opinion on ffxv after 75 hours of playing (and one hour of running in circles to level gladio's skill up) (still haven't played any of the dlcs but i'm gonna take a break or something for a few days because i severely neglected my university stuff and spent most of the last week obsessively playing this game)
i love this game. am i tired? hell yeah. would i want all these hours back? hell no.
the game is a mystery to me.
the sidequests are genshin impact open world quests level (which means that if i hear anyone talking, i'm pressing the skip button because i don't give a fuck). you listen to someone yapping about unimportant stuff and they make you collect the same shit over and over again. peak game design.
the main quests are good but the ending made me age 10 years in a week. there's NO NEED for these tragedies. boy you literally have the power of gods on your side and they tell you the only way to get rid of the big bad villain is to kill yourself? sounds like bullshit to me. also why even bother if there's only a few thousands people left in the world. you already lost, all this stuff had to be done 10 years ago to have any meaning. and there's no way the world didn't just implode or something when the sun stopped rising. the true ending is noctis getting spat out of the crystal and realising everyone is long gone because there's no sunlight.
the mentally ill hobo could have been more cooperative too geez. i'll be honest i like him much more than the six. and everyone's like "oh gods are helping you" no they hate me and want me to die for no reason. i'd rather join forces with ardyn and try to take them down. even if he did a lot of questionable stuff (cough- killed my bride -cough-cough- and her brother -cough- also kidnapped my friend and tortured him-)
the hunts are kinda fun when it's a big monster but when it's a bunch of goblins i'm like,,, why did you call me here? ngl i thought all hunts would be like the first one, it was truly cool. there was some kind of plot, some interactions with my friends, some stealth, the monster seemed really tough (meanwhile me, fighting the lvl 99 adamantoise 65 hours later: the ring of lucii go brrr-)
the dungeons are ass. i thought nothing could be as disorienting as daggerfall's randomly generated dungeons but they really managed to do a miracle with ffxv. although the dungeons in ffxv are not scary at all, that's the difference.
the open world is okay. there're some interesting places (when you first see the big mysterious creature in the lake you're like do i have to fight it?? can i get closer to it?? what is this??) and the nature is beautiful. altissia looks majestic but sadly there's not much to do. i appreciate the hard work tho.
using regalia was a delight. when you want to take a break and just look at the landscape you can just sit still with a controller in your hands and enjoy the ride. really therapeutic. don't drive at night when you're low level though... listen to ignis. ignis is always right.
the camp life is by far the best out of all games i've had an experience with. there's so many little details everywhere that you cannot help but adore your companions. it's the way every time you make camp you get a bunch of photos prompto took since the last break. it's the way your companions talk to you almost all the time and you truly feel like you are on a road trip with your friends. it's the way gladio calls you out on your bullshit and afterwards you want to bite his head off each time you talk to him. it's the way ignis cooks for the entire party and makes you help him sometimes. i just love the way friendship is portrayed here.
what was not as good is luna and noct's relationship. there was not enough of luna. yes she loves noct but why? yes noct loves luna but why? luna literally appeared in the plot for two minutes and then tragically died. i think it's really bad. also imagine not seeing your bride for 12 years, when you finally meet her again she immediately dies, then you spend 10 years trapped in a crystal, fucking die and then get to marry your bride. honey it's been 22 years since i last talked to you in person. i'm NOT marrying a random woman in the afterlife (no hate for luna, just this love story didn't seem convincing enough). hopefully i'm gonna see what they wrote in the dawn of the future soon (please pray so that my amazon package doesn't get lost 🙏)
the music is incredible. the woman who wrote the soundtrack is my goddess and i am a devout worshipper 🙏🙏🙏
so, why is the game a mystery to me? because no other game could make me endure 75 hours of boring side quests. i managed to play hogwarts legacy for 44 hours and i despised that game when i finished it. i despised it long before i finished it. but not ffxv. they could make me do all this boring stuff again and i would do it (not for free tho because i've got better things to do with my time 🤣)
i enjoyed ffxv a lot. it also made me depressed for a week because ending a game like that should be a crime. i think i'm gonna do a few last quests after that but there's not much left (and i'm not looking for more because if i think i am done then i am done). not sure how long episodes gladiolus, prompto and ignis are gonna take, but they're also in my plans (no ardyn tho, gotta go watch some playthrough). there's also anime and a film so plenty of content for me. and i am waiting for the arrival of my book 🫡
(noticed that there's nothing about the combat. well it's because i don't care. i don't like combat. i don't like it in any game. i prefer to flee)

