This is an appreciation post for non-native English fanfiction writers. I respect you all so much.

I respect that you might be from a country that doesn't speak English at all. You might be picking up different phrases and spellings from US English, some from RP, some just a random international mix. Or you moved to an English speaking country late and even if you speak English fluently, your brain still operates in your primary language. Maybe English lessons in your country sucked (hi, my fellow post-Socialist states of central and east Europe!) and you just learned through trial and error.

I admire that you keep writing even if you get stuck on a phrase for 30 mins because you have a perfect saying, but it's in your first language and you can't just translate it, so you end up searching for an English equivalent that just doesn't fully cover what you want. You struggle to keep the spelling consistent because there's no international standard and so you randomly switch between "colour" and "flavor" and then have to correct it again and again.

Maybe your first language doesn't have the same sentence structure like English and when you read your finished fic, it just doesn't sound right. Maybe your parents or friends speak to you when you're writing and you switch to your first language and the sentences become even wonkier.

(special shoutout to my fellow suffering Slavs and others whose languages don't have articles. Even if we know the rules, we sometimes just toss all "the"s, "an"s and "a"s into the text and pray they land correctly)

You might struggle because those events in the US history or in the Anglophone world in general that shaped a whole generation mean nothing to you. How do you keep your characters realistic if you don't know? And don't get me started on measuring systems. "What the hell are inches," you may weep as you google all those conversions.

And punctuation? Commas in all the places that seem so wrong to you but they're apparently right?

And yet you decide to struggle with all of that to show love to your fandoms. You conquer your fear of sounding wrong and being ridiculed to share your thoughts with all the fans. Consuming media in another language is difficult enough, but creating something? That's so much more.

So to all of you who struggle with all or some of this like I do - I see you. And I want you to know you are awesome.

Of teeth and conspiracies

Something’s wrong with Eddie. Something’s definitely wrong, Steve realizes halfway through the movie they’ve been watching. It’s strangely quiet, and it takes Steve a while to put a finger on it, until he notices the large bowl of Eddie’s favorite chips on the coffee table is left untouched. Normally, Eddie would be stuffing himself with those by the fistfuls, forcing Steve to turn up the volume because he cannot hear a thing the characters are saying with the constant crunching going on next to him. 

“Hey Eds, you okay?” He inquires, poking at his boyfriend’s hip with his foot. 

“Uh… yeah, why?” 

“You haven't touched your chips.”

Eddie shrugs. “Just not hungry tonight. Had a big dinner.” And then he grins. “Don’t you worry your pretty head over me, I’m fine, Stevie.” 

But Steve knows that grin. It’s Eddie’s signature ‘I’m lying, but I’m gonna be cute and hopefully you won’t notice’ grin. 

Steve’s suspicions are confirmed two days later, when they’re having lunch together at their usual diner, and Eddie keeps slowly chewing on his burger with a frankly miserable frown. 

“Your food okay?” Steve asks. “You look like that burger is, I don’t know, a week past its due date.”

“Yeah, it’s fine,” Eddie assures him. Which is already a tell. Burgers are never fine to Eddie. Burgers are amazing and delicious and better than sex, which is something Steve tries not to take offense at. But not fine.

Eddie reaches for a fry, puts it between his teeth, and it crunches - of course it does, it’s the reason they always pick this place, for the extra crunchy fries. And Eddie winces, dropping the fry and grabbing his cheek. 

Okay, that explains everything. Steve raises his eyebrows. 

“Eddie? Do you have a toothache?”

1k followers...how?

Well, it's here. When I started thinking about writing Steddie drabbles and fanfiction in September 2022, I had no idea it would become such a huge hobby of mine. I also had no idea there would be 1k of you willing to read my thoughts, drabbles and constant rambling.

So, from the bottom of my heart - thank you. Thank you for every like, comment and reblog, thank you for all your tags that I read religiously. Thank you even if you just read and don't interact. I'm still incredibly happy that you found my work worth reading.

BF: So happy I didn't have breakfast. I'd throw up.

BF: Hm, not so bad. Maybe your bed will fit under my bed. Me: Our bed. Comrade.

The bed is safely at home, we're alive and the snark is too.

Unity War ramblings

Ok, so a different sort of thing to what I usually post here but my Players watch all my other social media accounts and don’t know about this one. So I’m running a Dark Heresy Tabletop RPG campaign for Warhammer40k.

