Seeking recommendations for the Trans Rights Readathon! I'm trying to fill out every bingo spot, and I'm struggling with a few different categories.
I still need Pacific Islander Author, Poetry, and Outside Your Comfort Zone (Poetry will automatically fill Outside Your Comfort Zone!). Does anyone have any recs for books that hit those? Limitations: ebooks only (I can't focus on audiobooks and hard copies won't arrive on time), I won't use Amazon, and, obviously, they have to be available for Australian buyers! Genre-wise, I vastly prefer SFFH (science fiction, fantasy, and horror).
Any recommendations appreciated! <3
Edit: Got what I need for the fills, thank you, all!

Willow speaking: as some of you know, I am a transgender woman. Right now trans rights are under attack across the globe. Many conservative politicians and demagogues don't want trans people to be safe. They don't want us to be visible. To those in power I say: too bad.
Trans visibility is important. Someone you know is trans. A trans person you know is afraid to come out to their parents, afraid to make friends, afraid to be bullied, or excommunicated. When I was young, every trans person I saw in the world was my hero. They had the courage to make themselves seen in a world that was hostile to them, to declare their real name in front of God and everybody.
Trans visibility is a celebration of the pillars of our society: freedom of information, the free exchange of ideas, and education. To oppose trans and queer visibility is to be on the side of censorship, to believe that ideas are corrupting, a thing to be controlled. I would not wish such a small-minded worldview on anyone.
The trans community cannot be silenced, not really. We will continue to live and love in full color. If you demand our silence, we will be louder. If you make us illegal, then we will rebel. There is nothing you can do to us that is worse than what we have already endured.
Trans rights are human rights, trans bodies are beautiful.
- Willow Payne

(via Trans Rights Readathon (March 20th - 27th, 2023))
The Trans Rights Readathon, will take place from March 20th to March 27th, 2023, and is a week-long event that encourages people to read books with transgender main characters, books by transgender authors, and raise funds for trans organizations that support and advocate for the trans community.
One of the great things about this event is that each creator has the opportunity to run their own mini-fundraisers and readathons where people can pledge, whether by page or by the book. Individuals are able to decide which organization (or individual) they would like to support.
People who can’t donate financially can ask friends and followers to pledge, or they can spread awareness while supporting trans books, creators, and authors! Posts can be made on all social media sites with the hashtag #TransRightsReadathon to get the word out.
Learn more by following the creator of this event, Sim Kern, on TikTok (@simkern) or check out my blog post!

Winter 1917. After years on the run from a dangerous cult, twenty-three-year-old Sasza and his father have established themselves among the Odonic Empire’s ruling class. But there’s a problem: Sasza is a vampire, and vampires aren’t supposed to get involved in human governance. What the aristocracy doesn’t know, after all, cannot hurt them. Unfortunately, Sasza is far more involved than a stealth vampire should be. Not only does he work to quell the rumors of the vampires’ responsibility for an unsolved massacre, his lover is also the pro-proletariat Ilya, the Empire’s Finance Minister, who tries to recruit Sasza into the same cult hunting him. Then—the Emperor declares war against the Vampire States. Diplomacy has failed. Sasza quickly learns that he will do anything to preserve peace–including giving in to the monstrosity he spent so many years concealing from even himself. nonbinary MC

A doxxed teen falls victim to violent assault and dishes out some harrowing retribution of their own. Over thirty Trans and Gender Nonconforming creators unite to voice their rage, and the rules of conventional Horror go out the f$%&ing window in this collection featuring murderous pleasure-bots; proselytizing zombies; acid-filled alien cops; science run amok; sorcerers, ghouls, cannibals...and that barely scratches the grave-dirt.
Blood from Stone by Bellamy Scott | ebook PWYW

For Sam, a rogue stag on a summer night takes his husband, his life, and his name in a single blow. As months of grief pass, he things he's begun to get used to his new reality, until an encounter with a childhood friend changes it all over again. BLOOD FROM STONE is a story of an old lady doing good deeds for bloody boys on the side of the road, of poisoned wine, and of a trans man Becoming Real.
Becoming Light by Riley Nash | ebook free
When people meet me, they see a bright faced, happy-go-lucky kindergarten teacher who will do anything to support his friends. Not everyone knows the struggle I’ve faced to become the man I am today.  Now it’s finally time for the gender-affirming surgery I’ve been dreaming of for years. But when an emergency leaves me without a caretaker, the only person who can take me in is my best friend’s aloof, reclusive, and incredibly sexy dad. The one who has no bedside manner and struggles to communicate. The one I’ve had a crush on for years. The deeper we see into each other’s worlds, the stronger the attraction gets. I’m not sure either of us can make it through the next four days without giving in. Trans man MC