I honestly don't even need to dress up AS the characters to be happy. I just want their clothes 🤣🤣🤣 Ignis especially. I just want to feel that fancy 🤣🤣🤣🤣 but yeah I've seen all the crap people give cosplayers these days and it really irks me. Like. If you don't like it, move on? It's not like you HAVE to look at them? And 90% of the jerks couldn't even do it better anyway.
Omg yes please. And Ignis has to wrestle with the logic that Noct might still be alive somewhere despite all the facts. And Gladio has to work through his emotions better this time damn it! He needs and deserves the same amount of growth as everyone else!
Exactly! Like. The female mcs can be fun without being annoying. Soft without being weak willed. And cool without being emotionless. Like come on. If your males can be, so can your females! There's literally no reason it has to be treated differently.
I agree. That's why I said I don't think I'd count Noct as "broody". I've just seen a lot of people outside the Fandom call him emo and broody and stuff and I'm like. Nah. He had legit reasons for his pain. And he didn't wallow in it ALL the time. Just the second half. BECAUSE AFTER ALTISSIA HE DIDN'T CATCH A DAMN BREAK TO BE ABLE TO COME BACK FROM EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED.
It sounds horrible but I love blind!Ignis and Nocts growth to much to not play to the end each time. Not like I'm happy that Iggy is blind but the way it affects the story and the way he takes it in strides really impresses me from a narrative POV. It hurts. But it's beautiful in a way, if that makes sense. I'm on my 3rd new game+ in like.. A little over a month I think? And I'm gonna go to the very end again 🤣 even if the alt ending is the only true end to me lolol
I kinda want many fictional characters’ clothes, but I fear it’s gone be like… how something looks good on a mannequin and then I buy it and it looks like garbage on me 😭 Because I mean let’s face it, they have the power of anime on their side 😂 Some of these outfits stay plastered to the right spots on their body at all times, some defy physics in ways we don’t realize until it turns out you need body tape to keep some shit looking good… stuff like that.
I think that’s why I like FFX-2; it was an entirely woman-led FF and it was just a group of chicks kicking ass with full personalities. And while Yuna was focused on reuniting with Tidus, that wasn’t her whole thing. Idk why Squenix can no longer do that 😂
Noct in the OG concept was broody and emo, and tbh I am so glad they didn’t go with that. Yeah, it would have been in line with what folks apparently wanted, but I’m over the stoic protagonist trope. Seeing the boys hang out and just be a bunch of dudes on a road trip was a great choice, imo! And no offense to Lunafreya, I’m so glad that the romance was an afterthought in the game, cause tbh square doesn’t really do romances well enough to shoehorn it in almost every damn game.
You are stronger than me cause I can’t take the pain and the disharmony the group had after Altissia 🥲 I know it gets better but I was in PAIN going through all that! I could only play through the whole game once, and the DLC once. I still haven’t played Ardyn’s DLC and I highly doubt I’ll go back to do it at this point either, it’s been years 😂 But the good thing about being on tumblr when it dropped is that I pretty much got the gist of it all through gifs and screenshots and discourse so I don’t feel I missed out in the end.

