is a waterbending novice who can barely bend a ball of water and her most powerful feats of bending are fueled entirely by raw emotion (usually anger... i wonder who that reminds me of) rather than practised skill or discipline. sokka starts off as a serious misogynist who is dismissive and condescending towards katara's "magic". what reason would sokka have to feel inferior to katara? he's already of the mindset that women are "less than", he's the oldest man in the village, and is reasonably proficient with his own weapon ‐ if anything, there's more evidence for sokka feeling superior to katara, not inferior.

i'll give you that this could have changed from book 2 onwards when katara becomes a waterbending master and sokka gets the sexism kicked out of him, but again, there's absolutely no indication from sokka himself in canon that he feels this way. when sokka does talk about/to katara, it only confirms two things: 1) that he will always protect and have his sister's back and 2) that he sees her as a mother figure ‐ neither of which are applicable to the zuko and azula sibling relationship in the slightest.

zuko sees azula first as competition, then as a threat, and eventually as someone to be pitied. their relationship ends in tragedy, torn apart by the abuse of their childhood. meanwhile, sokka and katara end on equal footing as leaders and warriors, with a healthy bond based on mutual love, trust and respect. the entire point of foiling these two bonds is to show that sokka and katara are not zuko and azula. they don't need to perfectly 1v1 their respective counterparts, or have identical dynamics, to highlight how toxic zuko and azula's relationship is.

zuko and sokka do have many great parallels (finding their honour, trying to live up to an ideal of their fathers, children who had to become soldiers too soon) but "older brothers who felt inferior to prodigy younger sisters!" is just not one of them.

Kim Do-Hyun (’97) was a friend Sujin made while she was still attending university. They met through mutual friends while out drinking (before she was scouted), but back then, they both had zero feelings for each other (Sujin was happily single, and Do-Hyun already had a girlfriend) and they weren't very close friends either.

However, they remained in contact until Sujin dropped out in 2018 to focus on her upcoming debut, and Do-Hyun joined the military that same year. He had no idea where she disappeared to because he, along with most of her other uni friends, never knew she was a trainee. Eventually, a little while after her debut, he started to see her face on social media. He's not into Kpop at all, but once he noticed Sujin, he began watching NOVELLA's performances out of curiosity.

They finally reunited in 2020 (pre-lockdown) during a military dischargement party with some of their mutual friends. After their reunion, they became a lot closer, and Do-Hyun even started developing a little crush. This time around, Sujin was dating someone else (an idol), but they quickly broke up due to covid. It definitely took Sujin a lot longer to fall for Do-Hyun after breaking up with her boyfriend. Dating as an idol, especially with a non-celeb, is extremely hard, and she didn't want to ruin the friendship they had.

In September 2021, when covid restrictions 'started lifting' and idol life was beginning to go back to ‘normal’, Do-Hyun just decided to bite the bullet and ask her out. (The exact scenario was something like; Sujin said she would probably be going on tour in January, and Do-Hyun couldn't wait any longer to ask her out). Sujin initially protested, saying that it wouldn't work and yada yada yada, but it just went in one ear and out the other. They have now been dating for over two years and have even met eachothers families.

♡ Kim Haeun + ? (2022 - 2022)

Haeun has had a couple of boyfriends, but none of them were really memorable. Her most recent boyfriend was also an idol, as are most of her exes, and they had a very quiet relationship that eventually ended due to conflicting schedules and dying feelings.

The relationship lasted, maybe 9 months or so? And I think after this, Haeun decided that dating is kind of a waste of time for her since she feels like it won't lead to anything, at least not for the next 5 years.

Since her breakup, she has yet to engage in anything 'serious ' or 'exclusive '.

♡ Choi Aecha + ? (2020 - 2023)

OK, so... Aecha's love life is kinda messy.

She has/has had some major co-dependency issues which attracted some questionable men.

The current man in question was OK at first. They originally broke up mid covid because they never got to see each other, but afterwards, they began a weird 'on and off' situation. Between 2021-2022, they had broken up at least 5 times, and it was mostly because our 'king' got caught cheating on her with multiple different girls.

But Aecha, being stupidly gullible and emotionally dependent, would take him back. every. time.

The man would go from 'I'm so sorry baby I didn't mean to, I was just drunk and lonely when you were out of town', to, 'well maybe I wouldn't be seeing other girls if you payed more attention to me', to, 'do you even still love me?! In fact, I should be breaking up with you!'

In early 2023, after a particularly rough fight, members Haeun, Sujin, and Dambi staged an intervention where they finally convinced Aecha to break it off for good. Since then, she has not been in contact with her ex at all, and is taking an overall break from dating.

