🌻RISE, SUNFLOWERS🌻 MONTANKA DOLLS by Ann Wieler Natalia (Red) Yulia (Blue) ***READ MORE ON MONTANKA DOLLS BELOW... Currently up at @lunarienne until August 14th! ***CLOSING RECEPTION: Sat. Aug 13th, 5-8pm*** Thank You Ann Wieller for contributing these hand made traditional Ukrainian dolls to our project! Motanka Motanka dolls (Ukrainian мотанка, from мотати - to tangle/spool) are a type of traditional amulet dolls made in Ukraine. They were a part of folk culture and beliefs in magic, made of wound fabric without the use of a needle or other sharp objects, so as not to "not poke/hurt fate" and traditionally had no facial features although the faces were sometimes decorated with a cross instead. The cross patterns woven on the face are thought to have represented the sun during pagan times and, later, were connected to Christianity. The absence of facial features may have been an attempt to ward off bad spirits or curses (i.e. the evil eye).  Motanka dolls were made for specific purposes or to fulfill wishes/tasks of various sorts such as guarding the family or a prosperous marriage. Nowadays motanka dolls are regaining popularity as interest grows in learning about Slavic folk culture; they are often featured as cultural artifacts during educational and ethnographic workshops to illustrate a rich aspect of our heritage.  These motankas are more modern although they retain elements of traditional craftsmanship, like the winding of fabric and the cross designs on the faces. Their clothing is made from fabrics, laces, and ribbons that are sewn in places, and the dolls themselves have some modern rebel flair that also celebrates the resilience, innovation, and determination of Ukraine and her people.  These dolls along with the works of 27 artists are currently available at @lunarienne Please visit @lunarienne located on 3318 22nd st. (@ Valencia) or www.lunarienne.com for purchase. Gallery Hours: Friday: 3 - 6p Saturday: 12 - 6p Sunday: 12 - 4p All proceeds from these pieces go to @heartsforukraine.us #heartsforukraine #lunariennegallery #lunarienne #risesunflowers #annwieler #montanka #montankadolls #natalia #yulia (at Luna Rienne Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChJHk5Irkxq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I am heartbreakingly in awe of the strength of the Ukrainian people.
Some things that really stuck out to me from the coverage I've watched so far:
Ukrainian officials requested that a no fly zone be placed over Ukrainian territory and Russia has not just been bombing military targets, they have been bombing areas in cities filled with civilians - they have shelled multiple Ukrainian nurseries, kindergartens and an orphanage, killing numerous children
Ukraine's UN ambassador told his Russian counterpart that "there's no purgatory for war criminals, they go straight to hell"
A Ukrainian soldier went onto a bridge during battle to detonate a bomb on it knowing he would die in the process
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president has refused offers to evacuate him and is insisting on staying above ground in the capitol (Kyiv) which is currently being bombed and invaded by Russian troops. Russia claims that they are willing to have peace-talks if Ukraine surrenders - Zelenskyy (rightfully, in my opinion) has refused
It is estimated that 100,000 Ukrainians have fled across the border to neighbouring countries so far. Polish citizens have been offering to drive them where they need to go and also offering them places to stay. Women and children have had to leave male loved ones behind at the border as Ukrainian men between the ages of 18 and 60 have been barred from leaving the country in order that they may be conscripted into the Ukrainian army
Russian soldiers on a warship told Ukrainian soldiers stationed on a Ukrainian island (Snake Island) that they were about to invade the island and told the soldiers there to surrender and you could hear the Ukrainian soldiers over the radio saying "so this is it" because they knew they were going to die and then they told the Russian warship to go fuck themselves
There is a video of a Ukrainian woman going up to Russian soldiers and telling them they are cursed and offering them sunflower seeds (the national flower of Ukraine) to put in their pockets so that when they die on Ukrainian soil at least sunflowers will grow
I am so sorry to every Ukrainian for what you are going through. Putin is a despicable man. I am deeply impressed and humbled by the strength your people are showing - I don't know that I could ever be that brave.

Ukrainian Folk Magic Notes 🌻
Tumblr media
These are notes that I have compiled from my own discoveries as I tap into my Ukrainian roots; these connect to old family recipes, superstitions, and beliefs. My interpretation of these correspondences may not be similar to all practitioners and people involved with Ukrainian diaspora, but it resonates with my own experience and my family.
Sunflowers
Protective flowers, grow them around your property to ward off spirits that may have been sent after you by spiteful neighbors.
They represent peace, and should be gifted to people who you have wronged as an apology. To give someone the symbol of peace allows you to heal and prevent the argument from living in your home and poisoning your thoughts and emotions.
You can also gift sunflowers to expecting parents to assure that the child is filled with joy while still in the womb.
Beet Root
Important for borscht, make sure you handle your beet roots with respect and love, from seed to sprout to harvest, borscht is served at celebratory gatherings and for funeral wakes. The energy you put into the beet root should be full of good thoughts and unity for your family. Tainting the beet root with anger makes the soup too sour.
Beetroot should be eaten to cure hangovers.
The juice of the beetroot can be used as an alternative to blood in magic that requires it.

Motanka Dolls
Dolls fashioned out of clothing of a deceased loved one.
By making the doll with the clothing of a deceased loved one, you are inviting your ancestor to protect your home and grant your family good health and fertility.
The dolls are very protective, especially for the children of the home.
They should never have a face, giving a face to the doll invites souls to inhabit it.
These dolls are gifted to children, who help shape the emotion and personality of the doll through their playtime.
When the children no longer want to play with the motanka, you should place it somewhere in the home to continue to guard the family.
There are many different types of motanka, some are given for weddings, and funerals.
On the topic of health
A lot of Ukrainian folk work and kitchen habits revolve around making sure that good health is brought into the home. Health is one of the most valued things in Ukrainian households; Ukrainian families have experienced centuries of famine and food-related abuse caused by outside governments and influences. (Please read up on the tragic story of Holodomor if you want to understand more. That is the famine that urged my great-grandparents to leave Ukraine and come to America.)
Food is not wasted, not even the scraps. Throwing away food throws away your fortune and your health. Unless it is rotten and unable to be eaten, we are told to try and incorporate it into another meal or offer it up to the souls that can no longer eat.
One should never curse the health of another in the community, or else your own health will be cursed.
Spoken word
The most powerful magic is the spoken word, especially prayer.
The words of children are especially powerful. Children are believed to be conduits for messages from the higher powers.
Never say something that you do not mean; you will manifest situations that you do not want.
Always see the weight in your words.
And NEVER insult your grandmother.

Keep in mind that Russia’s government is trying to dehumanize Ukrainians! DO NOT BELIEVE THEM, THIS IS ONE OF THEIR TACTICS TO TRY TO GET EVERYONE TO NOT HELP UKRAINE. Keep in mind the actual things Ukrainians have done, like help wounded Russian soldiers or sacrifice themselves to slow the Russian advance on Kyiv or try to block Russian tanks from coming in with their own body (and is thankfully safe) or- you get the point, right?
I’m sorry I don’t know much Ukrainian, but I know some of the basics. But one sentence we need to use right now (other than “Слава Україні! Героям слава!” (Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!) and telling Russian soldiers that they should have sunflower seeds [Ukraine’s national flower] in their pockets so that when they die they contribute something and are cursed) is “Русский военный корабль, иди на хуй.” (Russian warship, go fuck yourself)
Please stay strong and stay safe!