Opinions
First impression • Pretty solid. It’s clear from the first scene (not counting the talk between Noct and Regis) that Gladio is the Gets Shit Done guy in the group. He’s playful, but forceful when the need arises. His introduction is solid, and tells us right off the bat who we’re going to be fighting alongside for the next.....well, if you’re me, the better part of a thousand hours and counting. Anyway, I thought he was great and I was pretty excited to see what he was gonna do. And, for the record, for all the complaining about to do, I still think he’s great. I just think this is a terrible game sometimes, which is why I made it my life obviously.
Impression now • My issue with Gladio is this, and I have said it before: much like Lunafreya, he is implied to have a rich inner world, and a stronger connection to the people in his everyday life outside the main group than anyone else. But he is so filtered through the lense of his relationship to the protagonist - which itself suffers from this failure to contextualise him properly - and he is given so little to do that it obfuscates his motivations, makes him harder to relate to, and ultimately makes for a worse character. Not in terms of likeability, but in terms of narrative utility and agency. Whereas Ignis and Prompto’s worlds seem to revolve largely around Noctis (though that’s not to say they don’t have pasts of their own), Gladio has an explicit romantic history, is known for making friends easy, and has trained alongside soldiers who are all very close with one another. And when Insomnia fell, he, too, lost a father who he looked up to. For a terrifying moment, he didn’t know if his baby sister was alive or not. He had friends, possibly former lovers, who died in that mess. People he worked not only in tandem with, but directly, every day since he was a kid. People he loved. A home. And that’s just...never addressed? Ever? Not once? This failure on the Gladio front extends to the rest of his family, also, but I already whined about that. It’s truly disappointing, because of everyone, he had the broadest capacity to relate to Noctis’ grief, and really communicate it further to the audience. Again, not to drive the point too hard, but unlike the others: he had a family we’re acquainted with. There’s a lot to be said for the way he throws himself further into his role instead of getting angry the way Noct did, or falling apart the way Prompto did. A lot of effects this could have had on him. Becoming more protective, or harder on the others in battle for fear they’ll be hurt too. Panic over not being able to reach Iris. Even his DLC was a let-down in that, we’re told a bunch of stuff, but none of it adds context or nuance or gives us a real peek into his inner world the way the others did for their respective characters. I want him and Noctis to bond over the unthinkable amount of grief they’ve endured, and come to a stronger understanding of one another. That should have been the obvious course of action: Gladio and Noct as the foil to one another, as much as they are a mirror. Gladiolus was done dirty, and I could give examples all day. And it’s a shame, because he’s such a sweet, well-meaning guy, always doing what he feels is best for others, rarely doing anything for himself. Loyal to the end, just like his Dad. I want more for him, but instead I’m left with this negative space around his character, and a whole lot of frustration. And yes, I am constantly sick to my stomach with rage over it, thanks for asking.
Favorite moment • It’s hard to say. Probably the part where he pulls Noct up at the Disc. It’s one of the few times he’s really given a space to occupy, and we’re able to glimpse his true motivations. But again: it’s just a glimpse.
Idea for a story • His dlc but it didn’t suck. I’m just kidding mostly, I’d really like to see him interact with his own world more. With Iris and Clarus and the other Glaives. And Luna, out of spite. I still have her Insomnia verse, where’s big bro Gladio?
Unpopular opinion • It was fine that Gladio yelled at Noct, actually. The scene was fine. It was all fine. To me, it’s more of a failure to appropriately contextualise Gladio that makes this scene feel uncomfortable in all the wrong ways. In the end, he comes off like a total dick to his friend who just lost the love of his life for no goddamn reason. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Each character has a role in the group: Noctis may be the person around which they revolve, but Prompto is the true emotional core. Ignis is the caretaker. And as I said, Gladio is the Gets Shit Done guy. While Prompto is there to encourage and Ignis is there to facilitate Noctis, Gladio is there to give him that push when he needs it, just like at the Disc. Noctis needs room to be human (or else he’d be a shit POV character), but someone has to kick his ass every so often or the plot would never happen. Ignis and Prompto are right to treat Noctis with care and respect while he’s mourning; Gladio is equally right that he doesn’t have the luxury to stay in mourning for long. Not with the fate of the world in the balance. For that and everything I ranted about before, it’s fine that he got mad. I just wish it was done better, for his sake.
Favorite relationship • I honestly found his partnership with Ignis so, so endearing. They have this mutual understanding, not just of their duties but of one another. A real Mom and Dad dynamic that’s hard not to love. That said, as frustrating as his portrayal could be, there isn’t a dynamic he shares with the bros I don’t love. His borderline competitive, very older/younger brotherly relationship with Noct, and the clear affection he has for Prompto too. To be clear once again, I think he’s a great character. I just wish the writers knew it too.
Favorite headcanon • I remember seeing something about him being a dog person, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it. Someone get this man a puppy.

so i finally finished ffxv
what the FUCK
i already new what was gonna happen but holy shit its still so emotional jfc, the last battle w ardyn was INCREDIBLE like what the hell- and speaking of ardyn, what a poor guy, i mean he got peace finally but, jeez, at what cost
also who gave square enix the right to remind of the Stand By Me scene from all the way in the beginning just,,, ow, that hurts,, on a side note, florence m the machine was perfect and i love that song so much and i want to listen to it but its gonna be a while before i can without crying its da2 all over again but heck if i aint gonna get that ost damn
ngl though, wasnt impressed w that weird het marriage scene, its def underwhelming after the scene w the bois when noc talks about ‘this being it’ or wtvr esp since that made me cry real tears and sob into my sweater like a child again cough its just didnt feel at all important in comparison and kinda shoehorned in, then again what do i know

i tried playing the game what was it, two years ago?? but my computer didn’t have the good specs for it and it couldn’t run properly, the moment the magitek became a reccuring enemies my computer couldn’t follow anymore (couldn’t process it when they spawned dKJLFDF) so i had to drop playing it, and when i finally got a new computer i wasn’t in the mood for it anymore.

