New video just arrived via snail(fish) mail for you! 🐌📬
Salmon snailfish are deeply charming with their glossy salmon-colored bodies and their tiny PacMan mouths. Those wiggly fins on their chinny-chin-chins are used to taste the seafloor so that they can hunt for crunchy crustaceans like shrimps, amphipods, and crabs. The little mouth, the frilly fins—what’s not to love about the salmon snailfish?

There should be more meta on elf children in Mandos
Because it is a fascinating topic
Dying as a child would be very traumatic so it’s not like they’ll be able to reembody even Namo and his Maiar wanted to help
But staying in Mandos would be traumatic as well.
(Getting surrounded by traumatized adult elves definitely would not help)
And it’s not like baby elves would grow in Mandos so there’s the part that their mind started to not match the body they remembered
But also, what type of thing can one experience in Mandos? That’s not a natural environment for raising children.
(I suspect sometimes when elf children died at least one of their parents would give up their life to be able to take care of their children in Mandos)
(It probably was viewed as one of the most extreme crime to kill a child.)
(I suspect Celegorm’s followers either fled or killed themselves or got executed by Maedhros. If they fled Maedhros likely would track them down to finish them to make an example or something.)
(I fully support Idril & Tuor beating Maeglin up and tossing him down the wall)
----------
Look
Give me Maiar and dead elves in Mandos being absolutely distressed with the children pouring into the Halls in the end of the first age
Setting up child care, encouraging in-Hall adoption
Discussions about the possibility of making temporary bodies for the children to go out to for socializing trips
Building playground in Mandos, inviting Orome’s hunters in to play dogs
Setting up a little classroom and using tapestries to create immersive learning experiences (definitely some weird lessens there, there was a former Yavanna’s Maia still very attached to their ammonites)
Field trips to Dwarven Halls
----------
Most of the children spent more time in the Halls than they were ever alive and a lot of them did not remember their past life because TRAUMA and sometimes they were just too young
And they only remembered being dead and they did not know how was it to be alive they were getting used to the Halls and thought the Halls were their home
(There was that one time a Maia snapped and broke into someone’s Hall to yell at them LOOK AT WHAT YOU DID THOSE CHILDREN DIED BECAUSE OF YOU AND I DON’T KNOW IF THEY WILL EVER BE ABLE TO LEAVE THE HALLS)
(They had to set up patrols at those kinslayers and a few others’ doors because that’s REALLY bad for healing)
----------
When a child left the Halls the Maiar of Mandos took them to see their favorite tapestries (the dinosaurs ones were popular) and they held party for them and sang to them “be happy and healthy and never come back again (we will visit you instead)”
(Like in those videos that doctors and nurses celebrating a child with serious illness being cured and leaving hospital)
----------
And the children that left the Halls were always a little bit weird and unnerving but it was okay
(First of all they got too much unnecessary knowledges about these dead giant sea snails)
(“Those are not snails they are called *^$@T and $^&#*^ and *&^*%$”)
(Valarin: A LOT of names for different species of animal)

Ain't Nothing a little Emerald Dust won't cure! (Black Noir x Genderneutral!Reader)
Black Noir finds himself lost in thoughts and cannot fall asleep. You, as Emerald Dust, a supe that can make people fall asleep with fairy-like dust, helps him out.
****
Black Noir: (Fidjetting on his tatami.)
Y/N: (Sitting next to him.) Earving, you're okay?
Black Noir: (He writes something on his notebook.) I CAN'T STOP WORRYING ABOUT YOU
Y/N: Oh, dear. Why?
Black Noir: YOU ARE NOT AS STRONG AS THE OTHERS
Y/N: I know. But you taught me so well in fighting skills. And without me, the Seven would kill more. Seriously, what is it with Maeve and killing? A little dust of mine would usually do the trick. Also, I am slightly rising in points with the public. I guess you can call selling sleeping pills and herbal teas a good start. Hehe.
Black Noir: (He seems to silently laugh under his mask, then lowers his head.)
