Your Water Garden: Koi Fish - The Shining Jewels
Tumblr media
Animals with really good PR teams always seem to do well. Elephants? Supposedly have steel-trap memory banks. Dogs? Dogs are just the best, as we all know. But koi fish? Koi fish are not very popular. Although colorful swimmers aren't A-list celebrities like some other species, they have a lot going for them. A koi is not only a pet, but also an art piece, says Taro Kodama, president of Kodama Koi Farm. They are known as living jewels - beautiful as a single koi, even more stunning when they are in a group. Despite their beauty, docile, and gentle nature, they are relatively easy to maintain with the correct environment, filtration systems, and food, says Laura Hilstrom, Aquatics Lead in the Department of Herpetology & Ichthyology at the San Diego Zoo. The koi fish can easily be trained to eat right out of your hand. Watching koi swim can be incredibly calming and mesmerizing, and koi keepers take great pride in caring for their aquatic pets. A few fun facts about these beautiful, resilient, aquatic stars. 1. It Has a Long, Impressive History It might be said that Koi fish are happy accidents. Japanese carp farmers discovered unusual color variations of their fish around the 1600s. As Hilstrom explains, today's popular koi are actually ornamental types of domesticated carp. Chinese black carp were bred for red color mutations (noticed around 720 C.E.) that were originally developed into a variety of fancy goldfish goldfish. Emperors and nobility began keeping colorful varieties of black carp soon after. The koi fish was originally bred for consumption, like all other carp, but in the 1800s farmers began breeding them solely as pets, because of their stunning appearance. Koi were being raised in the United States, England, and Europe by the 1900s, and they were considered valuable pets worldwide by the 1960s. Six continents out of seven now have koi as pets, according to the San Diego Zoo. Hilstrom explains that the Japanese referred to the carp as nishikigoi, which could be translated as 'brocaded' or 'braided' in reference to the colorful textiles of the country. Japanese nishikigoi varieties are what westerners now call koi fish. After an exhibition in Tokyo, Japan in the early 1900s, koi became popular worldwide after being part of a trend in Japan during the 1820s. It is now a popular hobby fish culture with more colorful variation than ever before. There is no limit to what they will eat Here's one of the reasons koi make great pets: They don't have a picky appetite. It eats everything from snails, insects, algae, and plants. It even chews fruit. You probably know there are specially formulated foods to meet the nutritional needs of koi if you keep them as pets or if you've seen them on display. In addition to floating food, the fish feed on the surface, which delights spectators. Plus, the beautiful swimmers only have to consume their meals infrequently, which is a bonus for jet-setting pet owners. According to Kodama, they eat algae on the wall for weeks without food. In contrast to dogs and cats, you don't have to worry about them when you're on vacation. Colors are abundant with them Although koi are famous for their red color, they aren't the only fish species with this hue. It is actually possible to find koi in a range of colors, including orange, yellow, black, white and blue. In Kodama's opinion, there are more than 100 different varieties of koi, but they are all the same species. The fish are carp, just with a different appearance. There are over 100 types of koi, but here are some of the more popular varieties: Hilstrom says koi are descendants of Cyprinus carpio, the common carp. The species and subspecies of koi carp vary by the region, but their color varieties reach 200 or more. A color variety is determined by its coloration, color pattern, and scale pattern. A popular Gosanke koi variety includes varieties like Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku Sanke, and Showa Sanshoku. It Is Hard For Them to Find Space The big fish, small pond thing doesn't work for Koi (the big fish, small pond thing doesn't work for them). Koi can reach heights of between 2 and 3 feet, and some varieties, like the Chagoi, can reach up to 4 feet, 12 meters long. It's important to remember that if you plan to keep koi as pets, you'll have to allow them to grow; little ones can live comfortably in large aquariums, but will eventually need access to a large pond. Koi for Sale are also heavyweights; they weigh around 35 pounds (16 kg) each, so it is recommended that each adult pond be filled with approximately 500 to 1000 gallons (1893 to 3785 liters) of water. 5. They are able to stick around for a very long time Koi make a good pet if you're looking for longevity. According to some reports, some koi have lived for more than 200 years (which may be a longer-term investment than you originally intended). Keeping your koi healthy with properly filtered water and solid nutrition will increase the odds of it living for many decades. You can keep them as relaxed and unstressed as you can by keeping their environment free from parasites and toxic chemicals.