♡ Yoon Eunjeong + Ahn Min-Seok (2023 - present)

Ahn Min-Seok (’96 ) is a famous Korean actor (oc) who mainly stars in romance Kdramas. Eun-Jeong is friends with a lot of actors, so they met for the first time during a mutual friends’ birthday party (April). They've only been dating for like a month or two (Oct), but started ‘talking’ back in April.

♡ Kim Dambi + Bae Ji-Woo (2019 - 2020)

(I'm taking this with more of a meaning of dominant and submissive role, respectively) I don't have particular headcanons regarding Loid's sexual preferences (other than him being a-spec), though I believe that he's done both as part of his missions, carefully separating his feelings from the activity so that either role wouldn't matter to him.

So I'm going to talk about Killian instead. And I'm full on the "submissive Killian Jones" train. My argument is that he has trauma and issues over loss of control due to growing up in servitude, and allowing his significant other (Emma, or whoever else) to wield some control over him and their sexual relationship helps him come to terms with his fear. To give up control and not only be treated well by his "master", but to also be given care and support and gratification back (and through the whole thing that what happens is the submissive's choice, so he would choose how things would go but would allow his SO to handle things). I don't know if that's healthy, but the opposite (him becoming dominant to deal with his trauma) could be unhealthy and toxic as fuck because he might see it as a way of "avenging" his past self who had no control and no agency. So yeah, for me, I could never see him wielding control in a sexual relationship like that, and giving up control is what would make him feel more free and relaxed.

As a rule I hate keeping screenshots because a) no reason to remember stupid shit people have said just to make myself angry, b) people can change and holding them on to ideas for fictional stories they had from years ago is unfair and c) I've seen people get endlessly harassed over silly tumblr fandom takes, so.

But that doesn't mean I don't REMEMBER horrible takes. Ethan Winters from Resident Evil being a bigot for some reason. Killian Jones from OUAT only wanting to "get in Emma's pants" (and the painful part about that was HOW MANY PEOPLE just outright believed it, like, tell me you haven't watched his scenes without telling me you haven't watched his scenes). Damian Desmond from SxF "never having been a bully".

Ironically, the worst take I've seen about fictional characters in EVER was on twitter, but I'm not gonna go there cause we know what a cesspit that site is and why the people who make such horrible takes do not survive on tumblr.

But yeah I think the absolute most derailed, most biased take and biggest proof of "I haven't watched the original material" is people saying Heisenberg from Resident Evil wanted to help Ethan. Heisenberg, the guy who forced Ethan to fight his way through a stronghold full of lycans hell-bent on killing him, and then fight through Urias too, apparently wanted to help Ethan and also "cared" for Rose. Because throwing Ethan into another death trap after Ethan refused to let him use Rose however he wanted to is how he showed his compassion!

And I'm not talking about people who recognize the difference between canon and fanon. I'm talking people who legit think Heisenberg would be a better romantic partner for Ethan than Mia. They're like "I can excuse using people as objects and leading them into death traps and ignoring their wish to protect their child but I draw the line at lying to your spouse about being a bioterrorist".

And there are people who legit believe that! There are people who are down to fight for Heisenberg's honour and it's the biggest proof that they completely skip the Stronghold part of the game (and most of the factory, I guess, aside from the moments Heisenberg has his monologues through the megaphones). Because I cannot believe watching an entire playthrough or playing through the entire game, with a moderate amount of reading/watching comprehension skills and reach the conclusion that Heisenberg was only "helping" Ethan and that Ethan was wrong to refuse him and kill him. Again, fanon content is different and I respect whatever people want to create. But when it comes to canon interpretations, I do believe that it's the worst, least informed and most biased take I've seen in my years in fandoms.

I just had an idea for lancexdiantha. I don’t know if it’s still on your radar, but what if Diantha dated Lysandre, and he treated her horribly. She blames herself for falling for such a terrible person.

So, when she starts falling for another person, who looks and reminds her so much like Lysandre she stops and has to re-evaluate her decisions. She tries so hard to not fall for him, but in the end she does.

But, it gets better. When Cynthia forces Diantha to tell Lance her feelings and they start dating for a while, Diantha gets the relationship she wants and deserves.

Like, Lysandre manipulates and tries to crack Diantha down, but Lance is gentle and gives Diantha her space. He encourages her and gives her the world. You can’t tell me Lance just takes a whole ass week off just because Diantha’s on her period and gives her all her favorite food, her favorite pads/her product of choice, and a coffee. Heck, he even gives her a little heating pad wrapped in his cape because he came to her aid so quickly he couldn’t even get a blanket (he also didn’t want said pad to burn her like Lysandre would often do to her with his pyroar).

I am making myself cry with all this fluff. I guess this is what I get for reading two metric tons of just fluff fics for two weeks.