Y/N: …Earving? they touch his shoulder
Earving: (He turns around and looks at them…Then…He slowly removes his mask, revealing a pleading right eye. He scribbles a note.) PLEASE USE YOUR POWER ON ME
Y/N: Huh? You want me…to make you fall asleep?
Earving: (Nods more frantically. Then he sheds a tear and hugs them, nesting his face into their belly.)
Y/N: Alright. (stroking his hair and helping him lie down on their lap You're so beautiful. They smile with emotion, then slowly raises their hand above his face. A gentle, slow rain of turquoise dust slowly falls like a mist of rain on his eyes. Y/N takes special care in using their powers at a snail's pace to utterly soothe their sweet raven prince. They begin to sing.)
Go to sleep, the twilight's softly falling
Rest ye well
Beneath the evening star
Troubled hearts, find repose
'Neath the drowsy spell of night
Cares of day, drift away
As the sun sinks out of sight
Go to sleep…
Rest ye well…
Go to sleep…
Go to sleep…
Earving: (As they sing and hum to him, he finds himself slowly turning turquoise in colour, his little cartoon friends nestling in the nook of his arms. He sighs, smiling more and more drunkenly and looking up adoringly at Y/N. He yawns and nuzzles Y/N's belly.)
Y/N: (They smile lovingly and stroke his head, nuzzling his forehead and kissing it, smiling up to their eyes as he completely becomes darkly turquoise. Earving yawns again and smacks his lips together before snuggling his head into their belly more and drifting into a sweet, deep slumber. Rest ye well…) Go to sleep…
(Y/N kisses his head one last time, before shifting so that they are lying down, Earving's head on their stomach and Y/N's arm over his chest and Buster Beaver on top of it.)

Hi. How long have you been keeping aquariums/aquascaping? I started early october so I'm a huge noob. any advice
Hoo, about two years now! But I only started really "aquascaping" my tanks in September. I just have a super small upper hand because I've been into visual art since I was like 13, so I have the gist on making things perty. The thing that shocked me the most is how much art theory carries over to aquascaping. The Greenaqua youtube channel has interviews with misters Josh Sim and Takayuki Fukada, who are both world class professional aquascapers. Both super humble with great advice. Like I said, visual art and aquascaping go hand in hand, so any videos or theories on light and shadow, framing, and stuff like that that have nothing to do with fish can easily be applied to fish for a kickass effect.
I'm definitely still learning too and I'm still working out the kinks of scaping!
I guess the number one tip I can give outside of what Sim and Fukada say are:
Keep fish that do not burrow and don't poop a whole lot. That pretty picture I took of that aquascape of mine? Destroyed within a week because I housed a goldfish in it and he had other plans for redecorating. Also since he poops so much, I have to do 50% water changes on the tank three times a week or else the plants melt from too high ammonia.
Which brings me to:
Water changes work miracles for plants. The snobby youtube experts on fishkeeping swear by expensive co2 systems and dosing minerals and vitamins daily. Bullshit. While, yeah, co2 helps, and vitamins are necessary every once in a while, you can easily have a beautiful tank without either if you pick the right plants and keep your water clean. I've also noticed that low light plants are ideal for stuff like this because you can tune the light to be right for them without being so high that algae forms at all (which was a huge problem for me!) It seems counterintuitive, but more water changes, less light is what finally cured my plants. (As well as trimming away the melty gross looking damaged leaves.)
Basically the more water changes you can do a week, the healthier a tank will be. Focus on getting the biosphere stable enough to let plants flourish and then add small life forms, like snails or shrimp, and move from there.
I have no idea how much you already know, so I'm assuming you already know the basics of the nitrogen cycle, needing filters and heaters, and basic tank size requirements for fish, so please let me know if you need me to clarify or you have any specific questions!
I could seriously go on forever about this lol

TheSeaVoices Drawing Playlist
A mixture of drawing moods, themes and favourites, not necessarily relevant lyric-wise but all very carefully selected for zero frustration - maximum flow, and perhaps an element of sexiness?