Tokyo Insect Zoo (Japanese Video Game Obscurity)
This article is part of our Japanese Obscurities feature. We put out a whole book about them, which is available as both a full color hardcover and a Kindle ebook from Amazon! If you’d like to see more of these features, please check out the book and if you enjoyed it, leave a five star review so we can convince the publisher to do a follow up with even more interesting, offbeat, or historically important Japanese games!
Tokyo Insect Zoo (shortened to “TIZ” on the cover) is like a very loose rendition of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis but for kids. Indeed, it’s actually based on the children’s book Ryo no Kabutomushi Ryokou (“Ryo’s Rhinoceros Beetle Journey”), though significantly altered.

RFA plus V and Sarean found out MC can transform into different animals. They catch her when she’s secretly in the middle of transformation
RFA + Minor Duo catch Mc while she’s transforming into an Animal
I just thought about Tokyo Mew Mew Lmao
Jumin
Your husband was on guard the last days.
He noticed that his beloved cat was outside a lot with another cat.
He wanted to consul with you but whenever he saw the brown cat you were nowhere to be found.
One day he decided to just chase out the cat but saw how the cat transformed into….you?!
He was speechless as you patted your clothes to get the grass away.
,,Jumin?!“ you called out when you noticed him.
,,Mc….?“
The atmosphere was quite odd but you decided to tell him the truth about your form.
You were human and could transform into animals.
,,Although, I still don’t know why I have this power…“ you mumbled and told him about the time when you transformed into a fish and were about to get fished.
He didn’t think that it was funny when he heard it….
,,Don’t transform into animals that are easy to kill...“ he begged.
Since then none other than you was allowed to kill insects or to order to let them bring outside.
,,Mc…why did you become an ant…?“
,,JUMIN HAN YOUR WIFE IS BEHIND YOU!“ you laughed while being human.
Zen
You were kind of troubled.
You would often transform into cats and you knew how allergic he was against cats.
Well you could also transform into dogs or rabbits.
You could transform into every animal.
Zen found out when he searched you and found a dog instead.
He wanted to chase the dog out but your time was running out and you transformed back.
,,ZEN!“ you yelled when he collapsed in the next moment.
,,I had a nightmare….“ he croaked.
,,No you didn’t babe…“ you answered and explained that you were the animal’s queen who had the tasks to figure out the animals problem and solve them as a human.
Yoosung
Your husband was really surprised when all the animals approached you.
He didn’t think much of it however.
They seemed to love you and this was enough for him.
But then you transformed into a fish.
Yoosung was so puzzled when your fishy form twitched.
He reacted immediately and put you into water.
,,Thank you…“ you mumbled when you transformed back.
,,What happened…?“ he asked you with a trembling voice.
,,My family is under a curse. I transform into different animals and can change the curse only of I do the right thing.“ you explained.
,,I somehow don’t get it…what’s the right thing to do…?“ he asked you.
,,Not sure yet…“ you answered and laughed.
Jaehee
,,Mc? Mc!“ she called you once again.
When she opened your door and saw an owl, she was so shocked.
But she was even more shocked when she saw that the owl transformed into you.
,,Jaehee! What are you-“
,,Oh dear….“
Jaehee was quite shocked to know the truth.
You were a fairy and one of your powers was to transform into animals.
The good thing was that you could transform into an elephant and let her ride on your back to let her see the world from up there.
,,We need to be cautious or else they will take you to the Zoo…“ she laughed when the two of you had to hide.
Saeyoung
He somehow already knew although he thought it was unrealistic.
But everything was confirmed once he found a dolphin in the tub.
It was kind of odd to explain him this power but at least the two of you could trick Jumin.
,,Transform into Elly and let him get shocked!“ your fiancé laughed.
