Nothing like hearing how my mom and grandma are at a university assisting college students who got tased by cops because they were protesting for Israel to stop committing genocide.
That was the first thing I heard when I got home-
What the hell happened to first amendment rights? Because all I see now is that the freedom of protest and the freedom of speech doesn't apply when people speak out against genocide.
I live in such a hypocritical country, good lord.

I woke up to the news about Refaat Alreer. I still feel cold. Imagine seeing someone talking on your TL every day, narrating what the genociders are doing, counting the dead and telling their stories, amplifying his colleagues in Palestinian activism and academia, advocating and pleading endlessly for a ceasefire, delivering blistering witticisms about Zionist propaganda and then...he and his whole family are dead.
Two of my favourite tweets by him, calling out the craven Western media for never naming Israel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It feels like a funeral today. My whole TL full of his students and Palestinians mourning Refaat alongside writers and journalists and academics from all over the Global South. The only people who matter to us is us.
Meanwhile, Zionists are attacking us under our mourning tweets, circulating the tweet where he laughed at the monstrous lie of Hamas cooking a baby in an oven during Oct 7th, one of the lies that fuelled the slaughter that eventually killed him too.
Tumblr media
This was his last tweet.
Tumblr media
USAmerican disability activist Imani Barbarin's tweet today was partially motivated by Refaat's death.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I need to go offline for a while.
I leave you with Refaat's last poem that was his pinned tweet for over a month. When a storyteller dies, generations are robbed of universes. When a poet dies, the world loses a piece of its soul.
Tumblr media
You can find Refaat's book "Gaza Writes Back" in my gdrive folder of Palestinian literature. I don't know where the royalties will go now, but please also try and find it in a bookstore or library.

Just watched a documentary mini-series on how Ukraine was regaining its independence in 1991.
The way the US tried so hard to preserve the USSR. That goddamned "Chicken Kiev" speech from George Bush.
And then that ultimatum that the US would only recognise Ukraine's independence if Ukraine gave up its nukes and a significant portion of other weapons, because for some reason they thought only russia had the right to have them.
Ukraine did agree to this ultimatum. It signed that goddamned Budapest memorandum. The US and UK said they, along with russia, would guarantee Ukraine's safety. And then in 2014 Ukraine, having gotten rid of most of its military potential, got invaded by russia. And the UK and US did NOTHING. Then in 2022 russia escalated its war to all out genocide. Entire cities are completely razed to the ground, tens of thousands of people are killed, millions lost their homes, thousands are subject to torture and forced deportations. Only then the US reluctantly started providing help, which is MUCH appreciated, I must stress on that, but Ukraine still has to keep begging. For its very existence. That was "guaranteed".
And in the midst of this, a lot of USAmericans are like, "why would we care about these millions of people (that we gave security guarantees to) that are being subject to genocide when the roads in my town are bad and the streets are filled with garbage? They must all die because there is garbage on my street!"

russians: *come to my homeland in tanks and with guns, murder, torture and rape my people, rob them of everything, wipe whole cities off the face of the earth, shoot missiles and drones whenever and wherever they want, cause unimaginable ecological damage, all while their countrymen back in russia are watching and cheering*
Me: I hate those despicable creatures and want them to die horrible deaths.
Some people thousands of kilometres away: YOU'RE DISGUSTING, UTTERLY EVIL, HOW DARE YOU! UKRAINIAN NAZI! By the way, russians are sweet innocent babies who are against the war, they're just so scared uwu, we love them.

It is interesting to watch the US reaction to the situation with Israel and Iran. That is, when russia launches 100+ missiles and an endless number of IRANIAN drones into Ukraine every night, no one cares. None of the “allies” even try to shoot down russian missiles and drones flying through their airspace, because why? Because these missiles will still return to Ukraine later to kill more Ukrainians so this doesn't concern us, russia can use our airspace for its crimes you're welcome!
But even when Ukraine defends itself without their fucking help, they dare to tell it what to do, thinking only about their own benefit and not about how many people will die because of this. How hypocritical all this pseudo-support looks.
You left Ukraine to die. That's what you did.

The most chilling realization I've had so far in 2024 is that if Hitler lived in our modern time having the exact political influence and goals he had during WW2...
...useful idiots would be praising him and calling him based, bending over backwards to justify his invasion of other countries, ethnic cleansing of people native to these counties, and the genocide of Jews.
"He is so smart! He used to be a painter, he must have such a unique view of the world"
"He loves animals to the point he is a vegetarian! Our president could learn something from him!"
"Aww look at him being sweet to his wife! He is so humble, why is he the bad guy again?"
"He is only looking out for fellow Germans, you know. Like normal leaders should: looking at you, America!"
"It's alright for him to invade Austria because [insert the "America bad" argument here]"
"There are no death camps! He said these were sanatoriums for Jewish people, and since our government lies sometimes, I will take his word for it!"
"Jews can't be oppressed. They are priviledged and rich, we shouldn't take them as refugees, it's their own fault for making a true politician go hard on their asses!"
"Have you listened to Taker Karlson's interview? Hitler gave him an entire lecture on history - I never fact-checked it because he was so convincing. And Biden can't even remember what he ate for breakfast! I wish our president was that cool..."
"Poland had it coming! They shouldn't have resisted if they didn't have enough weapons! I swear, at that point Poles are simply whiny because they want attention. Also, they're white conservatives, they can't have it that bad and if they do, they deserve it!"
"Ugh, Jews are so xenophobic and racist! I know they're getting killed or something, but hating all Germans indiscriminately is just so not fair! They really should touch some grass!"
"So many Poles are dying fighting...It's a tragedy. We should cease providing them with the military aid, they should accept the loss of Szczecin and start negotiating to save lives! They're literally forcing Hitler's hand at this point"

So when non-White people form resistance groups they're labeled as "terrorists".
But when white people do actual terrorism no one acknowledges it??? Like come on! The Proud Boys, the KKK, and Army Of God are clearly terrorist groups, you genocide lovers just turn a blind eye because they're white.
Fuckin' hypocrites.

