Ooh from the Drama prompts- Can I please have “I know you’re not talking to me…” with Thomas Shelby xx
Congratulations on your milestone !! X
Prompt-"I know you're not talking to me." w/ Tommy
Tumblr media
"I want you out, Tommy!" you yelled at the top of your lungs. You couldn't help the way your body shook as you stood at the foot of your bed, throwing clothes at him. You could hardly look at him and just wanted him out of your flat as quickly as possible. He hadn't realized you watched him last night as he met Diana Mitford in secret. The site of it turned your stomach as you stood in the rain, feeling utterly betrayed.
He came home to you as promised, though it must have been close to dawn. That's when you'd finally succumbed to sleep, aided by the whisky Tommy kept in your kitchen cabinet.
"It's not what you think, love. We've been through this..." Tommy said, running his hands through his hair. His eyes looked more desperate than you'd ever seen them and you wondered if he was taking your threat seriously. The dark circles and his sunken features told you it was most probably the lack of sleep taking its toll though. His health had rapidly begun to deteriorate under the strain of his work with Mosley.
Despite a once thriving relationship and promises of marriage, Tommy was distracted these days with endless meetings, dinners and rallies. At first you told him you understood. In fact, it was moments like these that got you into trouble time and time again. You'd begin to pity him when he came home late looking exhausted and lonely. He'd offer a multitude of excuses for his neglect and you'd forgive him, but today you had to find the courage to change.
Clutching your shivering arms tightly against your body, you attempted to hide your anxiety and confront him. "I know because it's the same bloody speech you've given me since we met, Tom! Everything you do is for the good old cause and I'm not allowed to hear any of it. Now I know why. You didn't want me to find out you're fucking a nazi!" you spat at him. The words were uncharacteristically harsh for you and you broke down the moment the accusation left your lips, dropping onto the bed and hiding your head in your hands.
You felt the warmth of Tommy's bare chest press against your back soothingly and he hushed you, stroking along your shoulders gently. "When my work is done, I will tell you everything. For now, believe me that you're the only woman in my life. You are all I want." His breath fanned over your neck as he spoke and he ventured a tender kiss at the base of your skull to seal his promise. He reached a hand across the mattress to find yours and gave you a reassuring squeeze as he placed kisses down your neck and shoulder.
You felt your resolve slipping as he whispered to you about a ball being held the following week. He promised to show you off properly and dance with you to your heart's content. But only one question sat on the tip of your tongue as you turned to face him with a tear stained face. "Will Oswald Mosley and Diana Mitford be there?" you asked solemnly.
"No," Tommy stated emphatically. With his reassurance, you reluctantly agreed, hoping you could believe his work was only that. However, an ache twisted deep within your gut telling you this all felt far too familiar and you chided yourself for losing your nerve to have a proper conversation about your fears. You weren't sure how he always managed to seduce you back into his arms, but a part of you believed him when he spoke to you this way. Perhaps it's because you wanted to put your faith in him so badly.
When the evening of the ball finally arrived, you felt more confident in your place by Tommy's side. He hadn't had work commitments for three days beforehand and you'd spent time at Arrow House riding in the fresh air and enjoying each other's company. You felt the joy you'd experienced at the beginning of your relationship returning slowly and that made you hopeful.
As Tommy guided you inside the ballroom, you moved with him noting his good mood and you relaxed enough to excuse yourself for a glass of champagne. When you returned, he was nowhere to be found. You circled the dance floor and peered out onto the balcony, but he had disappeared from sight. Finally, you decided to take a stroll through the gardens and that's when you heard the frantic whispers of a couple in passionate argument. You stopped behind a hedgerow to listen, only moments later wishing you'd carried on walking.
"That was one night, Tommy. Why would she mind? A good fuck is how the upper class shake hands," the woman said raising her voice and adding a devilish giggle at the end. You felt your heart catch at her admission. Blinking back tears, you ducked your head to hide as the woman began to move from the shadows.
"Tomorrow evening, same time?" she asked, although it sounded more like a demand than a question. As she moved into a pool of light emanating from the ballroom above, your eyes widened in horror at the recognition. When you realized Diana Mitford stood before you, you shuttered involuntarily waiting for Tommy's reply.
He cleared his throat as Diana shot him a withering glare. "Yes, I'll be there," he choked out finally. You were unable to draw a breath, feeling your chest collapse in on itself as though you'd been stabbed in the heart. How could he do such a thing, you wondered?
Diana turned with a flourish, picking up the skirt of her expensive gown and sashayed triumphantly up the steps to the party. After she had gone, the spell was broken over your frozen form and you began running, only to trip on the stones in the path. Hearing the sudden commotion, Tommy came up behind you and you looked into his ashen face.
"My darling..." he said fumbling for words and reaching for you to help you up.
"I know you're not talking to me. I hope she was worth it, Tommy," you said as you jerked your arm out of his hand and walked away, leaving him alone with his regret.
🍾 Spill champagne~Request a juicy blurb that will make you spill your drink using this drama prompt list.
Written for my 1K celebration.