,,No, he will rush here or home and Jaehee will end up working overtime again!“ you tried to hide your excitement.
,,Transform into a mice and let’s scare Saeran!“
He tried to make fun of the situation but you also knew that he was worried.
Before chasing out a spider he always looked around for you in order to not kill you.
Saeran
,,Huh?“ he gasped when he saw you coming out of the sea.
Just now there was….wasn’t it an animal?
Did he look wrong?
,,Leader is back.“ you said into your bracelet and saw Saeran observing you.
The two of you first sat down.
You told him the truth, you were a hero and could transform into the animal which was needed the most.
,,Okay but…isn’t it kind of dangerous?“ he asked you.
You saw how worried he was.
This was the reason for your secret.
It took him a while until he got used to your form but it wasn’t that severe as he thought.
Jihyun
It was kind of odd that Jihyun‘s reaction wasn’t as crazy as you thought.
A few minutes ago he just saw you transforming into a cat and becoming human again.
But instead he thought that this made you even more something special.
,,So, you don’t have anything against it?“ you asked him unsure.
,,Of course I don’t have anything against it. I‘m happy that you‘re that way, it makes you so special.“ he laughed.
,,Can you control the power?“ he asked you.
You thought that it was really sweet that he was so interested into you.

Release: DemoDemo PlayStation Volume 12, 1995 November (PCPX-96018)

This volume of DemoDemo PlayStation is still pretty short on notable titles, but it’s not without at least a few quirky standouts by way of demos for Tokyo Insect Zoo and Namco Museum Volume 1, although you can only fool around with Rally X in the latter. There’s also a decent amount of coverage for Western games that you’ve probably heard of, although the most notable titles of the bunch are relegated to video clips. Still, not the worst demo disc I’ve uploaded to the blog, so without further ado, here’s the full content listing:

I love visiting zoo's in other countries. There were so many different species and animals I didnt know existed, mostly tree animals and birds. The elephants, sun bear and otters were my favourite 😍 We caught a train there pretty easily so you know, we seem to be getting a hold of this train system 😂 The zoo isn't very big (compared to Taronga) but has heaps to look at and it's still plenty of walking 😂 which is made even more intense with the 30degree heat. I thought the weather was going to be 23-26tops but its like a 28 minimum 😂 3 days in Tokyo and we saw 2 insects (a dead cicada and a slow cockroach). "How odd" we thought. "Hardly any birds either" .. well! They're at the zoo! Saw a bunch of colourful spiders and that night we found a bunch of itchy bites on Trent's legs 😣 (at 上野動物園 Ueno Zoological Gardens, Tokyo) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2GZYgpAoad/?igshid=j64h46tiq6bh

In addition to the traditional attractions of D.C. - Smithsonian museum, United States Congress, monuments - you'll find fresh food, art and night views.
You can spend the morning browsing the farmers' market cache and contemporary exhibitions and taking afternoon views from the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument before watching the show at the Performing Arts Center John F. Kennedy. If you plan to visit at the end of March and into April, don't miss wandering along the Tidal Basin, where you'll find thousands of pink cherry blossoms, not to mention excellent conditions for exploring the city's neighborhoods.
[toc]
1. Lincoln Memorial
Although the Lincoln Memorial is just one of many County monuments, Honest Abe in real life is also one of the favorite places for visitors. History buffs can enjoy the man of two famous (though powerful) speeches, the second opening address and the Gettysburg Address, both of which are carved into the opposite walls of the monument.
Fans of art and architecture history will enjoy the building's striking design by Henry Bacon, complete with 38 Doric columns, 36 of which represent states in the Union. states when Lincoln died.
While most agree that the Lincoln Memorial is worth checking out during the day or at night, many tourists have recently said the most attractive time to visit is after dark when the attraction is lit. brighter and less crowded. In addition, evening temps will make the peak summer visit more comfortable.
2. Vietnam Veterans and Korean War Veterans Memorials
One of the most moving war memorials, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial - or "The Wall," as it is often referred to - is a long black granite wall with the names of more than 58,000 Americans lost. networks during the Vietnam War were raised on the surface.