YOU WILL REGRET ASKING THIS, I THINK. This became more of a rank-your-fave-ships thing than a true pair thing, lol. I tend to be character-centric about my fandoms.
NOTP:
Likely just reader inserts ‘cause I don’t really read those, but also probably Iris & Ignis (see next entry).
BROTP:
Iris & Ignis leads the pack, but honestly love it when fics feature Ignis having meaningful and supportive female friendships. Some pre-roadtrip fics feature Crowe being a supportive older sister type for him, and I really dig that. One of my favorite fics in the fandom is Aranea giving Ignis his WoR lesbian biker haircut, and it is *chef’s kiss*.
OTP:
I CAN’T CHOOSE AMONG 3. It’s a tie among Gladio/Ignis, Ardyn/Ignis, and Ravus/Ignis for me. I love the differences in dynamics these three ships bring, they’re just so far apart from each other and it’s very interesting to me.
I will say that fresh out of the game, I was heavily into Gladio/Ignis, it just widened over time as I thought about other characters more and read more fics. Gladio was already so soft and mindful around Ignis pre-Altissia, but him post-Altissia hit me HARD. I keep going back to that, how heartbreakingly solicitous he was, and how lost he looked after he brought Ignis back from the altar, and on and on. Augh.
Ardyn/Ignis is a rareship that’s captured my attention like a bullet train that went off the rails (and really rare—fewer AO3 works under it than Fleurentia, which is already pretty rare [but still more than Nyx/Ignis] ). Ardyn’s my second favorite character in the game (it doesn’t show in my fanwork, I need to fix that at one point)—he just breaks my heart, and if I wasn’t so busy stanning Ignis, I’d be stanning this dude hard. While Ardyn/Ignis sates my need for dark fics in general, there’s quite a bit of variation and creativity in the existing fanwork for it that I wouldn’t automatically categorize it as such (my favorite comedy fic is from this ship, even). I also love how the flavor changes depending on whether the author seems to go for Ardyn “resisting” or “submitting” to his fate. It just gives me a lot to think about, and there’s quite a lot of room for play. Reading Ardnis fics that seem to have been written pre-Ardyn DLC (or ignoring it) has also been interesting.
Fleurentia brings all the fucking regency romance tropes and baggage and I ADORE it. I heavily HC Ravus as ND, and the circumstances surrounding him and his family just lend to so much heartbreak and drama. I normally couldn’t care less about canon compliance, which works really well when thinking about this ship. Ravus also reminds me quite a bit of the Darcy-archetype, which I have a bit of a weak spot for.
Second choice pairing:
IT’S ANOTHER TIE, AREN’T YOU TIRED BY NOW. Nyx/Ignis, Cor/Ignis. Two ships that I never thought I’d ever be into, but a number of very lovely fics changed my mind.
Nyx/Ignis is like the opposite of Fleurentia for me, with all the anti-monarchy working-class baggage it comes with, which honestly echoes more of my shriveled heart than any of the other mentioned ships here. The amount of political projection I lend to this ship, lol. TOO MUCH.
Cor/Ignis I blame entirely on very specific authors. I honestly didn’t look twice at Cor throughout the game, but reading fics on this ship has changed my mind about Cor so much. (AND NOW WE HAVE COTTAGECOR, HOW AWESOME IS THAT).
I’m gonna put Noctis/Ignis and Prompto/Ignis here too, because while they’re not my preferred ships, I do read them on occasion. I just tend to be particular about what sort of dynamic they have.
Fluffy pairing:
Prompto/Ignis, hands-down. Fluffiest of fluffs. If I ever need a fluffy pick-me-up, I look up fics for these two from certain authors, they’re diabetes all over.
Gladio/Ignis is a close runner-up, because these two just slotting into each other’s lives so well makes me emotional. Gladio providing the open appreciation Ignis rarely gets in his normal life just slays me.
Angsty pairing:
Ardyn/Ignis, for obvious reasons. Some Gladnis angst also hits the spot for me, especially during WoR.
Favorite poly ship:
OT4′s an obvious answer, but again, tends to not be my favorite ship in general though I do like some of its fics. Cor/Ignis/Gladio post-WoR is something I like to think of from time to time as well.
Weirdest pairing:
I can’t think of one, except maybe Ignis having a bit of an older-man-crush-thing which feels very on brand to me, for some reason.

