I think what chronically upsets me about TotK is that. So much of it could have been so good with so little change.

I am into Zelda as a sacrificial, wondrous and silenced creature who must literally carry the blade of the hero as a wound inside her forehead and silently wait to be humanized again --and the injustice of a kingdom built on such a premice doomed to repeat itself, especially if the kingdom was founded on such dubious grounds to begin with. I am into Ganondorf forcing the present to reckon with the past through the most violent clash, forsaking everything that made him a person while sinking down into petty vindictiveness until no connection and no humanity remains, even though independance was what he was trying to protect in the first place. I am into Link as somebody trying to hold onto his most important connection to the world he once knew being used to force him into a conflict that has ultimately nothing to do with him (sure that's SS again but, it could have been explored even further). I am into Rauru as this self-important, self-made king who used his own association to godhood to live out a power fantasy that refuses to ever be acknowledge as such, maybe compounded by the fact he is one of the last of his species and feel, himself, the crushing weight of their fading heritage?

I don't know, the Tears of the Kingdom or something????

But, it all tragically depends on one crucial thing, which is to allow hylians to be wrong sometimes.

And it's wild to me how all of this incredible potential to comment on the series' history and the characters' role in it is just. Flattened into nothing, because Good must be Good and Evil must be Evil, and Hyrule must be righteous at literally every cost --even if it means nervously rewriting their own history through convoluted logic that rejects conflict and depth and vulnerability at every turn.

i'm sure you know this already but:

COTL ISN’T DELETING THEIR GAME.

1) in terms profit they'd pretty much shoot themselves in the foot with that decision, and as protest it's not very effective to make unity listen.

2) if they were, there would've been a much bigger announcement than a twitter tweet.

3) they confirmed they're not in both the discord and the twitter. after the deletion tweet went viral. which...ok.

4) it's probably a scare tactic to take advantage of the unity news to get more people to buy their game.

5) it probably worked.

so many people are focused on the unity issue that i don't think it's often talked about how much of a shitty pr stunt that was by the social media manager. people are fearmongering, sure, but the initial seeds were planted by that twitter post that really should've gone through some extra foresight.

hope they enjoy their extra revenue.

astarion stans who refuse to try befriending or even romancing anyone else are the most annoying mfs. "I only romance astarion I just can't relate to the other stories" really? you can't relate to gales deep self loathing? his deep love and loyalty for those he cares about? you can't relate to wylls kind heart and desire to always do good, even if it means he's miserable? can't relate to shadowheart blindly following a god, only to learn the truth and reinvent herself? you can't relate to lae'zel or karlach who were lied to and used as weapons their whole lives, but continue to push on even when they're scared? you can't relate to the overarching theme of authority vs autonomy???

it's not difficult, it's just people refusing to appreciate and explore the game to its fullest bc their manipulative sexy vampire is all they need(something astarion actually loathes being seen as btw). but ok, you can be boring and do whatever you want, but don't lie and say the other stories are bad, because they're not. it's simply a lack of media literacy and critical thinking. because to you, if a character doesn't tell you point blank that they're aware of their situation, it's bad writing. missing the entire point that victims don't always realize the situation they're in. keep in mind astarion and karlach are the only ones who got away from their abusers, which is why they tell you clearly and confidently about what happened to them, fully aware that it was abuse. whereas the others give only their tunnel visioned perspective and speak highly of their deity(not caring about themselves, wish to appease them for something in return).

don't get me wrong (seriously, if I see one person misunderstand me I'm going to lose it) astarion is a good character, but people who only like him need to stop acting like he's the only complex and well written one. stop crying when people with brains call you out for being weird about his ascended ending. the game isn't about him. at least try and show some respect to those who worked hard on the game. make an oc and try new things, i promise the fictional vampire won't care if you don't romance him one run. have a drink with shadowheart, dance with wyll, go to a restaurant w karlach, maybe then you'll calm down.

It isn’t until 2017 that Sebastian has a problem with Michael flirting with Lewis.