If you want a 43 track playlist for drawing or painting to - this works :)
-
1- Wallowa Lake Monster, Sufjan Stevens
Fucking love the fucking lyrics! Beautiful story and atmosphere and voice. I hadn’t listened to Sufjan much before watching Call Me By Your Name and just caning Visions of Gideon for weeks after.
2- Experiment In Terror, Henry Mancini
From the 60’s noir thriller of the same name - so stylish and cool - what a soundtrack sir! I love the slow threat and slinkiness.
3- My Body, Perfume Genius
Similar slink here, dirty kind of glide. Have seen PG a couple of times live and just ABSORBED it into my soul - he dances up there like a beautiful table-dancer and the crowd is moving with him - always good albums to paint to.
4- Danke Schoen, Wayne Newton
Turn this way up! 21 year old Wayne blasts this out like a genius - his voice is amazing and so feminine. I know it from Ferris Bueller's Day Off originally where it is put to very good use.
5- My Little Brown Book, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane
I can listen to Duke Ellington all day every day, those brushy cymbals in this are so lazy cool. That’s the third sixties song so far.
6- One More Kiss Dear, Vangelis
Bladerunner, one of my favourite films.  WHAT A FUCKING SOUNDTRACK! This song was an accidental recording sung for the demo by Don Percival (not the intended singer) and the weird spooky vocal just worked for the mock vintage sound.
7- Verbarhemiopia, Ed Dowie
Released through Lost Map Records. I know these people and they always have great acts - I had a lot of exceptional experiences on the Inner Hebridean island of Eigg with them. This track is just a beautiful, pulsing moonbeam.
8- Just Like Honey, The Jesus and Mary Chain
Such a sleazy, druggy, sexy song - dirty guitar and sensual drums - the opening drum intro, borrowed from (another 60’s track), Be My Baby by The Ronettes coming up on this list at number 38.
9- Grid, Perfume Genius
I rec the video!
10- Here, Pavement
Oh Pavement - a big part of my identity! - Live, they are a fucking dream! This song is a regular ear worm.
11- Demon Host, Timber Timbre
Great lyrics, great album
12- Animal Friends, P-ano
The only song I’m into on this album, the atmosphere is great. A sad little song.
13- Sleepwalk, Santo and Johnny
1959 so lets call it 60’s again XD. A great instrumental - that slide, steel guitar sound is lush and the asmr trigger of my dreams
14- Hang Out The Stars In Indiana, Al Bowlly
MY FAVOURITE SONG OF ALL FUCKING TIME. I can and do listen to this on repeat all through a drawing even if it takes a day. Withnail & I introduced me - one of my favourite films. And, of course Bowlly is on The Shining too.
15- Wasted Teens, Monoganon
Lost Map records again, excellent and crazy live performance from these on Eigg.
16- The Alien, Ben Salisbury, Geoff Barrow
Such dark foreboding anticipation. From the Annihilation soundtrack - brilliant film and score. I love Portishead too.
17- Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries, Al Bowlly
Hey cheer up everyone - fuck it!
18- Wanna Sip, Fever Ray
I do! This is from their live recording at the Troxy - I WAS THERE —- oooooooooooof fuck WHAT A SHOW honestly!
19- Lipstick Stains, Jay Som
“I wanted to musically capture the immediate and intense but beautiful feeling of infatuation.” —— yep!
20- Heat Wave, Snail Mail
Yes! They are brilliant - saw them live at End Of The Road and the tent was CRAMMED!!!!!! The atmosphere was amazing - she is so young and so great.
21- I Love How You Love Me, The Paris Sisters
Hello 1960’s! The creamy Spector sound and that spoken word is amazing.
22- Shadow, Chromatics
Loved this on Twin Peaks The Return, it’s a gem and perfect for drawing/painting to.
23- Bankrobber, The Clash
I always sing ‘Daddy was a vampire’
24- Do Your Best, John Maus
Slo-mo beauty.
25- Canadian Girl, The Walkmen
Nice vintage-tinged weirdness and soul.
26- Wave of Mutilation (UK SURF) Pixies
I love Pixies, only seen them live once but it was very, very, very special. Beautiful, laid back b side version that I prefer to the album track.