Video description:
Preface reading: "Rafeef Ziadah, 12/11/11, London". The video begins showing a young woman on a stage, her hair cut in a sharp, short bob, wearing a gauzy black dress with red accents to match the stage wall behind her. She speaks into a mic in a blend of Canadian and Palestinian accents:
Transcript: "I'll start with this poem I wrote. This poem—when the bombs were dropping on Gaza I was the media spokesperson for the coalition, doing a lot of the organizing, and we'd stayed up to about six o'clock in the morning perfecting every soundbite and by the end of—you know most Palestinians get tired and start pronouncing our "P"s as "B"s so we could become "Balestinians" by the end of the day. So I was practicing my "P"s all night, and the next morning one of the journalists asked me, "Don't you think it would all be fine if you just stopped teaching your children to hate?"
I did not insult the person, I was very polite, but I wrote this poem as a response to these types of questions we Palestinians always get."
Today, my body was a TV’d massacre. Today, my body was a TV’d massacre that had to fit into sound-bites and word limits. Today, my body was a TV’d massacre that had to fit into sound-bites and word limits filled enough with statistics to counter measured response; and I perfected my English and I learned my UN resolutions—But still, he asked me, "Ms. Ziadah, don’t you think that everything would be resolved if you would just stop teaching so much hatred to your children? Pause. I look inside of me for strength to be patient but patience is not at the tip of my tongue as the bombs drop over Gaza. Patience has just escaped me. Pause. Smile. "We teach life, sir." Rafeef, remember to smile. Pause. "We teach life, sir. We Palestinians teach life after they have occupied the last sky. We teach life after they have built their settlements and apartheid walls, after the last skies. We teach life, sir." But today, my body was a TV’d massacre made to fit into sound-bites and word limits. And— "Just give us a story, a human story. You see, this is not political. We just want to tell people about you and your people so give us a human story. Don’t mention that word: “apartheid” and “occupation”— This is not political. You have to help me as a journalist to help you tell your story which is not a political story—" Today, my body was a TV’d massacre. "How about you give us a story of a woman in Gaza who needs medication?" "How about you? Do you have enough bone-broken limbs to cover the sun? Hand me over your dead and give me the list of their names in one thousand two hundred word limits." Today, my body was a TV’d massacre that had to fit into sound-bites and word limits and move those that are desensitized to terrorist blood. But they felt sorry. They felt sorry for the cattle over Gaza. So, I give them UN resolutions and statistics and we condemn and we deplore and we reject and— These are not two equal sides: occupier and occupied. And a hundred dead, two hundred dead, and a thousand dead. And between that, war crime and massacre, I vent out words and smile (not exotic), smile (not terrorist) And I recount, I recount a hundred dead, two hundred dead, a thousand dead. Is anyone out there? Will anyone listen? I wish I could wail over their bodies. I wish I could just run barefoot in every refugee camp and hold every child, cover their ears so they wouldn’t have to hear the sound of bombing for the rest of their life the way I do. Today, my body was a TV’d massacre And let me just tell you, there’s nothing your UN resolutions have ever done about this. And no sound-bite—no sound-bite I come up with, no matter how good my English gets—no sound-bite-no sound-bite-no sound-bite-no sound-bite, will bring them back to life, no sound-bite will fix this. We teach life, sir. We teach life, sir. We Palestinians wake up every morning to teach the rest of the world LIFE. Sir.
End transcription.
I think this twitter thread gives some necessary political context for the poem, so you can really understand the cruelty and barbarity of that question, and why Western media insistently shies away from "political" answers:

Cursory Google check corroborates all the info except for the number of peace settlements Israel's rejected. I can't find the exact number off the first page of Google and my head is throbbing too much to look deeper. I'm going to leave that for y'all to fact check.
(I went and looked Rafeef Ziadah up to check whether she's still alive (because that's what we do with Palestinians now) and she's safe in London, teaching Politics and Public Policy at King's College. You can find the rest of her poetry here.)

The problem is we can't even say we hate russians because we'll get lectured on fucking xenophobia and racism and when you are pointing out hey I actually live in conditions where I could die any single day, in excitingly violent ways you can't imagine, maybe I get the right to be angry and a lil bit irrational (altho I do believe you have to be a masochistic to like russians now) while my friend is sitting in the safety of the hall while her city is being shelled, you point this out, and they go Well still you can't hate them all, they don't support russia and anyway it is #NotAllRussians. And then you show the numerous screenshots what the not all russians write on social media, how gleeful they are etc etc. And you still get told same bullshit?? It genuinely makes me want to tear my hair out. We have to be perfect fucking little victims, quiet, polite, not too demanding, not hateful, nothing. We just gotta take it.
While russians don't get anything. Just unfair cancelling I guess.

So where are organizations like Greenpeace rn? The biggest ecological catastrophe in Europe since Chornobyl happened yesterday. Where are all those eco-activists? Why are they completely silent?
So far I have only seen this one (1) tweet retweeted by Greta Thunberg:
Tumblr media
Nothing else from any prominent activists or organizations.
This only shows one side of them: hypocrisy. They don't really care about the environment, about nature, about plants or animals or entire ecosystems that have been destroyed or are being destroyed in front of our very eyes in one of the largest single acts of ecocide. They only pretend to care to make themselves look good and when it's comfortable to them.
Here's a thread about all the world's biggest environment protection organizations' reactions:
Tumblr media
(Spoiler: there is zero reaction. Except for the German branch Greenpeace, who did make a post about it)
