Summary:
When Neil was fourteen, his father caught up to them in Seattle and he got separated from Mary. Unfortunately, neither of them escaped unscathed, but they did escape despite all the odds. They manage to reunite at one of their emergency rendezvous and take off running.
That's where their luck ran out though because they only made it to California before Mary's injuries finally bested her. In the end, his mother couldn't go on but she made Neil promise to keep running because one of them had to make it. With no other choice, Neil burned her body, buried her ashes on the beach, and did what he had promised.
Then, impossibly, things went from bad to worse — After a month of just sort of drifting in his grief, Neil found out he was pregnant.

HWDDT: a pre-fic timeline for anyone curious
Neil and Mary left the USA at the same time as in canon - Neil was 10yrs old
They spent a week in UK before moving on.
10-12yrs old: 2-ish years in germanic countries (Austria, Germany, and Switzerland)
12yrs old: 8 months in France
(There are like 4 other countries dotted about in there but none of those were long stays. Then Mary was like 'f europe')
13yrs old: 10 months in Montreal
13-14yrs old: 5 months back in US before Mary's death
(Neil turned 14yrs old in January, Mary died in around February. Neil stayed in San Francisco until March, when he found out he was pregnant. Anastasia was born in October)
14-17yrs old: 3 years all over the US with no long stops
17-18yrs old: 1 year in Millport
