Remembering that time in middle school when I was trying to get one of my friends to read the Waterfire Saga series and was showing her some fanart I had found online of the character. Upon seeing a drawing of Mahdi, she immediately went Mahdi? More like Ma-hotty!
And I was so offended by this for some reason. I was just like "No he's actually a really interesting character!" like those were contradictory statements or something
In other news I probably should have really I'm ace a lot sooner

Personally, I think that if you liked acotar, you'd like the WaterFire Saga by Jennifer Donnelly
If you liked the action, adventure, trials, anxiety, and excitement of acotar, WaterFire is a great series to read.
It's more of a Young Adult Fantasy than it is New Adult Fantasy, but don't let that discourage you from reading. The author is a seasoned writer and has been writing for decades.
WaterFire begins as a coming of age story following Serafina Merrovingia, Principessa of Miromara. A 16 year old mermaid preparing to begin her journey towards ascending the throne of Miromara in the Mediterranean Sea. Her trial to prove she is the best fit to one day take the throne of Miromara is ruined when an enemy force attacks. Serafina is forced to run, despite wanting to stay for her parents and betrothed who are left to the hands of the enemy.
Alone until she manages to find her best friend, Neela, Princess of Matali, Sera is a pampered princess who is thrown out into the open ocean with enemies hunting her down and no clue how she will save her Kingdom.
I won't go on by spoiling anymore, but it's a wonderful story of growth, adventure, self discovery, and self love. The story goes on to follow five other merls[mermaids] who join Serafina in saving the entire Realm of Mer. Each of the six main characters has their own journey of self discovery which helps them grow as individuals and as a group.
It's a story if betrayal, revenge, sacrifice, and suffering, but it is also a story of trust, pushing past your own limits, hope, and love.
There is a romantic subplot for at least three of our main characters. All of which are strictly romantic and not explicit since the characters are all underage. Plus, it really wouldn't fit into any of the books.
The series did well to include characters from different backgrounds, races, and ethnicities. Ex: Neela, Yazeed, and Mahdi are all from the Indian Ocean. Ava is from the Freshwaters of the Amazon River in South America. Astrid is from Ondalina in the Arctic Ocean.
All of the main characters are girls and all of them are so uniquely different. They all have their flaws, but their flaws help them connect with each other and grow.
There is also a great connection between the human world and the mer world. Modern day humans are fighting to save the oceans from pollution and overfishing while the Mer are fighting to stop an ancient evil from destroying both worlds.
I think my favorite part of the entire series has to be how each main character has their own journey and goal, but it contributes to the main goal which is to unite and save the oceans.
I can't even begin to describe each trial and challenge. There are so many, but they all contribute to helping all of the characters learn and grow.
Trigger Warnings before going into these books: Violence, death of parents, coup attempt/success, war, war camps/concentration camps, confinement, assassination attempts/success, near death experience for many characters, gore, minor eating disorder, minor fatphobia(book 1), body horror(book 3), genocide(book 3), medical content, abuse, and self sacrifice.
Since it's YA, hardly any of these warnings go into great detail. The major warnings to prepare for are Death, Genocide, and War.
This is a lot of information to take in, but I personally think the books are worth reading at least once. I think I liked acotar so much because it reminded me of the WaterFire Saga. I have a friend who also read WaterFire first and agreed that acotar reminds her of the series.
All of the four books are between 300 and 400 pages. And while I wish Jennifer had gone on the write more[especially with how Sea Spell ended], the series is complete.
I'm also super desperate to get this fandom more attention. It would be a great book to movie adaptation. Disney already owns the books, so they could technically do a movie series👀