27- Fell An Ox
There was a time where all I would listen to was King Creosote - it was an obsession! I have lost count of KC gigs I’ve been to.
28- Slow West, Django Django
Love the film, love the soundtrack, loved Django Django up till the last few releases. There is a live version of this on KEXP from four years ago which is the one I usually listen to. Fucking brilliant live - got to see them on Eigg one time too. I rec the Slow West film if you haven’t seen it.
29- Withnail’s Theme, Jack Hallam
Great film and soundtrack - a big favourite.
30- Portofino 1, Raymond Scott
60’s!  Ha - I hadn’t realised this at all till writing all this.
31- Lady Gaylord, Raymond Scott
From Manhattan Research Inc a collection of his advertising jingles and snippets from the 60’s
32- The Pink Room, Angelo Badalamenti
Filthiest song ever? From Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me
33- Goodnight Felicia, Chris Bear
From the score to excellent TV show, High Maintenance. I do love Grizzly Bear anyway and cried at their last gig I went to - I always cry at gigs though so….
34- Plainsong, The Cure
My teenage self was a massive Cure fan and I dedicated my record player, school books, wardrobe and bedroom to them! Saw them live only once (the LIGHTS!!!!) because I was too young, obsessed over Robert Smith a lot! This song and the whole album were a big favourite. Beautiful.
35- A Reluctant Hero/Betsy/End Credits Taxi Driver, Bernard Herrmann
I love Herrmann and I really love Taxi Driver. This is just…. ooof!
36- I Fall In Love Too Easily, Chet Baker
Jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 1954- what a pretty little voice.
37- Looking Back I Should Have Been Home More, Richard Swift
Just lovely, so sad about Swift.
38- Be My Baby, The Ronettes
The best opening song use ever- MEAN STREETS - turn this RIGHT up please.
39- Go, Sparklehorse, Flaming Lips - Daniel Johnston cover
Doubly sad because of Sparklehorse and Daniel Johnston. I have seen The Flaming Lips many times throughout their career - from small gigs to radio telescope gigs! What a fucking show!
40- Every Night, Perfume Genius
Just nice stuff. Like I said - live he is so sensual- his moves are amazing.
41- Fireflies Made Out of Dust, Happy Jawbone Family Band
Great track. Love the lyrics.
42- Sleeping Lessons, The Shins
Richard Swift again, on keyboards. I really enjoy the historical references and atmosphere on this.
43- Smoke Rings, Les Paul, Mary Ford
1952 - ssssso ssssssspooooky

20 Ideas To Help You Keep Your Livelihood During Quarantine
So you’re in quarantine. You do not know what day of the week it is anymore, because you wake up only to sleep again. You just want to take a nap, after a long day of sitting around.
Come on fam, don’t be that guy.
You’re tired of watching the news, you’ve exhausted your play list and you have completed your Netflix list. There are still plenty of things to do. I’ve got you covered.
20 fun ideas/ways to maintain your livelihood.
1.       Do a Challenge
There are fun challenges going around on social media every other day, pick one you like (make sure you’re good at it). Scratch that; just have fun with it. What have you to lose?
Don’t mind the embarrassment. I mean it’s only going to be on the Internet forever. Here are some fun challenges to try.
2.       Stay Fit
It’s important to stay fit and healthy; you do not want to leave this quarantine with diabetes or some fitness related disease. One you could have avoided by just doing a few exercises. Find an online instructor, download a fitness video, stick to it, and be true to yourself.
For the first timers, be sure to warm up thoroughly before any routine and don’t push yourself too hard.
3.       Try something new
There are plenty of things to do outside your usual routine. Write a blog, create an app, write a book, do some art, learn how to play an instrument, try an on-line business, write a poem, try to rap.
Trust me you’ll have a new respect for the professionals in these different fields. And of course you’ll have fun, plus you may just be a Steve Jobs, Eric Worre, Mark Zuckerberg in the making.
4.       Plan life after
Well I hate to be the bearer of the good news, but the quarantine is ending soon, I mean it will end eventually. And when it does, you need to have planned your kickoff journey step for step. You do not want to be the snail in the race. You want to hit the ground running.
