I feel like if you think about it, Pearl could've rebelled from the rebellion itself. She could have said "I'm a free Gem now, I bow to no one! I'm leaving to explore the world/galaxy, goodbye!"

(and that would have given Pink/Rose seventeen more layers of trauma, but we're not going to get into that right now-)

But she didn't. She chose to remain by the side of her Diamond.

And I just gotta wonder, at one point did she stop staying out of her role as a servant and start staying out of love? When did the path of one perspective end and the other begin? Were they ever truly separate in the first place? It's clear that Pearl was in love with Rose for like, ever, but when did she decide that she was officially choosing her own love for Rose over her programmed loyalty to her? Did she ever fully separate the two feelings?

Carol & The End of the World might have the most generous take on an apocalypse I've ever seen.

The Earth is doomed. Everyone is going to fucking DIE. And they all know it.

You'd expect chaos, right? People running around the streets in panic. Fires everywhere. Indiscriminate murder. The collapse of humanity as we know it.

AND YET. Despite having every opportunity to kill, destroy, violate, and pillage without consequence...most people don't.

Oh sure, they steal and don't follow road laws anymore. But they help people out. They go out of their way to be polite. They celebrate holidays, follow the rules of the beach. Hell, there was a whole-ass organized cruise made for this catastrophe.

This show wants you to believe that people are inherently altruistic and you know what?

...I believe it.

Man. It's the way Day gasps, "Jasmine?" like he didn't know he was starving. He's forgotten how much of the world he's shut out, and this tiny flower moves him just that much.

The way he immediately forgets about returning to his room so he can marvel at a simple beauty like he hasn't in ages. This man's spirit has been wilted for a whole year, and it's about time that it got brought back to life.

I can't be 100% sure, but by judging the appearance of the bud Mhok holds up to Day's nose, this particular species is called Sambac jasmine, or Arabian jasmine. They are used for perfumes and teas all over the world, as well as in garlands for numerous rituals in Buddhism and Hinduism. They're particularly known for their strong fragrance and being evergreen, blooming during the nighttime and closing in the morning. Open flowers generally aren't harvested because most are needed to extract oils and they may lose their fragrance too soon. In Thailand especially, the names of these flowers, mali la, are referenced in central folk songs that have since become popular and adapted as sports songs.

It's just so fitting that this is the flower that allows Mhok and the viewers to see Day really light up about the world he thought he'd left behind for good. He's closed up, but in this case it means he's ripe for the harvest and is about to go through a transformation process.

I just wanted to talk a bit more about the sea parallel because oh god i love it so so much. I just love all the directorial choices they made that went into these scenes.

so first we have this scene

and it hurts so much.

in those few minutes we see myungha's actual life, we see why he made this decision but remembering the scene in episode 4 where he talks with yeonwoo about whether they like the mountains or the sea better, and knowing that myungha is a sea person, that he likes the sea more than mountains, it hurts to see this because he chose his last moments to be somewhere he likes. but even then, the last memories he has of a location he likes so much becomes entangled with feelings of loneliness, pain and regret. and I feel like the shot reflects this exact state of mind; blue, alone and surrounded by darkness. considering that even the aspect ratio changes later, I want to say that this scene also visualizes that he is genuinely just stuck, therefore pointing out again the reason for the decision he took.

and then we get this.

everything is different.

he is no longer alone. there is no more darkness. it's no longer monotone and dull. it's colourful and full of life. the aspect ratio isn't restricted anymore. it feels free and peaceful. the place where he once chose to end his life becomes a source of life or at least proof that he now has a reason to live.

I know this is technically his afterlife but I am glad that at least now he has a life he wants to live and people he loves and who love him and that he is no longer alone.

Simon and Betty’s ending is actually so important to me. no they did not get a happily ever after and that is okay because they loved each other so fiercely and so humanly. Full of flaws and mistakes but most importantly love and dedication. It ending did not take away from what they had and realizing how they had hurt each other didn’t take away from what they had but made it better because they finally were able to see each other, really see each other and accept what happened and begin to move on. Like it’s so. it’s so human.

Adventure Time understands what it is to be human stumbling along with no real heads up or guidance in life. Loving and hurting and trying again. Full of sorrow and beauty and sudden endings with no closure but also finding acceptance in that. Learning to love yourself and life you’ve been given. And learning that everything is special and important because it happened and you lived it.