TRANS RIGHTS READATHON 2024
(March 22-29, 2024)
Since people have gotten ahead of me on reading my queer monster short story collection for Trans Rights Readathon, I figure I ought to introduce it. Something's Not Right is a collection of stories featuring a diverse cast of human and non-human characters struggling with what society thinks is right. There are stories about transphobia, stories about trans love, stories about casual hot trans roommates who help you deal with your problems (dealing blood to vampires and witches); whatever bizarre relationship to queerness you could imagine, it's in there.
Anyone who can't afford a copy and/or can't get one at their local library is welcome to contact me directly for a free e-copy, no questions asked. I also have thousands of words of free fiction available on my website, including two explicit novelettes (Long Line and Band Girls) both of which include trans characters.
And a week's worth of personal trans recommendations from my top reads of the last couple of years, should you need it anytime:
Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters
Confessions of the Fox by Jordy Rosenberg
Females by Andrea Long Chu
When the Angels Left the Old Country by Sacha Lamb
The Third Person by Emma Grove
Other Ever Afters by Mel Gillman
decolonizing trans/gender 101 by b. binaohan

Alright, some more recommendations for the end of #TransRightsReadathon! Here are some standalones by trans authors I've enjoyed.  These books mostly fall under the sff umbrella except for Confessions of the Fox which is meta-historical fiction.
They are beautiful, heartfelt, creative explorations of humanity, of our drive for connection, self-understanding, love, and survival. So many of these books look at history, personal, and community, aaaand they are filled with complicated, lovable, engaging characters. All of these books gave me something from a soft place to rest to a new way of viewing the world we live in.
Many of these have trans characters as well, but not all of them. Most of these authors have other books that are also wonderful. Annnd as always there are so many other fabulous books by and about people who are trans.
One Last Stop by Casey McQuistion
An Unkindess of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon
Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi
Confessions of the Fox by Jordy Rosenberg
All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders
Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey
Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo
Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki
ID: a stack of 8 books on a teal background

"I've picked up an analogy in my years of public speaking. It's one of the ways I describe the trans experience to audiences of largely cis people. I ask them to imagine that they are a can of lentils. (Bear with me here.) So, there you are, chilling out. Doing what canned lentils do. Then someone comes along, opens the cupboard, picks you up, and slaps a label on you that says 'coconut milk'. Okay. You don't really know what to do. Obviously, you are not coconut milk - you know this intuitively But there's no way to prove your lentilness for certain, unless someone opens you up and peers inside. But they're sure going to be disappointed if they try to add you to a pina colada mix! The trans experience isn't the process of lentils trying to become coconut milk, or vice versa. It's just a matter of changing the label on the outside, so people know what's inside. Sometimes to change that label, people go through surgeries, or hormones. Sometimes they just get a haircut and make a Facebook post. All it really takes is for people to just believe them when they say, 'I'm not coconut milk, and I never was. And next time, can you ask me before you try and label me?'"

Support the #transrightsreadathon this week!
Willow and I are supporting this week's Trans Rights Readathon and hope you will, too!
Please read a book by a trans author and consider supporting a trans charity as well! Here are three we recommend:
Trans Lifeline https://translifeline.org/
Transgender Law Center https://transgenderlawcenter.org/
Mermaids (UK) https://mermaidsuk.org.uk/
I'm re-rereading one of my favorite books, All The Birds In The Sky by Charlie Jane Anders, which I highly recommend to everyone. And my family (including my daughter's roommate and boyfriend) are recommending a few other books we love:  Dana Simpson's Phoebe and Her Unicorn series, As The Crow Flies by Melanie Gillman, Nimona by ND Stevenson, and Glory (Image Comics) which was illustrated by Sophie Campbell (and our copy of which has either disappeared or is out on loan).
If you're looking for books to read you can start with those or search the hashtag on social media instead. There are lots of folks posting great recommendations out there and talking about their books, and of course you should always ask your favorite librarian and bookseller for a recommendation. (Charlie Jane Anders even posted a list of some of her favorite trans/non-binary books in her newsletter this morning to get your started.)
Happy reading!
-Gene