Like. I really dig the whole "Uhhh so we had to transplant the baby. Kira now has the baby" b plot, but honestly it feels (to me at least) like it happened in a different episode, I'm going nuts about the a plot rn

Btw, content warning for brief discussion of fictional suicidal ideation. I won't go in detail but if thinking about a fictional character considering killing himself is not good for you, please don't read this post. Now, with that:

Just. The strange horror that comes from combining money and both health care and mortuary services. I think about that as it happens irl all the time, so I really like digging into this episode through that lens. I honestly generally like the vacuum dessication process for dealing with remains (and the idea of keeping a person's remains with you, not just hidden in an urn, but proudly displayed in a clear disc, small enough that you can keep them with you if you wish or leave them on a shelf or something). But there is such a weirdly surreal thing there, to me, about Quark (assuming he will be dead very soon) literally auctioning off parts of himself. Not only is he stressed and just in a bad place because he thinks he's about to fucking die, he also has to manage his mortuary situation (which. Since the tradition he follows involves auctioning parts of the remains, as opposed to being left in a place as a burial or spread ashes or sky burial or something, it really can't be planned in advance. Unless you auction off your future remains well before death, I suppose. In any case it's harder to do that stuff ahead of time). THEN the fact that he doesn't even HAVE Dorek syndrome, and the revelation that Brunt has bought the rights to Quark's remains (and apparently in some beta canon he bribed Dr. Orpax to lie and say Quark had Dorek syndrome, which. I generally don't pay heed to beta canon but fuck, dude. That makes so much sense. Not only because that makes Brunt's knowledge of the situation even more believable, but also because there it is again, that intertwining of medicine and money and how it never comes to any good except to those in power, namely Brunt. Also Dr. Orpax to some degree, in that he has power over Quark as a wealthy doctor, but also Brunt has power over Dr. Orpax bc he's fucking Brunt, FCA. How do you refuse a bribe from a determined FCA liquidator without putting your own life on the line? So I don't and do blame Dr. Orpax for this, but mostly this is Brunt being a twisted shithead).

AND THEN you have the relationship specifically between Quark and Brunt! The way they're both so toxic to each other yet so invested. It's genuinely fascinating. The extreme power imbalance, too; Brunt is a man who has a LOT of power. He has financial power in his wealth and as an agent of financial law, he has political power, he has physical power because he can afford Nausicaan bodyguards. Quark is, in comparison, just like, some guy. I think Brunt's role in this episode can also be read as somewhat of a metaphor for Ferenginar and the society Quark is trying hard to succeed in. It's a system that's built to fail for basically everyone, something Ishka, Rom, and Nog have all realised in their own ways, causing them to break from various traditions and find fulfilment in other ways of life (social reform, living in Bajoran/Federation society, and joining Starfleet, respectively). Quark, however, is determined to make this work (which, ultimately, is why DS9 feels a bit like a tragedy for his character), but Brunt, and the society that acts through him, literally have him in a stranglehold (well, literally as in a dream, but y'know), and no matter what Quark does, he loses. If he honours his contract and kills himself, he loses, because. Well, because he's forced to commit suicide. But if he does what he ended up doing, not honouring the contract, he loses again, because he loses his standing in his society, utterly, along with a lot of his livelihood and personal possessions (literally including the shirt off his back). He manages to keep going because of the support of friends and family outside the system, but. Fuck dude, that's still so rough

And the fact that Quark feels so trapped by convention and honour and contract that he really, actually considers killing himself, too. And the ways he ponders it, testing Garak's methods on holograms. I mean, fuck! He watches himself die over and over and over again! I'm sure too that as he watched, with each hypothetical death he began to feel less and less sure of what he was doing, if the contract was right, if this was all worth his life...then his dream. Wow dude. And the way he stands up to Brunt the next day, knowing that no matter what he does, he is about to lose so much.

In short "Body Parts" is a wonderfully surreal homoerotic horror about the evils of capitalism, particularly in medicine and mortuary services, AND it's somehow also very funny (seriously how did they pull that off??? Like I'm out here being like "This is horror" but also laughing my ass off bc. "I GET TO SUE DR. ORPAX FOR MALPRACTICE!!! and I'm gonna live!" and "When you see how much your body is worth, you're gonna wish you died years ago" and "*snap* I'm dead!" and "I'd rather be naked" this episode is so weirdly funny considering how depressed it makes me get about money and such) AND it has a b plot involving a baby transplant

#AND that's not even digging into that bit where I thought Quark was propositioning Brunt to try and get out of killing himself #like when you consider rule 113 there's probably a LOT of neat stuff to dig into with power dynamics and transactional sex and stuff #but I digress.