When he tells her he loves her, she doesn’t say it back.
His wife gives him a sad and pained smile and says “If I could love again, I would love you.”
It hurts.
They have four children now, little Florence is born six months after Polly is murdered and still there is no change.
Y/N cannot love someone who is not her husband.
At the beginning Tommy believed she couldn’t love someone like him, someone who fucked whores by the dozen or someone who drinks himself until he blacks out.
So he changed, he stopped seeking comfort in other women, he stopped drinking so much, he started letting her in because if he did she would’ve understood why it pains him so much that she doesn’t love him.
He is loyal as dog, a dog expecting for his mistress to love him. Even Cyril has an easier time being loved by her.
“She doesn’t love you, she won’t care.” Diana Mitford tries to seduce him the only way she and Mosley know how. They loved forcing people into things they didn’t want.
“I swore a vow, Lady Diana. Besides, I can get the funding for my charities without resorting to prostituting myself for it.” He told her so as he walked away.
He has eighteen months to live. If he cannot make her love him before he dies, then he will have wasted ten years of his life.
When he lies down on the warm grass, he is surprised to find her laying down beside him and gently nudging him awake.
“I do love you, Tom, just not how you deserved.” She whispers and he keeps his eyes shut.
“If you were truly dead, that would’ve been part of the eulogy.” She kissed his lips as if he was snow white and she was prince charming. And like all fairy tales they read to the children, the curse breaks and the winter frost melts away to bring forth spring.

I saw your tags on your Anne Boleyn post about your list of men from history who would have been good in bed, and I'm dying to hear the whole thing! ♡
Ohhhhh, goodness.
♡ Thomas Andrews. A genuinely decent dude, a total babe, a hero...and he went down like a gentleman. (Wink wink.)
♡ Philip Hamilton. Dare I say, even sexier than Dad? Also like his father in that he had the unfortunate tendency to duel...and l o s e.
♡ George Boleyn. First of all, popular history's portrayal of him as an abusive drunk really doesn't have a lot of basis in fact. (His wife has also been unfairly maligned, but that's a story for another day.) What we do know is that he was super smart, ridiculously good-looking, funny, passionate about reform, and an A+ brother. He even  defended himself at his own trial, and did it so well that the court started taking bets on whether or not he'd be acquitted. This smooth son of a bitch, I swear to GOD! He knew he was going down, so he went down swinging. Even if he was ugly as sin, he'd still be on this list for telling the entire court that Henry was a terrible lay. I can actually see the smirk on his face when they handed him that piece of paper.
♡ Babe Lincoln. So tall, so lanky. Him chopping wood in his shirt sleeves while (maaaaaybe) pining for Ann Rutledge? I know the historical record is a mess when it comes to Ann, but the rolled sleeves/pining makes for a very nice combination. Swoon town! (Also kept our nation together in its darkest hour, which is a pretty solid bonus.)
♡ . . .and, conversely, Lewis Powell, the dude who conspired to kill Lincoln. It would definitely only be a one-time hate fuck, but . . . I MEAN.
♡ Tom Mitford, the Branwell Bronte of the 20th century. That picture of him in the t-shirt smoking a PIPE? 10/10. Might have been a fascist, which is v. unfortunate and would ultimately land him with negative points, but accounts differ, and, as usual, I am going with Decca's POV on this one.
♡ Speaking of siblings: Erik Miller, brother of Queen Lee. I have approximately ten thousand books about Lee, and all the pictures of Erik are bookmarked. A happy bonus! ♡ Thomas Wyatt. Eventually ended up bald with a terrible beard and a broken heart, but a TOTAL HOTTIE when he was young. Thin and lanky? Golden hair? Eyes that twinkled like stars? (Not my quote, that is HISTORICAL FACT!) Funny? ROMANTIC?! LOVE POETRY??? Anne, girl...I hope you are having such a fun, sexy time in heaven.
♡ Peter Townsend, dashing hero of the Battle of Britain and Group Captain of my heart!
♡ Rupert Brooke. Kiiind of seems like a terrible person, but he's my favorite poet and LORD what a face. It would be a very complicated relationship (me: Jewish, him: into dudes), but oh, what a time would be had!
I am going through this list and it has dawned on me that I have a Very Specific Type...très intéressant!
Also, I am super super attracted to WWII-era JFK, but the question is who I would consider a good lay, and tragically JFK did not make the cut. EVERYONE says Kennedy when the dinner table gets a lil sloshed and starts asking which president you'd smash, but he's a terrible choice! The man would last thirty seconds until that damn back of his gave out, and then you'd be trapped underneath him a la Elaine Benes when she got crushed by her mattress from The Lumbar Yard.