Recent visitors have said their visits to the site are heartbreaking but stimulating and powerful, adding that even the most difficult people will find it difficult to read. the name of the wall.
If you are looking for a specific person, keep in mind that the names of the soldiers are organized by the date they died, not alphabetically. Also, reviewers recommend using the attraction's name books and visiting during the day when there's ample sunlight.
As you wander along the east side of the Mall, venture out to the Korean War Veterans Memorial. In honor of the 1.5 million people who served in the "Forgotten War," this privately-funded site features 19 stainless steel statues of soldiers in combat.
In a triangular area called the Field of Service, the soldiers' statues march toward an American flag. Next to the soldiers is a 164-foot-long granite wall of homage to the unknown armies that fought during the Korean War.
Another highlight of the monument is the Pool of Remembrance, a quiet place to reflect. However, some past visitors warn that the monument lacks signs, so young travelers may not understand as much as those who lived through the war.
3. The Tidal Basin
If you've never been to D.C. earlier, planning to spend some time along the Tidal Basin, a 2-mile-long pond that once associated with the Potomac River and acted as the backdrop for some of D.C.'s most favorite places.
Every spring, the Tidal Basin bursts with color when cherry blossom trees (given to D.C. from Tokyo) bloom into cotton candy-colored tufts, and they attract a lot of visitors. You can follow the path around the basin, but many visitors have recently suggested testing the waters on a rowing boat.
Paddleboats are available to rent starting March 15 for $18 per hour for a two-passenger boat or $30 per hour for a four-passenger boat. You can pick up a paddle boat every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from March 15 to October 9 from the marina near Maine Avenue.
Even if you don't make it to town for the cherry blossoms, you won't want to miss the three memorials that can be found along the Tidal Basin's shores: the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.
4. Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum
[caption id="attachment_703186" align="aligncenter" width="1024"]  [/caption]
Attracting millions of people each year, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum contains a trove of celebrated aircraft, including Amelia Earhart's Lockheed Vega 5B, Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St.
Flyer 1903 Wright of Louis and Wilbur and Orville Wright, among others. The exhibition includes a flight simulator, an IMAX theater, and Einstein Observatory. And parents beware: The three-level gift shop is huge, so get ready for pleas from your kids.
Tourists recommend arriving in the morning to avoid the heaviest crowds, which will inevitably flock in, especially once summer rolls around. Some say that parts of the museum also start to look worn, but insist this is a must-visit site for families and aviation enthusiasts.
5. United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
You need to be in the right mind to visit this serious museum focused on the brutality of the Holocaust during World War II. Upon entering the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, you will be issued with an identification card with the name and personal information of a person who has actually experienced the Holocaust;
As you move through the exhibits - Hitler rose to power, propagated anti-Semitism, the terror of the Ultimate Solution - you will be updated about the health of your being.
Past visitors are moved by this powerful museum but warn that its graphic collection is not ideal for young children. Many are particularly impressed with its informative, thorough and respectful display, plus you can easily spend a few hours browsing through its halls.
Tickets are free to visit the museum's permanent exhibition between September and February but are required in the spring and summer and often run out, so consider making your reservation online.
Exhibits and other facilities such as Memorial Hall, Survivors, and Victim Resource Center, library, restrooms, and gift shops can be accessed year-round without tickets.
6. National Gallery of Art
If you are an art connoisseur, you should stop by the National Art Gallery. Including the East Building, which houses the more modern works of the gallery (think: Henri Matisse and Mark Rothko), and the Western Building, which contains the old works of the collection (from Sandro Botticelli to Claude Monet), this museum has enough to fill an entire afternoon;
Pace yourself and maybe order a coffee, gelato or lunch at one of the gallery's five bars and cafes.
Also, if you're traveling in the summertime on a Friday evening, past visitors recommend heading into the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. for some jazz.
Or, tourists suggest catching one of the free concerts offered in the auditorium of the East Building and the East and West Garden courts of the West Building. Monday is available every Sunday night from February to June.
7. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
Many tourists strongly encourage visiting the John F. Kennedy Performing Arts Center, built and named for the beloved US President Camelot. The Kennedy Center has the National Symphony Orchestra, the Suzanne Farrell Ballet Theater and the Washington National Opera, as well as a number of other theaters and music performances throughout the year.
Although ticket prices run a bit high, you can take in performance for free on the Millennium Stage. Past visitors love to take part in a program at the Kennedy Center, adding that the venue's rooftop terrace has spectacular views of the Potomac River and the surrounding area.
To learn about the history and architecture of the theater, recent visitors recommend taking one of the building's free guided tours. Tours are provided several times a day by theater volunteers on weekdays from 10 am to 5 pm. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 1 pm.
8. Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
With over 126 million exhibits on display, this powerful Smithsonian museum at the National Mall attracts millions of visitors every year. Some of the museum's highlights include tarantula feedings in the O.
Orkin Insect Zoo and replicas of giant whales and other sea creatures in the Sant Ocean Hall are 23,000 square meters. You can also venture to the IMAX Theater Samuel C. Johnson for a show or the Butterfly Pavilion for some fun with colorful bugs.
And not stopping at the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum will be completed without stopping by David H. Koch Hall of Human Origins, which traces the history of human species over the past 6 million years and displays life-size models of early human faces generated using modern forensic techniques.
While the museum's famous National Fossil Hall is currently closed while it is undergoing renovation, the dinosaur fossils can be seen in the exhibition "The Last American Dinosaurs: Discovering a Lost World" on the floor. two.
9. Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture
Designed to replicate the three-tiered crowns found in Yoruban art from West Africa, with bronze-colored latticework accents that honor the United States' slave roots, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture opened on 2016 National Mall.
More than 36,000 African American artifacts are displayed inside, including photographs of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and a fedora once worn by Michael Jackson. Although you may have felt when looking around the hotel, past tourists said the museum was "phenomenal" and well worth a visit.
But remember, this institution is still fairly new, so you will need to get free entry from time to time. Same-day tickets are available every day at 6:30 a.m., while advance passes for visits that are three months away are released on the museum's ticket page on the first Wednesday of every month at 9 a.m.
Both are offered on a first-come, first-served basis until they run out. A limited number of walks are also available on weekdays beginning at 1 pm.
10. Washington National Cathedral
Construction first started on this grand cathedral - the sixth-largest in the world - in 1907, but it was not actually completed until 1990. Designed in the Gothic style, the Washington National Cathedral sits surrounded by gardens, creating a pleasant atmosphere for visitors.
Take a stroll around the church and see the tall tunnels and flying pillars, or step inside to admire its intricate stained glass windows. Another highlight is the church's Gargoyle Tour.
This tour - provided from May to September - gives you the opportunity to admire the stone steles and gutters of the building. (There is even a Darth Vader gutter appointed in the 1980s along the right side of the northwest tower.)

In Japan, Deadly Heat Wave Tests Endurance of Even the Most Stoic
By Motoko Rich, Hisako Ueno and Makiko Inoue, NY Times, July 25, 2018
TOKYO--Triple-digit temperatures have hospitalized 23,000 people just in the past week, nearly double the previous record. Some outdoor pools are too hot for swimming. Construction workers wear battery-powered fans to avoid heatstroke, which has killed 86 people since May.
Even for the stoic Japanese, known for tolerating all manner of discomfort, the summer of 2018 has pushed their limits.
The temperature reached a record of almost 106 degrees Fahrenheit at a city outside Tokyo, part of a heat wave described by an official from the Japan Meteorological Agency as “unprecedented” and a “disaster,” and forecast to continue for at least two more weeks.
About half the people taken to the hospital this week are older than 65. In Japan--which has a word, “gaman,” that denotes a sense of bearing with it--the elderly are perhaps more susceptible than anyone to feeling they should simply put up with the heat.
Elderly people grew up without air-conditioning, and now that they live on pensions, many are also cost-conscious.