I hope you dont find this ask annoying but I've seen all the things you've been saying about time being rewritten for ffxv. I understand it but I feel that I'm not getting the whole picture. Could you go further in detail about it or tell me everything I need to read/watch to get the full picture/lore? I've watched the movie and brotherhood eps and I've watched all the episodes for the boys/ardyn. Is carbuncle the little fox thing we meet at the very beginning of the game?
I don't even have the whole picture and I looked up pretty much everything I could about this game because all the references are so well hidden.
It's kind of hard to sum up when I haven't played 15 for 2 years. I pick up comrades every now and then because I'm still missing some stuff on it, but I hate constant battle grinding for plot crumbs, so I drop it after a couple of levels.
Basically though, the versus core idea of alternate timelines is still woven into the game, because 15 was gonna be part of 13's compilation.
The omen trailer, opening and looped ending are the hints to this. Carbuncle is a piece of the crystal that Regis used to create a stitch in time to save Noctis. They're on an endless loop until they get the best ending.
The alt ending in Ignis dlc is a better ending, but not the best since Luna still dies, which is why it's not canon, but it's a possibility after the main storyline, which is why Iggy's dlc is last of the chocobros. It's saying that's the next path after the current one.
Carbuncle is in the demo with lil Noctis, which isn't available anymore. It's a whole trippy dream thing about slaying demons and making the right choices. You can see Carbuncle in the main game if Prompto snaps a photo of him. He also occasionally shows up to bring Noctis back from KO. Because that'd be a bad ending if he dies lol
There was a really good take about Ardyn's motivation on reddit through the pitioss theory, although it's not totally accurate. Ardyn's dlc says his side of things, while Iggy's has pretty much all the rest of the game exposition. Ravus notes beside his body in Nifelheim tell his part. The only thing missing was Luna's dlc, which got cancelled.
There's other stuff hinted at with locations like the forest dungeons and the volcano and everything, but it's pretty spread out among the fandom. You could try thelifestream.net and see what they've got on 15. They do facts well 😁

Me, nyooming in with some Episode Ardyn theories?? *Gladio voice* You better believe it!
Ok, for some reason, I feel like there’s going to be a chance for an alternate ending, I don’t know why, but it feels very likely.
Namely with that one part that has Somnus egging you on to kill Aera, if that plays out like a multiple choice, I feel as if one of three things could happen.
Tabata said he wanted to do an “extra bad” ending if the fans wanted it during a conference, so what if by killing Aera, it initiates Ardyn’s complete turn, and he’s just out for bloodshed, not a complicated plot for revenge, just murder and death. Which would end up in some sort of slaughtering rampage which probably won’t be shown for T rated purposes, but something tells me that it would be cataclysmic.
I feel as if the default option is fight Somnus, no matter what you’re gonna have to square down with that little shit, and in that case, all I can say is “come at me.”
Another one, perhaps to get to the best ending, would be for Ardyn to extend hand to Somnus, make one last attempt after Aera pleads with him. Ask his brother to cease with the torment, let it end. There probably would be a fight much like Episode Ignis had, but if this was Somnus’ redemption and perhaps have him apologizing in the end? Then in the real world, he would confess the sins he had done, showing people Ardyn’s true inheritance? Perhaps the actual reason the darkness fell upon the world was because of Somnus’ doing. And in the confession he makes, the light of the crystal purges the darkness from the land and Ardyn?
Because I've been thinking about Aera’s words, begging Ardyn to live, and I wonder if that means that there will be a good ending, such as the dawn of the future art we first saw. With Uncle Ardyn and his EXTREMELY GREAT Grandniece and nephew. Could it be possible that we may have an in game happy ending for everyone? As one last send off, we get to see all the characters we love alive and well? Not just in a novel form?
I don’t know, this is just speculation and what not, but I'm kind of hoping they take the route Episode Ignis took! Either way, I definitely won’t be disappointed with this dlc!

10. Oof. Do I have one? ... Yes I do. My very first time through the game, I thought he was an obnoxious coward who was most definitely not qualified to even be part of the party.

12. OHHH BOOOY! I have a whole DRAFT on my Kingdom Hearts/Final Fantasy blog detailing how I would change the game. Let me go copy-and-paste that stuff! Including but not limited to: Get rid of the patch-job---By that I mean: All the DLC adventures should be playable aspects of the game. As well as Brotherhood and, yes, even Kingsglaive. ALL should be included in the base game from the start. What can I say, extra homework to understand the universe and whatever is too much effort for most people (not me but if I hadn’t known about Brotherhood and Kingsglaive I would have been so confused). ALSO, Better Ardyn backstory (personal opinion: there wasn’t enough but he seemed so intriguing as a concept). And last but most CERTAINLY not least: stOP underutilizing the female characters. Luna seems like a boss but she barely gets any screen time and I’m probs gonna die mad about it. Aranea too. AS WELL, give the characters proper arcs. Like, it felt like Ignis was the only one with a complete character arc, what with going blind and stuff.
13. Instead of ***Spoilers for a nearly 3-year-old game*** Luna having barely any screentime and dying, I would have had her be part of the party and show off how epic she is.

