After a marathon of bargaining over the course of more than 24 consecutive hours this week Canada’s largest public sector union Unifor reached a tentative deal with Ford Motor Company. The new deal will cover more than 5,600 workers at Ford’s Canadian facilities in Ontario and Alberta. “What a time to fight for working people right now,” said Unifor President Lana Payne in a press conference on Tuesday announcing the deal. “And for unions, you’ve just got to stick at it right now and take advantage of the moment that we’re in and try to make sure that we’re making generational gains for workers because that is what collective bargaining can do. It can change lives; and we believe we will change some lives with this agreement.”

The strike by the United Auto Workers union isn’t the only labor problem that automakers, and US car buyers, need to worry about. Unifor, the union that represents autoworkers in Canada, is preparing to go on strike against Ford on Monday night. Ford isn’t speaking about how it sees the contract negotiations going but Unifor President Lana Payne told CNN on Saturday that the two sides are far apart, especially on financial issues, saying the union has rejected the first two offers from Ford. “We’re not close at all. There’s a lot of work to get done to get an agreement by midnight Monday,” Payne said. Unlike the UAW, which has spelled out its initial bargaining demands, including a 40% pay raises over the life of the contract, neither Unifor nor Ford are saying where they stand on wage increase offers, but the union is looking for substantial wage hikes, pension improvements, as well as job security guarantees as the auto industry invests billions in its plans to switch from traditional gasoline powered cars to EVs in the years ahead – all issues at the center of negotiations between the UAW and the automakers it is striking.

we're getting shit we never thought we'd see again, like COLA and an end to the no-strike clause. we're not just ending tiers but getting "subsystem" work put under the national agreement instead of some shady ass not-quite-third-party situation.

we haven't even walked the big profit assemblies out yet. the threat of walking Arlington out made GM flinch hard.

#we have dunces who want to be on strike and refuse to accept this is an effective strategy #but they're also the kind of people who would happily vote yes on a contract equivalent to a day old ham sandwich and a flat soda #GM has made it clear they will need to be dragged kicking and screaming into a good contract #from the sounds of it they're not playing nice with Unifor either #the Unifor deadline is monday night and if the Canadians go on strike Flint is wide open for a walk out #GM might regret being bullheaded by the time this is over