Spoilers for Sea Spell from the Waterfire Saga
Tumblr media
[ID: A digital illustration of Astrid Kolfinnsdottir holding the recorder Becca made for her. Her finger pads cover the holes and the mouthpiece is posed before her lips, as if she's about the play. Her eyes are fixed on the instrument.]
I feel like there was a huge missed opportunity when Kolfinn broke Astrid's recorder, and Orfeo just removed Astrid's singing difficulty. It would have been really cool to explore how magic made by instruments differ from sung magic!
While Astrid was able to do some camo spells with her recorder, I always wondered what impact her inability to sing the spells' lyrics impacting her songcasting. How much do lyrics matter in songcasting? For that matter, did Astrid have to tune her recorder? Do all mermaids need to worry about tuning when songcasting? Did Neria give the mermaids perfect pitch when she created them?
And although the recorder has the drawback of no lyrics, woodwinds generally allow for faster rhythms and articulations than song and, depending on the instrument, more range. Could Astrid compensate for her lack of lyrics with more complex rhythms or more dramatic pitch leaps? Could she create different magic with her complex rhythms and pitch leaps?
I'm definitely being too big of a nerd and overthinking this. I love the Waterfire Saga and Astrid's character's and thought they deserve more fanart, so I decided to be the change I want to see.

Dark Tide - Jennifer Donnelly
Tumblr media
In the third book of the series, the mermaids continue their search for the six talismans that will help them stop the evil forces intent on destroying the world: Ling combs the unexplored depths of the Abyss; Astrid braves a maelstrom; and Becca sneaks into the home of a dangerous wind spirit.
I definitely think this series suffers a bit from having Too Many Characters which makes it confusing to keep track of who is where and what they're doing. But overall I'm still enjoying the adventure and watching the girls overcome their insecurities and bond together.

Do you have a favorite novel, series, or any type of book? :3
Definitely not Warriors lmao
Hmm…. If I’d have to pick, I’d say the Waterfire Saga by Jennifer Donnelly. It’s a political drama that includes a lot of mystic elements, really cool world building, prophecies, some solid romances, and — the best part lol — it’s about mermaids!!
Tumblr media
I genuinely highly recommend these books, they’re really good!!
Some honorable mentions:
The Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas (hands-down my favorite stand alone book)
Red Moon Rising by Peter Moore (a book I haven’t read in.. y e a r s, but one that’s really stuck with me throughout it all regardless)
Neros: Prophecy In Motion by Sven Lundberg (I met the author once when I was a lot younger completely by chance. He signed my book, and gave me some encouragement when I told him I wanted to be an author just like him someday.. I still look back at what he wrote in my book sometimes ^^)
The Pegasus Series by Kate O’Hearn (if you like Percy Jackson, I cannot recommend this series enough!!)

