Is This Turquoise Real?
youtube
For centuries, turquoise has been regarded as one of the most desirable jewels in the world. Its common association in the United States is with the Southwestern desert and the indigenous people that live there. It would appear that turquoise jewellery is timeless. It's common to find black "matrix" veining among the blues and greens. The price of a good or service can vary widely based on factors such as its colour, quality, and treatments. Knowing exactly what you're receiving when you buy turquoise is essential.
The question "Is this turquoise real?" arises frequently. This is probably the simplest question you can think of, right? But there are complexities when working with turquoise.
Among the five recognised types of turquoise, five have their own legal definitions.
All-Natural Turquoise. This turquoise has not been processed in any way. Its inherent hardness and beauty make it suitable for nothing more than mining, cutting, and polishing. Estimates place the percentage of natural turquoise in circulation at less than 3%. This variety of turquoise is the most sought-after by collectors.
Turquoise necklace is stunning, but this specimen was too soft to be used as a jewellery stone until it was stabilised. Therefore, it was subjected to a treatment that hardened it. Typically, a clear epoxy resin is injected into it under high pressure. Due of the resin, turquoise can be carved, polished, and enhanced in durability. Infusing vaporised silica into the turquoise is a newer method that has been developed. The majority of turquoise sold today has been treated to prevent it from chipping or cracking. It ought to be cheaper than entirely natural stuff. It is still genuine turquoise and may be made into lovely, reasonably priced jewellery, despite being of lower value.
The colour of this treated turquoise has been boosted, yet it is still the same gentle turquoise that has undergone the stabilisation process described above. When working with extremely pale or weakly pigmented materials, it is common practise to add a dye to the epoxy. In most cases, the hues will have a synthetic appearance. We expect it to be far cheaper than both natural and stabilised turquoise.
"Reconstituted Turquoise" is very low quality turquoise that has been reduced to a powder, saturated with epoxy glue, coloured, and then crushed into blocks. After the blocks are prepared, they are sliced and polished into gemstones for jewellery. It stands to reason that these gems would be relatively affordable. False turquoise containing no actual turquoise. They could be made of a synthetic material like plastic, or they could be a different stone that has been coloured to look like turquoise. To achieve a similar aesthetic, howlite, a common, naturally white stone that is porous and takes colour well, is frequently utilised.
The methods used to treat and imitate turquoise are developing rapidly, making it increasingly difficult to determine whether or not a given stone is genuine or has been treated. Fake or treated stones can be easily identified by someone with experience in the field. If you look at enough authentic turquoise, you'll start to recognise fakes for what they are. An authentic piece of turquoise will appear waxy, rather than overly shiny. Dyed nuggets can be identified by their uneven coloration, with darker patches on the high points and paler sections. Check the hole while purchasing beads. It's not real if the inside is white. However, it is not uncommon for professionals to be taken in by a lie. Always make sure you do business with a reliable vendor. If it's not natural, treated, or an imitation, they should say so and back it up with a money-back guarantee.
Things To Consider When Buying Turquoise Beads For Jewelry Making
Tumblr media
Many designers of fine jewellery swear by turquoise beads because of their timeless beauty and widespread appeal. This is due to the wide variety of possible bracelet, necklace, and ring designs that may be achieved with these beads. Trading, making jewellery, and decorating with turquoise are just a few of the various uses for this beautiful stone. The versatility of their colour means that they can be set in a wide range of materials. These beads look great with any precious metal, including white gold, yellow gold, sterling silver, stainless steel, or even platinum.
It is traditional to celebrate a fifth wedding anniversary by donning turquoise jewellery, which also happens to be the birthstone for December. Due to the strong demand for turquoise beads used in jewellery creation and the relatively expensive cost of the precious stone itself, careful evaluation of the beads' quality is important prior to purchase. The following is advice on how to go about acquiring turquoise beads for use in jewellery.
Varieties Obtainable
You can choose from three distinct styles. Take a look at this to see what I mean.
Blue gems are exceptionally hardy and can appear in pastel tones. There is also a choice of very dark colours. Beads like this are especially expensive because the Nevada mine that supplied the blue gem turquoise is currently closed.
Beads made from Kingman turquoise, mined in Kingman, Arizona, are distinguished by their dark veining. They come in many different colours.
Sleeping Beauty Turquoise Beads are the Most Uniform in the Industry. The shades of blue run the gamut from pale to medium, and the prices for these beads reflect that.
Description of Care
The treatment that turquoise beads have received is another factor to think about when purchasing them for jewelry-making. The following are examples of such things:
Jewelery made with turquoise beads that have been dyed have a more vibrant colour and a more consistent tint.
Reconstitute - some craftspeople collect the shards of the stone, grind them into a powder, and then reassemble them into huge beads.
Applying wax and oil to a painting can make the colours pop. A stone of lesser grade may sweat and lose its colour if subjected to this treatment, hence it is reserved for more valuable stones.
Possible Discounts
Because of their lack of transparency, the stones used to make jewellery with turquoise beads are not faceted. Beads and cabochons of varying sizes and shapes are common forms of artisanal cutting. They come in a wide variety of shapes, including ovals, rounds, hearts, flowers, and more.