It’s called Unity War taking place before the God-Emperor of Mankind was even the God-Emperor and back before he was even conquering the stars. It is between the times when The Long night ate the human empire and before the findings of the Primachs it was an age undreamed of when the Emperor strode upon Terra’s soil seeking to wear the golden laurel of Earth upon a troubled brow. It is in this time that My Thunder warriors (My Player characters) will fight this is the days of High adventure.

A High adventure I’d like to share with all of you.

My PCs consist of 3 thunder warriors (The Proto-space marines designed to conquer Earth) and 1 Custodes (The Emperor’s personal bodyguards.) All are genetically engineered and BadAss Ill put up some pics. I’ll start by introducing the PCs.

First is Sergent Sarge, the Team Leader, and determined Shot-gunner. Claims you don’t need to know anything about him besides his rank, a stone-cold Cigar-smoking dude who is medically required to wear sunglasses all the time, he’s got sensitive eyes. Thinking of going, Cowboy. Yeehaw

Glyndur The Shark of Chosin the Paladin in the Smoke. A Custodes looking to make a name for himself, Melee killing machine who puts landmines on the front of his shield. Talks like Hunter S Thompson (Look up fear and loathing in las Vegas). Every great deed he does grants him a new name and while he is free to ignore all orders he trusts Sarge’s orders. Also, his pike is also a gun (RWBY came in somewhere)

Berthold Von Andrechs AKA Bert. Note he does not look like a Sloth with a Cigar. Mostly he’s a dude with eagle scars and a fuck huge gun. He’s the team's heavy weapons expert with the huge delete button for a gun. He’s a depressed figure who still fights to give people a better life even though he’s sure it’ll fail; a True hero. He’s cursed with really really REALLY bad luck and an evil Eagle pursues him causing the bad luck. All about those Hearts and Minds.

Hadrianus aka Hadrian the Mad Doctor. The smart dude of the crew with strange bouts of berserker fury. Newest to the group, face made full of scars and missing his nose. Smart dude with bad habits.

I'm not saying that I don't like the way S1 of ST went, but I'm thinking about the possibilities if it wasn't Barb, the obvious outcast in the group, who went missing.

What if it was Carol? Would Tommy also become a decent person and get involved in the Upside Down mess trying to rescue her? Would he blame Steve? And vice versa, what if Tommy got taken? Would Carol maybe become kinder, perhaps closer with Barb and Nancy?

But the most intriguing option for me is - what if it was Nancy? Imagine everyone going inside, Barb's hand starts bleeding again and Steve accompanies her to make sure her wound is okay, that it doesn't get infected. Nancy waits by the pool, trying to clean droplets of Barb's blood...and she gets attacked by Demogorgon.

Because what would happen then? Would Barb and Steve blame each other or learn to cooperate? Would they form an unlikely friendship, nothing based on attraction or popularity, but an alliance for the same goal - to rescue Nancy? Would they start as reluctant allies and progress to real friends, being able to lean on each other? And how would Nancy's family deal with the stakes? Would Mr. Wheeler still be allowed to be so disinterested or would he step up, become the person they all need?

All I mean is - Barb was a cheap option, no one except for Nancy looked for her and she was an outsider in the group from the beginning. The stakes would have been higher with other characters.

(but it's mostly me being disappointed that we couldn't see a potential cooperation between Steve and Barb, between the protector of the group and its conscience)

Some people claim that in long term relationships, you can tell what the other person is thinking.

Those people are filthy liars. To illustrate:

Me to my boyfriend: You've washed your hair.

Him: Yes. I've used the...pschhht and vzzzzht.

Me: The...what?

Him: You know. The...hair mask?

Me: Is that the pschhht or vzzzzht?

Him: Vzzzzht.

Me: And the pschhht?

Him: The thing. In the...tube.

Me: What tube?

Him: The squeezy tube.

Me: *thinking about cca 20 tubes or various shampoos, conditioners, masks and other hair stuff in our bathroom because neither of us has the dedication to finish something* Not helpful.

We're staring at each other, unable to identify the pschhhht.

Me: Is it good for your hair?

Him: YES. That is what I came to tell you.

This is what communication looks like more than 5 years into a relationship. Don't be fooled by the romantic nonsense.