Also for recreational purposes; plan that family vacation, be intentional.
5.       Network
Connect with people. Your friends, your family, people you rarely talk to, your future workmates or business partners, people you look up to, celebrities, everyone. This is the time they’re not too occupied. You may learn something or just simply build your network.
6.       Grow Deeper in Knowledge
Read that blog, read a novel, read a magazine, read a Bible, read the TV remote manual, read the instructions on the sanitizer bottle, just read or watch a documentary.
Knowledge is power and it is satisfactory to know that you’re smarter than you were just a moment ago. No need to thank me.
7.       Know the back-story
Don’t you ever get curious about the most weird topics; like why is shoe polish black or how a TV came to be or why dinosaurs no longer exist or why that is your favourite movie of all time. What is the back-story? This is good a time as any to find out.
8.       Your own version
Make your own version of the harry potter novel series, try the moon walk or the nae nae and add your own spin on it, cover your favourite song, re-create the Monalisa, your favourite scene from the Avengers movie. Have fun, but be careful.
9.       In door games
Luddo, playing cards, chess, checkers, monopoly, snakes and ladders, indoor hide and seek, charades. The possibilities are end-less, you can even invent your own game. And if you’re home alone, try online games.
10.   Volunteer
Apply to organisations like VSO and be of good service to your community. Of course while following the safety measures provided by W.H.O and not breaking curfew. You can even be recruited as an E-volunteer. You can offer your skills and help the global community without leaving home.
Donating, sharing food and supplies to people in need is also one effective and important way you could volunteer. Big shout out to everyone doing this.
11.   Get Creative
Try a new recipe, do some DIY life hacks, do some art, make a dance routine, write code, knit a face mask, learn how to make a sanitizers or just soap, try new things, you may be surprised that you actually were or can get really good at something  you had just never tried.
This could also be one way to channel your emotions, and it’s definitely therapeutic.
 12.   Pray
Get down on your knees and pray. Be thankful that you’re still alive, but do not take it for granted. This is a wakeup call. PRAY!
13.   Solve a problem
Fathers, mothers, siblings, you have been successfully dodging the responsibility of helping your child, kid sister, or nephew with math home-work. There’s nowhere to run now, you might as well just dive in. Good luck!
14.   Do some chores
Husband, brother, uncle, working mother, step mother, student in boarding school; you’ve been dodging chores for quite a while now. The jig is up mate, just get to work. There’s so much to do; sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, slashing, washing dishes, doing the laundry, cleaning bathrooms, dusting, cooking . Wait on second thought; you should leave cooking to the pro’s ok.
15.   Deep clean your home
You know that kind of cleaning mother always makes you do when her in-laws are visiting the next day or right before Christmas, or right when you get your holidays. If you don’t, this is the time to find out.
Do some general cleaning; (de-clutter, re-organise, scrub, re-paint, and remove that cob-web). It should be fun.
16.   Talk to a loved one
This is the time to constantly check on the people closest to you. Make sure they’re safe and carrying on good. Send them a word of encouragement (SPEAK LIFE).  Help them out if you can.
If you’re in need, reach out to your loved ones, there’s no shame in survival. This is a life or death situation.
17.   Shoot your shot
Gents, you know that lady, the one that drives you crazy, the one you’ve never worked up the courage to go talk to. This is it, don’t wait. Ladies, there’s that one brother that is always allegedly too busy for you, well thank heavens he has no excuse now. Go for it. I mean, what have you to lose?  “If you die you die”.
18.   Throw-back
This is the best time to set up a slide-show (pictures, videos, recordings) and some good music; sit together as a family and journey through all those memories. The fun times, embarrassing times, triumphant times, emotional times, celebrations, losses. These are all important because they lead up to who you are now.
19.   Leave a mark
Write a book, an article, a blog, a song, invent a new sewing technique, create a master piece (art), play the guitar like no one ever has. Let this period be an inspiration to you. Let the world, your descendants or even just your grand children remember you for something you created during the lockdown (Covid 19). I mean all great innovators start somewhere right.