AU where FF15 is good but FF7 is really bad
15 was so so close to being good and understanding what made VII/IX/whatever work. Like, they looked at it and went, “roadtrip friendships. Got it.” And then just threw in exactly that without actually writing any of the stuff that would normally go with a friendship or a road trip.
Like, have you ever read a fic where five chapters in, a couple just kinda turns up? And not even one of the well-established couples, either – some off the wall shit where the characters don’t even know the other exists in canon. And the author just dumps this on you out of the blue, and then proceeds to act as though of course this pairing makes sense, and thus doesn’t explain a goddamn thing about what’s going on as they continue to exchange sweet nothings and pecks on the cheek as though nothing is out of the ordinary. You, not giving a rat’s ass about ships in general and having clicked on the fic in the first place for its premise, try not to let it concern you too much, but as the ship starts eating up more and more screentime, you start getting a little frustrated that you’re not being given anything to justify it. And I don’t mean justify as in “BUT IN EPISODE 30 IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT BUTTERCAT/SENTIENT COFFEE FILTER WAS CANON, EVERYONE KNOWS HE VIEWS CRABCAKE-KUN AS A SIBLING FIGURE” nonsense, I mean justify as in, since this relationship’s kind of whipped up wholecloth, how did these people meet? What drew them to one another? How did they realise they loved one another? (And no, “her smile lit up the whole room and they knew she was the one” does not fucking count.) The whole point of shipping with something like this is to explore all these what-if questions and actually getting to directly create this dynamic themselves. Why would you make the ship and then not do that? What are you even doing at this point? Just slapping two people together for the aesthetic? That could have been interesting, why are you avoiding what seems to be your own premise? Maybe I wanted to see what led up to all this, XxX_stephanie_ff_luvver38_XxX! Maybe I wanted the dirt on Buttercat/Empty Gum Wrapper-san and its development within the context of the story! Did you ever think of that? Huh?
Final Fantasy XV is like this, but for an entire game.
They go to the trouble of writing these four guys implied to have a lot of history with each other that led to them being as close as they are, but that’s just it – it’s only ever implied. It’s so much easier to just imply than it is to go through the trouble of having your protagonists meet, and grow fond of one another, and take the audience through an emotional arc with them as we see them change and grow with each other for the better, AKA all the good parts of seeing a cool friendship roadtrip. And it’s worse than it would be if it were just a fanfic, because if you have a well-established enough relationship, whether it was romantic or not, then at the very least there you can get away with not fleshing anything out, because whatever it’s Cloud and Zack, we know who they are and why they like each other, let’s fast-forward to the part where they’re making out. XV is an original property and everything that the audience is going to know about it is going to be in the game. You can’t fast-forward to the good part because there’s nothing to fast-forward from but a shitty-writing-because-this-game-was-in-development-for-over-a-decade-and-it-shows-shaped void. They sell their game on Friendship Roadtrip Back To The Basics, and then just skipped to the end result because they didn’t want to have to actually resolve any arcs that they started, because they couldn’t start any arcs, because aaaaa shit this game ships tomorrow and it’s already November and we’re two months overdue just push it out we’ll put the backstories in DLC they’ll never notice shhhhhh – and more importantly, because they’ve learned they don’t actually need to, because the fans are happy with basically whatever and have collectively switched off their quality relationship filters since they’re just gonna write fic filling in the blanks anyway. Just look at Crisis Core, or literally any Kingdom Hearts game after Chain of Memories. It has all the grand gestures and emotional beats of something important happening, with no actual payoff. Prompto’s “surprise I’m a clone now let’s never speak of this again” is the most egregious example of this, with Luna’s “romance” and Ignis going blind offscreen and being whatever about it being close contenders as well. All “ clever speshul plot bombshells”, no actual significance towards the characters themselves or even the narrative in general. And don’t even get me started on the female characters, you assholes had this figured out all the way back in FFV, this isn’t hard.
So basically what I’m saying is that Final Fanatsy XV was written by Steven Moffat OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