10-28-2022 rant incoming....
FUCK 'THE LITTLE MERMAID' REMAKE FR BRUH
WE KNOW THE STORY WE KNOW WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN yes, representation is cool and tbh I did think the design of her tail I saw in the trailer was neat and intricate BUT WE KNOW. THE DAMN. STORY. IF YOU WANT A STORY ABOUT MERMAIDS THAT REPRESENTS EVERYONE, HAS MAGIC, ROMANCE, MYSTERY, STRONG LEADS, AND ADVENTURE MAKE 'THE WATERFRE SAGA' INTO A MOVIE/SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!! COME FUCKING ON MAN
LOOK AT THIS-
youtube
THE ANIMATION THE DESIGNS THERE IS POTENTIAL HERE
youtube
A FUCKING BANGER OF A THEME
*SOMETHING NEW BECAUSE NOBODY REMEMBERS THE BOOKS *EXPLORING THE WORLD FROM THE MER-PEOPLES POV *CHARACTERS FEW HAVE SEEN BECAUSE, AGAIN, NOBODY REMEMBERS THE BOOKS I GUESS- * C A N N O N I C A L L Y D I V E R S E C H A R A C T E R S *GREAT WORLD BUILDING *EVERY BOOK WILL LEAVE YOU AT THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT *PLENTY OF TWISTS AND TURNS *AMAZING DESIGNS OF THE CHARACTERS AND THEIR WORLD
Tumblr media
LIKE COME ON MAN IDK ABOUT YA'LL, BUT I'VE WAITED ABOUT 8 YEARS FOR SOMETHING ANYTHING ON THIS SERIES AND WHEN THE TIME CAME TO MAKE A MERMAID-THEMED MOVIE EVERYONE SLEPT ON THIS
IT'S ALMOST MORE OFFENSIVE TO CONSTANTLY GO BACK AND RE-MAKE A BUNCH OF OLD MOVIES TO BE MORE "PolITiCALLY COrReCT" BY NOW DAYS STANDARDS BECAUSE BELEIVE IT OR NOT THERE WHERE THINGS GOING ON BEFORE THE YEAR 2020!!!!!! AND YEAH, SOME THINGS AGE BETTER THAN OTHERS THAT'S OBVIOUS BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH SOME THINGS IN THE PAST ARE WRONG BY NOW DAYS STANDARS, IT'S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THOSE THINGS SO PAST MISTAKES ARE NOT REPEATED!!!!!!! BUT CONSTANTLY DIGGING UP THE PAST TO GET WRILED UP ABOUT IT AND REMEMBERING THE PAST SO YOU CAN LEARN BETTER AND DO BETTER ARE TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT THINGS! SURE, LIKE I SAID I KNOW REPRESENTATION IS AWESOME AND WHILE IT'S ALWAYS EXISTED, POC HAVE ALWAYS EXISTED, LGBT PEOPLE HAVE ALWAYS EXISTED, ETC. ETC., THE REAL ISSUE HAS BEEN FINDING IT I GET IT BUT RE-MAKING MOVIES/BOOKS/ETC. IS ALMOST MORE OFFENSIVE THAN MAKING SOMETHING BRAND NEW THAT NOBODY HAS SEEN BEFORE
BECAUSE IT'S ONE THING TO BE A LINK IN A CHAIN IT'S ANOTHER THING TO START SOMETHING NEW
SO WHATEVER WATCH YOUR NEW LITTLE MERMAID RE-MAKE THE SAME MOVIES UNTIL THE END OF TIME WHATEVER IN THE END I DON'T CARE AND IT DOESN'T AFFECT ME BUT DAMN IT ACTING LIKE THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A POC MERMAID IS ABOUT AS STUPID AS IT GETS-

i read these books ages ago and LOVED them but what did get me is that there was all this buildup, like 4 books of it, and then I think the actual words were “Abbadon took a last few breaths and toppled over” or something like that. it just felt a bit flat. i mean i still LOVE this series just. ykwim

🪱 🐅 for the ask game! :3
🪱: what are some things that remind you of your kintype(s)
if you want an answer about the media I like (outside of the two main movies), the short story "Poor Unfortunate Fools" by Silvia Park has always been an amazing read for me. Really done a lot.
The Waterfire Saga by Jennifer Donnelley was also big to me when I was young. Things very specific to my kintype aren't the most common, so a lot of times I just make due with mermaid media ;]
And, like we talked about a bit ago, Luca! The Zora from Legend of Zelda, Undyne my BELOVED, and Abe Sapien. Those just come to mind first.
On a more abstract level? Fish markets, wetlands that you see on the side of your highway. Aquariums with murky water, muddy river banks. Smoked salmon is a big one, as is catfish in general. Most freshwater fish evoke strong emotions in me. Alligator and frog meat.
🐅: do you dress differently based on your kintype?
Kind of? I'm not one of those people with a nice woodsy aesthetic or anything. Doesn't make sense for me to have any tails or masks. Just doesn't mesh or have anything to do with my 'type. Although I do tend to wear muddy colors, as I've spoken about before. I own a lot of dark greens and browns!
No surprise that swamp critters like myself are drawn towards green and brown. That's the color I'd imagine my skin would need to be, and it's the color I feel most comfortable in! Right now I've got this dark yellow, nearly green-brown shirt on. I really like it. It's not a pretty color by any means, but it reminds me of mud and clay and I enjoy wearing it. I also have a dark green claw clip for my hair. It's not as effective as a green article of clothing, but it does act as a security blanket for me!
I don't know, it's strange! I always need some sort of brown or green on me or else I just don't feel like myself.
wahehe thank you for the ask!!!