20.   What’s your take
I mean I know I promised y’all 20 ideas, but we all know there’s a lot more. And I do not want to make this blog one long boring grandma story, so I’ll just pass y’all the ball. For any ideas, tips and additions visit my comment section.
If I’ve been of any help to someone you’re welcome.
Shout outs!
To all the Health workers fighting at the fore-front of this pandemic, I salute you. The scientists working everyday towards getting a cure, the generous people donating and sharing something in their different capacities and capabilities, the governments making the crucial decisions to guide every sector accordingly, the volunteers reaching out to the communities globally at the local level, the security force making sure we maintain order where there should be panic and fear, the local food delivery guy and every single person helping out in any and every way they can; we’re thankful and grateful. You’re the real heroes. May God Bless You.

Day 5!!
Welcome, said the Llama, What can I help you with?? We have a giant claw problem and we thought that you might have a cure!!
Tumblr media
Hmm, so I'm guessing you've seen the video then?? Well yes, and while we know it wasn't a crab claw in the video, the way you helped shrink that snail, well we thought maybe you could use some of your magic on the Christmas Crab!! Not magic, science!! Oh ok..So do you think you can help?? It's not just a talent show at stake, it's Crabmas itself!! I will see what I can do..I will try my best to save Crabmas, but a crab claw is much different from a snail, it may work, it may do nothing or it may do something totally unexpected.. Let's get started!! For the next three hours the Llama added ingredients to his cauldron, but to everyone watching, it mostly just looked like a bunch of beans..which it mostly was!! :-D After a few hours work the Llama was done!!
Tumblr media
I've done all I can do, it is now up to you to try it and see if this cure will help!! Thank you for your hard work, said the Christmas Crab!!

Hi! I'm Lenny and I just turned 20 this past May (2018) :) I'm currently in New Mexico but I'll be moving back to Texas, my home state, soon!
My interests are, in no particular order: Anime, Voice Acting, Painting, Drawing, Jfashion, Lolita Fashion, Music (as in making/playing it), Kpop (EXO and Monsta X are my favs), Gothic fashion, sunsets/sunrises, plushies, kawaii things, Youtube (Markiplier, JSE and Crank Gameplays are the best), Singing, Baking and Cooking, Writing, Video Games (KH is best game), creepy places, unsolved murders/mysteries, serial killers (I met my current gf talking about murder and our favorite serial killers, so...yeah), and I'm a total nerd for dark blue and bright yellow color combos.
My perfect pen pal would probably be someone who is at least into anime and some kind of art form so we could share and motivate one another, and someone who wants snail mail. I'd be fine with emailing back and forth to see if we vibe at all (be warned- I have social anxiety so I take a while to warm up to people!). I'd love if they were into kawaii and jfashion as well as voice acting because we could bond over that and give each other coord advice and all that stuff! Really though I'm just looking for someone my age or 2-3 years older who accepts LGBTQ+ of all kinds as I'm genderfluid with a transgender girlfriend. Also I prefer no drinking and I do not tolerate mention of drug use/abuse. I've had family members die from that stuff so it's very touchy. It'd be cool if you had dyed hair, too! I currently have bright pink for the third time and I'm loving it!
My tumblr is nerdylenny.tumblr.com and the email I'm okay with giving out to get a feel for vibes is nerdylennygames @ gmail . com (without the spaces obvi) :)
Additional Info: I suffer from Depression and Social Anxiety as well as Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I struggle with Anorexia currently and self image issues. I've been known to have some fits of psychopathy of some sort, not sure what to call it as it hasn't been discussed with a therapist (I've seen and heard things that weren't actually there, to say the least) Please do not contact me if you "don't believe" in mental illnesses or you think that the "cure" to my disorder is exercise and a vegan diet (not opposed to veg-diets tho, I'd love a vegetarian pen pal that could share recipes with me!)
I think that about covers it! I hope all goes well and I can find a like minded pen pal somewhere in the world!!

Of Mussels and Men
I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's why. -John Steinbeck
When you think of conservation what comes to mind?