Henry ‘Chips’ Channon: The Diaries (Vol. 1), 1918-38, entry for 10th April 1923
Tuesday 10th April
Motored with Paul of Serbia and Lady Cimmie Mosley¹ to Chichester for Lady Doris Gordon-Lennox’s² wedding. The groom is a horsey creature called Clare Vyner³ who strangely looks and lisps like a parish priest. The town was crowded with cheering people and bedecked with flags; the cathedral packed with locals with the Mayor and Corporation in full robes and with ‘fashionables’ from London. Paul was rather triste and thoughtful as he has wanted to marry Doris for years; it would have been a most disastrous alliance and I did my best to prevent it. His favourite hymn was played, by accident or design?? The Duke of York arrived with Elizabeth, her first really public appearance since her engagement. Afterwards we went to Goodwood House where we were recieved by the old Duke of Richmond.⁴ There were many presents but I looked more at the Van Dycks. It is extraordinary how Stuart they look these Gordon-Lennoxes.⁵
1. Cynthia Blanche Curzon (1898-1933), second daughter of Lord Curzon and his first wife, Mary Victoria Leiter (1870-1906), of Chicago. Lady Cynthia (as she became on her father’s advancement to an earldom in 1911) married in 1920 Oswald Ernald ‘Tom’ Mosley (1896-1980), who succeeded his father as 6th Bt in 1928. Mosley was Conservative and then Independent MP for Harrow from 1918 to 1924, failed to beat Neville Chamberlain in Birmingham in 1924, but became Labour MP for Smethwick from 1926 to 1931. He then founded his own party and became leader of the British Union of Fascists. His pursuit of fascist doctrine in the 1930s made him in equal parts a figure of fear and ridicule. He was interned during the Second World War with his second wife, Diana Guinness (née Mitford) (1910-2003), who had been his mistress, and whom he married in 1936 in Goebbels’ house in Berlin, with Hitler in attendance.
2. Lady Doris Hilda Gordon-Lennox (1896-1980), daughter of the Earl of March, who succeeded his father in 1928 as 8th Duke of Richmond and Gordon; married Clare George Vyner (né Compton) (1894-1989) in 1923.
3. Vide supra.
4. Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox (1845-1928), by courtesy Lord Settrington until 1860 and Earl of March until 1903, when he succeeded his father as 7th Duke of Richmond and Lennox and 2nd Duke of Gordon.
5. The dukedom was created in 1675 for the bastard son of King Charles II with his mistress, Louise de Kérouallie.

Avid Reader is the memoir of Robert Gottlieb, who was a New York publishing bigwig in the second half of the twentieth century. Obviously he read huge numbers of new books as they were coming out. And then as now, so much stuff was published that a lot of good books were quickly forgotten after their moment in the sun.
I’ve been keeping a list of novels that Gottlieb enthuses about but I had never heard of (or the author is famous for one book and he’s raving about a different one). He has really wide-ranging tastes, so this list has a little bit of everything. Sometimes he doesn’t even mention the genre, just how good the book was.
It will probably take me years to get round to all these, if ever.
If anyone’s looking for a reading project, may I present to you: The Avid Reader incomplete list of neglected novels
Niccolo Tucci, Before My Time (autobiographical novel by a writer who left fascist Italy - praised by Dorothy Parker)
Sybille Bedford, A Legacy (about German aristocrats - Nancy Mitford loved this one)
Rona Jaffe, The Best of Everything (young women juggling career and life in 50s New York, sounds a bit like a pre-women’s-lib Sex and the City)
Sylvia Ashton-Warner, Spinster (autobiographical novel by a New Zealand teacher trying to make school better for her Maori pupils)
Mordecai Richler, Barney’s Version
Bruce Jay Friedman, Stern
Jetta Carleton, The Moonflower Vine (an American farming family with a secret)
Robert Crichton, The Secret of Santa Vittoria (villagers try to outwit Nazis in WWII)
Chaim Potok, The Chosen (two Jewish boys growing up in Brooklyn)
Charles Portis, True Grit (source novel for the Western film)
John Cheever, Bullet Park (“dark and obscure”)
Lisa Alther, Kinflicks
Ross Macdonald (crime writer, no specific title was mentioned)
William Wharton, Birdy
Dorothy Dunnett, British writer of historical fiction, The Game of Kings (start of a series) or King Hereafter (standalone)
Joseph Heller, Something Happened
L G Buchheim, The Boat (translated from German, source novel for the film Das Boot)
Tom Tryon, The Other (psychological horror)
Robert Stone, A Flag for Sunrise
Evan Connell, Mr Bridge

