What Big Teeth (Harry Szabo - my copy is not up to date)

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book! The ambiance and the mystery was on point

The reveals felt very satisfying

I've seen reviews mention that they hate the characters/don't get the lesson and uh yeah you're not supposed to be loving them. They're monsters. It says so from chapter one.

I just wanted to put them under a microscope to examine how each of them was fucked up in a different way lmao

The magic feels organic and unpredictable and I really liked that

What queer writing

Prompt: by an LGBTQ+ author Work: What Big Teeth Author: Rose Szabo About: Rose Szabo is a nonbinary writer, and this is their first novel. It follows Eleanor, an estranged child who has to go home to her supernatural family, some of who – some of whom! – are at times seem more wolf than person.

This was a very engaging read, with a unique tone. I like the book’s worldbuilding, however I think it’s a bit too head-heavy, there is a lot sprung on us in the last couple of chapters. The first half sets up a mystery that is, in hindsight, would have been impossible to predict; the setup is really, really good, and the payoff is good to, but it just couldn’t live up to it.

All in all, a good time, I did finish it very fast, because I just couldn’t put it down at times. Knowing that this was the author’s first book makes me want to read more from them, see how they will grow in the future.