Probably any one of the charismatic critters like polar bears, whales, sharks and sea turtles, the list goes on. These fellas are definitely worth saving not only because humans are to blame for their decline, but I'm afraid to tell you that (*whispers off to the side*) single-species conservation is not always the most beneficial to a community or ecosystem. A professor of mine likes use the term “bauble conservation” because as humans we have a tendency to conserve iconic species that are special to us in someway, like baubles on a Christmas tree; but without the tree...oi, I think you know where this is going.
Tumblr media
The Yale School of the Environment published an article discussing the need for and efficacy of the conservation of umbrella species, like the sage grouse of the American West (photographed above by Dave Showalter). *Holding back my laughter* I recommend watching “the dance of the sage grouse” on YouTube because I can’t in good conscience link it here. To highlight the article, though,
it’s the idea routinely advocated by conservationists that establishing and managing protected areas for the benefit of one surrogate species — from gorillas to grizzly bears — will also indirectly benefit a host of other, less charismatic species sharing the same habitat.
and that,
the species that stand out to human eyes don’t always turn out to be the best umbrella species for their habitat.
I’m not claiming that the above mentioned ‘charismatic critters’ were intended as umbrella species. Nor are umbrella species the cure-all to conservation. As mentioned in the Yale article, the umbrella species-conservation approach can sometimes leave holes in terms of ecosystem protection by unintentionally excluding a particular group of organisms. Nonetheless, I believe that the umbrella approach to conservation should always be considered, especially when drafting governmental legislation. It isn't just the polar bears and whales that need our help - it’s the trees and the bees and all manner of creepy crawly things on this planet.
And it’s the shellfish.
Before we dive in to mussel conservation, let’s have a quick brief about shellfish.
Tumblr media
Mussel is a common name for members of several families of bivalve molluscs.
Molluscs make up the second-largest phylum of the Kingdom Animalia. This phylum consists of invertebrate animals (they ain't got no spine) including snails and slugs, cephalopods (squids, octopuses, and cuttlefish) and bivalves.
Bivalves are molluscs enclosed by two hinged shells (pictured below). While all bivalves are shellfish not all shellfish are bivalves - just know that for this blog I will use them interchangeably.
Mussel is frequently used to refer to marine bivalves in the family Mytilidae.
I will be referring to various types of mussels by their scientific names next week. For example, Mytilus edulis is the scientific name for the common blue mussel.
Using binomial nomenclature (the use of two terms, usually in Latin, to denote the genus and species of an organism) is good practice for identification as (1) common names can be used for a variety of species (even from different genera!) and (2) the same species can have different colloquial names. I will continue to refer to scientific names throughout this blog, so keep track of them - we’ll play bivalve bingo later!
Tumblr media
*Classifying organisms can get a bit confusing. You may be able to list some examples of species but there are also families and classes and other levels of classification which can group seemingly unrelated organisms together. Don’t get too wrapped up in the terminology right now, we will go over it in detail next week.
Like oysters, mussels are incredibly effective at filtering water (check out the video below). Although filtration rate can vary depending on factors like mussel size and water quality, estimates suggest that in good conditions a single adult mussel can filter upwards of 50 liters of water a day! This powerful filtration system helps keep estuaries and coasts healthy by filtering out suspended particles (like plankton) and trapping nutrients from terrestrial runoff, inlcuding chemical contaminants. Together they can transform a muddy bay into a thriving community, simply by being there. Mussels also act as ecosystem engineers by creating reefs that serve as nurseries for fish larvae, refuge for juvenile fish, invertebrates and other creepy crawlies, and increase the presence of additional bivalves and fish. These attributes make them an excellent example of an umbrella species (photographed below by donieve).
Tumblr media
If you just learned something new about mussels - great!
But, we (yes even the scientists) have much much more to learn about these splendid shellfish. Next week we will explore the diversity of mussels around the world (even in the harshest spots in the ocean!). Because we still have so much to learn about mussels (wishin’ we had done that global review earlier, haha) we will also be discussing the history, cultivation, destruction and restoration of other shellfish reefs over the next few weeks (we’re going to visit old mate, Ostrea angasi).