i’m stopping for today bc i have to wake up early tomorrow and if i start Episode Ignis now my night will be ruined
so i went through episode Gladio and episode Prompto for now.
Episode Gladio was kind of interesting, i liked that we did get to know more about Cor, and the bigger mythos around the special powers that comes with being the Shield of the King, more than just being a glorified bodyguard yaknow? It was pretty neat in general, filling the gap explaining where Gladio has gone. Plus it does explain why he’s more on the edge when everything goes down after Altissia, after this amount of burden and reminder of how important Noctis is going to be, i can understand why he snapped like he did.
That said i’m not a fan of fighting with greatswords to start with so having to do a whole episode as Gladio was... a lot... my fighting style with ff15 has been “wrapping wrapping wrapping, sword wrapping wrapping” so huh, i wasn’t prepared to that.
... the only thing that could have been worse would have been to force me to use Guns the whole time through. So, thanks Episode Prompto for making me dread playing.
The gun gameplay with Prompto was pretty smart and dynamic, honestly it looked very cool and it would have been more fun to me if i was just, better with guns to start with, but there’s a reason i’ve never ever used gun as Noctis during my 97 hours of gameplay.
but Episode Prompto’s plot was fucking outstanding and i loved it. I loved how much Aranea was in it too and her way to deal with the situation. She is so clever and neat and i love how direct she can be. Also she’s so pretty....
meanwhile on Prompto’s side, it was nice to see why he felt the need to reveal his origins to Noctis and the gang, and seeing him discover more about the clone thing, it was so unsettling and really sinking in how awful the whole thing was. It also made it a lot clearer which is pretty neat since in the main game it’s kinda just, thrown by lines of dialogues from Ardyn yaknow? It’s really neat to have a scavanger hunt of scientific recording to try to piece things together and make it all clear, especially from the point of view of the one person who would have an identity crisis out of it.
Anyway anything about Prompto’s dilemna of fearing not being accepted by others if they knew his origins made me cry, especially when that translated to him hallucinating Noctis attacking him like hellloooo im gonna cry.
In general though man i do try to keep my shippy commentary lowkey but... Prompto and Noctis fills me with love i will never know happiness ever again. The full scene where Noctis apologizes to Prompto and expresses that he wants to unite their nations, showing Prompto that what he wants is to have him by his sides regardless of his origins and that he’ll always adjust for Prompto? im a fucking mess.
Especially knowing it was a few hours before Noctis entered the Crystal and learnt his destiny was to die for the greater good.... Like.. this scene shows how much Noctis had hopes and plans for the future and especially regarding Prompto and i’m just.......... i’ll never know happiness ever again.
anyway i’ll do Ignis and Ardyn’s DLCs in time, depends how much i survive the exams tomorrow lmao. Then i’ll be done.... man. What a trip that has been...

Sword of the Father briefly increases its wielder's strength after finishers. Attacking with it performs basic sword slashes, one of them leaving a hologram that damages enemies that come into contact with it like with the Trident of the Oracle. The last attack is a slow, but powerful and gives +200 Strength for 5 seconds. The finisher can be used to put enemies in Vulnerable state and then attack them with the boosted Strength. It is possible to skip to the finisher (works with any weapon) by starting a combo, pausing, and during the flourish where Noctis returns the weapon press attack again. With the Sword of the Father, the player won't skip right into the finisher, but into the thrust right before it.

IT SURE WOULD BE FUCKING NICE IF THE GODDAMN GAME TOLD ME ABOUT THIS
XV has such shit ability to actually tell you anything about how the mechanics work. I was 95 hours in before I learned that the weapons you have equipped on Noctis affect your overall combined stats via each weapon equipped. I learned this via playing the Comrades DLC. Not the base game. Ignis’ playstyle is ridiculously complex for no reason, but leads to a lot of fun and utility depending on what you do. Other various mechanics are “explained” with a short quip and nothing to do with how it actually works.
Weapon combos are a big one actually -- in theory you can swap weapons mid combo and create devastating chains with certain weapons being better suited for creating the “vulnerable” state if you chain them correctly. However, due to none of this being explained, it’s likely that you’ll just go with the weapon with the highest attack stat and hold down the O button mindlessly. Because that’s how combat works in this game, you just hold down the button.

It actually hearkens back to OG XII for me, where the license board was completely unrestricted from the get go. In theory this meant you could create any weird class you wanted, but in practice it just meant that a good 80% of players just went for the strongest weapons/spells they could without a thought to customization. Eventually this was rectified in The Zodiac Age version that gave 12 unique classes, to great acclaim. Limitations in game design are good, it fosters creativity on the part of the player as they start to figure out what works better with this or that.
It’s astounding how XV’s gameplay is kind of at the Worst inside the base game. All the DLCs and the Comrades expansions make the gameplay much more engaging and fun, with a higher focus on potential skill. I’m honestly not quite sure how Comrades fits into that because it was developed roughly the same time as the base game itself, and yet it manages to feel like a vast improvement, either because of crafting or the couple of changes they made to mechanics.
Don’t get me wrong, I actually rather like playing XV. The warping mechanic alone is enough to give me the good good serotonin and keeps me interested in where a lot of the fights and encounters are going. It’s just that all the “side content” for the game plays so much better (Gladio’s precise block my beloved), and the lack of explaining actual mechanics hampers the overall experience.
That being said, guess who’s gonna go take on all the post game dungeonssssssss.....