“They think energy conservation is a good thing, especially after the 3-11 disaster,” said Kazuyo Oyamada, the chief consultant at Mizuho Information & Research Institute. She was referring to the Fukushima earthquake and tsunami disaster of March 2011, which led to a shutdown of the nuclear plants that had provided almost a third of Japan’s electricity.
Nevertheless, sales of air-conditioners at Bic Camera, one of the largest electronics chains, jumped close to 70 percent last week compared to the same period a year ago, and not all of those sales can be to the younger generation.
Tokuhiro Shimomura, 76, a retired factory worker who was headed to a hospital in Tokyo on Wednesday for a routine appointment, said he kept the air-conditioning on at home, though he worried about the expense.
“Last year I would feel cool in my apartment,” he said. “But this year it is just too hot.”
The pool at the Toshimaen Amusement Park in Tokyo was crowded on Wednesday with families seeking refuge during the first week of the school summer vacation. Scattered across the deck, visitors set up small tents to shield from the sun.
Noriko Hosoda, 43, sat in the shade wearing a light yellow jacket to protect herself from ultraviolet rays. She was with her two sons and her sister, Kumiko Niizato, 35, who was celebrating her birthday along with Ms. Hosoda’s younger son, Yuzuki, 8.
Ms. Hosoda said this was the first summer her family had kept the air conditioning on all night.
“We can’t sleep without it,” she said. To save money on electricity, the whole family sleeps in one air-conditioned room.
At an elementary school in Sumoto, a city in western Japan, officials closed the pool because the water temperature had reached 95 degrees. “This never happened before in my life as a teacher,” said Harufumi Ishibashi, 47, a vice principal.
Because of the heat, the 2,000 or so construction workers at the site of the new National Stadium--the central venue for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo--are getting an extra half-hour for their lunch breaks, and free bottles of water, sports drinks and shaved ice.
Koichi Kuromaru, 56, who finished his shift around noon on Wednesday, looked more like he was dressed to hit the ski slopes than to battle the heat. But he opened his jacket to reveal a battery-powered fan stitched into a side pocket, which keeps his upper body cool. Many workers have them.
Mr. Kuromaru also wore a sweat-wicking shirt and carried a thick cloth he could soak with water and wear under his hard hat.
“Whenever workers feel tired they are told to take breaks,” said Mr. Kuromaru, wiping sweat from his brow with a handkerchief.
The heat has raised concerns about how athletes and spectators will cope during the 2020 Olympics. Average temperatures are likely to continue rising, according to Masahide Kimoto, a professor at the Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute of the University of Tokyo. “It’s wrong to think that such intense heat that we’ve never seen before will never happen again,” he said.
For office workers required to wear suits, the extreme heat is something they must simply endure.
“Sometimes clients urge me to take off my necktie,” said Hiroyuki Shigemori, 54, a pharmaceuticals salesman walking into Shimbashi station in Tokyo, his black suit jacket folded over his arm. “I am grateful for that.” (His tie was still on.)
When he was a child, Mr. Shigemori recalled, coaches would not let him or his teammates drink water during baseball practice. “We were told it would just make us tired,” he said.
Now, having heard news reports about children collapsing at sports events--a 6-year-old died after a school insect-hunting expedition--he said he worried that children were still being told to “put up with” the heat.
In fact, coaches are making accommodations.
At Hino High School in Tokyo, Masayuki Shimada, the baseball coach, said he had decided to switch the morning warm-up from a long run to laps in the pool. On the first day of summer training, he said, some students had felt sick from the heat.
“It’s time for the team to tone up, but I don’t want to expose them to excessively tough training and invite injury,” Mr. Shimada said. It was the first time in his career he had changed the routine because of extreme heat.
Walking down a Tokyo street on a clear summer day, you often see a sea of parasols, carried (mostly by women) to block out the sun. Because of the heat this summer, a consortium of local municipalities has set up stalls at zoos, parks and a racetrack where visitors can borrow parasols at no charge.
In the prefecture of Saitama, where the heat record was set this week, local officials have launched a social media campaign to encourage men to carry parasols. “It’s an effective tool for heat and heatstroke,” reads the campaign’s official Twitter account.