Michael isn’t at the track for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. He doesn’t go to many of the races anymore. He hears about it from Niki.

Sebastian calls him after he has seen the data. He’s gone all quiet, voice distorted like he is pressing the phone against his mouth.

It takes Michael a minute to understand what is going on.

“So you’re saying Lewis has forgiven you?”

An inhale. “Yes.”

“Okay. So. Why are you still upset?”

A harsh exhale. “Because he forgave me!”

“Right.”

And then: "I still don't get it."

Another exhale, breath whooshing. The sound comes out all crackly. It is the most defeated Sebastian has ever sounded. "He just — you had to see him. His face. I hurt him when I said those things. That he brake-tested. To him, it was worse I said this, I think. Worse than hitting into him."

Michael had dismissed Lewis when he first properly met him. He had noticed how fast he was, how quick on the corners and the way he managed his tires, and thought: huh. He'd then had a conversation with him, a handful of years later, and well — Michael has never really enjoyed looking in the mirror now has he? That gets boring fast.

But he's not — like Michael that is. Not completely. Not overwhelmingly. Just enough of himself that he's interesting.

Lewis doesn't like being accused of cheating. He's not the cleanest of drivers by far, even if he has tightened up his act in recent years. Michael doesn't have a line — or so he's been told. He never really thought about it before they shoved a microphone in his face and asked him to justify racing that everyone could be doing if they wanted to.

Michael exists on the extremes, threading the edges of things.

Lewis does not. Lewis cannot.

Michael isn't sure exactly what that line is - where the things he does starts and where the things he does not do ends - but he knows that inside Lewis there is a carefully bound book that has been read over and over, and written on its cover in Lewis's blocky handwriting is: RULES.

Being accused of cheating would be one terrible thing to Lewis. Being accused of cheating by Sebastian would be quite another.

From the sounds of it, Sebastian is starting to realise that Lewis considers him his Mika.

"I hurt him," Sebastian says, sounding very small. "I've never done that before. I didn't know I could."

"Yeah," Michael says, because he has nothing left to say but Sebastian is leaving space for him to speak. "You can. You're one of the few who can."

"And then he just forgave me! Like that! I said sorry and I said I was wrong and I said — other things — and he looked at me with The Face." Sebastian curses. "The only thing he says — listen to me now, Michael — the only thing — the one thing, he says is: are you going to tell everyone this?"

Michael hums. He kicks off his runners and stretches out his toes.

"And I say: yes, of course. I was waiting to talk to you. But I will. I was going to. And he just — ugh! He just smiles at me and -"

"Forgives you?"

"This is not funny."

Michael rolls his eyes, grinning. "Okay."

"It's not! He — fuck's sake. What am I supposed to do with this? That's all it took. All. Nothing at all. I want to break something. What do I do?"

Michael shrugs even though Sebastian cannot see him. "You love him. This is what Mika told me."

Sebastian is very quiet for a long moment. Michael would think he hung up on him if not for the sound of his breathing.

"Mika," he says eventually, voice strange. "Right. I forgot about your Thing with Lewis."

Michael doesn't say anything.

"You have to be careful with him, Michael. You have to. Promise me. This matters."

Michael rolls his eyes again. He thinks about telling Sebastian that a person only has enough room in their body for one Mika and Michael isn't Lewis's, and Lewis isn't Michael's, so it is okay. Michael can only do so much damage. He thinks about telling him that he made Lewis laugh — actually full belly, bent over double laugh — and Lewis's hand was warm and heavy on his shoulder. He snorted at the end, hiccuping, and it was a ridiculous sound for a person to make. Michael can't wait to hear it again. He thinks about telling him that sometimes he is the fifth, sixth — tenth — person that Lewis notices when he walks into a crowded room. Michael dreads the day that he isn't seen at all.

"I know," he goes with instead.

"Promise me." Sebastian sounds almost angry.

Michael looks at the ceiling. You're so young, he thinks.

"Promise," he says.