My Beef With Episode Ignis
GIANT DISCLAIMER: I love Ignis. I think he deserved better. I love him and his sass and class. But boy, do I have a problem with Episode Ignis!
Okay, so Episode Ignis gave me feels. Good feels, bad feels (Yes, I got the ending where you die and boy did I have to go lie down in the foetal position to process that) and...WTF feels. I didn’t cry as much as I expected to, which is good because Episode Prompto left me a sobbing emotional mess with that GODDAMN FLASHBACK SCENE AND THE INTERNAL FIGHT AGAINST NOCTIS!!! I’m not bitter, Square.
BUT!!! Let’s get into the meat of why I have a problem. This whole thing felt like a giant case of “We need to make people happy.” The canon ending is great. Yeah, it hurts and it made me cry because the canon ending always makes me cry but it fits. There’s no plotholes (Well, no major ones), it’s poignant, tragic and a whole lot of other painful tear-jerker fancy words you find on the back of romantic tragedy paperback novels.
Why do I have a problem? THAT NON-CANON ENDING IS A GIANT MOUNTAIN OF BULLSHIT!!! WHY?! Because way to throw out a whole game, two DLCs and a whole anime’s worth of character development and lore out the window in favour of making Ignis the perfect character. Don’t agree? Let’s look at the different things I’m referring to.
1) FIRST OF ALL! The Brotherhood anime. It clearly shows that every single bro was a part of Noct’s life from a very early stage. Gladiolus, as his trainer, has been with him from a very early age and very early on, showed a clear and deep camaraderie with Noctis after they got their issues out of the way. Prompto, while only plucking up the guts to talk to Noctis later, has always cared about the prince and Noctis was aware of it even if they never did anything until high school. And going from this, it looks as if proper camaraderie and understanding between Ignis and Noctis wasn’t properly achieved until Noctis was in his teens. Remember that massive argument that had Ignis face-palming the steering wheel? Yeah, that one. Not so easy a relationship and it took Gladio pointing out why Noctis was being difficult for Ignis to GET WHY THE PRINCE WAS BEING SO PISSY!!! So why would you make it out as if Ignis cared the most about Noctis when it’s clear that all the bros have a very powerful bond with him and each other?!
2) SECOND! Episode Prompto. That non-canon ending completely negates his entire DLC! If Ignis goes straight to Zegnautus Keep after Altissia, that means no train trip happened, no Ardyn screwing with Noctis, no Prompto getting thrown off the train and NO FRIGGIN EPISODE PROMPTO!!! You just completely threw out a whole episode of plot and character development.
3) THIRD! Episode Gladio. Okay, I’m a serious Gladio lover but this is a legitimate gripe here. Wouldn’t it have made more sense and been a lot more tragic if, as the King’s Sworn Shield, Gladio had had the vision of Noctis giving up his life to vanquish Ardyn? The King’s Sworn Shield unable to fulfil his duty and protect the king because you can’t change fate? Imagine Gladio, already dealing with the fact that his father died protecting Regis, knowing that one day he’ll have to let Noctis go to his death in order for the light to come back? AND WHAT WAS THE POINT IN HIM TRYING TO BECOME STRONGER IF IGGY’S JUST GONNA WALTZ INTO ZEGNAUTUS KEEP AND STEAL THE SHOW?! That’s another DLC worth of character development completely thrown under the bus!
4) FOURTH!!! THE LORE AROUND THE FRIGGIN RING OF THE LUCII, DAMNIT!!! So here’s my biggest beef. The whole thing about using the Ring Of The Lucii is that it requires a sacrifice to be used IF (And this is a big IF), the former kings deem you worthy of using their power. HI, HELLO, IT BURNED THE SHIT OUT OF RAVUS’ ARM FOR JUST A FEW SECONDS WORTH OF WEAR AND NYX HAD TO OFFER UP HIS LIFE TO USE IT!!! So, hello, how the frig did Ignis get through that without either A) Dying or B) Staying blind. Because that Non-Canon ending sure as shit showed that he wasn’t blind anymore. Only the Lucis Bloodline can use the ring without dying right off the bat and even then it drains you slow like a parasite. So what? Ignis gets off scott-free and we just disregard the fact that Nyx gave up his life and Ravus lost an arm and HELLO, IT ACTUALLY OUTRIGHT KILLED A TRAITOR WHEN HE TOOK IT OFF LUNA?!?!?! ARE WE SUPPOSED TO JUST THROW ALL OF THAT DOWN THE GARBAGE DISPOSAL?!?!?! Yeah, that’s not how this works.
Summing up because I think my caps-lock key is having issues (are you surprised), Episode Ignis , or more specifically the non-canon ending, is just a whole mountain worth of bullshit that throws out so much character development and story and just creates a plot-hole so deep you could fall all the way to China if you jumped inside. As much as the Canon ending hurts me, I still love it. It hurts but it’s fitting and that non-canon ending is just a steaming pile of OH, HELL NO!