Books: Sunday Times bestselling author Dawn O'Porter returns with Cat Lady

Books: Sunday Times bestselling author Dawn O'Porter returns with Cat Lady
Dawn O’Porter
HarperCollins, £18.99 (ebook £8.99)
Can people love their pets more than their spouses? It’s a question easily answered in Dawn O’Porter’s witty, acerbic and tender story, which begins when Mia – businesswoman, second wife and cat lover – attends a pet bereavement group, even though her cat Pigeon is still very much alive. As the tale unfolds, we find Mia married to Tristan and looking after his son, while his ex-wife Belinda – mother of the boy – invades their space like a wasp you can’t swat away. As Mia negotiates bitchiness both at home and at work, her one constant is her devoted cat, in whom she seeks solace when life gets too much. When her world starts to close in, Mia can voice her true feelings to the pet bereavement group, who share their own heartbreaks and, of course, love of animals. It’s beautiful and brutal, as caustic comedy rubs shoulders with the grief and desolation experienced by anyone who has ever loved – and lost – a pet. You’ll lap it up.

Darling
India Knight
Fig Tree, £14.99 (ebook £9.99)
India Knight isn’t treading new ground with her latest book – instead, Darling is a retelling of Nancy Mitford’s 1945 novel The Pursuit Of Love. In the beginning, we meet the Radletts – an eccentric family with a former rockstar as the patriarch, who’s set on his children and niece avoiding the same vices he did. They live a wholesome, technology-less life, but it’s clear this can’t last for long – particularly as we follow the gorgeous daughter Linda through life as a supermodel, then wife and beyond. While there is a colourful cast of characters, you can’t help but feel like the humour doesn’t quite land, and Knight perhaps hoped she was being funnier and more original than actually comes across.

Non-fiction
The Theory Of Everything Else
Dan Schreiber
Mudlark, £16.99 (ebook £9.99)
Did you know time travellers could have been responsible for sinking the Titanic, and that it may be possible to bring to the surface by filling its hull with ping-pong balls? Heard the one about the American intelligence operator who claimed to be able to prove plants display emotive stress, and when attached to lie detector tests can successfully pick out murder suspects in identity parades? That Novak Djokovic’s record-breaking tennis career may have been boosted by his pilgrimage to alien pyramids? That life on earth itself may have been accidentally cultivated by little green men who popped by for a picnic? Dan Schreiber collates these and plenty of other unsubstantiated rumours and bizarre myths, unveiling the often hapless band of investigators and conspiracy theorists who continue to pursue and perpetuate them. Amid the expected brigade of monster hunters and reptilian overlords, there are plenty that pique just enough possibility to prompt some interesting dinner party debates.

Children’s book of the week
Leila And The Blue Fox
Kiran Millwood Hargrave, illustrated by Tom de Freston
Orion Children’s Books, £12.99 (ebook £7.49)
As 12-year-old Leila stands at the border control counter waiting for the officer to approve her entry to Norway, she’s fighting back tears. Her journey to a city over 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle is fraught with uncertainty and inner turmoil about reuniting with a mother she has not seen since they escaped Damascus six years ago, but it is also ripe with excitement about the scientific project she is about to dive into headfirst. Kiran Millwood Hargrave and her illustrator husband Tom de Freston follow the acclaimed Julia And The Shark by conjuring up a stunning tale of the incredible tundra trek made by Miso – the blue fox of the novel’s title – and the emotional voyage made simultaneously by Leila and her mother. Themes of family, migration and the beauty and brutality of nature are presented in a beautiful book that will appeal to readers young and old.

‘...The Peaky Blinders bid farewell (for now) in a season finale which, after the flatness of previous episodes this season, fittingly regains its explosive swagger in the nick of time.
Packed with twists, aesthetic beauty and uncharacteristic Shelby sentimentality, the episode emphatically and emotionally concludes the decade-long journey from the “backstreets to the corridors of power”.
...A claustrophobic, eerie sense of finality runs throughout the episode - aided by gloomy, sombre aesthetics - alongside multiple tear-jerking moments...
Any concerns about the lack of action and the stop-start feel to the narrative during this series are decisively laid to rest throughout the 120 minutes in a blistering return to form, with three simultaneous battles unfolding.
Final cameos produced some fantastic parting quotables. “I refuse to f*** on Tory benches” says Tommy, in defiance of Diane Mitford’s - played to loathsome perfection by Amber Anderson - invitation to cross the floor. Drawled with characteristic gruffness, Alfie Solomons (Tom Hardy) invites Tommy to reconsider his emotional outpouring: “Tommy, if you are about to express profound emotion you might be better served expressing it to somebody who gives a f***”.
...the close of the episode represents a cyclical return to the essence of their characters...
...Now the Peaky Blinders can rest, until they’re awoken when it’s time to hit the big screen. This was an enthralling, charming send-off, a worthy final act to conclude a decade’s worth of glorious story-telling.’

Párizsi kiruccanás - a 197. epizód
Párizsi kiruccanás – a 197. epizód
